[Bug 159356] Re: When DMA is disabled system freeze on high memory usage

2019-03-09 Thread lou
Which distro are you testing on?

Any Debian based (past 4 yrs at least), Arch, Fedora-- OOM does NOT kick
in. Try it on a bootable USB instance as I suggested. No swap there at
all.

Changing min_free just makes the freeze occur earlier. (also depends on
which DE. Gnome/Unity is the worst offender..

[Bug 159356] Re: When DMA is disabled system freeze on high memory usage

2019-02-13 Thread lou
I'm posting again. This bug still exists. Easily reproducible. Here's
how. (You NEED to be able to essentially use up RAM to see this bug in
action)

Tested on a 3GB desktop (Core 2 Quad), running Live Ubuntu 18.10 LTS off
of a flash drive (pendrivelinux.com). Kernel 4.18.0-10.

FF 63.0. I set the download folder to a dir on the hard drive so as not
to deliberately stress free RAM.

With the system showing about 1.5GB free (System Monitor/Resources tab),
trying to d/l this 1.25GB ROM image from Mega (
https://mega.nz/#!KUAyRKjJ!3hALO7dkuyFdE41BTWf1OfHaZmdTA-Kzd8q0HYiMbYs
), the d/l gets to 100% but system monitor shows RAM at 97% or 98%, the
flash drive lights up and stays lit. System frozen, as I've reported
previously with my other laptops.

I've mitigated this on the laptops because they now have 8GB of RAM.
BUT-- even then, I can STILL crash those systems using Live Debian (or
whatever flavor). It just takes more stressing (more open tabs, bigger
d/l's, whatever) to get there, but it does.

Quite the blackpill that Linux memory management has the serious flaw
un-addressed for 13 years now.

It's very easy to reproduce on *any* 64-bit system following the
guidelines above.

[Bug 159356] Re: When DMA is disabled system freeze on high memory usage

2018-09-24 Thread lou
@constantoverride

Thanks for the patch. AS I'm running Live, I can't upgrade the kernel.

It looks like that patch was merged into the mainline kernel at some
point since it's reported here:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1577528 , that the bug no
longer exists.

I'll have to wait for Debian to rebase a release on 4.17.5 or greater it
seems.

[Bug 159356] Re: When DMA is disabled system freeze on high memory usage

2018-09-23 Thread lou
Update:

I'd commented in detail about this bug (post 77,78). I run the live
versions of Linux on a 4GB Core-i5 laptop (and another 4GB pentium
laptop also.)

Just wanted to add:

I've added 4Gb of RAM to the Core-i5 laptop for 8Gb total now. This
helps a lot, but it's not a cure.

With Fedora 28, the system will still cease up with maybe 2 dozen (or
less depending on what's happening (video, etc) ) FF tabs opened/active.

I came back here to note that, I'm currently using a Live Debian Stretch
(9.5).

There are obviously significant differences in the way these variants of
Linux manage memory.

Why?

Because under the same system conditions (Gnome, same s/w programs
installed and/or running), I can open WAY more tabs in FF on Debian;
open more simultaneous programs, without fear of a sudden system heart-
attack.

In fact, it is much harder for me to cause the system freeze in Debian,
even with approaching 50 tabs opened in FF developer 63...

I understand there are underlying Fedora vs Debian system differences
like: systemd vs init, and Wayland vs Xorg, Gnome versions (3.28.1 vs
3.22.5) and kernel revisions (4.16.3-301.fc28.x86_64 vs 4.9.110-1
(2018-07-05) ), but in all, I find Debian WA more forgiving, and
more manageable, ESPECIALLY in light of this FATAL flaw, AND the known
Gnome memory leak bug which can easily be remediated for in Debian by
restarting Gnome (via Alt-F2, r) to free back up that memory. (The only
way to accomplish this in Fedora is to actually log out of your session
because of Wayland limitations.)

Anyway, I jut thought it's another data point to add to the mystery.

I still have to keep resource monitor opened even in Stretch, just in
case, but I only crashed Stretch once over the past 3 months or so when
I was in the 80's (mem % used) and let a video play for 2 hrs without
checking up.

Normally anyway, that percentage isn't rising above the 70's in my
typical "working" environment.

