[Bug 346238] Re: USB HD do not mount in 2.6.28-11 kernel

2009-08-11 Thread Henny Hofte
I re-installed Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha 6 i386 a few days ago.

This version works fine and boots all USB drives like before.
I then did a partial update yesterday.
It updated successfull, and this time it keeps mounting the USB drives on boot
:)

Even with my crappy Asus M2A-VM that seems to be riddled with bugs.
Due to ATI SB600 Northbridge bugs I get softreset errors on boot for every SATA
channel.
I have to install X64 Ubuntu versions with no more than 2GB RAM onboard,
otherwise the install crashes

So far installing 9.04 alpha 6 i386 and then upgrading is the only 9.04
that worked. All others will not install, or crash shortly after boot.

[Bug 346238] Re: USB HD do not mount in 2.6.28-11 kernel

2009-06-06 Thread Henny Hofte
Good news (for this bug). I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 i386 Alternate.
This contains kernel 2.6-30-5.

All USB drives are recognized and mounted on boot :)
This being alpha-1 there are probably lots of other bugs to hunt down. I
already found one. System freezes as soon as it tries to access the internet
(firefox or add program).

But my drives get mounted. Good start,

[Bug 346238] Re: USB HD do not mount in 2.6.28-11 kernel

2009-06-06 Thread Henny Hofte
It does seem Toby has the exact same problem I am having.
The only solution I found really worked for me was to revert to an older
version of Ubuntu that uses the 9.28-9 kernel (Ubuntu 9.04 Alpha 6) instead of
the 9.28-11 kernel. The off/on trick or adding a USB flash drive is not really
a solution. This problem exists under both 32 and 64 bit versions and different
desktops, so I suspect it is an USB related kernel bug Not local to Ubuntu or
Kubuntu. Before kernel 9.28-11 there was no problem. It all started for me with
the kernel update to 9.28-11.

[Bug 346238] Re: USB HD do not mount in 2.6.28-11 kernel

2009-05-21 Thread Henny Hofte
I am still having this problem. In general there seem to be problems
with USB devices with kernel 2.6.28-11 and later.

The system is very unstable and reboots for unknown reasons on a regular
basis.

This launchpad feedback system is almostcompletely unknown to me. Sure I
can post comments and report problems, but nothing seems to get done but
change of title? This problem report still says "undecided", Is
anything happening? It would be nice to know if there was. Meanwhile I
tried a lot of things, but they all failed.

i386 9.04 final , amd64 9.04 final

The only reasonably stable kernal/version for me was 2.6.28.9/Ubuntu
9.04 alpha 6. After that it's one disaster after another.

I am about to drop Ubuntu and move back to XP pro single boot. There's
simply more to life than installing unstable operating systems. I need
to get some work done once in a while too.

I still like the way Ubuntu works a lot and have enjoyed it while it
worked.

This situation has gone on too long for me however. I do appreciate
everyone's efforts to solve this, and still hope there will be a
solution in the future. I will keep an eye on this thread, but frankly
have lost all convidence. It's back to good old stable XP. the only OS
that always worked for me.

[Bug 128938] Re: k3b hangs on launch with usb dvd burner TSSTCorp TS-H552b

2009-05-03 Thread Henny Hofte
This little trick might help:

Try switching off/on any USB device or inserting a new USB device before
using the external burner.

[Bug 346238] Re: USB HD do not mount in 2.6.28-11 kernel

2009-04-24 Thread Henny Hofte
I installed 9.04 AMD64 final. Almost the same thing happens. My external USB
drives are not mounted.
However, when I added a Sandisk Microdrive with 4GB SDHC card, something woke
up and all drives were suddenly mounted and recognised again. The same thing
happens when I turn off - on one of my USB drives. All the drives suddenly get
mounted.

Maybe there is some initialization that does not go as it should on my
desktop. The weird thing is, my EEEPC has no problems at all.

Anyway, I can live very well with this situation.

Hopefully this little trick can help others too.
