[Bug 1218322] Re: Can't set keyboard layout change to alt+shift, ctrl+shift, etc.

2014-04-02 Thread Kom-Si
One more rather unpleasant discovery: 'Delete' button stopped working.
The button itself is OK, I checked. It's all the new keyboard settings,
I guess. Keyboard Layout Chart shows my 'Delete' button as 'Pause'. And
there's no way I can change keyboard type (I have a mini, without Num
pad).

2014-04-01 Thread Kom-Si
@Norbert I also clean-installed 14.04 beta 2. Keyboard layout switching
doesn't work in lock screen after wake up from suspend (I use Shift+Alt
L combination). In 13.10 I still could change the layout using mouse,
but in 14.04 that didn't work. As a workaround I pressed 'switch user'
and the layout switched also (to default 'En').

Having installed the PPA (new) from the header of this I noticed that
*DELETE* button stopped working when I tried to delete *selected* word
or phrase. Reproducible in Gedit, LO Writer, other text-input fields.I
use a non-standard smallish keyboard, but so far had no problems with
it. // Ubuntu 13.04, AMD64 with all the updates.

[Bug 1286022] [NEW] Right-click menu's font is wrong

2014-02-28 Thread Kom-Si
Public bug reported:

I have set the default system font to be 8 pt.
However when I right-click within a Gedit document the menu is shown in 11 pt.
font.
I think it's a bug. Unfortunately while the right-click menu is open in Gedit I
cannot make any screenshot - neither of the program window, nor of the desktop
itself. I consider that a bug, too.

2014-02-21 Thread Kom-Si
Not quite so, @Viktor Mileikovskyi (v-mil). It depends on which button
you press first when setting the shortcut. I.e. it could be both
Shift+Alt L or Alt+Shift L (see screenshot). I have only two input
sources: English and Russian. So I set Shift+Alt L for next input and
Alt+Shift L for previous. Works like a charm, no matter which I press
first. Cheers...

[Bug 1218322] Re: Can't set keyboard layout change to alt+shift, ctrl+shift, etc.

2013-11-04 Thread Kom-Si
@Sebastien Bacher: complaints *will* continue because many readers of this
thread feel that the team does not realize how serious the situation is. In the
current release the language layout handling mechanism is broken. Completely.
Irreversibly. God knows how long it will take the team to build a new one. I
personally am very pessimistic in this respect.
And you say downgrading is not an option. For many of us it simply means
'good-bye, Ubuntu'. For the time being I'm sticking with 13.04 which ain't a
piece of cake, either. Come April, I might have to ditch all my Ubuntu
expertise and go look elsewhere, and learn something new as if I haven't learnt
enough...
The bug is not annoying as you put it; @Lockal is quite right: the bug is
*Critical* big time, alarmingly so since it crept into release.

+1, Mikhail V. Golubev.
I also wonder who is in charge nowadays of such crucial areas as language
support in Ubuntu (GNOME, Linux in general). Just for the heck of it, for I
don't think these people are capable of remedying what they've destroyed.
Simply because they know nothing of what they're doing. The whole
design/implementation is so un-Linux it makes me puke.
Judging by this thread it also seems nobody cares anymore - they're all so
complacent about their half-baked patches and crutches that barely work...

@Norbert (nrbrtx), ну хорошо, Canonical is not the be blamed (at least not for
the *whole* mess). But what Canonical DOES to address the problem? IMO very
little ATM. Do they have Russian developers on board?
Latin-based developers might just not realize how painful the whole
language-switching situation is. They might lack the experience required,
because они на эти грабли ещё не наступали... =/

[Bug 1245064] Re: Keyboard Layout Options window is missed in gnome-control-center keyboard

2013-10-27 Thread Kom-Si
Keyboard layout switching is most important and most essential functionality.
Exactly! That's why 13.10 drove me absolutely nuts. Why would anyone meddle
with functionality that's been Linux's undisputed strength for ages? OK, I
understand progress and all that stuff. But why remove it? Why replace it with
something clearly Apple-like only to discover at release stage that this
applish concoction simply doesn't work (it DID work in final beta)?!
Pathetic. I'm thoroughly disappointed with Ubuntu ATM.

