[Bug 1774150] Re: 3.13.0-149-generic: suspend/resume issue on 14.04

2018-06-06 Thread Gerd Bavendiek via ubuntu-bugs
This affects me too. No laptop here, but a Shuttle FS437. Used to work
rock solid all the time.

I ran apport-collect 1774150 succesfully.

Does strace show the same ?

As I got no help, not even the slightest response, I switched to TB 11.
No longer with several accounts. I'm switching using profiles. This

 Any help is appreciated !

[Bug 919965] [NEW] Adding annotation: No input possible until some focus change

2012-01-22 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
Public bug reported:

Adding a new annotion in evince (Oneiric) no input is possible until one
switches focus from the input window to the document window and back
again.

Initially the cursor of the annotation input box is blinking, but no
input is possible.

This happens in Oneiric using either xfec4 or Unity with every pdf I
tried. Other users made the very same experience.

This is really annoying ...

[Bug 912710] [NEW] Oneiric Thunderbird freezes on receiving mail

2012-01-06 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
Public bug reported:

After having switched to Oneiric a couple of days ago, Thunderbird
freezes on receiving mail most (all ?) of the time.

Running in safe-mode this is very easy to reproduce for me:

Having an IMAP mailbox active, I ask someone to drop me a mail to that
mailbox.

I see the new mail in that mailbox summary, but Thunderbird is frozen
completely. The only action I can take is to close (i.e. kill) it via
the window manager.

This is strace output:

lulu:/home/ba ps -ef | grep thund
ba1388 2156 1 11:29 pts/200:00:04
/usr/lib/thunderbird-8.0/thunderbird-bin -safe-mode
ba1516 2155 0 11:34 pts/100:00:00 grep thund
lulu:/home/ba sudo strace -p 1388
Process 1388 attached - interrupt to quit
write(59,
\17\0)\0?\0S\0c\0q\0\201\0\217\0\233\0\242\0\246\0\243\0\235\0\226\0\214\0\201\0...,
 16560^C unfinished ...
Process 1388 detached
lulu:/home/ba

So obviously Thunderbird is hanging in a write to fd 59.

lsof tells me:

thunderbi 1388 ba 59u unix 0xf26e9680 0t0 8554035 socket
thunderbi 1388 ba 60u IPv48528771 0t0 TCP
lulu:57892-abgze76e.fsc.net:imaps (ESTABLISHED)

This happens with different IMAP mailboxes (Google being one of them).
With Thunderbird in Natty (very same tb-configuration) I never had such
an issue.

I really would like to help debugging, if anybody gives me instructions.
But I REALLY need advise how to use another Thunderbird version (from
the ubuntu repos if possible).

Thanks

Gerd

When do you think will this be available ?

Does it make sense for me to build it on my own, just to be able to
swicth to Oneiric ?

Are the changes available somewhere ?

Re: [Bug 459052] Re: some sierra modem tty's get killed by CFUN=1

2011-12-06 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
Hi Mathieu,

thanks for responding.

Am 06.12.2011 16:25, schrieb Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre:
Could you please confirm you indeed have modemmanager 0.5-0ubuntu1?
lulu:/home/ba dpkg -l | grep modem
ii modemmanager
0.5-1ubuntu1 D-Bus service for managing modems

Also, it might be good to look into whether your device needs a firmware
update, or whether it really is supported by the changes implemented.
There are so many devices, they're all different.

This is a dual boot laptop. In Natty (with patched modemmanager)
everything is well. In Oneiric CFUN=1 is being sent, WHICH MUST NOT
HAPPEN with the type of Sierra I've got.

This was the point in Aleksander's patch.

Having the full debug log from the point where that modem was connected
will also help, since there may be some extra information about why
 CFUN=1 doesn't work.

mm.log is attached.

Thanks

Gerd

Re: [Bug 459052] Re: some sierra modem tty's get killed by CFUN=1

2011-12-05 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
Sorry, I doubt that it is fixed in Oneiric.

