[Bug 2058491] [NEW] (mate-appearance-properties : GTK+ 2.x symbols detected. Using GTK+ 2.x and GTK+ 3 in the same process

2024-03-20 Thread David Robert Lewis
Public bug reported:

Appears to be cross-compiled with both GTK+2 and GTK+3 flags. Fails to
start due to error:

(mate-appearance-properties:15895): Gtk-ERROR **: 17:02:39.177: GTK+ 2.x
symbols detected. Using GTK+ 2.x and GTK+ 3 in the same process is not
supported

I know this is coming from a rather old version of Ubuntu 18.04, but
there is a reason why I'm running an old installation, and the lack of
resources is why I am running Mate. Thought I should at least let you
know this is happening.

Surprised not to see an issue reported here as it seems to be impacting
compiling Mesa-dev on Jammy and Kinetic. Perhaps I'm in the wrong
place, but seems right.

[Bug 1970043] Re: [amdgpu] freeze occurs when wayland is connected to a second monitor

2022-04-29 Thread John A. Lewis
I am seeing the same problem with using a USB-C monitor connected
directly to my laptop. I do have one crash file in /var/crash -- see
attached. The file might be a red-herring though caused only by me
trying to restart gnome-shell once it was stuck.

2022-04-01 Thread John Lewis
I've reproduced the original problem then been running proposed kernels
in bionic and focal now for at least 2 hours, and problem seems fixed:

root@machine-1:~# cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=18.04

Marking as verified in bionic - should we be doing so in focal too?

Would it be possible to give brief instructions on how to install the
latest 5.15 kernel in focal to assist in verification? There are libssl3
and libc6 dependencies which it's not obvious how to install.

[Bug 1950492] Re: wifi stops working on Dell XPS 9310

2021-11-17 Thread Mike Lewis
Same problem here with Ubuntu 20.04 on a Dell XPS 15 9500, but in my
case it was triggered by update from kernel 5.11.0-38-generic to
5.11.0-40-generic.

Apt history shows the update as occurring last Friday morning, and the
next time I rebooted (the day after) the WiFi module stopped working,
message in dmesg as above. After the error, the WiFi module is not even
visible to the BIOS.

The only way to get the WiFi module to appear again is to remove the
back of the laptop and disconnect the battery, but if I boot Linux it
immediately is knocked out again.

[Bug 1710687] Re: gvfs-backends not installed with GIMP

2021-03-15 Thread Lewis Cowles
A Friend just contacted me over email to let me know that in 20.04 this
is still an issue for them...

I am unsure how they got the error message for this, but here is a
screenshot they sent me.

The error message reads

> Could not open 'https://docs.gimp.org/2.10/en/gimp-help.xml' for reading:
> Operation not supported
> Perhaps you are missing GIO backends and need to install GVFS?

They are not on Kubuntu and I installed their machine personally, so I
know there are no oddities. It's just a standard Ubuntu install; they
are in their 80's and things can be harder for them to work-around.

My current advice to them was to run the following in terminal.

sudo apt install gimp-help-en gimp-data-extras gvfs-backends

Will that be enough?

[Bug 1870514] Re: update containerd:amd64 1.3.3-0 stops docker daemon

2020-12-02 Thread Philip Lewis
As a workaround I opted for using a systemd unit file to create a loose
dependency between containerd and dockerd.

Here's how:

As root:

Make the override directory (permission 755)

mkdir /etc/systemd/system/containerd.service.d/

Create the override file in the above directory (permissions 644)

vi override.conf

Add the following to the file

[Unit]
Before=docker.service
Wants=docker.service

Restart systemd daemon

systemctl daemon-reload

Check it works

Stop containerd

systemctl stop containerd

Check dockerd has stopped

systemctl status docker

Start containerd

systemctl start containerd

Check dockerd has started

systemctl status docker

[Bug 1894234] [NEW] Bluetooth not working with Gnome in Groovy (20.10)

2020-09-04 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

Having plugged in a USB bluetooth dongle, the gnome-bluetooth settiogs
report that I have no bluetooth adapter, and I should plug one in.

At the same time, I can see the bluetooth adapter with hciconfig, and in
fact, I can pair with remote bluetooth devices using a 3rd party
bluetooth manager (blueman).

Obviously this is not ideal, as it is not fully integrated with gnome,
sound devices are not fully available etc..

