[Bug 869017] Re: Ubuntu server enables screenblanking, concealing crashdumps (DPMS is not used)
So this "fix" seems to cause Kernels released with zesty (and newer) keep the monitor always ON. No blanking, and no power down either. Before this fix, a clean install of Ubuntu server would signal the monitor to sleep/standby after a short while. Now the default behavior is to leave the monitor always on, wasting power. While blanking itself should be negligible to power savings and monitor longevity, sleep states are still an important feature. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1767568 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/869017 Title: Ubuntu server enables screenblanking, concealing crashdumps (DPMS is not used) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kbd/+bug/869017/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1767568] Re: Console DPMS Nonfunctional in Ubuntu Server 18.04
Summary of my tests WORKS: * Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS (xenial), clean install and after updates as well * Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak), clean install and after updates as well FAILS: (no DPMS) * Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS (xenial), with HWE kernel * Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus) I tried some APT pinning to test kernel combinations: WORKS: * Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus), with kernel from 16.10 using apt pinning. FAILS: * Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak), with kernel from 17.04 using apt pinning. So I'm convinced it's something in the kernel package. [Bug 1767568] Re: Console DPMS Nonfunctional in Ubuntu Server 18.04
Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS + HWE doesn't seem to do the DPMS I'm testing it again, because I have to wait a lot between tests to be 100% sure. I don't know the exact time for it to trigger, so I don't sit there waiting. I just reboot, go do something else, and check back after a while. I won't report back on this configuration unless the results are different. Next test should be 16.10. So far the issue seems kernel related? Maybe default build options? And /etc/kbd/config seems to be for something else. The time configured there was 30 mins, I changed it to 1 minute and didn't get the results I expected. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1767568 Title: Console DPMS Nonfunctional in Ubuntu Server 18.04 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1767568/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1767568] Re: Console DPMS Nonfunctional in Ubuntu Server 18.04
my First test: Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS, with all the updates no HWE, might try that later. So far it works fine. Some time after boot the monitor went to standby. At one point, after using the arrow key to wake it up. It blanked but didn't go into standby, so the monitor was on but full black. I wonder if it was because the login prompt had some input? I could wake it up and login normally. Then I logged out and waited, and it went to standby like it was supposed to. I quite haven't figured out what happened then I have noticed that the /etc/kbd/config is present on 16.04, I believe it was missing on 18.04. I'm still digging further.
The problem seems present in 19.04. My monitor stays ON, exactly as described in this bug. And not much work seems to have been done on this bug? Is the rc.local fix good enough for blanking, or actual monitor stand by? Moe importantly, could we find exactly on what file or package 16.04 differs from 18.04 so we can revert, or improve the change properly. I guess we might need to fine grain those change increments, to find which is the first Ubuntu version where this took place. 16.04 vs 16.10 vs 17.04 vs 17.10 vs 18.04 Does installing with live-server vs alternate have any effect on this? Some of these questions are answered easily, and I guess I can start trying clean installs of various Ubuntu servers. too see which is the first to break. [Bug 1489855] Re: Change to mount sequence order breaks persistence on casper-rw partitions
I've been tracking this bug for a few years now. For a bug of such HEAT shouldn't it by now at least have an importance other than UNDECIDED? And shouldn't the bug have enough information to be TRIAGED instead of CONFIRMED. It just seems this bug is not moving forward and just going to sit in it's current state forever. For every new Ubuntu release, I'm afraid to invest more time trying to get persistence to work, because I've already dedicated much time to this subject in the past, and have personally failed. Instead I come back to his bug to check the status before even trying. So I'm not sure of the status of the bug for current releases of Ubuntu. I'm creating these USB sticks from Windows. There are some workaround posted here, like Pankaj's. But those steps require that you already be booted on Ubuntu to begin with. So that would at least require creating 2 USB sticks if you are starting from Windows. And like I said, I don't want to invest more time and resources on the subject than I have already. Would be nice if the Windows tools were updated with his observations and created an alternate persistence structure. [Bug 1489855] Re: kubuntu 15.10 beta1 live usb drops to busybox with persistence PARTITION