Trying to switch from Natty to Oneiric (latest patches) I tested it
yesterday. My Sierra did not work. I produced some debug output. Please
have a look:

modem-manager[2279]: debug [1323109715.342834]

modem-manager[2279]: info [1323109717.443580] [mm-serial-port.c:880]

IMHO this is the old problem, which Aleksander fixed in July. Oneiric
modem-manager still kills the modem via sending CFUN=1.

[Bug 819149] [NEW] Kernel panic after one or more suspend to ram / resume cycles

2011-08-01 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
Public bug reported:

Hi,

with Natty I get a kernel panic after at least one suspend to ram /
resume cycle, see the attached foto for the details.

[Bug 776469] Re: Alacarte kills the Application menu in XFCE 4.8

2011-05-30 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
This is a me too.

It is very easy to reproduce this issue. I did it in a virtual machine.
After installing ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso and adding xfce4 via apt-
get, no ~/.config/menus exists for an xfce user.

After starting alacarte and quitting it immediately by hitting ESC,
the directory ~/.config/menus is created with two files: settings.menu
and xfce-applications.menu.

Immediately the xfce applications menu is no longer available exactly as
Andreas described.

I think I found one workaround:

After having started alacarte once, I did:

cp -p /etc/xdg/menus/xfce-applications.menu ~/.config/menus

For the time being every thing seems to work.

I really hope that someone cares about the bug.

Gerd

P.S.: This does not happen in Xubuntu 11.04. The reason is _very_
simple: Xubuntu does not include alacarte, so there is no chance in
Xubuntu to utilize one of the major features of Xfce 4.8.

[Bug 376361] Re: Sierra MC8780 not working

2011-05-11 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
I just installed Natty with all available patches as of today.

Still MC8780 is not working.

Rebooting and choosing Karmic 9.10 MC8780 works just fine.

This is the main reason I cannot use newer Ubuntu versions than Karmic.

I really would help to debug the issue, but I already spent a lot of
time in googling, so without someone who really knows what's going on
this issue seems not be to resolvable ...

Really sad and frustrating ...

Re: [Bug 772399] Re: About 50% of all annotation content is not saved at saving a copy of the pdf

2011-04-29 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
Hi Marcel,

thanks for responding. The bug is quite easily reproducible. Here is
what I did:

I prepared a plain file with 10 comments:

lulu:/vm cat input.txt
Comment #1
lulu:/vm

The I copied /usr/share/doc/shared-mime-info/shared-mime-info-spec.pdf
in my working directory. I then opened the file with evince and did 10
annotations always using cut + paste. Finally I hovered with the mouse
over the annotations to assure they were all in place. This was the case.

I then saved the file as shared-mime-info-spec-with-10-annots.pdf, which
you will find enclosed.

As you will see, comments #1, #2, #3 and #10 are fine. All other
annotations have zero contents.

Hope this helps

Gerd

[Bug 772399] [NEW] About 50% of all annotation content is not saved at saving a copy of the pdf

2011-04-28 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Making quite a few annotations, I realized that after saving a copy,
closing and opening the saved file, approx. 50 % of all annotations had
a zero content.

AFAIK all annotations were in place. There color was fine (I used three
different colors in that document). But the contents was gone.

I could not find any rule for this.

Maybe I should mention, that I filled all annotations using copy
paste.

But you did in Intrepid, didn't you ?

This is from a log, taken in Intrepid:

For me personally this was the last Ubuntu, I could use my builtin
Sierra UMTS. In Jaunty pppd was killed immediately after start. In
Karmic Beta it worked for a short time, right now it doesn't.

So I'm really lost.

Unfortunately I'm not able to work around this (I tried wvdial /
gnome-ppp without success).

My only chance is to reboot, select Intrepid and I'm fine. But of course
this is _really_ annoying to put it politely.