I'm not sure what else I can provide, but:-

[Bug 1894151] [NEW] Screenshot related keyboard shortcuts not working in groovy

2020-09-03 Thread James Lewis
Public bug reported:

I've been testing groovy, and for the last couple of days (Since some
time around the last few days of August), the screenshot related
shortcuts like "printscreen" or "shift+printscreen" have stopped
working.

I've tried re-defining them in the shortcuts menu, but they just don't
work I hope this is fixed before release, as I use
"shift+printscreen" a LOT!

What actually happened instead, was "absolutely nothing"... :)

Hope this helps.

[Bug 1892099] Re: [needs-packaging] linux-source-5.4.0 is not available for Ubuntu 18.04.5

2020-08-19 Thread Colton Lewis
This bug may be more appropriate in the linux project.

They already make a linux-source-5.4 package.
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux

It is provided in Ubuntu 20 repositories. I see no reason why the kernel
would be different between Ubuntu 18 and Ubuntu 20 if it is the same
version.

[Bug 1341944] Re: 32-Bit UEFI bootloader support needed

2020-07-04 Thread Lewis Cowles
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1592229 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1592229

FYI, I fixed the 20.04 official ISO using rufus with a USB drive that my
machine could boot.

I thought I'd only used Ubuntu official, but apparently I'm using
https://github.com/hirotakaster/baytail-
bootia32.efi/blob/master/bootia32.efi judging from the signatures.

I also downloaded `grub-efi-ia32-bin_2.04-1ubuntu26_amd64.deb` from
ubuntu repositories. It's pre-compiled, so I'd imagine it includes a
signature (at least I was not bothered for one).

I used the tool Rufus to create a USB booting media from the official
20.04 Desktop ISO.

I unpacked usr\lib\grub\i386-efi, omitting the "monolithic" sub-folder
to my boot/grub folder

I then overwrote the .lst files and .cfg files with the same ones as the
amd64 image uses

Past that point, ubuntu set everything up for me, including detecting
and installing `grub-efi-ia32`

I had to swap out the heat-sink, because it was a thick piece of what
looked like Aluminium foil. I added a Raspberry-Pi 4b heatsink that did
not fit on a Pi-4B, and cut out a hole on the back of the tablet.

I lastly disabled the swap as it's an EMMC and swapping I believe will
wear out the media faster.

My only complaint is that the keys on the on-screen-keyboard are tiny
and I need to use a stylus, but I don't, I use the device as an 9"
portable screen, which I can interact with via micro-USB.

To install Ubuntu I did need a micro-usb to usb-A adapter, with a port
multiplexor so that I could use a wired keyboard and mouse.

Install took longer than 15 minutes, possibly an hour. Tablet boots and
I took a backup of the windows install in-case I ever want to go back
using gnome disks utility to a micro-SD that got particularly hot, but
did not die. Be careful with heat on these things.

Wi-Fi works
Touchscreen & orientation work
micro-SD works
There seems to be a 4MB drive that shows up. I backed it up to micro-SD, but
it's not a part of the eMMC. I'm assuming it's firmware and never touching it.
Intel graphics works and plays minecraft using optifine (works slower without)

Sometimes OOM crashes the entire device
I do turn off screen blanking
external HDMI via microHDMI -> full HDMI works
Lack of keyboard and mouse and no detection of primary touch device means the
tablet is unusable without at least a mouse via USB

If I'm honest, avoid buying these cheap devices, but I would be
interested to find out how to contribute grub-ia32-efi-bin for all
64-bit ISO's, just so people can get started.

I'd also be interested in automatically enabling the on-screen keyboard
for touch devices on intel Atom

[Bug 1880830] [NEW] deja-dup failing with gpg read errors

2020-05-27 Thread Wim Lewis
Public bug reported:

Starting a couple weeks ago, backups have begun failing with the
following message. Until now, I have had no problems with backups; I
backup via ssh to a cloud provider. (Until ~6 months ago I was backing
up via ssh to a machine on my local net.) The scheduled backup asks for
my ssh key passphrase and backup encryption passphrase as normal, but a
few minutes later this error is displayed. The mounted ssh filesystem is
visible in Nautilus and looks normal to me.

[Bug 1872252] [NEW] Wifi manager not working after 2nd suspend. Reboot Fixes

2020-04-11 Thread Lewis Randall
Public bug reported:

After hours of googling and several fresh installs of Ubuntu 19.10 I
still can't get my wifi working right.

