[Bug 1214148] Re: [Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03] Intel video: Display backlight cannot be changed
Thanks Carlos Reig! Either I didn't see that last time I visited the Debugging page, or it has been added recently. Anyway, the solution in comment #25 worked for me. So... it looks like something like this needs to get into Ubuntu by default for this laptop. I have no idea how that would be accomplished, but that is indeed the solution. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1214148 Title: [Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03] Intel video: Display backlight cannot be changed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1214148/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1214180] Re: [Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03] will not suspend again after suspend/resume
I am happy to report that in Ubuntu 13.10, running kernel 3.11.0-15-generic, this issue has gone away, presumably because the changes in the upstream kernel I had been using for a while got into the Ubuntu kernel that is currently installed. I had been running an unsupported kernel for a while and hadn't tested, but today I booted into 3.11.0-15-generic and it seems to be fine at least as far as this issue goes. Thanks! [Bug 1214148] Re: [Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03] Intel video: Display backlight cannot be changed
I was testing some other issues today and tested this one as well. I am currrently running Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy with kernel 3.11.0-15-generic I can confirm that this problem still exists: - The fn F6/F7 hot keys for brightness show the light bulb and slider but have no effect on screen brightness - As root, I can echo numbers into /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness to change the screen brightness up and down So it appears the disconnect is between the hotkeys and that file. When I use the hotkeys, that file does not change. [Bug 1257817] [NEW] [Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03] cannot boot Ubuntu ISO image off USB stick
Public bug reported: Somehow (and I cannot remember what was involved), after purchasing this laptop [Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03] in June of 2013, I was able to install Ubuntu from a USB drive, and have set up a dual-boot system with Windows 8 and Ubuntu. However, in testing of another bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1214180 I have been asked a couple of times to download an Ubunto development ISO image, boot into it, and see if the suspend-resume problem described there has been fixed. This machine does not have a CD/DVD drive, so I made a USB stick, but I was unable to boot off the USB in August and again recently in December of this year, and I was asked in that bug to report the booting problem separately using the terminal ubuntu-bug linux command, so here I am. Here are the details of my latest attempt: a) I downloaded the ISO from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily- live/current/ labeled trusty-desktop-amd64.iso 03-Dec-2013 07:49 884M Desktop image for 64-bit PC (AMD64) computers (standard download) and used the Startup Disk Creator utility on my desktop machine (which is running the 12.0-4 LTS version of Ubuntu currently) to create a startup USB stick from it. This is almost certainly the same Startup Disk Creator utility I used when I originally set up my computer in June, but it is probably a different USB stick. b) Following the instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI (because I do have UEFI on this computer), I also verified that I have Secure Boot disabled in the BIOS (that was already the case) and that RapidStart Technology is disabled (that was also already the case). And I set the BIOS to boot off USB first. I am booting in UEFI mode. c) I then attempted to boot my Toshiba Portege laptop off that USB stick. I have USB as first in boot order (and I also tried by hitting F12 during bootup and manually selecting to boot off the USB stick) (and I tried all 3 USB ports on the computer, just in case they behaved differently, because I think one is USB-3 and the other two are USB-2). In all cases, I got an error message that was too quick to see, and then ended up at my normal hard disk (well, SSD disk) boot menu, where I could boot normally (not off the USB in other words). d) By filming the bootup sequence with my digital camera, I was able to freeze the frame where the error message appeared and read it. I attached a screen shot in that other issue, and I think the message says (I'm not entirely sure about the first line, as it was a bit blurry): Could not get fio for li-DevIceHandle: 2 Failed to find fs Failed to load image Failed to find fs Failed to load image Press any key to continue... I will also attach the screen shot here. e) I was able to use the USB stick to boot my desktop machine. It does not use UEFI, but at least I was able to confirm that the USB stick is bootable and works as a Live version of Ubuntu. OK, I downloaded the ISO from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily- live/current/ labeled trusty-desktop-amd64.iso 03-Dec-2013 07:49 884M Desktop image for 64-bit PC (AMD64) computers (standard download) and used the Startup Disk Creator utility on my desktop machine (which is running the LTS version of Ubuntu currently) to create a startup USB stick from it. I then attempted to boot my Toshiba Portege laptop off that USB stick. The same thing happened as in #5 though -- I hit f12 when booting, and it looked like it was going to boot off the USB, but then I got a message that flashed to the screen too fast to read, after which I was at the main Grub menu and it booted off the hard disk after a few seconds. So I am unable to test the latest daily ISO build. Sorry. If you have any suggestions for how to make my laptop boot off the USB, please let me know. As I said earlier, if you have just a kernel that I can try to install to see if I can boot off that, I'd be happy to test that. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1214180 Title: [Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03] will not suspend again after suspend/resume To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1214180/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1214180] Re: Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03 will not suspend again after suspend/resume
