[Bug 1561902] Re: Total system freeze after 3.16.0-38.52
Windows 10 is freezing in the exact same way. I guess something is broken in this laptop and I'll keep using 3.13.x now and Windows 7 until 2019. If the laptop survives that far :) thanks for the help Stefan! ** Changed in: linux-lts-utopic (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1561902 Title: Total system freeze after 3.16.0-38.52 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-lts-utopic/+bug/1561902/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1561902] Re: Total system freeze after 3.16.0-38.52
Hi again. I'm continously trying different scenarios, with and without text mode, different kernels, wifi on or off, but I can't say for sure what's going on. A daily image (from 15.4) of Xubuntu Xenial froze after about an hour of usage and after just a couple of minutes the following boot. This weekend I've been using 3.16.0-67 kernel and have not seen a single freeze. That is so weird. Two weeks ago it froze within minutes with that kernel and the exact same hardware and everything. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1561902 Title: Total system freeze after 3.16.0-38.52 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-lts-utopic/+bug/1561902/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1561902] Re: Total system freeze after 3.16.0-38.52
Thanks for the ideas! Did you mean 3.16.0-67 and not -87? I tried -67 now with and without vesafb:mtrr:0. System freezes within minutes in both cases. I also tried mainline 3.16.7-ckt26-trusty and added vesafb:mtrr:3 to this and the system does NOT seem to freeze. This bug is weird. 3.16.0-38 was the first kernel with problems and mtrr was the only change that is not included in mainline. Why are mainline kernels working and normal not...? I want to believe that setting vesafb:mtrr:3 as boot parameter is exactly the same as setting mtrr = 3 in source code. (as said here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1434581/comments/48) No ctrl-alt-f1 or alt-ctrl-sysrq is possible when the system has frozen. Nothing works. Not even the WiFi LED from the hardware switch. I started a "find *.* /" after 3.16.0-67 boot and noticed that all disc activity stopped when system freezes. That probably tells that this is not just keyboard/mouse/graphics issue?

[Bug 1561902] Re: Total system freeze after 3.16.0-38.52
Hi! Thanks for your time. I really appreciate it. [Bug 1561902] Re: Total system freeze after 3.16.0-38.52
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected trusty ** Description changed: This should have been reported already last year, but here it goes. Problem: My laptop is a ASUS N71JA and works perfectly in Windows. Everything was fine with Xubuntu 14.04 through kernels 3.13 and 3.16 up to 3.16.0-38.52. Desktop freezes, like totally dies with hard power reset being the only option, every now and then from this kernel and onwards. This affects 3.19 and 4.2.0 kernels released after this date as well. No Magic SysRq possible and I can't see anything fancy in syslog or kern.log. Desktop can die anytime between immediately after boot or after a few hours, but it happens completely randomly and is hard to debug. Workaround: 3.16.0-38.52 was released in May 2015 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-lts-utopic/+bug/1452882). 3.16.0-37.51 and 3.16.0-36.48 have NEVER frozen. The only non-upstream change that was made to 3.16.0-38.52 was "vesafb: Set mtrr:3 (write-combining) as default" (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1434581). This is probably not implemented in the mainline kernel tree, right? [Bug 873132] Re: [HDA-Intel - HDA Intel, playback] G51Vx No sound after 11.10 install (Fix inside)
Awesome. Thanks! I'm on an Asus N71JA and had never had any problems but after fresh install of 11.10 this didn't work correctly anymore. It doesn't however work 100% correctly: If I plug in my headset the speaker gets muted, but pulling them out and putting them back again mutes Speaker channel and I'm left without any sound at all. But it does mute the physical speaker correctly though. [Bug 508632] Re: Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone
True. But 1. The toggle mode is still lost. - Yes why would I ever want to toggle back? Suddenly I might find myself more comfortable browsing to the place anyway. Maybe I didn't remember it's correct path by heart? Now I must click some random Back or Parent directory button or browse somewhere to have it restored. 2. What kind of hand (or keyboard) am I supposed to have to feel comfortable to do CTRL L with my left hand already on the keyboard? L for Location I know but still. - The button was easy to reach with mouse pointer since I probably was browsing normally when I needed the feature, thus it was positioned 3-4cm below the button. Now I need to do some bizarre ninja move to find LCTRL L since it doesn't toggle with RCTRL. Wouldn't CTRL G then be better? If we're looking for UI elements that takes lot of space for something thats not commonly used I'd say remove the Delete sidebar button and replace it with the toggle button. I've never needed to delete the sidebar and if I ever needed to I could easily do that from View-Sidebar or even F9. Now I find myself deleting the sidebar instead of toggling to text mode since the Delete sidebar button is where I'd expect the toggle button to be. -- Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/508632 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 508632] Re: Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone
But we do not want it to be enabled by default. I want to be able to toggle between the modes. I find the button really useful when I quickly want to type in and jump to /usr/share/whatever instead of navigating manually. On the other hand the default layout is really useful since you can middle click on parent parent directories and browse further in another tab. Alexander Larsson had an effective day with lots of commits. Put tabs at bottom has already been reverted upstream. This was the commit before that. Hopefully someone could revert these strange UI changes that bring few pros and many cons. I've never seen that button as something ugly or unnecessary. http://git.gnome.org/browse/nautilus/commit/?id=4b49aab5aa6a9ef9ab288ff2ce463affca1eacf2 This takes a lot of space for something thats not commonly used. Especially with two of it visible in split view mode. [Bug 363695] Re: update-apt-xapian-index uses too much CPU
Not trying to cause a me too storm or anything, but since I promised to mention more exactly for how long it uses my CPU I'll add yet another comment. On AMD 3700+ it uses maximum resources for 40-60s. The situation is better now than in Jaunty where it would consume resources on almost every boot while in Karmic it runs more seldom. Still bad though when I was running Gimp, Word 2007 through Wine and Firefox that this suddenly bounces up and makes everything sluggish :S If it has to run, run when computer is not in use. -- update-apt-xapian-index uses too much CPU https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/363695 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 280657] Re: Intrepid kernel 2.6.27-6 no supported image sensor dected for SN9C105 (045e, 00f7)
I've used Karmic Beta to play a little bit more with my VX-1000 and I've actually got a couple of images of myself :) Motion works and 1 of 10 (or something) images taken is actually showing my entire face and not just parts of it. This is in Virtualbox 3.0.6 in a Jaunty host with 2.6.30.5 kernel. Karmic has got latest gspca compiled and installed. However I had to compile it with make -i all since firedtv-1394.o had errors and compilation halted. I installed it since without it the camera wasn't working as it should and since a kernel downgrade to 2.6.30.5 didn't help, maybe a newer driver would help. It looks like Cheese, Skype, vgrabbj and motion initialize the webcamera, the first frame is being captured and drawn but then something happens and the image shown is more or less corrupt. The result varies from 100% Isak to 100% green color. Cheese, Skype and vgrabbj throw - as shown below - errors. I've tried all programs with the LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so switch and at least vgrabbj seems to work better with it. i...@isak-desktop:~$ LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so cheese libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 1 more bits libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 3 more bits libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 1 more bits libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 2 more bits libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: unknown huffman code: libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: unknown huffman code: ffd9 libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 1 more bits libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 3 more bits libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 1 more bits libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 1 more bits i...@isak-desktop:~$ cheese libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 2 more bits libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: unknown huffman code: libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 3 more bits libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 1 more bits libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: unknown huffman code: ff99 libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 3 more bits libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: unknown huffman code: libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 6 more bits libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: error: more then 63 AC components (68) in huffman unit libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 3 more bits libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 3 more bits libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 2 more bits libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: unknown huffman code: ffd9 libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: unknown huffman code: libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: unknown huffman code: libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 2 more bits i...@isak-desktop:~$ Dmesg throws something that looks like this (the digits varies from time to time): [ 693.146036] gspca: frame overflow 32848 32768 i...@isak-desktop:~$ dmesg [7.634085] Linux video capture interface: v2.00 [7.691763] gspca: main v2.7.0 registered [7.718637] vboxadd: Successfully loaded version 3.0.6 (interface 0x00010004) [7.849353] gspca: probing 045e:00f7 [7.880352] sonixj: Sonix chip id: 11 [7.890557] gspca: /dev/video0 created [7.890596] gspca: probing 045e:00f7 [7.890605] gspca: intf != 0 [7.890629] gspca: probing 045e:00f7 [7.890638] gspca: intf != 0 [7.890986] usbcore: registered new interface driver sonixj [7.891019] sonixj: registered So the driver exists, it think it does what it should but some setting somewhere is a little bit bad. -- Intrepid kernel 2.6.27-6 no supported image sensor dected for SN9C105 (045e, 00f7) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/280657 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
