[Bug 1868853] [NEW] GNOME extension “Internet Radio” stops when the screen goes blank
Public bug reported: My Ubuntu version is 18.04 (fresh install more than one year ago). GNOME version is 3.28.2 I installed the "Internet Radio" Gnome shell extension a few days ago (using Software / Add-ons / Shell Extensions). gnome-control-center: a) automatic locking is OFF. b) automatic screen blanking is ON after 5 minutes. So after 5 minutes of inactivity "Internet Radio" stops because the screen is blanked after 5 minutes. For me this is not normal because radio should continue to play even if the screen goes blank. I did not find any setting which could change this behaviour. Hello, Since some weeks, maybe months (I can't tell you exactly because I did not put attention to it as it was not often enough) the X server still crashes and I am returned to the login screen. I was surprised yesterday because I could reproduce the problem by clicking on a link on a specific site and the X server would crash at each time. So I ran again glxinfo and again each time, X server crashes: the Xorg.log file shows it is a segmentation fault. I could generate an crash file but apport can't upload it: first because apport uses glxinfo and second because if not using glxinfo (by temporarily renaming it) it displays the following message The program crashed on an assertion failure, but the message could not be retrieved. Apport does not support reporting these crashes. with the title Problem in xserver-xorg-core, probably because as you said ubuntu-bug won't upload a bug report on an unofficial package version. Then I tested glxinfo: there is no crash anymore! glxinfo | grep direct rendering: YES celestia (1.6.0): no crash also but once launched it is slow: after celestia has launched and displayed the welcome message, top shows that the process celestia-gnome takes all the cpu available, e.g. 95% of the cpu, even when I do nothing in celestia. In celestia, If I move the mouse pointer (a cross) from the main graphics window to the File menu option, the pointer takes about 1 to 4 seconds to change to the arrow shape. I thought I could use the backtrace with gdb above even without logging in from a remote machine but it seems this is not possible. In the gdb session, after you attached to the process, typed continue and typed ctrl-alt-f7 to go to the gui screen, the machine freezes completely. However I recalled that I did produce a crash file three days ago by running sudo service apport start force_start=1. However I could not upload it, and I don't know why (may be too big ? it was a 3MB gzipped size) As I since downloaded the three .dbg packages (xserver-xorg-core-dbg, xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg and libgl1-mesa-dri-gdb), I ran again the above command, and I could produce a second crash file. I don't know if the crash file generation procedure uses them and if it will be useful. The gzipped size is now 4MB ... Brian, I do not have the Option Shadow True in my xorg.conf. If I insert it, restart the GUI and run xglinfo, actually yes I do have a crash ! The GUI disapears and the screen seems in a logged off position but is black with the mouse pointer in the middle of the screen. When I launch the ubuntu-bug to create the bug, first ubuntu-bug asked me to create a crash file, so I started apport, then re-ran ubuntu-bug, but ubuntu-bug then seems to trigger the X crash when collecting the files ... I have right now the crash file in /var/crash/_usr_bin_Xorg.0.crash available. As ubuntu-bug cannot complete, I tried to file the bug with sudo apport-cli -c /var/crash/_usr_bin_Xorg.0.crash but this command also crashes the X server ... I opened the bug directly via Launchpad: number is #640058 I cannot upload the crash file, even gzipped (about 2,5MB) ... too big ? Brian, Per your comment #231, I removed the shadow branch PPA: ok I installed the version 2:2.12.0+git20100913.08c2caca-0ubuntu0sarvatt~lucid: I guess this is the version from xorg-edgers. Then I shutdown my computer and powered on again. I tested glxinfo | grep direct rendering: answer is direct rendering: Yes. I can also run my Celestia program (which uses OpenGL I think), so this seems stable. So have not the segmentation fault anymore. Thank you for the help. @Anthony: thank you for your info. Maybe you are right. I am not expert enough with this. As I told before the youtube video seems significantly more jerky than before, but I can't tell you for sure if this is since upgrading to 10.04, or upgrading my X server to 1.8.2, sorry for this. Maybe there exist some performance measurement tool that would reflect more objectively this video fluidity downgrade ... I was looking a video from http://www.youtube.com/NASATelevision and found the video very jerky, however it was already jerky before my upgrade to X 1.8.2 and the 2.12 intel video driver from Brian package. I think this jerky effect became very pronounced since I upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04. Hence, I wanted to know if hardware acceleration was working or not. Looking at ubuntu forum I found I could use the command: glxinfo | grep direct rendering to have the answer. So I typed the glxinfo command above and the result was (all three in a row): 1 - the GUI disappeared, replaced by many error text lines 2 - a black screen (cursor at upper left corner) 3 - the GUI reappeared but offering me to logon ... By looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old, I can see a segmentation fault occured (see attached file). Can't I use the glxinfo command ? Brian, Follow-up of my #214: I tried many times figuring out how to make vesa driver make use of the 1024x768, to no