Did you ever resolve this? I think I have the same issue with the final release of Ubuntu 15.10 ece816e12f97018fa3d4974b5fd27337 *ubuntu-15.10-desktop-amd64.iso Here's what I've done so far, I've combined concepts of different guides. I'm starting from a Windows 10 environment. 1) I used diskpart on the windows command line to wipe the partition table off the usb drive, As window's "Disk Management" can be restrictive (next step). Any good partition tool would do. 2) Created a 1.2 GB fat32 partition, 4096 cluster size. The rest of the usb is left unpartitioned. I determined the size by trial and error, originally I used a guide that suggest installing on the whole usb and resizing/shrinking, I found this to be easier. 3) Used the tool at pendrive linux. Added about 70mb of persistence. Until this point everything works as expected. It Boots to the live environment, it has persistence and I'm using only a portion of the USB. 4) I created two ext4 partitions. My USB drive is 16GB, and wanted to have more control of what would be in and out of casper-rw So the first one is labeled "casper-rw" and the second one is labeled "data". At this point I can reboot, and everything is just like before, the system will continue to use the casper FILE, and not take advantage of the PARTITION. Both partitions are automatically mounted on /media/ubuntu It's when I delete the casper-rw file that the problem happens. After a few failed attempts, I decided to move it out instead. I'm using windows for this, and it sits on my desktop while I test. I can then revert successfully. Summary: When I boot without the casper-rw FILE, I get a busybox, even though I have the casper-rw PARTITION created. I expect it to automatically revert to using the partition. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1489855 Title: kubuntu 15.10 beta1 live usb drops to busybox with persistence PARTITION To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/casper/+bug/1489855/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 330824] Re: Soft lockups (freezes) when deleting files from ext4 partitions on 2.6.28
I've also been using the Karmic kernels on Jaunty (and the new nvidia drivers) as suggested by martinm1000. Unfortunately, it seems to require also updating the graphics drivers, in my case nvidia. I've applied this temporary fix a while back, seeing this is taking too long to fix. I also vote for a backport as a temporary fix, instead of having inexperienced users jump through hoops. Most of the solutions posted so far seem to mess with your 3d acceleration, either requiring an update to the video drivers or manual installation. Another reason why i think a backport would be preferred. I understand package policy would make it difficult for kernel 2.6.29 or newer to make it into jaunty. But isn't that what jaunty-backports is for? Using mainline kernels or getting karmic packages is not exactly a 1 click installation, and in fact could break your system. A backport on the other hand can be enabled using the GUI. And could provide an easier fix for those who need it. The solution i adopted is very similar to having a backport: 1) Add a pin, by editing /etc/apt/preferences Package: * Pin: release a=karmic Pin-Priority: 50 2) Append karmic to your sources.list: deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ karmic main restricted 3) Update your repositories. sudo apt-get update 4) Use apt or synaptic to get the packages you want. linux-image-2.6.31-3-generic linux-headers-2.6.31-3-generic linux-headers-2.6.31-3 nvidia-glx-180 nvidia-kernel-common -- Soft lockups (freezes) when deleting files from ext4 partitions on 2.6.28 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/330824 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 214130] Re: flashplugin-nonfree mismatch
maybe the package could be set as to not be so strict with the MD5 checks? eg: a big WARNING and default answer to abort, instead of entirely breaking the install? [Bug 201277] [NEW] billard-gl may lock the spacebar
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: billard-gl While playing billard-gl the spacebar may lock forcing the user to shutdown using the external power button. I've manage to reproduce this 3 times, but I don't have the exact reproduction steps. All 3 instances where after a clean boot of the system. Seems this happens while playing the game using the spacebar (instead of middle mouse button), and using the mouse itself just to aim/look. Maybe going back to the main menu with the mouse while holding the spacebar will raise the chances of triggering the bug. After the bug is triggered seems the state of the spacebar is always down. I cant confirm if the state is purely inverted (down is released and up is pressed) or if using the spacebar again cycles once between the released and pressed state (leaving it pressed). Seems more like the latter. Closing the game would leave the system unusable as any menu option that is highlighted would trigger instantly and opening a terminal would result in spaces being typed continously. I can't switch the the console using Ctrl+Alt+F1 either. The problem seems purely software related as unplugging the keyboard does not fix the problem. ** Affects: billard-gl (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- billard-gl may lock the spacebar https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/201277 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 60940] Re: edgy live cd fails to boot on old machine
Desktop CDs (Live CDs) suggest a minimum of 192 MB of RAM. This may be the cause of the problem. It is possible edgy makes more use of the expected 192 MB of RAM, when compared to the dapper CDs. -- edgy live cd fails to boot on old machine https://launchpad.net/bugs/60940 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 60861] Re: Search button in Synaptic becomes unresponsive
I can confirm this. Not sure if is by design, or a design fault. Might be caused by a feature which tries to prevent opening multiple child windows. When trying to reproduce the bug. Alternativly, press ESC on step 4. Whatever button the mouse was resting on, will be inactive until the mouse leaves said button and goes back to it. Looks like the buttons wait for a onMouseOver event before being active for clicking. -- Search button in Synaptic becomes unresponsive https://launchpad.net/bugs/60861 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
