[Bug 1901894] Re: One or more monitors turns off but system usable until monitor orientation change

2020-12-23 Thread Julius Thor
Kai-Heng, yes the root was ZFS, but it's not anymore. I have reinstalled
using btrfs on root and the latest kernel (5.10). The lockups have
stopped occurring.

Installed the latest mainline kernel but the system doesn't boot.
Initramfs complaines that zfs module is not loaded. Still works for the
LTS kernels.

[Bug 1901894] [NEW] One or more monitors turns off but system usable until monitor orientation change

2020-10-28 Thread Julius Thor
Public bug reported:

I'm having random lockups, sort of.

When this happens, usually one monitor out of 3 (including laptop
display) will turn off (one of the external monitors) sometimes both
external monitors. Usually I can spawn new applications and the system
is usable but if I try to detect the displays again or if I undock, all
remaining screens go blank (normal) but don't return like usual. I'm
unable to change to a new virtual console so all I can do is reboot.
Sometimes I'm able to do a soft reboot (with power button), other times
I have to hold the power button to do a hard shutdown.

I'm not sure if it's related but I get this error in dmesg:

[Bug 1604313] Re: Ubuntu 16.04: system freezes instead of suspend after undocking

2017-05-05 Thread Julius Thor
This bug is still in 16.04.

I seem to be able to work around this issue by closing the display while
in the bug. Let the display orientation update so only the external
monitor(s) is turned on, then undock the computer and finally open the
display and close it again.

But undocking the computer with the display open and then trying to make
the computer sleep will always make it lockup so that the cursor is the
only thing that's responsive.

2016-12-28 Thread Julius Thor
I also notice that the display changes are not detected properly. When I
undock, there is no change in display orientation and I can still move
the mouse over to the other screen which is not there (missing limb,
still felt). When I run Displays ("unity-control-center display"), the
screen flickers and the displays get rearranged but are still detected
as if they are still connected.

Christofer, I'll create a new bug report as soon as I get clarification
regarding my previous question.

[Bug 1604313] Re: Ubuntu 16.04: system freezes instead of suspend after undocking

2016-12-25 Thread Julius Thor
I have the same laptop and am experiencing the same bug. I have tried
upgrading to 4.8.0-30-generic but that does not fix the problem for me.
I did try and turn off all monitors except the laptop monitor before
undocking and that allowed me to put the laptop to sleep. I could not
wake it up, though.

[Bug 999141] Re: Dual monitor DisplayPort stopped working.

2012-10-08 Thread Julius Thor
Just docked my laptop and woke it up from sleep and it detected the two
monitors.

This was either fixed in the latest kernel or after I disabled polling
in drm_kms_helper:

echo N /sys/module/drm_kms_helper/parameters/poll

I put it into /etc/rc.local to make it permanent.

Tried DisplayPort again today and this problem still persists. I did
make another test, however:

I can get DisplayPort working if I boot the computer docked and
DisplayPort plugged into the dock. If i then undock the computer and
redock, DisplayPort will not activate again and xrandr shows no
indication of a Monitor being connected to any of the DisplayPorts.

[Bug 999141] [NEW] Dual monitor DisplayPort stopped working.

2012-05-14 Thread Julius Thor
Public bug reported:

After I updated today using Update-Manager I can no longer use my
secondary monitor which is connected via DisplayPort. This was a problem
a few months ago and it seems to have creeped back into ubuntu? I used
to use VGA while this was a problem and I have reverted back to that
workaround. The image is considerably worse so I hope whatever broke the
DisplayPort code gets reverted back.

Note: The monitor was plugged in while I made this bug report.
xrandr.txt still says it's disconnected.

[Bug 954918] Re: Missing Server input box for Sametime accounts

2012-04-24 Thread Julius Thor
There is a workaround for this which can be used until this gets a
proper fix: You can specify username and server in the accound field
with a semycolon in between:

Account: username:serverhost

See screenshot in comment #5.