I downloaded the AMD 64 ISO image from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily- live/current/ and used the Startup Disk Creator utility to make a bootalbe USB stick. Then I hit F12 on bootup, went into setup, and made sure the USB stick was first in the bootup order. Then I tried several times to boot off the USB. However, even though when I hit F12 to see the USB stick its identifier is there in the list, my system is not booting off the USB stick. I keep getting through to the regular hard disk Grub menu instead. There is some error message flashing on the screen but it is too fast to read. I also tried re-making the USB drive, this time making sure to erase the disk first. Following the instructions on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI (because I do have UEFI on this computer), I also verified that I have Secure Boot disabled in the BIOS (that was already the case) and that RapidStart Technology is disabled (that was also already the case). So, I am not sure how to proceed with testing the latest mainline image. Obviously, I don't want to reinstall the O/S on my computer. And it does not have a CD/DVD rom drive, so I cannot try booting from that. HOWEVER, I was able to boot from the mainstream kernel labeled v3.11-rc6-saucy from the URL suggested above (AMD-64 version). I was also going to try the 3.9 RC8 Raring kernel, but the .deb file I downloaded (twice, just to be sure) would not install with dpkg -i (message said ... is not a debian format archive). The specific kernel I booted from says 3.22.0-031100rc6-generic. And, when I booted from this kernel, I was able to suspend repeatedly. So I would say this is fixed upstream. I will try mark this bug accordingly after saving this comment. (not sure if I can do both at the same time and I don't want to lose the comment) If bisecting to figure out which kernel it is first fixed in would help, let me know and I would be happy to do so. ** Tags removed: needs-upstream-testing ** Tags added: kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc6 ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1214180 Title: Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03 will not suspend again after suspend/resume To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1214180/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1214148] [NEW] Intel video: Display backlight cannot be changed on Toshiba Portege Z935
Public bug reported: On my Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03 laptop, the display hotkeys and display brightness settings do not work at all. Symptoms: 1. When I use Fn F6 or Fn F7, I get a pop-up window that shows a light bulb and a slider, and the slider goes obediently up and down as I press F6/7. However, the brightness of the screen does not change as the slider indicator changes. 2. If I go into the Power Manager and set the display brightness to dim after a few seconds has passed, it doesn't dim. So it seems to me that the hotkeys are being recognized as a method to change the display brightness, but that the operating system is unable to change the hardware's actual screen brightness... I don't think it's a hotkey problem per se. I read through https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight and I think I have the problem defined as: Backlight control does not work, but there are entries in /sys/class/backlight. Although I do not seem to have the Brightness applet on my system (I am running XFCE, so maybe that is why), but the Power Manager's brightness control is definitely not working. This is a recent install of Ubuntu, on a newly purchased laptop, so I have no idea whether it was working in previous versions of Ubuntu, kernels, etc. Sorry. I used the ubuntu-bug utility to report this bug, so I am not sure what else you need... but I am starting by attaching the Xorg log, and will attach the lspci output and other information shortly. I am also going to follow the rest of the debugging steps on the Backlight debugging page and attach the output as separate comments on this report. $ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 13.04 Release:13.04 $apt-cache policy xorg xorg: Installed: 1:7.7+1ubuntu4 Candidate: 1:7.7+1ubuntu4 Version table: *** 1:7.7+1ubuntu4 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ raring/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 13.04 Package: xorg 1:7.7+1ubuntu4 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.8.0-27.40-generic 3.8.13.4 Uname: Linux 3.8.0-27-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.9.2-0ubuntu8.1 Architecture: amd64 Date: Mon Aug 19 14:01:34 2013 InstallationDate: Installed on 2013-06-17 (62 days ago) InstallationMedia: Xubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail - Release amd64 (20130423.1) MarkForUpload: True ProcEnviron: TERM=xterm PATH=(custom, no user) XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=set LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: xorg Symptom: display UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug backlight raring ** Attachment added: Xorg.0.log https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1214148/+attachment/3778466/+files/Xorg.0.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1214148 Title: Intel video: Display backlight cannot be changed on Toshiba Portege Z935 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1214148/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1214148] Re: Intel video: Display backlight cannot be changed on Toshiba Portege Z935