Finally, I'd like to mention to those asking for logs, etc., for this
issue, realize that WHEN this issue occurs, it *is* essentially a heart-
attack for the system. There is no recourse, and no way to gather logs.
EVERYTHING ceases up- usually never to come back. A hard power-cycle is
the only recourse, and NO logs which would shed light on the issue are
written. EVERYTHING stops- including log writing.

This is the reality.

I *do* have a few logs from and old (non-live) Jesse 8.7.1 install-- for
a few times when, the system did revive, after hours-- and there's
nothing in there that would shed light on the issue. The (very) few
(interesting/odd) entries in the log that I've researched pointed to no
other instances/causes of this same issue.

It would be nice after 11 or 12 years of this issue, if someone higher
up and more knowledgeable in the development "food chain" would would
simply replicate the issue, it's not really that hard to do so at all.

It honestly is a show-stopper.

Ciao.

..Forgot to add, the Fedora 27 live version is running on one laptop in

it for those curious and runs developer version of FF (60).

It has happens here with gedit with 8 files opened, 2 file manager

audio.. that's the base.

[Bug 159356] Re: System freeze on high memory usage

2018-05-04 Thread lou
Fedora 27, fully affected.

New to linux a couple of years ago, I decided to try 'live' versions on
two Win 7 laptops (4GB Ram each).

Debian 8.6 first, then 8.7, 9.2 and 9.3. Ubuntu 14,15,16
Fedora 26, currently 27
DE's: Xfce, GNOME, Unity, Mate, Cinnamon, always the same problem.
(XFce hold up the longest; less memory intensive)

Manifested when multiple tabs are opened on the web browser (10,15,20,25,
depending on the browser and version and how memory intensive it is):
FF52 up to 61 developers (the newer ones eat up memory faster)
Chrome, Chromium.

I banged my head against the wall for 1.5 years before I stumbled upon
this thread, thinking it was bad memory (many days of running memtest),
or other hardware (but in both laptops? Couldn't be).

The system will suddenly SEIZE up if you're close to memory capacity. If
I am close, and I take my eyes off the USB drive for an instant and it
begins to flash non-stop, once it goes beyond 10 seconds I likely cannot
drop to the console I keep opened to kill the Firefox ps. Maybe it will
respond after an hour, 2 or 4 hours, usually not. Time to power off.

Now I keep gnome-system-monitor opened and watch the memory approach 96%
and restart the browser, and in the case of Debian/Ubuntu on X11,
restart gnome-shell (which has a major leak problem also).

On one laptop I did make a separate partition for Deb 8.7 with a swap
space. Same thing happens. I will observe the HD light come on and stay
solid. That's the end.

I was shocked to find this bug and that it has existed for more than 10
years.

It makes this almost an nonviable platform and I'm loving Linux
otherwise.

Sorry for the rant, there was 1.5 years of frustration built into it.

Thanks for all the work the dev's do, I know it aint easy.

[Bug 1296270] Re: Have to login twice after suspending

2018-02-13 Thread Yu Lou
Same issue after upgrading from Ubuntu Gnone 17.04 to Ubuntu 17.10.

First I purged gnome-screensaver, but it didn't work.

Then I went to Setting -> Privacy -> Screen Lock -> Automatic Screen
Lock and turned it off. Now the original Gnome lock screen went away and
only one lock screen is left.

[Bug 1686107] Re: Latest kernel update gets stuck

2018-01-21 Thread Yu Lou
I had a similar problem while upgrading from Ubuntu Gnome 17.04 to 17.10
on Dell XPS 15(with GTX 1050 graphics card). The kernel version that I
was trying to install was 4.13.0-25.

I successfully solved the problem by killing dpkg, switching to text-
only console(Ctrl+Alt+F6), and running `sudo dpkg --configure -a`.

It seems like this problem is related to Nvidia driver.

[Bug 1637733] Re: freeze on login with prime-select intel

2017-10-06 Thread Yu Lou
I experienced a similar situation with a fresh installation of Ubuntu
Gnome on Dell XPS 15. I didn't install virtual box.

Details about my computer:

Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz
Graphics: GeForce GTX 1050/PCIe/SSE2
Driver: Nvidia binary driver version 384.90; Processor microcode from
intel-microcode(proprietary)

After running "prime-select intel" and log out, I couldn't log in again.
When I tried to log in, the screen just blanked out and got back to log
in screen after a few seconds. After I run "prime-select nvidia" in tty
to restore settings, I can log in.

