(upstream here) Yes Amarok 2.2 introduces a lot of new features. However some of them are essential features for a lot of users. For example audio CD support and support for universal mass storage devices or playlist sorting and shuffeling. Jaunty shipped Amarok 2.0.2 which was lacking a lot of features and we are still getting flack for it and a ton of bug reports which are all fixed in 2.2. Shipping 2.1.1 in Karmic would mean another 6 months of angry users for upstream and Kubuntu. It'd be a pity if we have to wait another 6 months to make up for 2.0 WRT stability and bugs 2.2 beta 1 is probably better already than 2.1. We will tag beta 2 on Monday and final release on 28th. Hey Andrew :) Yes that is basically it. Thanks for writing this down. Just a small clarification: We support only Phonon as an engine now. But Phonon can use different backends like gstreamer and xine. This makes it a lot easier for us as we are no longer responsible for all the low level audio stuff but can concentrate on other things and let people who really understand it and want to make it work work on it. About a bounty for Amarok 1.4's sound system: You could try it but honestly we tried to fix this in 1.4. And it is badly broken. So your time and money is really better spend on Amarok 2. This is a Phonon backend problem. You are most likely using GStreamer which is known to be buggy and not recommended by us. The Phonon devs know about the problem. We (as in I and the rest of the Amarok team) no longer work on Amarok 1. We (as in I and the rest of the Kubuntu team) do not have the resources to fix this. Summarising my conversation with Scott on IRC: TV-Browser should go in because it is the only good TV schedule program on Linux I know that has German TV stations. It has a few very nifty features like favourite show lists, reminders, recording using external programs and integration of IMDB and Google search. It is widely used as far as I can tell. Besides that it should have been included in Ubuntu a few releases ago but was not due to licensing issues which seem to be fixed now. There was an unofficial repository for it which does not offer updates since hardy and I assume this will not change in the near future.