I am now following the steps on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight The first step was to reboot with default Linux parameters. I had been using acpi-backlight=vendor. When I took that out and rebooted, the symptoms changed: the hotkeys no longer make the slider on the pop-up brightness widget go up and down. And they still also don't change the screen brightness. Anyway, I'll be attaching the files requested on that page for debugging. 1. ls /sys/class/backlight backlight ** Attachment added: backlight https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1214148/+attachment/3778478/+files/backlight -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1214148 Title: Intel video: Display backlight cannot be changed on Toshiba Portege Z935 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1214148/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1214180] [NEW] Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03 will not suspend again after suspend/resume
Public bug reported: After suspending my Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03 laptop once and resuming, I am unable to suspend the second time. When I attempt a second suspend, the suspend does not complete. I have tried to suspend via right-clicking on the Power Manager applet, and I also tried (as suggested at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/SuspendResumeTesting): sudo apt-get install checkbox sudo bash /usr/share/checkbox/scripts/suspend_test --full When running that script, the first time the computer suspended and resumed itself, but the second time, the suspend didn't succeed. I eventually hit the power off button and held it down until the computer shut down, then rebooted. I got a crash report and attempted to report an issue, but it didn't (as far as I can tell) actually send the data anywhere, although I clicked Continue, so I am instead trying this route. I used the ubuntu-bug linux command to report this issue, so I am assuming you will have some information... I will also attach the results of lspci -vnvn Further notes: - This is a pretty new laptop so I have not previously installed a different working version of Ubuntu, so I cannot tell you when it stopped working or if it was ever working before, sorry! - I will also try some steps from some of the kernel debugging pages and report back here. - $ cat /proc/version_signature Ubuntu 3.8.0-27.40-generic 3.8.13.4 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 13.04 Package: linux-image-3.8.0-27-generic 3.8.0-27.40 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.8.0-27.40-generic 3.8.13.4 Uname: Linux 3.8.0-27-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.9.2-0ubuntu8.1 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USERPID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC0: jhodgdon 2187 F pulseaudio Date: Mon Aug 19 16:08:14 2013 HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=83309235-54d3-42b7-92d8-7fac594f6e68 InstallationDate: Installed on 2013-06-17 (63 days ago) InstallationMedia: Xubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail - Release amd64 (20130423.1) MachineType: TOSHIBA PORTEGE Z935 MarkForUpload: True ProcEnviron: TERM=xterm PATH=(custom, no user) XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=set LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcFB: 0 inteldrmfb ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-3.8.0-27-generic root=UUID=cc61d39a-8b97-457b-88b2-710d49656f9f ro acpi_backlight=vendor RelatedPackageVersions: linux-restricted-modules-3.8.0-27-generic N/A linux-backports-modules-3.8.0-27-generic N/A linux-firmware1.106 SourcePackage: linux UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) dmi.bios.date: 04/04/2013 dmi.bios.vendor: TOSHIBA dmi.bios.version: Version 6.70 dmi.board.asset.tag: 00 dmi.board.name: PORTEGE Z935 dmi.board.vendor: TOSHIBA dmi.board.version: Version A0 dmi.chassis.asset.tag: 00 dmi.chassis.type: 10 dmi.chassis.vendor: TOSHIBA dmi.chassis.version: Version 1.0 dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnTOSHIBA:bvrVersion6.70:bd04/04/2013:svnTOSHIBA:pnPORTEGEZ935:pvrPT234U-07101X:rvnTOSHIBA:rnPORTEGEZ935:rvrVersionA0:cvnTOSHIBA:ct10:cvrVersion1.0: dmi.product.name: PORTEGE Z935 dmi.product.version: PT234U-07101X dmi.sys.vendor: TOSHIBA ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug raring suspend ** Attachment added: lspci-vnvn.log https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1214180/+attachment/3778552/+files/lspci-vnvn.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1214180 Title: Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03 will not suspend again after suspend/resume To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1214180/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1214180] Re: Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03 will not suspend again after suspend/resume