avail. Each time modifying the xorg.conf file and adjusting the screen and monitor sections with tricks I found on the change resolution/refresh rate in Xorg HOWTO (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=83973). After all may be vesa cannot use higher resolution than 640x480, but most probably I haven't understood some basics about how all these things works :-) Anyway, I just realized about an hour ago that I could upgrade from the 2.11 driver to the version 2.12 provided by your package. And by issuing the command sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel=2:2.12.0+shadow+77.gb933ead-lucid2 I could upgrade to the 2.12 (compiled for the 1.8.2 X server!) then I had again to re-enable KMS using workaround A from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes#Workaround%20A:%20Re- enable%20KMS, otherwise I got the intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected error from the X server and a black screen (CTRL-ALT-F1 usable though). I am up again with my preferred resolution 1024x768 !! My X server is now therefore 1.8.2 and intel driver version is 2.12.0 (from your package). Brian, I did the: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers sudo add-apt-repository ppa:brian-rogers/intel-shadow and then the apt-get update apt-get upgrade commands. because (I guess) KMS was still enabled I always had a black screen after bootup. The sequence was this: IBM BIOS screen Grub loading stage1.5. Starting up ...(bold) Starting up ...(thin) Ubuntu (white) + the five red dots black screen + fixed cursor at upper left corner (monitor LED is fixed green) the little drum sound (which says the GUI is ready) but I could almost always do CTRL-ALT-F1 and (blindly) to a text login and then reboot. then I disabled KMS and I can now have the GNOME logon screen but however is sticks at 640x480, i.e. using gnome-display-properties (because you cannot have access to the System menu at 640x480) you cannot change anything; the detect monitor button does nothing. I am right now adding this comment using this VGA resolution... Here attached more details on my current configuration. Tell me if you need more information. Brian, I did an important omission: the Xorg.0.log file. Here it is. It shows that X cannot work with my intel driver because it is not compiled for the X server version 1.8. (as you mentioned in your post #204 offering your ppa). Attempting to solve my i845 X problems (subject of this master bug report) I did install (see my post #202) the 2.11 intel driver (which is compiled for the version 1.7.6 of X) and I am still using it... and I don't know how to detach from it: I did a sudo ppa-purge ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates but when asking me if I accept the proposed solution, I did not know what to do (the score was -8386: what does this mean ?) anyway, the vesa driver is then loaded automatically BUT it configures itself at the VGA resolution and cannot do better. what do I need to do to either: - install the intel driver from your ppa intel-shadow? - or (in the meantime), make the vesa able to display upper resolutions e.g. 1024x760 ? Hello, Eight days ago, I applied Workaround C (upgading to the 2.11.0 xserver-xorg-video-intel driver, from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes). Note that upon reboot I could not get the normal Gnome logon screen but instead had the following errors: ! Ubuntu fonctionne en mode graphique dégradé. L'erreur suivante est survenue. The 3 or 4 last hangs were different: the GUI was completely frozen: it did not answer the mouse or keyboard clicks (the mouse pointer was movable though). As a test, I checked just one transaction, then quitted the reconciliation in the usual manner, and came back into it: my check was lost again. I did a save, exited the gnucash application, re-launched it, then re-did a check in the reconciliation window, to no avail: gnucash does not want to record my checks anymore... I remember that it did not work very well and I did not notice the error about the missing swap. do you think I can use the /dev/mapper/Ubuntu-swap_1 file for the mkswap command ? Public bug reported: the problem is that sometimes, after the triggering of some event, the machine becomes progressively very slow so that i am to ctrl-alt-backspace to force the closing of the Gnome session. Some event seems to trigger the slowness which become more and more important: for example the mouse pointer does not respond instantly to the mouse movement. A mouse click will not take effect instantly. When the slowness comes in, i can see the following: - constant disk access - i have the System Monitor on my gnome panel: the load (in red) is becoming more and more important to reach about five (the little black box becomes progressively red) - the cpu indicator of the System Monitor shows many many picks very close to each other so that you cannot see some black color in the box, but it is rather light blue - when I could use top to look at the processes, more and more processes appeared with a D status (which is defined as uninterruptible sleep in the top man page). The first time the problem occured i was browsing with Firefox. Is is not that as soon as I launched Firefox, the machine would become slower; it is that at some later time an event triggered that made appear progressively the slowness. So I installed epiphany, and it seemed that i did not get the problem anymore: but later I wanted to see the site http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/tracking/ and epiphany asked me to download the applet but it did not work, so i suspected the java plugin not configured for epiphany, so i configured