[Bug 954918] [NEW] Missing Server input box for Sametime accounts

2012-03-14 Thread Julius Thor
Public bug reported:

Hi,

It is no longer possible to connect to sametime server because there is
no Server input box undir Sametime accounts. This happened recently
and according to a freedesktop.org bug report this happened when
libpurple was upgraded from 2.10 to 2.10.1. Here is the explanation from
the freedesktop.org bug report:

With the latest version of libpurple (2.10.1) a change was made to the Sametime
protocol:

 + Sametime:
- Separate username and server when adding new Sametime
  accounts

Although at first this seems harmless and only affecting the pidgin client, it
seems that telepathy-haze can not handle this separation. When a new account is
created for Sametime, the server details are no longer displayed. Also an old
account (that has all the details already) no longer works due to the same
issue. Adding the missing parameter to the accounts.cfg file (mission-control)
causes that this parameter is ignored and removed.

Returning to libpurple 2.10.0 resolves the issue and the server can be
identified again when the account is created. - Raymond Wooninck

Re: [Bug 872209] Re: Cannot change display resolution or detect secondary display

2011-11-08 Thread Julius Thor
Hi,

It's sort of solved. After an update later on I was able to output to
a VGA so I can now use Dual head. I am not able to use DisplayPort,
however, but I do believe that a bug report has been made for that
issue.

I guess this one can be closed then.

Thanks!

 Hey joolli,

Hi, thanks for reporting this issue during the development period of
 Ubuntu.

I notice there's not been further comments to the bug report since the
release came out, would you mind updating us on the status of it in the
 release?

Are you still able to reproduce the issue?  If not, do you think the bug
report can be closed, or do you think we should continue tracking it?

@Simon Pfeifer

There is no fix for that and there never will be because that is
intended and is hardware coded (as in; not in the software/driver).
Imagine if you are playing music very loud and you quickly need to mute?
What are you going to do? Push the Mute button once? Probably not...
Most people would push it repeatedly. No? :)

@Forlong

We're not being snotty and it's the functionality of the T60 is not up
to the Ubuntu developers. It's Lenovo that made the T60 function as it
does (Mute button only mutes) and that's done in the hardware mixer.
However in the T61's case it's done in software and that's what Henrique
meant with the Yes, it was dumbed down. comment.

[Bug 573472] Re: 'hostap-utils' causes soft lockup when booting lucid

2010-08-03 Thread Julius Thor
It's because if you don't load orinoco_pci the hostap_pci wireless
driver gets loaded instead. Both drivers support the card and the kernel
doesn't know which one to load but orinoco_pci usually gets loaded for
some reason. The hostap_pci module has been broken for a long time but
the Ubuntu team doesn't seem to care at all.

[Bug 291760] Re: network-manager roams to (none) ((none)) - background scanning

2010-07-26 Thread Julius Thor
I can confirm that switching over to wicd worked around the problem. I
hope this will be fixed/worked around in NetworkManager as I prefer
NetworkManager over wicd (The UI).

I would like to see an option in NetworkManager to disable bgscan until
this gets fixed in the drivers affected.

I'm using ath5k on a AR5212 chip.

[Bug 461419] Re: [Karmic Lucid] Atheros AR5211 - ath5k driver connection and performance issues

2010-05-02 Thread Julius Thor
I have to ask; since the first bug was filed, has there only been one
card fixed? Am I the only one finding this absolutely pathetic?

Ok, this card that got fixed has seen quite an improvement (I know
because I have that card) but what about the other very common card
AR5211. That card has been completely broken for years. It barely
connects with ath_pci (and of course that driver causes kernel panics)
and has been removed from Ubuntu and ath5k doesn't connect at all even
with the computer next to the router. Both ath5k and ath_pci are so bad
that I even resorted to ndiswrapper, which performed better but caused
even more frequent lockups than ath_pci.

IBM Thinkpad T40-43 are very common laptops and the fact that AR5211
does not work is quite a bad situation as it's embedded in many of these
laptops. Laptops which many people use, after they have bought a new
one, to test Linux for the first time.

Can anyone answer why there seems to be no work done on that card? Is
Atheros not interested in fixing the driver for that card or what? It
would be nice to know because then I would know if I should throw that
piece of junk AR5211 away and buy an Intel card, or not.