I would just like to add that I followed the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume in the section Suspending from text mode. Meaning that I booted with no_console_suspend, went into VT1, and did sudo pm-suspend. The laptop suspended and resumed with no trouble. Then I did it again, and just like suspending from the power manager, it didn't successfully suspend. I had to hold down the power key to power down, and then turn the computer back on to reboot. I am unsure what else to try, so I'll wait patiently for input. I went to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend but that seems to be instructions for debugging the *resume*. I am having trouble getting it to suspend, so I wasn't sure if that would be useful. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1214180 Title: Toshiba Portege Z935-ST4N03 will not suspend again after suspend/resume To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1214180/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1054407] Re: xfhelp4 is not installed
I got the message today xfhelp4 is not installed when clicking on the Help button for the Mail Watcher xfce task bar plugin app, for a newly- installed copy of Xubuntu, after adding the Mail Watcher to my task bar. Then I tried apt-get install xfce4-utils. However, this didn't work. The response said: Package xfce4-utils is not available, but is referred to by another package. [...] However, the following packages replace it: xfce4-session:i386 xfce4-appfinder:i386 libxfce4ui-utils:i386 xfcd4-session xfce4-appfinder libxfce4ui-utils It appears that this is actually an upstream XFCE bug: They've gotten rid of xfhelp4, and some of the panel apps are still referencing it. In support of this conclusion, I found two related bugs on their bugzilla (neither of which was for Mail Watcher, though one is for Screen Shooter, which is the panel app that was reported above): https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8847 [screen shooter app] https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8846 [power manager app] I hesitate to report the Mail Watcher to XFCE because I'm not sure if Xubuntu is running the latest version. [Bug 1191887] [NEW] Xubuntu download page has misleading 32/64 bit information
Public bug reported: When I go to the regular Ubuntu download page http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop it tells me that I need to get the 64-bit download if I am using UEFI firmware, and suggests 64-bit for newer machines. This is good information. However, when I go to the Xubuntu download page http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/ it tells me I should usually get the 32-bit download, which is really not correct. And then if I click through to a mirror site, such as the U.S. site: http://mirror.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu-iso/CDs-Xubuntu/13.04/release/ that page tells me I should download the 32-bit image unless I have an AMD 64-bit processor, which is definitely not correct. I have an Intel 64-bit processor, not an AMD, so it made me think I should download the 32-bit image. But this is incorrect -- I need the 64-bit image. So... I am filing this report to suggest that the Xubuntu download documentation be changed so that it: (a) suggests 64-bit for newer machines instead of implying it is only for AMD 64-bit processors (b) tells you that you need the 64-bit download if you are using UEFI. I hope that I've filed this in the right place... I'm a major contributor to the Drupal open-source project, but am less familiar with the Ubuntu issue filing procedures. [Bug 875262] Re: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php5/20090626+lfs/sqlite.so'
@davewalker: Thanks for posting your workaround in #9 and clarification in #14. I started getting this message in my cron log emails after upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10 last week. [Bug 305339] Re: Intrepid regression: Suspend from Gnome menu fails to resume on Twinhead H12Y clone laptop
Thanks, that is very good to know. If I still have this problem when I upgrade to Jaunty (any day now), I'll try your solution. I've just been living without sleep. Incidentally, and I didn't apparently mention it above, with one of the later kernel updates in Intrepid or something else I or another update did, my ability to control-alt-f1 and then get back to Gnome with alt-f7 went away, and so I am unable to use my escape-to-terminal method of suspending. Sigh. I have just had to turn the computer completely off instead of suspending. Anyway, I haven't yet tried your additional module turn-off, eldragon, but I'll give it a try if Jaunty still has these suspend issues. -- Intrepid regression: Suspend from Gnome menu fails to resume on Twinhead H12Y clone laptop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/305339 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 305339] Re: Intrepid regression: Suspend from Gnome menu fails to resume on Twinhead H12Y clone laptop
One more correlary. There doesn't seem to be a hibernate option from the Gnome menu system any more. When I tried the /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh script from a terminal window within Gnome, the machine did not hibernate to the point of turning off. It partially turned off: the Gnome display went dark, and I was unable to recover my Gnome session (or any Gnome session), but the computer was still on. Eventually escaped to tt1 and did sudo halt, and then rebooted, since alt-f7 just got me back to the dark screen, not Gnome. I also tried sudo /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh from a TTY window. That worked fine - the machine hibernated, and woke up fine. So again, hibernate seems to have the same problem as sleep: it works OK if run from the /etc/acpi scripts from a TTY console window, but not if run from within Gnome.