it and then I relauched epiphany and went back to the above site and the slowness started to appear ... I think I can reproduce the problem by trying to executing a Java applet, but that is not sure. I will try again the above applet and will let you know. this problem started to appear about 10 days ago and I can't trace back what I did or what changed which created the problem. Maybe an online update. I have Ubuntu 6.10, kernel 2.6.17-11. Hello, I used GDB (apport seems more complicated to use). I had to run gnome-panel-screenshot 14 times before the application crashes. You'll find in the attachment the trace of the last (fourteenth!) gnome- panel-screenshot run. Sorry but I don't know how to install the debug symbols for this application. However, I did install gnome-panel-dbg, but I just see that this is not used because file /usr/bin/gnome-panel shows that I have the stripped version. Do you know how to activate the non-stripped copy of gnome-panel ? as additional information (may be it would be useful): during my 2 previous gnome-panel-screenshot sessions in gdb, in order to attempt to reproduce the crash, I switched my window from the gdb terminal to other graphics window i.e. evolution. I mean: 1 - I launched gnome-panel-screenshot (run), 2 - ALT-TAB on evolution (for example) 3 - gnome-panel-screenshot appears above the evolution window 4 - I clicked Save 5 - then, either the crash occurs or not (but capture file is created). 6 - ALT-TAB to the gdb session in terminal. 7 - goto 1 above This time, I wanted to see what appened if I did not ALT-TAB to another window: Therefore in gdb I ran 20 times gnome-panel-screenshot without ALT-TABing to another window: I could not crash gnome-panel-screenshot: may be if I continued more tries it would have crashed, I don't know. Then I did 7 additional runs with ALT-TABing as described above: gnome- panel-screenshot crashed on the 7th. Anyway, here is a more complete trace with I more debugging symbols. I did not mean to know the details of what is really the problem. It is simply what you told me: the version of hubackup I have (0.0.2) has the bug I opened, and the solution is to upgrade to 0.0.6, but before I would need to upgrade my linux to Edgy. As of today (I checked on the http://packages.ubuntu.com/ site): the hubackup version available for dapper is 0.0.2. The hubackup version available for edgy is 0.0.6. Hope this answers your question. The name displayed by Nautilus is: USB DISK 28X: usbdisk. the df command displays: /dev/sda1 3,8G 2,3G 1,4G 64% /media/usbdisk I was just trying to use HUB by clicking the peripheral it displays... I mean, the graphical interface of HUB does not let me choose which path syntax I use: it is up to him to know what to do then. What I see through the df command is that the block device /dev/sda1 is mounted onto the directory /media/usbdisk, which is the standard way for connecting disk devices. hubackup cannot store its .dar file in the directory /media/usbdisk ? info: in the meantime I used the cpbk utility, which is more powerful than cp (that is why you see the 2,3G occupied space on my key now - see above). but I would like to be able to use hubackup. I made an EXT2 filesystem on the key (filesystem is /dev/sda) When I plug the key, its filesystem is automatically mounted (nautilus opens and I see the lost+found directory). Then I launch HUB (through System menu): it probes for available devices and finds my key: Name = USB KEY 28X, Free = 3GB, Capacity = N/A. I click on the line representing the key in the Save backup to area, then the button Start and I get the following error message: Error mounting media. Make sure the media is not blank and retry. I don't understand why it wants a non-blank media... Good news: the upgrade completed successfully! Tell me if you need the dist-upgrade*.log files. To get back connected again to internet however, I need to debug my cxacru.c (driver for Conexant chips ADSL modem) or other files and re- compile (my usb ADSL modem is not recognized anymore since the kernel has changed...). So I need to do a little more work here ... but anyway now I am under Dapper, which is what I wanted. hello, I want let you know that I decided to install the 159 updates for Ubuntu 5.10. There was about 163Mbytes od data. May be this will help for preparing for upgrading to Ubuntu 6.06 (and maybe the upgrade will be shorter?) The sources.list I used is the one you can see in my previous post (I did not change anything before doing the updates). Maybe now I can just try to upgrade to 6.06 via update-manager? [Bug 55950] On-line upgrade from breezy to dapper aborted
Public bug reported: Hello, My current Ubuntu version is Breezy 5.10. I want to upgrade to Dapper 6.06, via Internet. (info: I bought a valid CD of Ubuntu 6.06, but the manual install via hacking of the sources.list seems wanting to remove a majority of my software; e.g. evolution, firefox, etc ..., so I don't feel comfortable to proceed in such circumstances; I want to do Internet upgrade). So I launched the update-manager (I made sure to get the last version before starting, i.e. 0.42.2ubuntu12~breezy2). When launched, the update-manager analyses my system and says that it is up-to-date and that a New distribution release 6.06 LTS is available. I pressed the Update button and the update started: it completed successfully the 2 first steps, but aborted at the third step and displayed the following window: Title: none Sign: red circle with white horizontal bar Message title: Could not calculate the upgrade Message content: A unresolvable problem occured while calculating the upgrade. Please report this as a bug. I have a screen capture if you want.