Best regards
Julius
A recently happy owner of a T60 (AR5212)
but a long frustrated owner of a T40p (AR5211)

[Bug 461419] Re: [Karmic Lucid] Atheros AR5211 - ath5k driver connection and performance issues

2010-04-01 Thread Julius Thor
I just acquired an IBM Thinkpad T42p laptop and the ath5k driver is
unusable with the miniPCI I have installed in the system. It is actually
a Philips adapter from a T40p but that shouldn't matter. I'm on Lucid
Lynx beta and I tried all stages as described above.

I installed:
linux-backports-modules-wireless-lucid-generic

which installed this package:
linux-backports-modules-wireless-2.6.32-18-generic

ath5k did not connect after doing that so I tried installing bleeding edge
compat wireless.
This is the tarball I used:
compat-wireless-2010-03-28

lspci -vvnn:

Kernel driver in use: ath_pci
Kernel modules: ath_pci, ath5k

As you can see, I'm using ath_pci to be able to connect to the Internet.
Even with that driver the connectivity is rather bad (20-30% signal
strength at 11Mbps). It stops working randomly so I have to re-associate
to get connectivity back. Just on my right here is a T60 with this card:

Atheros Communications Inc. AR5212 802.11abg NIC [168c:1014] (rev 01)
 Subsystem: IBM Device [1014:057e]

Which is the same card as mentioned in the bug description.
The T60 has a stable connection with 55-70% signal strength at 48Mbps.

I hope that helps. I can provide apport information if you require it.

[Bug 461419] Re: [Karmic] Atheros AR5211 - ath5k driver connection and performance issues

2009-11-19 Thread Julius Thor
@Jarmo

Have you tried linux-backports-modules-karmic? I believe I have the same
Philips adapter(It's atleast a Philips adapter) on my T41p and it works pretty
well with ath5k. Same result with my T60 which had horrible connectivity using
ath5k until I installed the backport package.
Before I installed linux-backports-modules-karmic I used ath_pci on both
laptops.

I'm on Karmic and this seems to have been improved a lot over recent

downloading at 300-700KB/s in my university where I would only get
2-15KB/s a week or two ago.

[Bug 300693] Re: Thinkpad T61p hardlock flashing caps lock

2009-10-13 Thread Julius Thor
Ever since I started using ath5k I've stopped getting the lockups.
Everytime i started using the ath_pci I got lockups. I used ath_pci
because ath5k wouldn't even associate to APs in a noisy environment.
That is, where there were a lot of wireless networks around. Ath5k is
getting better though. I used to get lockups on ath5k but a lot less
frequent so maybe you could try a more recent version. The last couple
of months I did not get any lockups with ath5k and I haven't had any
lockups on Karmic either and the Karmic ath5k seems to keep a more
stable connection as well.

I'm on a IBM Thinkpad T60 with a ATI Radeon Mobility X1400 and Atheros
AR5212.

I use the open source driver for the ATI video controller.

[Bug 276508] Re: [intrepid] [Atheros AR5211] ath5k driver inoperative, wpa_supplicant never completes connection

2009-10-13 Thread Julius Thor
After an update the other day I tried connecting to the wireless in my
University and now I get association and it remains associated. However
I do get very slow connection. My top speed was about 40KB/s for a few
seconds. I would say average speed was around 0-20KB/s. Very choppy
connection but it's definitely a small improvement. :)

[Bug 276508] Re: [intrepid] [Atheros AR5211] ath5k driver inoperative, wpa_supplicant never completes connection

2009-10-11 Thread Julius Thor
Hi,

I've always had this problem with the ath5k driver. However I tried the
ath5k driver again about 2 months ago and had the exact same problem, so
I tried changing the channel on my AP to something that wasn't being
used by my neighbors and since then my connection has stayed relatively
stable.

It is relatively stable, however I do lose connection every 2-4 minutes
without losing association with the AP. I don't really notice it unless
I'm using streaming media. It's only like once or twice every 24 hours
that I lose association with the AP but it connects again in about 30
seconds. Before I changed the channel I would get association for a few
seconds before losing it again and most of the time it wouldn't
associate at all.