The solution on #11 didn't work for me. It successfully shut down the
graphics, but I couldn't open GUI anymore and had to reboot to power up
the graphics.

However, I did find some workaround if you just want to reduce the power
consumption. Instead of shutting down the graphics, you may constrain
the clock rate by using this method:

https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/572053/linux/-solved-forcing-
maximum-power-saving-on-the-desktop-quot-minimum-power-quot-mode-for-
powermizer-/

It worked on my computer and helped me to get rid of the annoying sound
from GPU fan.

This isn't an issue with ffmpeg itself. oggenc also fails, so you should
ask upstream at Xiph for an explanation. If you want such low bitrates I
suggest using Opus audio instead (which your ffmpeg supports).

[Bug 1409032] Re: gvfsd-smb: very high CPU utilisation

2016-09-02 Thread Lou
Addendum to post #48
After installing Xenial dist upgrade a few eeks ago the number of bugs caused
me to reinstall Trusty 14.04.4 from cd. Although this gvfs problem did not
exist in my original 14.04 system (installed in 2013) it cropped up in my new
install - Nautilus could not find my NAS and the fan began to run at high
speed. Applying the fix from post #29 followed by reboot fixed the problem
immediately. I do not have Samba installed on this computer so it does seem to
ba a gvfs problem.

Bugzilla/Gnome has an outstanding bug (#549463) from 2008(?!) that
sounds the same but I wonder why (for me at least) this did not exist in
14.04 and is suddenly turning up in 16.04. At first I thought it might
be due to the deprecated version of Nautilus in 16.04 but the same
problem shows up in Gigolo and the common denominator seems to be gvfs.

[Bug 1409032] Re: gvfsd-smb: very high CPU utilisation

2016-08-03 Thread Lou
Just upgraded one of my machines to Xubuntu 16.04 and encountered this
bug. The info in post #29 solved it for me but I will be waiting for an
official fix before upgrading my other machine. Inconceivable that this
is unassigned after 18 months.

[Bug 1511653] [NEW] TearFree is not working after I reopen the monitor, everytime.

2015-10-30 Thread Lou Lan
Public bug reported:

Xubuntu 15.10
Package Version:2.99.917+git20150808-0ubuntu4
Graphic Card :Intel HD Graphics 2500

Same as the title.I added the 20-intel.conf with TearFree enable to
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d.It use to work fine in 15.04.Recently I
upgraded the system,it was a fresh install,then it happened,really
annoying.

Steps to reproduce:

#Set the Blank after to 1(or whatever except Never) minutes in Xfce Power
Manager
1.Wait until the monitor blanked then wake it.Open a window and shake it,the
window is tearing.
2.Logout and login,TearFree works again.
Do it again,it's a loop!

[Bug 1129524] Re: [MSI GT70 0NC] Precise Quantal won't boot in UEFI

2013-12-03 Thread Lou Hurst
Hi, sorry for the lengthy delay.

Downloaded today's (12/03/2013) version of Trusty via link in comment
#60.

Tried to boot in UEFI, via USB stick, no joy. System will boot to the
Ubuntu choices menu (Try, Install, etc.) I chose Try, screen went black
and no further activity for approximately 30 minutes. Tried the Install
option, same result.

System set to Legacy, Trusty will boot into trial mode but mouse and
touchpad don't seem to work.

[Bug 1129511] Re: Unable to boot system in EFI unless acpi=off quiet splash deleted from grub

2013-09-21 Thread Lou Hurst
Alas, still no joy.

I updated to the latest development kernel and as previously. In EFI,
system stops immediately after startup.

I am able to boot with the latest development kernal when system is in
LEGACY mode.

Additionally -

I downloaded the latest daily build (9/21/2013) of Saucy. Tried to boot
via usb stick in EFI, no joy, system stops immediately after the Ubuntu
try it, install it screen. Editing startup options to acpi=off quiet
splash deleted, same thing, immediate stop after hitting F10 to
continue with boot.

System DOES boot Saucy flawlessly with system in LEGACY mode and the few
tests I did it works fine.

Thanks again!

Just noticed in summary

+ Unable to boot system in EFI unless acpi=off quiet splash
deleted

I am unable to boot the system even if acpi=off and quiet splash is
deleted from grub.