In most combinations we see

[Bug 374443] [NEW] Jaunty: UMTS via Sierra: pppd terminates immediately

2009-05-10 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Hi,

with a fresh installed Jaunty and all patches as of today I cannot get a
network connection via my builtin Sierra card. pppd starts, but
terminates after a second or two. syslog says:

May 10 11:34:26 lulu pppd[4006]: pppd 2.4.5 started by root, uid 0
May 10 11:34:26 lulu pppd[4006]: Using interface ppp0

May 10 11:34:26 lulu pppd[4006]: CHAP authentication succeeded
May 10 11:34:26 lulu pppd[4006]: CHAP authentication succeeded
May 10 11:34:26 lulu NetworkManager: info (ttyUSB2): device state change: 6 $
May 10 11:34:26 lulu kernel: [ 472.324577] PPP BSD Compression module register$
May 10 11:34:26 lulu kernel: [ 472.341746] PPP Deflate Compression module regi$
May 10 11:34:27 lulu pppd[4006]: Modem hangup
May 10 11:34:27 lulu pppd[4006]: Connection terminated.

This is on a dual boot system (Intrepid/Jaunty). Using Intrepid I can
connect to the net via Sierra without probs, so hardware, account data
etc. are fine.

Looking for existing bugs I checked for /var/run/console/root but there
was no such file.

Please tell me what additional debug info is needed.

Kind regards

Gerd

Aahm - the bug report is about nv-driver, _NOT_ the nvidia-driver. You
can use free nv _OR_ nonfree nvidia. In the latter case there are other
downsides, xrandr e.g. does not work.

Sorry, I do not know where to set this. I did not find it in
 gnome-screensaver-preferences nor in gnome-power-preferences.
It's in gnome-power-preferences. See the attached screenshot for
 reference.

Sorry, I misunderstood your hint.

There is no difference between our configurations. If an xfce-user uses
the Quit-dialog, the screen will not be locked (this is what Jarno Suni
stated in #42052). If I change the action for power-button-is-pressed
from xfce-quit to suspend gnome-screensaver is run immediately (I have
no suspend button).

So you are right: pm-utils works fine.

My script is just a workaround to a bug in xfce (?) ...

Thanks for your time !

I installed Jaunty for test purposes (this time using Gnome desktop, not

[Bug 324321] Re: [Intrepid]: screen not locked after resume

2009-02-03 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
hyperair,

thanks for responding.

As you suggested, I tried using a fresh user - but nothing changed.

I than found bug #42052, a very old bug, which seems to be still alive
in Intrepid - at least for xfce-users.

Citing from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-
manager/+bug/42052

Jarno Suni wrote on 2008-12-16:

...
In Xfce4:
Additionally choose Power Management in Screensaver preferences and choose a
way to suspend/hibernate.
You can not use the Ask me option in Power Management preferences like above
(or you can, but it doesn't lock screen when you resume). Then use that way to
suspend/hibernate. In summary: whenever you suspend/hibernate using the Quit
dialog, screen will not be locked.

So from my point of view this is true.

So for the time being adding a script to /etc/pm/sleep.d is at least a solution
for a real problem. It works for me
and my data is safe now.

If you give me further hints how to debug I'd really like to help to
find the root cause though !

Thanks

Gerd

[Bug 324321] [NEW] [Intrepid]: screen not locked after resume

2009-02-02 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pm-utils

Hi,

after resume pm-utils on Intrepid

lulu:/home/bav dpkg -l | grep pm-utils
ii pm-utils 1.1.2.4-1ubuntu8
utilities and scripts for power management

do not lock the screen. This way everyone has immediately access to my
desktop. Think of ~/Private, which is unencrypted after resume !!!

There is /etc/acpi/resume.d/90-xscreensaver.sh, but I did not find such
a script in pm-utils. For the time being I hacked my own version, but I
really think this should be addressed.

I'm running xfce, if that makes any difference.

BTW, 90-xscreensaver.sh does not care about gnome-screensaver.