This only applies to my home connections which is encrypted with WPA-
PSK. Usually I can't connect at all while in my University. Sometimes I
get a connection but lose it after a few seconds. The University WiFi
network is unencrypted.

The ath_pci driver would stay connected without me changing the channel
at home and could also stay connected in the University. However it
caused kernel panics so I prefer ath5k when I'm able to use it. I would
say that it's a regression that there isn't an option to use ath_pci
karmic. I would use the ath5k at home and ath_pci when I was in Uni.

[Bug 369005] Re: juanty ath5k : disconnection / slow network

2009-10-08 Thread Julius Thor
Same messages here:

ath5k phy0: unsupported jumbo

I also get this message sometimes:

ath5k phy0: noise floor calibration failed

I'm on jaunty and initially I couldn't even connect to my AP at home. It
wasn't until I changed to a free channel I could connect. Now I have a
full connection but it's not fast at all. I also lose the connection
once every minute or two without being de-associated. Sometimes I do get
de-associated though.

When in the University library I usually can't associate at all and when
I do I lose the connection after a few seconds.

This is when I'm using the ath5k driver. To be able to get wireless in
the Library I have to unload ath5k and use ath_pci. That driver keeps a
more stable connection, however it causes random kernel panics and I
hate losing my work!

[Bug 300693] Re: Thinkpad T61p hardlock flashing caps lock

2009-05-14 Thread Julius Thor
About 5 days ago I tried going back to ath5k by disabling ath_pci and
the result seemed to be just like before where I would disconnect all
the time but getting less frequent lockups. Then I tried the linux-
backports-modules-jaunty (sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-
jaunty) and everything has been great since. The connection is stronger
and more stable than the older ath5k and also ath_pci and I haven't
gotten a lockup yet and that's about 4 days ago whereas ath_pci would do
it at least once a day.

Another thing that seems to be fixed is that ath_pci and the older ath5k
would disconnect quite frequently (though ath5k much more often) and
finally not being able to connect at all. I have not experienced that
yet with this new module.

I'll report back if I experience a lockup.

My wireless chipset is: AR5212

[Bug 306022] Re: Panics while using iwlagn wifi on some networks

2009-05-11 Thread Julius Thor
Hi Leann,

I'm currently on jaunty. Have been for the last month or so. The ath5k
driver was completely unusable, it kept disconnecting every minute... It
also had the lockups but not as frequent as ath_pci (madwifi) if I
remember correctly. So, I'm currently using ath_pci with the constant
lockups... Happens like once to twice a day. I will switch back to ath5k
again right now in case there have been any developments for the last
month. I'll report back.

[Bug 300693] Re: Thinkpad T61p hardlock flashing caps lock

2009-04-20 Thread Julius Thor
I've had this problem ever since upgrading from Intrepid. I did a fresh
install of Jaunty, hoping that would fix it but it persists. The only
proprietary driver that I use is the ath_pci. I could switch back to
ath5k for a few days to produce debug information for this bug.

I have installed the linux-crashdump package to capture a dump next
time it happens. Let's hope crashdump works this time.

[Bug 344385] Re: Brightness notification works only with Human Icons

2009-04-20 Thread Julius Thor
For some reason my volume stopped working the other day. I've tried
creating a symlink (ln -s notify-osd notify_osd) but that does not do
anything. All packages are up to date. Strange thing is, it was all
working fine and then one day it decided to go away. That's about 5 days
ago, I believe.

To my knowledge, all other notifications work. Wireless, Pidgin and
brightness.

[Bug 343727] Re: [Jaunty] Cannot connect to a Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000

2009-04-14 Thread Julius Thor
I can confirm this bug. The bluetooth manager reports that it's
successfully connected but the mouse does not come out of discovery
mode. But executing hidd --search gets it connected and takes it out of
discovery mode. The mouse successfully reconnects after reboot and it
does not disconnect after a period of inactivity like some people have
reported.

The mouse worked fine on Intrepid, however I don't remember if I had
hidd installed or not.

Adding the line:

Should fix this problem for many people having this problem.
If not then you could try a different model.

Executing the following command in a terminal will append the above
mentioned line to the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base configuration
file.

sudo echo options snd-hda-intel model=hippo /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-
