Re: [Bug 1573923] [NEW] Spellchecker plugin not working in 16.04 (gtkspell not recognized)

2016-04-23 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
To verify the install. You can try running python and then "import
gtkspell". If this runs without error, zim should be able to use it as
well. If it gives an error, zim will also not be able to use it.

Btw. make sure python packages are for python 2, not python 3.

Jaap

[Bug 1562511] Re: No words in articles after importing notebook

2016-04-05 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
If I understand correctly, you first export zim to HTML then try to
import HTML back into zim - is that correct ?

Afraid this is not supported. The import function does not support HTML.

Re: [Bug 1258886] [NEW] Zim stuck, killall zim - no process, kill parent python - bug report popup

2013-12-09 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Will look into the code recovering processes.

What might help for this kind of cases is to first run zim --index after
pulling in the repository. That way the index is rebuilt, and the GUI will
be more responsive when first opening the notebook.

 I've also tried to get python 2.6 from our IT department up and

 for reasons and it surely would pay off. Then I can start zim
 directly from teh workstation.

 By the way, most if not all python programs start with
 #!/usr/bin/python

 presuming that there is a new python version. This may be
 not true. Of course you can alwaas start zim by
 /path_to_new_python/python zim.py

 Or, consider to let PATH decide what python should be taken:
 #!/bin/env python

This will be search which means finding other pages. Searching
inside the current page is called Find. (Don't hit me about it -
this is standard jargon from the interface guide.)

So this patch adds a search box in the upper right of the screen, what
seems to be the standard location now for many browsers and similar

[Bug 134736] Re: Integrate search in the side pane

2013-02-18 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Code below can be added in zim/gui/__init__.py just below the call
self.uimanager.ensure_update() (around line 540) and will add a search
entry in the toolbar. In my mind this removes the need for adding search
to the side pane, but open to suggestions.

###
space = gtk.SeparatorToolItem()
space.set_draw(False)
space.set_expand(True)
self.mainwindow.toolbar.insert(space, -1)

def inline_search(entry, *a):
text = entry.get_text()
if text:
self.show_search(text)

from zim.gui.widgets import InputEntry
entry = InputEntry()
if gtk.gtk_version = (2, 16):
entry.set_icon_from_stock(gtk.ENTRY_ICON_SECONDARY,
gtk.STOCK_FIND)
entry.set_icon_activatable(gtk.ENTRY_ICON_SECONDARY,
True)
entry.set_icon_tooltip_text(gtk.ENTRY_ICON_SECONDARY,
_('Search Pages...'))
# FIXME would be nice to have function to set Search as grey
background
#entry.set_icon_to_clear()
entry.connect('activate', inline_search)
entry.connect('icon-release', inline_search)
entry.show()
item = gtk.ToolItem()
item.add(entry)
self.mainwindow.toolbar.insert(item, -1)

I have seen that one before in my own testing, but disappeared after re-
indexing the notebook. Have put an additional catch in the code to
report it.

@bruce: afraid the strace log is to low level for me. If you have the
python stack trace, that would be much more readable to understand what
is going on. B.t.w. why do you think this is the same bug as parent?
From the description, it sounds like it might be something different. In
that case please open a new report instead of commenting here.

Or does gnome-panel also include app-indicator menus now ?

 btw.: to reproduce the reported problem live, one has to move the last

 iter for the invalid tuple. When another child is used, the treepath
 remains valid (it just refers to the wrong page, which isn't noticed).
 When the moved page isn't displayed, the critical treeview line isn't
 touched in the problematic update.

OK, the fact that it needs to be the last page in a sub-tree is
probably the reason why I was not able to reproduce before.

May need a deeper fix by tracing where the wrong index comes from.
Either the select_page should not happen for a non-existing page, or
at least it should not find a treepath for this page...

Your patch at least will stop the exceptions and resulting bug reports
:)

Re: [Bug 981419] Re: Missing Integration as default program for opening .zim files

2012-05-04 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Seem to be an issue in nautilus or whatever component does the lookup
for the relevant application.

Notes (on my system):
* /usr/share/applications/zim.desktop exists
* it correctly lists application/x-zim-notebook
* it is index, the same mimetype shows in /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache
* in nautilus the properties of the zim.notebook file show the same mimetype
* double clicking in nautilus goes to a text editor

Expected:
* double clicking in nautilus opens zim

Additional notes:
* xdg-mime query filetype also gives the correct mimetype
* xdg-open again opens in text editor (wrong) -- probably uses gnome component
* gnome-open also goes to text editor (wrong)
* mimeopen does open the file with zim (correct)

So think this bug should be assigned to proper Gnome component - not
sure which project that would be.

Zim has a daemon process, which controls a number of child processes

letting the daemon know by sending SIGCHILD.

that ?