I did some more playing around with this today. I'm now running the 2.6.27-11-generic kernel, and I have also tried 2.6.28 and 2.6.29-rc5 (the latter two compiled from kernel.org source). They all behave similarly, but the testing reported here was with the 2.6.27-11-generic kernel from Ubuntu. Some things I've noticed: a) The sleep.sh script is not working consistently for me lately, when run from a terminal window inside Gnome. I can suspend (the computer shuts down to its suspended state, and the blue LED blinks, so the hardware must think it's asleep). But it often doesn't resume past the blinking cursor (see description above). Sometimes it does boot up again, but I get a Gnome login prompt and I've lost my previous Gnome session, so that's not very good. b) Using the Suspend menu items in the Gnome GUI consistently fails to resume to a booted state at all, or sometimes I might get the blinking cursur. c) If I use control-alt-f1 to get to the tty1 console from Gnome, log in at the console prompt, and run sleep.sh from there, I can consistently sleep and resume. c) After sleep/resume from tty1 console, I can use alt-f7 and get back to my previous Gnome session (yeah!! It actually resumes! I have a work- around!). Usually the network is not properly connected, but after taking care of that, I can work as normal. (This is what I normally do when I first boot up the computer after a shutdown, so it is not a surprise -- I use a custom network config.) So it seems as though the problem has to do with suspending from Gnome, and resuming straight to Gnome. Does that tell anyone anything? [Bug 305339] [NEW] Intrepid regression: Suspend fails to resume on Twinhead H12Y clone laptop
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: acpi-support I have an Everex StepNote 2053 T laptop (see below **) that doesn't resume after a suspend in Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid; worked fine in Hardy. More details: I recently updated from Hardy to Intrepid, using the Update functionality of the GUI-based package manager. I've since updated to the latest package releases, and am running the 2.6.27-9-generic kernel at the moment (will attach more detailed system info). I have the SDHCI and SDHCI-PCI modules blacklisted (see Bug #187671), but other than that it's a fairly standard Intrepid install. I'm apparently running version 0.114 of the acpi-support package. When I boot into this kernel, the earlier 2.6.27-7-generic kernel, or a 2.6.27.7 kernel I compiled form kernel.org source, and I suspend the laptop from the System / Shut Down menu item in Gnome, the laptop fails to resume. Booting into an old 2.6.26 kernel I compiled myself from kernel.org source, suspend/resume works. It also used to work fine in Hardy using kernels supplied by Ubuntu (which were conveniently erased when I upgraded to Intrepid) when I was still running Hardy. What I'm seeing with the current kernels, after I suspend and then hit the space bar to try to resume, is a blinking cursor in the upper-left of the otherwise black laptop screen. In fact, before I added this line to my startup sequence echo 3 /proc/sys/kernel/acpi_video_flags I couldn't even see the cursor -- the screen was just black (I added this line to startup because a friend with a different laptop was seeing a black screen and this fixed his problem, but it didn't fix my problem, just made the cursor visible). The fan and drives start up and make noise, but the laptop isn't usable. I've tried control-alt-f1 (and other f-keys) and control-alt-backspace, but they have no effect. I will attach lspci output and some other system output, and do some more debugging (I found debugging guides https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3066404)... will report these in separate comments, coming shortly, but I wanted to get the bug reported first. ** Here is a list of laptops which are apparently all clones of this one: * Averatec 2460 * Everex Stepnote SA2050 * Everex Stepnote SA2050T * Everex StepNote SA2052T * Everex StepNote SA2053T * Philips Freevents x52 * Philips Freevents x53 * Philips Freevents x54 * Philips Freevents x55 * Philips Freevents x56 * Twinhead H12Y ** Affects: acpi-support (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Intrepid regression: Suspend fails to resume on Twinhead H12Y clone laptop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/305339 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 305339] Re: Intrepid regression: Suspend fails to resume on Twinhead H12Y clone laptop