After suspending the system for the 2nd time after a full power cycle,
the wifi card stops working entirely. No noetworks, resetting the
service doen't work and using the b43 installer package doesn't either.
I've tried several scripts from the forums put in to the suspend startup
folder (linux noob alert). At my wits end, and although rebooting Ubuntu
takes less than half the time of Windows or MacOS I'm finding it really
irritating. Han I haz Help PLZ

[Bug 1862830] Re: Update sosreport to 3.9

2020-02-27 Thread John Lewis
Tried it out on a juju controller in lxd works fine
Tried it on a bionic cluster (bundles made with stsstack-bundles
generate-bundle.sh and no options) - first time I ran through it go stuck on
nova-compute and I had to ctrl+c. Ran again, no issues.
Have tried --upload with --all-logs and no problem uploading 777MB
Particularly happy a customer can run with a cli such as "sudo sosreport -a
--case-id 00263859 --upload" and it now requires no other user interaction to
attach to the case! Nice one Eric!

[Bug 1774302] Re: package gridengine-master 8.1.9+dfsg-7build1 failed to install/upgrade: installed gridengine-master package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 139

2019-08-21 Thread Callum Lewis-Smith
I have been grappling with this issue myself over the last couple of
weeks and can confirm using the spooldefaults.bin, libspooldb.so and
libspoolc.so from the Debian gridengine-client APT package, linked by
christophprobst resolved the issue.

However, I have also been able to compile and install the gridengine
client from the Debian source tarball for 8.1.9+dfsg-9 and haven't
encountered any segfaults.

@kaihengfeng - How do I find and install that Kernel? Sorry, I'm used to
just using the gui and command line tools to upgrade, not sure how I
find and install that kernel manually. I am used to using apt for
installing general packages, just this scenario is new to me and I can't
find any instructions on google.

Note that this became 100% consistent. As in every time I booted I got the
issue, rather than just most of the time.
Also, that it's now in release 5.0.0.20-lowlatency, 64 bit version.

fair enough - but my update is that it became 100% consistent. As in every
time I booted I got the issue.
Also, that it's now in 5.0xxx

[Bug 1787857] Re: USB mouse cursor lags after random time of correct behaviour

2019-06-24 Thread vince lewis
I have the same issue.

At the login screen, I select my user, enter the password, the mouse works fine
at this point.
Click on login, wait, screen comes up then at random, the mouse either
works fine (about 1 time in 5) or it goes really really slow (4 times out of 5).

Only way I'm working around it is to reboot (usually 5 times ish) till
it decides to work.

As a test manager by trade I would say this is a P3 at least not a P4,
as it's definitely a functional issue not cosmetic, albeit with an
untidy workaround (many reboots).

I'm running 4.15.0-52-lowlatency #56-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT Tue Jun 4
23:39:39 UTC 2019 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I'll post contents of lshw and lspci, let me know if you need more.

[Bug 1793465] Re: Mate Panel consumes huge amount of memory even when idling

2019-04-26 Thread Jim Lewis
Not sure if this helps anyone here but thought I should follow up. This memory
leak issue appears to have been fixed* on the Fedora 30 Mate Spin Beta
(mate-panel-1.22.0-3.fc30.x86_64). It's only been up for 4 days, however,
mate-panel started at 0.5 memory usage and has not changed at all.
I am running the clock with seconds, the System Monitor, and everything else I
can think of to try and see the leak again and it's not happening. I expect to
see uptimes of 400+ days again, yay!

*fixed: As in I didn't have to change any files or not run the seconds
on the clock. It now works as it did in all the previous versions of
Fedora before 28.

[Bug 1807277] [NEW] Cannot set tiling background for desktop

2018-12-06 Thread Wim Lewis
Public bug reported:

The Ubuntu settings app used to allow choosing how the background image
would fit the window (tiled, stretched, centered). It no longer offers
any choices, backgrounds are always stretched.

(Other approaches, like alt-clicking on an image in Firefox, still allow
me to set a tiled background, so clearly the system is still capable of
it, but it has vanished from the settings UI.)

The settings app also seems generally sparser and less functional than
before, which is off-putting.

[Bug 1793465] Re: Mate Panel consumes huge amount of memory even when idling

2018-12-03 Thread Jim Lewis
I also have this problem on the Fedora 28 Mate Spin (I hope it's okay to
put that here). I routinely set the clock to show the seconds and that
really uses up the memory. Note that with absolutely nothing
"refreshing" the screen there is still some leakage. I have been using
Fedora since version 3 and I have never seen this before. For example, I
have a Fedora 27 Mate laptop that has been running for 381 days, no
leaks of any kind.