[Bug 835975] [NEW] Drag to bookmark in side pane does not work

2011-08-28 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Public bug reported:

When I drag drop a file to a bookmarked folder in the side pane, the drag is
not accepted and the file stays where it is.
Expected it to be moved to the bookmarked folder.
* Drag is not accepted, folder does not highlight/select as drag target when
the drag icon is over it, releasing the mouse the drag icons floats back to
drag start located
* The folder in question is Downloads which is on the local file system and
opens fine when clicked.
* Copy pasting with keyboard shortcuts to do the same move works fine.
* Drag to a folder in the Computer or Devices sections of the side pane
(E.g. Desktop) is accepted, so issue seems limited to Bookmarks section

[Bug 613303] Re: Zim Desktop Wiki description is confusing

2011-01-13 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Comment from debian package maintainer (copied here so I don't forget
about it when reviewing):

-
On Mon, 10 Jan 2011, Chris Wilson wrote:

Thanks for your patches. First of I'd like to point out that the
description put in debian/control is based on the upstream description of
the project. So you probably want to submit this to upstream as well so
that they update their readme.txt and their website.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/zim/+filebug

Then your updated description is not correct:
 + Uses of Zim include:
 + • TODO lists
 + • Taking notes during meetings
 + • Drafting blog entries and emails
 + • Brainstorming

This is not a valid list in a description field. You need to have 2
spaces at the start otherwise the lines will be wrapped together. And you
should probably avoid UTF-8 characters.

So it should be:

 Uses of Zim include:
  * TODO lists
  * Taking notes during meetings
  * Drafting blog entries and emails
  * Brainstorming

A few more remarks:

 + Zim is a graphical text editor which allows the user to maintain a
collection

which allows is generally bad-style - text editor used to maintain

 + of wiki-style interconnected pages. The text of each page can
contain links

Why the text ? Each page can contain links.

 like
 + in an outliner, and can have attachments.
   .
 - This tool can be used to keep track of TODO lists or ideas,
 - to take notes during a meeting or to draft any other kind of
 - text (blog entries, important mails, etc.).
 + Various plugins provide additional functionality, like a task list manager,
 + an equation editor, a tray icon, and version control.
 + .

As a whole, it looks like an improvement though. Thanks for the work.

[Bug 613303] Re: Zim Desktop Wiki description is confusing

2011-01-13 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
So proposal including comments of Raphael and Joos becomes:

Zim is a graphical text editor used to maintain a collection of wiki pages.
Each page can contain links to other pages, simple formatting and inline
images. Pages are stored in a folder structure, like in an outliner, and
can have attachments. Creating a new page is as easy as linking to a
nonexistent page. All data is stored in plain text files with wiki formatting.
Various plugins provide additional functionality, like a task list manager,
an equation editor, a tray icon, and support for version control.

Zim can be used to:
  * Keep an archive of notes
  * Take notes during meetings or lectures
  * Organize task lists
  * Draft blog entries and emails
  * Do brainstorming

I feel we are getting towards a good simple description that is also
technical correct and contains all the right keywords :)

Any more comments ?

Jaap

Re: [Bug 613303] Re: Zim Desktop Wiki description is confusing

2011-01-10 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
On Sat, Jan 8, 2011 at 5:53 PM, Chris Wilson afrowi...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi Jaap, what do you think of the following? I've written it to contain
 the word 'wiki' while briefly describing how a wiki works for those user
 unfamiliar with the term.

 Zim is a graphical text editor which allows the user to maintain a collection
  of wiki-style interconnected notes. The text of each note can have certain
  important keywords highlighted with a link that provides a connection
  to another note named after the highlighted text. This new note can provide
  details on the meaning of the highlighted text, and can even contain links of
  its own.
  .
  Uses of Zim include:
  • TODO lists
  • Taking notes during meetings
  • Drafting blog entries and emails
  • Brainstorming

I'm sorry, but I'm afraid that phrases like certain important
keywords highlighted with a link and another note named after the
highlighted text only make it more confusing. This sounds to me like
a technical definition of a hyperlink, but not really like a
description for end users. Wouldn't it suffice to say something like
the text of each note can contain links to other pages as well as
simple formatting -- I assume every user knows what a link is in this
internet age (you could replace link by hyperlink). Another
problem I have with this description is that it talks about notes
while the zim user interface consistently talks about pages.

My counter proposal would be something like:

Zim is a graphical text editor which allows the user to maintain a collection
of wiki-style interconnected pages. The text of each page can contain links
to other pages as well as simple formatting. Creating a new page is as easy
as linking to a nonexistent page. Pages are stored in a folder structure, like

[Bug 613303] Re: Zim Desktop Wiki description is confusing

2011-01-08 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Hi, I'm the maintainer of zim (upsteam). I agree that the description
could be more clear and I'm open to suggestions. So far I have not seen
a proposal for a text to replace it that seems better to me. If there is
a concrete proposal I will consider it for the description in the
upstream project page etc. Of course you are free to go ahead with a
modified version in the ubuntu or debian packages.

In any case I would appreciate it if the reference to wiki style
editing is kept in the description since I know from discussions with
actual users that this is a common search term that makes people end up
with zim.