OK, this is interesting. I was playing around with some of the debugging suggestions on this page http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3066404 I found that after a reboot (to make sure I had reset the system to its normal state), If I went to a terminal window and typed sudo /etc/acpi/sleep.sh force everything worked fine. There were a few warnings on the screen (e.g. that /etc/network/run/ifstate file didn't exist, and a couple Function not supported lines, and on resume, module acpi_sbs not found), but everything resumed without any problems. So it appears that the problem is with the Gnome menu item suspend, rather than with the sleep.sh script. If I can figure out how, I will change the package this is reported against, but if I can't figure it out, can someone do that? I don't think the problem is with ACPI if sleep.sh works, is it? And it doesn't look like any of the debugging things will be all that useful, because all of them are debugging problems with sleep.sh and not with the Suspend menu item in Gnome. Anyway, I'm happy to run other tests, just add a comment and I'll see what I can do. -- Intrepid regression: Suspend from Gnome menu fails to resume on Twinhead H12Y clone laptop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/305339 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The link from the previous comment is from a support thread about a Thinkpad laptop. I have an Everex laptop, not a Thinkpad, but I did try their suggestions. The relevant items: a) use /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart This didn't work on my laptop. b) Mute the pcm volume and after that the master volume, the sound will shows up again (the order is not important) This didn't work on my laptop. c) Switch the sound system from Autotdetect to ALSA in the PreferencesSoundsDevices menu. My laptop was already set up that way, so this didn't help. d) Look at Bug #198218 One suggesion in there was ty try: sudo /sbin/alsa force-reload This did get sound running again. But it looks like it unloads and reloads all ALSA-related modules, which also would kill everything using sound. Fairly extreme, but it does work. [Bug 90271] Re: Regression: RealTek 8139 hard-locks system on installation/modprobe (affects Averatec, Philips laptops)
I just tried the Hardy beta disk, downloaded yesterday. I think the 8139too problem is resolved. However, the disk still doesn't boot as a live CD on these laptops, because of the SDHCI module (see numerous comments above). But I am pretty sure that 8139too got loaded successfully first. Not positive, but pretty sure. I tried putting sdhci.blacklist=yes on the boot line (when the CD comes up, F6 and remove quiet=yes and splash from the boot options, add sdhci.blacklist=yes, no quotes), but this doesn't prevent the SDHCI module from being loaded. Here's the web page that suggested this: http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch05s02.html Maybe this would work if booting normally (off the hard drive) but it doesn't seem to work with the live CD. Anyway, when Hardy comes out, at least those of us who managed to get previous versions of Ubuntu installed by using alternative install CDs can probably upgrade to Hardy and use the kernels provided by Ubuntu. -- Regression: RealTek 8139 hard-locks system on installation/modprobe (affects Averatec, Philips laptops) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/90271 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 90271] Re: Regression: RealTek 8139 hard-locks system on installation/modprobe (affects Averatec, Philips laptops)
I got an email message from someone who managed to get a standard Ubuntu distro to install, without a wired network card. He put his experience in the Ubuntu forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=704260 Note that this person completely blacklisted the SDHCI module, so he has no wired network card working. There may also be a way to blacklist the problematic modules at boot time, which I'm looking into. But in general, there is not yet an easy way to install a standard distribution of Ubuntu on these laptops. Apparently the next Hardy will have the 8139too kernel module compiled in a way compatible to this laptop (that's what this bug is about), but the sdhci kernel module (Bug #187671) is still an issue. I'm working on resolving it with the kernel folks, but it isn't resolved yet. I'll post here if I figure anything else out... -- Regression: RealTek 8139 hard-locks system on installation/modprobe (affects Averatec, Philips laptops) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/90271 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 90271] Re: Regression: RealTek 8139 hard-locks system on installation/modprobe (affects Averatec, Philips laptops)
An update package that works off the Hardy Alpha already being installed is not going to help. Those of us with these laptops have not been able to install off standard Ubuntu distro disks, due to this bug and Bug #187671, which prevent those disks from even being booted. And even with this bug fixed, Bug #18671 is still going to prevent booting the Hardy Alpha distro disk. So we don't have Hardy Alpha installed. This meta update package wouldn't trigger an update from the Gutsy kernels to this new kernel, I think? Which is why I was wondering if it's possible to grab a package, via apt-get or FTP or whatever (I can handle doing dpkg to install the package if I can get the package), that just has the new kernel in it. I have a Gutsy installation with SDHCI blacklisted, so I can test booting