I have several computers to test things on and so if I can be of any
help on this please let me know.

[Bug 969359] Re: [keyboard]: gnome-settings-daemon consumes 100% cpu (and blinking numlock)

I've just encountered this today with 18.04, all updates installed both
gsd-color and gsd-keyboard and gsd-clipboard all maxing out CPU leading
to 60 seconds of non-interactive machine (I know lots of people that
would have simply power-cycled, but I wanted to know if it was a
separate issue).

[Bug 1793594] [NEW] IAKERB-HEADER "Realm" field incorrectly encoded as OCTET STRING

2018-09-20 Thread Wim Lewis
Public bug reported:

Background:

Under some circumstances, when the client/initiator has a TGT but no
ticket for a particular principal, it needs to communicate with the KDC.
The GSSAPI protocol includes a mechanism, a subprotocol named IAKERB,
for the client to tunnel/proxy through the server/acceptor instead of
directly communicating with the KDC. (This is useful if e.g. the GSSAPI
initiator does not have full network access but the acceptor does.)

Problem:

The formatting of the IAKERB messages is incorrect. Every draft of the
IAKERB protocol I have been able to find defines the IAKERB-HEADER
structure to have a field "Realm" which is a UTF8String, like this:

   IAKERB-HEADER ::= SEQUENCE {
   target-realm [1] UTF8String,

However, observed protocol exchanges tag the Realm field as an OCTET
STRING.

I believe the bug is in src/lib/krb5/asn.1/asn1_k_encode.c near line
1146, where the DEFFIELD(iakerb_header_1,...) macro is invoked with
"ostring_data". I think it should be invoked with "utf8_data" instead.

Reproduction:

I observed this using Firefox attempting to authenticate with a webserver using
the "Negotiate" protocol. The first Negotiate message from the browser to the
server contains:
  GSSAPI token (RFC2743 3.3); mechanism 1.3.6.1.5.5.2 (SPNEGO)
innerToken is a NegTokenInit (RFC4178 4.2.1)
  mech = 1.3.6.1.5.2.5 (IAKERB)
mechToken is a (wrapped) GSSAPI token (RFC2743 again) with mech =
1.3.6.1.5.2.5
innerToken is the concatenation of:
  TOK_ID 05 01 (IAKERB)
  IAKERB-HEADER
  a Kerberos TGS-REQ

Dumping the IAKERB-HEADER with `openssl asnparse` produces:

0:d=0 hl=2 l= 12 cons: SEQUENCE
2:d=1 hl=2 l= 10 cons: cont [ 1 ]
4:d=2 hl=2 l= 8 prim: OCTET STRING :.ORG

As you can see the realm (.ORG) is tagged as OCTET STRING, rather
than being tagged as UTF8String.

[Bug 1737608] Re: RPATH no longer respected for indirect dependencies

2018-09-18 Thread Tony Lewis
I think this is related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eglibc/+bug/1253638

My understanding (gleaned in large part from comment #5 of that issue -
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eglibc/+bug/1253638/comments/5
; errors all mine) is:

* RPATH tells the loader where to look for all libraries
* the RPATH was deprecated a long time ago because it was thought to be a
mistake that RPATH is processed with higher priority than the LD_LIBRARY_PATH
environment variable
* that deprecation has recently made it's way out to Ubuntu
* the ld linker (?) now defaults to setting RUNPATH instead of RPATH. RUNPATH
differs from RPATH in two ways:
  * it's has *lower priority* than the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable, and
  * the loader only uses it to search for direct dependencies, *not transitive
dependencies*
* this means that a lot of people are going to spend a lot of time trying to
figure out why their stuff is broken.

As I understand it, there are two solutions:
 * link with --disable-new-dtags to make linker revert to setting RPATH
 * fix all your .so files so that they can find their own dependencies (via a
RUNPATH setting)

In my case, I fixed my problem by rebuilding my Boost libraries with a
dll-path flag to tell the build where the .so files would be installed.