Gucharmap: Languages List Is Too Narrow

Status in “gucharmap” package in Ubuntu:
   Confirmed

 Bug description:
Gnome Character Map's list of available languages (scripts) is too
narrow to view them normally (see attached screenshot). It can be widened
by dragging separator bar but the application does not remember its
position. So when restarted it shows the same extremely narrow list of
 languages.
In earlier versions of Ubuntu it worked (i.e. the application
remembered separator slider's position set by user) but for several last
Ubuntu releases it seems to be broken.
Please fix it as I use this app quite often, and the necessity to adjust
the list width each time I start it drives me crazy!

[Bug 1176103] Re: Suspend mode doesn't work

2013-05-04 Thread Kom-Si
If you mean kernel 3.8.0-18 the answer is no. 3.8.0-19 is the only
kernel I have installed. Yesterday it got updated through Software
Updater, although the version did not change. Right after that I started
experiencing problems with suspend. However later that day (after
reading some reports on similar problems with suspend) I replaced NVIDIA
proprietary driver 310 with 313. Miraculously suspend got fixed, now
it's working again as it should.

[Bug 578187] Re: can't upload google contact picture

2012-09-13 Thread Kom-Si
Gosh, I've upgraded Ubuntu four (!) times since posting this bug, I stopped
using Firefox, I travelled half of the globe, and long since v. 10.04 I stopped
caring if Google contact pictures get uploaded via Firefox.
And now in the fall of 2012 you go ahead and CONFIRM this outrageously dated
bug. Well done guys, with this kind of follow-up Linux is unbeatable... 8-|

completely disagree with people who say this is a minor bug. it's a
major show stopper for the whole project. just wonder why it takes so
long for Canonical team to fix it. Ubuntu is loosing face, literally...

But it is there in Lucid.
and in Maverick, too. and nobody's gonna jump to Natty simply because the
'stupid' splash screen bug is fixed there.
I'd rather keep on using 10.10 with a decent splash screen.

2011-03-17 Thread Kom-Si
Use open drivers - a default choice for most users
2 apienk: who says that? any statistics? visual effects don't work without
proprietary drivers, the whole GUI experience using 'nouveau' is abhorrent.
of course I tried 'nouveau', and I can surely say that it's lame. it's not just
eye-candy that I'm talking about - many apps need normal video support, and
'nouveau' just isn't up to the task. the only thing 'nouveau' really does is
the splash screen, whereas the proprietary driver does the rest, except the
splash.
I wish someone bridged the gap...

Re: [Bug 660177] Re: Rhythbox window freezes and stalls mouse

2010-10-15 Thread Kom-Si
Thanks a lot, Pedro, didn't know that. Wish someone told me that earlier - I
nearly drove myself nuts last night reinstalling reconfiguring the
system... (

BTW, I somehow managed to work around the problem, although I'm not sure
about the details.

I tried the following:

- removed samba cmpletely (apt-get purge)
- removed Rhythmbox the same way
- reinstalled Rhythmbox through Ubuntu Software Center

Tried Rhythmbox again - the above steps didn't help. Then I tried Rhythmbox
under another user account on my machine - it worked just fine! So I created
another admin account, logged into it, deleted mine, then removed and
reistalled samba Rhythmbox again via apt-get using wildcads (sudo apt-get
install samba4* rhythmbox* respectively). NOTE: I installed *samba4* this
time.

Then I re-created an account for myself and logged into it. So far
everything works, i.e. Rhythmbox (with MTP plugin active) folder sharing.

[Bug 660177] Re: Rhythbox window freezes and stalls mouse

2010-10-14 Thread Kom-Si
Seems I pinpointed the cause: this happens when I try to set sharing
options for NTFS drive I have in my system. Today I reinstalled Ubuntu
10.10, and started adding features one by one observing Rhythmbox's
behavior in-between. When I added string usershare owner only = no to
the [global] section of the /etc/samba/smb.conf file and rebooted the
machine, Rhythmbox window started freezing again.