I reported this on bugzilla.xfce.org. See

Basically Nick stated that he will not fix it in 4.4 as the bug (at least for

So it seems we have to live with it :-(

[Bug 294352] [NEW] nm 0.7 tries to talk to MC8780 via /dev/ttyUSB0, should be ttyUSB2

2008-11-05 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Hi,

running nm-applet 0.7 on Hardy I tried to use my Sierra MC8780.
Unfortunately NetworkManager tries to talk to /dev/ttyUSB0. This fails.
AFAIK MC8780 can be used via ttyUSB2 only (I checked with minicom,
ttyUSB2 works, ttyUSB0 _not_).

Looking at lshal output, I see

modem.command_sets = {'GSM-07.07', 'GSM-07.05'} (string list)

tied to the UDI with ttyUSB0.

I then changed my
/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/10-modem.fdi to read

  match key=@info.parent:usb.product_id
int_outof=0x6802;0x6804;0x6803;0x6812;0x6813;0x6820;0x6
match key=@info.parent:usb.interface.number int=0
  match key=serial.port int=2
append key=info.capabilities type=strlistmodem/append
append key=modem.command_sets type=strlistGSM-07.07/append
append key=modem.command_sets type=strlistGSM-07.05/append
  /match
/match
  /match

After reboot I finally found:

So this obviously was no good idea.

Any hints how to configure this properly ?

BTW, this is exactly the same in Intrepid Ibex.

Does /sys/module/nvidia exist for you? or do you use the free nv driver?
 Can you please edit /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-suspend-
linux and add the following two lines right after the first line:

   set -x
   exec 2/suspend.log

and then try to suspend, and resume (or reboot, if it failed). Can you

Me too. In 8.10 beta unfortunately it is nm-applet, which sits in the

[Bug 253223] [NEW] hal-info: Hardy: 20-video-quirk-pm-fujitsu.fdi: E8410: Additional case for NVIDIA graphics necessary

2008-07-30 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
Public bug reported:

Hi,

the Fujitsu Lifebook E8410 comes in two flavours: Intel graphics or
NVIDIA graphics. Running Hardy currently suspend to RAM ist not possible
on E8410 with NVIDIA graphics (The Lifebook seems to suspend fine, but
freezes immediately after switching on power).

With the current 20-video-quirk-pm-fujitsu.fdi, pm-suspend is called
like this:

pm-suspend --quirk-s3-bios --quirk-s3-mode

This fails. If called without arguments, the Lifebook is resuming fine.

As a dirty hack I did:

Public bug reported:

[Bug 232206] Re: gnome-screensaver stays always black: lots of segfaults

2008-05-20 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
I just found:

[gs_debug_init] gs-debug.c:106 (16:55:21): Debugging enabled

So gnome-screensaver-dialog segfaults. And it is quite easy to reproduce
the bug.

[Bug 228358] [NEW] Intel Core Duo / Santa Rosa: Fan always at max. speed until nvidia-glx-new was installed

2008-05-08 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kernel-image-2.6.24-16-generic-di

Hi,

this is a Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook E8410 with Intel 965PM (aka Santa
Rosa) and Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9300 @ 2.50GHz and 4 GB RAM
running latest Hardy Kernel x86_64 as of today (08-05-08).

This CPU fan goes max as soon as GRUB has taken over control. It stays
max until the kernel is shut down. Being back in the BIOS the fan goes
down.

cpufreq works well. Depending on the load frequency varies from 800 to
2500. The fan is always running max.

This was not the case as long as Vista was running.

There seems to be a workaround: After I installed nvidia-glx-new, the
fan goes down as soon as the X-Server is started !!!

Some details:

[Bug 173425] Hard freeze Gutsy, may be easily reproduced on a box running Feisty fine all the time

2007-12-02 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-generic

Hi,

running my laptop under Feisty really fine, I installed Gutsy on a
separate partition. After some testing I found that trying to switch
from X to console via e.g. CTRL Alt F2 completely locks the box. This is
a real hard freeze.