As soon as I hit F10 from the edit screen to continue with boot the
screen goes blank and all USB stick activity appears to stop. Have let
it it sit up to 30 minutes in this state with no change.

Thanks

[Bug 1129524] Re: Precise Quantal won't boot in UEFI

2013-05-10 Thread Lou Hurst
I'm sorry I'm unable to disable my network card in BIOS setup - there
aren't very many options to begin with; the only one dealing with the
network is what position to give it in order of priority for boot.

[Bug 1129524] Re: Precise Quantal won't boot in UEFI

I will be restoring this machine to factory configuration with Windows 8
via UEFI this afternoon. Is there any information needed from the
machine in it's factory config?

Thank you.

[Bug 1129524] Re: Precise Quantal won't boot in UEFI

2013-03-13 Thread Lou Hurst
I should be a bit more specific, I created a system restore USB stick
that does successfully work with UEFI enabled. It has Windows 8 on it
as part of the software. I used that stick twice previously.

That said, if I restore my system to factory is there something specific
I should do after restoring Win 8 to report or upload here?

Thanks.

[Bug 1129524] Re: Precise Quantal won't boot in UEFI

2013-03-12 Thread Lou Hurst
Short answer is yes I can install Windows on the machine UEFI. If I can
avoid it I would prefer not doing that now as I'm using it with 12.04LTS
as my daily work/production computer - the display is almost dead in my
other computer.

Longer answer is I created a rescue USB stick when I got the machine and
have successfully restored the machine to factory state twice with it.
That includes the usual crapware, factory drivers, etc. I've also
updated my BIOS to the latest version.

I could probably do this project in a few days; if I do it is there
anything I should do after that to report back?

Thank you.

Sorry, tried everything I know of to get this machine to boot via

Have added tag 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream' and marked as Confirmed.

Please advise if anything else needed.

2013-03-06 Thread Lou Hurst
When I first received this machine I created a system recovery rescue
USB stick. The system boots UEFI with that rescue device and restores
the system as designed. Would there be any boot files from that disk
that would be beneficial for debugging here? Will be glad to provide
what I can.

Thanks.

Quick question regarding reply #12 and data collection -

I am currently running 12.04LTS on this box with the problem. It boots
into that via setting my BIOS to legacy so I am able to run apport-
collect. That said will the data collection via apport-collect be good
since I can't boot the box via UEFI?

Thanks.

[Bug 1129524] Re: Precise Quantal won't boot in UEFI

2013-03-05 Thread Lou Hurst
This issue occurs with 12.04, 12.10, and 13.04 (daily build from
2/21.2013.)

Realizing it's not on topic it also occurs with gparted, Knoppix,
Linux Mint 13, Fedora; nothing I've tried Linux works beyond this point.

Will run apport in a few moments.

Thank you.

[Bug 1129524] Re: Precise Quantal won't boot in UEFI

2013-03-04 Thread Lou Hurst
I'm new at this bug reporting, is there a reason the status of this bug
is incomplete after supplying requested info? Is there something
further I need to do?

Thanks!

[Bug 1129524] Re: Precise Quantal won't boot in UEFI

2013-03-04 Thread Lou Hurst
Thank you for the reply, glad I didn't mess something up.

Per request in reply #9, edited start option with both 'quiet' and
'splash' removed from the boot line.

Response was the same as in reply #6. Upon pressing F10 to continue
booting the USB drive flashes once and the screen goes black and remains
that way, also no further activity from the USB stick.

This occurs with 12.04, 12.10 and 13.04 (daily build from 2/21/2013)

[Bug 1129524] Re: Precise Quantal won't boot in UEFI

2013-02-22 Thread Lou Hurst
In 12.04, 12.10 and 13.04 editing to remove quiet from the boot
options then hitting F10 to continue boot, the screen immediately goes
black. As I hit F10 the USB flash drive blinks once, then no further
activity.

In my BIOS I've tried this with Fast Boot Enabled and Disabled.

I've tried also gparted live, Linux Mint, Fedora, Knoppix, none will
boot in UEFI mode, all do the same as above, i.e. as soon as I choose
and option at the first option menu it goes to a black screen.

The machine will boot in UEFI with the recovery USB stick I made for the
original Win 8 install.

I do turn off Secure Boot when the system is set to UEFI.

I forgot to add that the version of 13.04 I used is the daily build from
2/21/2013.