Commenting the string in question or changing it to usershare owner
only = yes has no effect - Rhythmbox window opens frozen and stalls the
mouse. As I said above all I can do is force close Rhythmbox.

I'm afraid I have to reinstall Maverick, for I see no means to reverse
the situation. That's pretty frustrating, I had no problems sharing my
NTFS drive in Ubuntu 10.04. I think it's a system-level bug and as such
ought to be dealt with promptly.

[Bug 559892] Re: apple's mighty mouse gets a lot of USB disconnects during MTP probing

2010-10-12 Thread Kom-Si
Apart from freezing my Apple Mighty Mouse now the Rhythmox window
freezes itself (turns gray) and stays that way until I force close it.
If it's any help I attach here output of the command listed above:

rhythmbox -D mtp /tmp/rb.log 21

NB this happens when Banshee player is running, i.e. playing music.

the firefox -ProfileManager command opens another copy Firefox.
anyway, I just reinstalled Ubuntu from scratch, so I'm not likely to
experience any problems with Firefox for a while at least.
thanks for your help.

You can start the profile manager with the following command:

Re: [Bug 291409] Re: nvidia driver install fails to proceed

2008-12-07 Thread Kom-Si
Dunno... I checked the procedure I described to you several times. After
uninstalling the app (jockey) and re-installing it again everything worked
like charm.

Whenever I tried to use jockey head-on after installing the OS (Ubuntu) I
inadvertently reproduced the same buggy behavior: the app pretends it starts
downloading smth and then hangs...

The latter behavior is reproduced regardless of Ubuntu 8.10 type (32 or 64
bytes), and regardless of updates downloaded and installed after the OS
installation. I mean updates or no updates jockey on my machine misbehaved
ALWAYS, unless I ditched it without even trying and re-installed again...

Re: [Bug 291409] Re: nvidia driver install fails to proceed

2008-12-06 Thread Kom-Si
Oliver,

Actually the jockey nVidia installer that is in the main repository now has
already been fixed, and you can get it from there. It works, I checked a
couple of times.

Problem is, when you've just installed Ubuntu 8.10 it already contains a
buggy jockey installer. So my workaround is as follows:

- install Ubuntu 8.10.
- go to Applications -- Add/Remove and uninstall (uncheck) the Hardware
Drivers component.
- reboot and install it again.

On Sat, Dec 6, 2008 at 22:37, Olivier Le Thanh Duong
[EMAIL PROTECTED]wrote:

I just had the same problem after upgrading to Intrepid Ibex, it was
caused by not having the restricted repository in my sources.list and
thus the necessary package not being installable. Adding the said
 repository corrected the problem.

In any case jockey should not fail silently if it cannot install a
package (there was no error message, neither graphical or in the
console). Seems like a major issue since the nv driver doesn't works on
 my computer.

Re: [Bug 273600] Re: jockey-gtk crashed with DBusException in dbus_sync_call_signal_wrapper()

2008-11-13 Thread Kom-Si
Nay, the problem persists. I installed amd64 variant of Ubuntu 8.10 today
and couldn't start the NVIDIA driver thru System -- Administration --
Hardware Drivers at all. At earlier installation (regular Ubuntu 8.10 Live
CD) I could achieve that albeit with some struggle (Jokey behaved
strangely). Now when I try to start NVIDIA driver ver. 177 Jokey simply
hangs with 'Downloading...' window at 0%, and doesn't do anything...

I uninstalled Jockey and am downloading the driver directly thru Software
update...

Yes the problem was like this, after a long time that system was trying to
install the driver, (without any progress) the application crashes... But
this occurs only on Live CD, after installed I think that its install

 Thanks!

 2008/11/12 Martin Pitt [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I finally discovered one bug: if driver installation lasts longer than
10 minutes, the backend times out, and the GUI crashes with
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name :1.398 was not
provided by any .service files. That's a real problem, however, it's
not exactly the same crash that was reported here. That might be because
the crash you reported is yet another problem, or just because of the
slightly braindead way I used to test this.