After using the following commands to create a mixer to add a soundboard
to a mic input using pulseaudio, I notice that the "device description"
is displayed correctly in each tab, but in the "Recording" tab it just
shows "Null Output" for each device.

pactl load-module module-null-sink sink_name=MUSIC
pacmd 'update-sink-proplist MUSIC device.description="Dummy Input"'
pactl load-module module-null-sink sink_name=MIXER
pacmd 'update-sink-proplist MIXER device.description="Dummy Mixer"'
pactl load-module module-loopback
sink="alsa_output.pci-_00_1f.3.analog-stereo"
pactl load-module module-loopback sink="MIXER"
pactl load-module module-loopback sink="MIXER"

Screenshot attached

As you can imagine, it makes it hard to work out what's going on when
devices all have the same name!

[Bug 1790732] Re: killall unable to find privileged processes

2018-09-07 Thread Lewis Hyatt
OK, thanks for the information, makes sense. We will work around with
/usr/local/bin wrapper for now. It's a bit unfortunate, that the change
made upstream for psmisc 23.2,will make the "-n 0" option illegal again,
but it's workable for us like this.

[Bug 1790732] Re: killall unable to find privileged processes

2018-09-05 Thread Lewis Hyatt
Thanks for looking into this. I see the necessary fix referenced in the
ChangeLog here: https://gitlab.com/psmisc/psmisc/blob/master/ChangeLog .
But I'm afraid I don't have any more information beyond that, perhaps
this version is not released yet, but maybe the Debian maintainers are
aware of the timeline for that?

[Bug 1790732] [NEW] killall unable to find privileged processes

2018-09-04 Thread Lewis Hyatt
Public bug reported:

Hello-

In Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS, we have psmisc version 23.1. In this version, the
default for "killall" is to kill processes in the current namespace
only, and this causes killall to attempt to read /proc/$pid/ns/pid for
every process. If a process is privileged (setuid, or has capabilities
granted), then /proc/$pid/ns is not readable and killall is not able to
match this process. So e.g. "killall ping" fails to kill anything even
if a ping is running. It seems that psmisc may have recognized this
issue, as in 23.2 the default was changed back to killing in all
namespaces and not trying to read the namespace information from /proc.
In the meantime, killall requires the "-n 0" argument as a workaround.

This issue is pretty impactful, at least for us, as it requires finding
all instances of killall and adding the extra argument... is it possible
to get psmisc version upped to 23.2? Thanks...

-Lewis

[Bug 1711346] Re: gprolog toplevel fails on basic example (fixed upstream?)

2018-07-05 Thread Ian Lewis
thanks - I can confirm gprolog 1.4.4 compiles from source ok on Ubuntu
18.04, and runs without this bug. I wasn't expecting the 1.4.5 bugfix
to appear here but thought it would make sense to package 1.4.4 rather
than 1.4.5

[Bug 1711346] Re: gprolog toplevel fails on basic example (fixed upstream?)

2018-07-04 Thread Ian Lewis
Here's the simplest failing test example I could come up with, which is
close to 'hello world' for prolog :

$ prolog
GNU Prolog 1.4.5 (64 bits)
Compiled Feb 5 2017, 10:30:08 with gcc
By Daniel Diaz
Copyright (C) 1999-2016 Daniel Diaz

compiling user for byte code...

q(a).

user compiled, 2 lines read - 294 bytes written, 13418 ms

yes
| ?- p.
uncaught exception: error(existence_error(procedure,q/0),p/0)
| ?-

On the query "?- p." gprolog should return with "yes", not the
exception.

[Bug 1711346] Re: gprolog toplevel fails on basic example (fixed upstream?)

2018-07-03 Thread Ian Lewis
Just to emphasize, this bug means that the Prolog programming language
is realistically unavailable in all Ubuntu versions since 16.04. The
1.4.5-4.1 build of gprolog has this fundamental crippling bug as
reported by the OP - even the most basic Prolog programs will not run -
and unfortunately the 1.4.4 make from source also throws up a number of
compile errors so it is a specialist job to get that code installed.

[Bug 1728763] Re: Current frequency not being updated

2018-04-24 Thread Tony Lewis via ubuntu-bugs
This is now fixed for me, I noticed just now. Dpkg tells me the package
hasn't changed. I just rebooted with a kernel upgrade to
4.13.0-39-generic, but I don't know if it that was the trigger for it
starting to work again or not. I haven't checked it for months.

I won't close yet, I'll wait for some 'me too's

Keep in context this is "PowerPC" and I bugged it because I'm still
using these great builds on my still working G5 towers and imac's. I
would like to goto 18.04 TLS can you tell me what repo's I need to point
to?