To get more information, I ran netconsole. I got
[ 248.26] netconsole: network logging started
on the listening side.

Furthermore I was logged in via ssh on the Feisty box and I ran a ping
against the Feisty box.

When I press CTRL Alt F2 on the Laptop,
- ssh does not respond any longer
- ping gets no further pong
- no messages via netconsole

This may be reproduced at any time.

The box in question is an old laptop (+3yrs) with Intel Corporation
82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device, running fine all the time. I use
it all the time, so I am really sure, that this is an software issue.

I really would like to help to track this down.

Kind regards

Gerd

[Bug 97701] Re: Quod Libet could not find the 'filesrc Gstreamer element

2007-04-29 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
I ran quodlibet for quite a couple of months on edgy. The other day I updated
to feisty.
Now quodlibet does not run any longer, coming up the the exact message as Jim
reported.

[Bug 89509] Re: Clicking Edit Partition shows wrong partition size

2007-04-01 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 95400 ***

I just tested this with Daliy Build as of March 30 (ubiquity --version
1.4.4).

Sorry to say: Nothing has changed for me. Still New partition size 0.

When I drag the window a few pixel, the displayed value changes from 0
to 2000.

So the same behaviour as before for me.

Is there a way to avoid such a long delay ?

Re: [Bug 89509] Re: Clicking Edit Partition shows wrong partition size

2007-03-24 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
Colin Watson schrieb:
OK, this is expected; the installer didn't detect any filesystem it knew
about on sdb3, and at present it only shows a partition size in the
Edit partition dialog for the purposes of resizing the filesystem, so
you don't get a size displayed there if it can't resize the filesystem.

Did you experience any other similar problems in this run, other than
 sdb3?

Colin,

wish you were here - you certainly would get me right in no time at all.
But that's not possible - so I'll try to explain my problem better.

I just started the edgy-ubiquity on the box in question - everything
works as expected. I then started the new version coming with feisty.

I choose Partitiontable manual. I want to install Feisty on /dev/sdb1
(root) and /dev/sdb2 (swap). I do not want to change any partition size.

I highlight the line reading
/dev/sdb1 ext3 /media/sdb1 6448 MB

That's fine, there is an existing ext3 with an old edgy test
installation. So I click Edit Partition. A new window pops up telling me:

New partition size: 0# zero
use as: ext3
mountpoint: /media/sdb1

From this point on I'm lost. I do not know the precise partition size,
so I can't correct 0 to the right value in MB.

To be able to read better the main window, I dragged the Edit
Partition Window a bit aside. Strange enough: The value for new
partition size jumped from 0 to 2000. Weird ...

As I do not want to change my partition layout, I cancel the
installation.

Uuuuh ...

Same thing here with Feisty as of Thu, 08 Mar 2007 9:29:07 UTC.

and want to install on sdb1 / and sdb2 swap. I do not want to change the
partition layout (sda1 is kinda productive root).

Editing sdb1 gives me the wrong size 0. I cancel and edit sdb2. Here
size is shown correctly (2155). I cancel and click sdb3. Size should be
3224, but again 2155 is displayed. I cancel and go back to sdb1. 2155 is
displayed. I canceled the installation.

Kind regards

[Bug 71821] Installing Edgy on existing SuSE partitions fails: No rootfs

2006-11-14 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Hi,

I'm currently migrating some of my boxes from SuSE to Ubuntu. After
selecting the old SuSE root partition as the new root partition the
Ubuntu installer refused to continue, complaining No root file system.
This happened on two of my boxes. Thanks to strace being available on
the Ubuntu Live System I found that the installer issued

file -s /dev/sdb7 # with sdb7 carrying the old SuSE root file system

Doing this manually I got something like

x86 boot sector, code offset 0x48

I finally found that I had to overwrite the old GRUB sector doing

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb7 count=1

which made file -s report

Linux rev 1.0 ext3 filesystem data

Now the installer continued quite fine.