the new kernel without Bug #18671 interfering, and without installing the entire Hardy Alpha distro. -- Regression: RealTek 8139 hard-locks system on installation/modprobe (affects Averatec, Philips laptops) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/90271 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I'm certain the next Hardy Alpha distro disk won't boot, even with this bug fixed (due to Bug #187671, SDHCI module, as mentioned above) -- but I have the SDHCI module blacklisted on my laptop, so I could at least try booting the new kernel, without the rest of the disk, to verify that the 8139too bug is actually fixed, if that would be useful. I was going to try this, actually, but I didn't know where to find the kernel package (I tried apt-get, but either I had the package name wrong, or I need to put in a different location, or something like that -- excuse my ignorance of dev locations!). [Bug 187671] [NEW] sdhci module hangs Everex StepNote 2053T
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22 On an Everex StepNote 2053T laptop, loading the sdhci module causes the machine to hang completely. SysRq keys don't work, and the only way to reboot is to hold the power switch down. This is a major problem, because the install disk and/or live CD tries to load the module, so you can't install off a standard Ubuntu disk. The only way to boot up is to blacklist this kernel, or buld a kernel without the sdhci module. This affects kernels 2.6.20 through 2.6.24; I haven't tested earlier ones. I've found this problem on Ubuntu kernels from Feisty, Gutsy, and Hoary Alpha 3 distributions, as well as straight kernel.org kernels that I built from source (2.6.20, 2.6.22, 2.6.23, and 2.6.24 releases; didn't technically test 2.6.21 but I imagine it's the same). There are no obvious compile options for this module either, and no bootup options. The card reader on this laptop is apparently an O2 Micro MMC, SD, Memory Stick. Here's the lspci output that seems relevant: 03:06.2 Generic system peripheral [0805]: O2 Micro, Inc. [Bug 187671] Re: sdhci module hangs Everex StepNote 2053T
I have already tested this problem on the 2.6.24 kernel.org kernel. Do you think Hardy Alpha 4 is worth testing on -- are there changes beyond what were in the kernel.org source for 2.6.24 (released last week)? I did try to test this on Hardy Alpha 3, by the way, but it didn't boot past the 8139too MMIO problem (Bug #90271) on this laptop, so I actually have not verified that sdhci will or will not load in Alpha 3. But unless the 8139too problem is fixed in Alpha 4, there is no way I'll be able to test it in Alpha 4 either. However, I have independently of Ubuntu released kernels, created my own kernel.org kernel with the PIO option for the 8139too module. And through 2.6.24, loading the sdhci module does still hang the system. -- sdhci module hangs Everex StepNote 2053T https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/187671 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 187671] Re: sdhci module hangs Everex StepNote 2053T
We reported this, and the 8139too problem, to the kernel folks, via the kernel mailing list back when I first got the laptop. There has not been even a reply to that submission. It was months ago, back when 2.6.20 was still current. We were under the impression that most of the kernel people don't really use their bugzilla, and instead that most of them just use the kernel mailing list archive to track bugs, which is why it went to the list and not to bugzilla. Anyway, if you want to put it in Bugzilla there, be my guest, but I don't think I have much pull with the kernel people. [Bug 90271] Re: Regression: RealTek 8139 hard-locks system on installation/modprobe (affects Averatec, Philips laptops)
I don't agree that Bug #34902 is a duplicate. It is talking about locking of the system due to a totally different card and driver. The card/driver on this bug is an 8139 ethernet card (wired network, not wireless); the card in question for the other bug is a Ralink RT2500 wireless card. It is true that the Ralink RT73 wireless card on my Everex StepNote SA2053 has some issues with Ubuntu, but not the ones described in Bug #34902.The rausb drivers that came with Feisty and Gutsy did not work, and even with working drivers, the wireless card did not work with the Network manager application, but I never saw the laptop hang due to the wireless issues. Also, commenters on the other bug reported they couldn't get their machines to work even using the Serial Monkey drivers, but this laptop's wireless works just fine with the Serial Monkey drivers, with some scripts and the Serial Monkey wireless manager application (RutilT) in place of the network manager. The people who reported #34902 and commented on it were having much more serious wireless problems than people with a StepNote laptop (and other similar ones), and not the same problems reported here, from what I can tell. --Jennifer -- Regression: RealTek 8139 hard-locks system on installation/modprobe (affects Averatec, Philips laptops) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/90271 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 90271] Re: Regression: RealTek 8139 hard-locks system on installation/modprobe (affects Averatec, Philips laptops)