[Bug 584198] Re: search doesn't work after upgrade to lucid

2010-07-05 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
I think version 0.47 would still require you to manually re-encode files
with non-utf8 encoding to import them. Fixing that would be a valid
feature request and is quite different from this bug, so it requires
it's own report.

 problem (often just an apostrophe or a pound sign)) and save the file.
 TBH, it would be handy if ZIM would at least identify the duff files en
 masse. On version 0.43, all that happens is the file does not open and
 then you have to restart ZIM because no other file will open either -
 except oddly, in a new window! That is really tedious.

This sounds like a valid concern to me. Could you open a new bug
report to describe this issue ?

Thanks,

 A bit early to mark this bug as invalid methinks. A space character in a

 Traceback (most recent call last):

 UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf8' codec can't decode byte 0x96 in position 50:

 DEBUG: Closed dialog Search

In this case the error is not due to the space. Please note that zim
never uses a space character in file names and ignores any files that
do have spaces in the file name. The warning states that the file is
ignored, the error probably is triggered by one of the subsequent
files.

Was the file with the space written by zim - or is it some other file
you imported ?

 Also, it would appear that a bad character *inside* a file also causes the
 search to fail as well! At least, I'm guessing that is the cause of this
 debug output because all my files use standard ascii chars - and no spaces:-
...

Off course. Zim strictly uses utf-8 for page contents, any other
encoding will cause it to fail. File written by zim should always be
utf-8.

 Please don't dismiss this as invalid. Zim is a great tool. But without a
 reliable search, sadly it becomes practically useless and one might as
 well use Kate or something.

Please state which version of zim you are using. If it is an older
version than 0.47 please verify if this is present in the latest
version as well. If you do see this in zim 0.47 it is better to start
a new bug report instead of appending here. New reports are reviewed,
but comments to a closed report are liable to be missed.

There is an unofficial ubuntu package for download on the website.
Should work seamlessly on Lucid.

 To answer your other question, I do have some files that were imported

 quite a few of my older notes files came from a Windows system - written

 enabled me to file notes properly.

This is something that is intended to work. However it is very
difficult to guess the encoding of text files, especially when they
came from different systems. Current only way to do that is to either
manually or with some script convert the files to utf-8 and than
import them in zim.

I don't believe this is specific for search, trying to open those
pages would give the exact same error.

[Bug 584198] Re: search doesn't work after upgrade to lucid

2010-05-25 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
There is some work being done on issues with file system encoding. But
the fix will be that we just ignore any files that have invalid
characters in the name. If the filesystem encoding can not decode the
character there is no way we can guess the correct encoding and handle
it correctly.

Probably due to a glitch in either gtk itself or the gtk-perl bindings.
A bug in the perl code in which the application is written should never

advise closing it.

2008-11-11 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
I agree, but it is difficult to have a detailed advise. Keep in mind
that the actual package name and the actual latex implementation can
vary between linux distributions. In fact some distributions allow you
to choose from multiple implementations. Also I do not think an error
message is the right place to include this info.

In the redesign I'm working on there will be more room for plugins to
have their own preferences and information text in the menu where you
enable them.

But it kind of sucked loosing network connectivity after a simple update

documented more clearly with 8.10 now being a release candidate and all.

[Bug 235682] Re: zim doesn't pickup repositories.list at the start, i.e. it is not backward compatibile to version 0.23

2008-07-13 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
I consider it fixed because I could no longer reproduce in 0.24 and
double checked the code for consistency.

Regards,

Jaap

In zim 0.24 both interfaces use the same routine internally and are
consistent.

[Bug 145275] Re: Zim highlights when using the underline button

2008-05-13 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Although not entirely intuitive, this is intended behavior. You can edit
the style config file to change back to real underline.

Probably it would be a good thing to make this configuration more
visible in the interface. I opened bug #230160 to track that feature.

[Bug 134736] Re: Integrate search in the side pane

2008-05-07 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
** Summary changed:

- zim: emphasize 'Search (in notes)'
+ Integrate search in the side pane

** Description changed:

+ To make search feature more prominent, we should integrate it in the
+ side pane, this is were users will expect to see it.
+
+
+ Original summary: zim: emphasize 'Search (in notes)'
+ Original desription:
+
  Binary package hint: zim

  Search in notes is possible through a shortcut (Ctrl-Shift-F) or by
  menu, but is much too important to stay 'hidden'.

  For emphasizing this function, consider the following:
  - icon on the main screen
  - or search box above side pane (search-as-you-type)

  Also, number of hits (= number of occurrences in note) can give an
  indication of releveance. Number of hits can be mentioned in parenthesis
  after the note name.

[Bug 134733] Re: zim: emphasize clickable backlinks

2008-05-05 Thread Jaap Karssenberg
Added ... to label to hint that this item will popup. Don't want to
put elements in the statusbar that attract to much attention (see also
HIG) so no futher changes planned. Functionality also available trough
the menubar.