The kernel.org folks released 2.6.24 today (or at least recently). So, I did some testing with this kernel on my Everex StepNote SA2053T (not an Averatec - that was a typo in the previous comment I left earlier today). Results: 1) The sdhci problem still occurs (modprobe -r sdhci causes the system to hang completely; only way out is to hold down the power switch and force a reboot). I have sdhci blacklisted so that I can boot, but standard Ubuntu live CDs probably do try to load it (at least they used to as of Feisty Faun). I don't think there is a way to tell the boot loader to avoid loading that module, is there? 2) The 8139too module works fine on my Everex StepNote laptop if compiled with CONFIG_8139TOO_PIO=y -- I have this in my config file by default. When I changed my config file to using the (I think default?) MMIO setting instead of PIO, the 8139 module hung the boot process (hard reboot necessary). So, I don't think anything has changed, in relation to this bug, between the 2.6.20 and 2.6.24 kernels from kernel.org. --Jennifer -- Regression: RealTek 8139 hard-locks system on installation/modprobe (affects Averatec, Philips laptops) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/90271 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 90271] Re: Regression: RealTek 8139 hard-locks system on installation/modprobe (affects Averatec, Philips laptops)
I had the same result as Mike just reported on my Averatek StepNote SA2053T with the Hardy Heron alpha 3 desktop live CD: boot hangs and the only recourse is a hard reboot (power switch). The last lines look just slightly different from the last 2 lines of what Mike reported: the 8139 module is still a problem. So, I have compiled kernels from kernel.org source from 2.6.20 up through 2.6.23, and there are two modules with problems: 1) 8139too -- if it is compiled with CONFIG_8139TOO_PIO=y it works, but the default uses MMIO instead. Loading the module with MMIO compiling causes the laptop to hang completely - hard reboot necessary - SysRq keys do not work - last reported lines similar to the last 2 of what Mike reported in the last comment. 2) sdhci - this laptop has a card reader, but loading the SDHCI module causes it to hang completely (hard power-switch reboot necessary, SysRq doesn't work). I haven't found any compile options that can prevent that, and even tried putting some debugging into the kernel source, but couldn't figure out what was going wrong. I haven't tried building with the Hardy Heron or other Ubuntu kernel source (my partner uses other distros, so I got set up with git and the kernel.org source), but if it is based on 2.6.23 or earlier, those are the config options. (I have tried loading the Ubuntu kernels from Feisty and Gutsy; same results as the default-compiled kernel.org kernels.) If Hardy is based on a later kernel.org source, add a comment here and I can test that with the kernel.org source. We did report this issue to the kernel folks, but they have not seen fit to do anything about it... nice to see that the Ubuntu folks are interested. :) --Jennifer -- Regression: RealTek 8139 hard-locks system on installation/modprobe (affects Averatec, Philips laptops) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/90271 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: I recently upgraded to Gutsy. After this upgrade, when I run the Update Manager, I get a greyed-out box for the phpmyadmin package. [Bug 156764] 2.6.22-14-generic kernel distributed with Gutsy does not boot on Everex StepNote SA2053T laptop
Public bug reported: I have an Everex StepNote SA2053T laptop. It will not boot with any 2.6.20 through 2.6.23 kernels (technically I have not tested 2.6.21). When the boot hangs, it is really stuck, and you can't even use SysRq keys. This is not actually an Ubuntu-specific problem but a kernel problem -- it's the same with other distributions (and we've tried a lot of them). We were able to make a kernel that would boot using the following steps: 1) In the build Configure menu, set up the 8139too module so it uses only PIO access, and disable MMIO access (CONFIG_8139TOO_PIO=y). 2) Prevent the sdhci module from loading (either remove CONFIG_MMC_SDHCI from the kernel config, or use the Ubuntu blacklist to prevent the module from loading). No compile options or load options we have found have yet allowed this module to load without hanging the system. Without these two steps, no 2.6.20, 2.6.22, or 2.6.23 kernel I have tried, including those distributed with Feisty and Gutsy, will boot. Also, after booting with SDHCI in the blacklist, using modprobe sdhci will hang the system (to the point of needing a hard reboot). I did get Feisty initially installed by downloading an ISO someone else had made with these two steps performed. Since then, I have just built my own kernels.
