Don't do that, it would end up as RESOLVED WONTFIX. If we are linked
against a lib it needs to be present. That's a downstream propblem.

[Bug 1158181] [NEW] Kubuntu uses two virtual desktops as a default

2013-03-21 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu Raring uses two virtual desktops as a default. This is a
derivation from upstream which has only one virtual desktop as default.

I don't want to discuss pro and cons of one vs. two virtual desktops by
default, but the current derivation has some severe usability issues.

For example there is no pager, so a user has no hint that there are
virtual desktops at all. Scrolling on the desktop background switches
the desktop. This is extremely annoying for an experienced user such as
me, because my windows just went away without any feedback. If I would
imagine that I'm a normal user having no clue about virtual desktop I
would have been completely lost. The unwanted desktop switch happened
several times to me, due to the usage of a touchpad.

My recommendation would be to remove the derivation in the defaults and
go for one virtual desktop. Upstream has configured the defaults to make
it most easy for "normal" users who are not familiar with virtual
desktops. But at the same time it is prepared for experienced users by
having this switch on desktop by wheel on desktop as a default.

Another option would be to re-add the pager.

possibility will be removed upstream in the next release, that is in

[Bug 532421] Re: New Lucid theme has merged menubar and metacity. Makes it difficult to grab the right area to move windows

2010-03-05 Thread Martin Gräßlin
I just want to mention, that the kwin quick tiling feature is enabled by
default in KDE SC 4.4 (Kubuntu Lucid) both on update and fresh install.

This change in the GTK Style will cause differences between the
behaviour of the application and the window manager. Please note that in
kwin there is a drag distance respecting the KDE wide drag settings.
Those settings are not and will not be honoured by the change in the GTK
Style. Please also note that KDE shipps merged title and menu bars since
4.0 (Intrepid in case of Ubuntu) and there are basically no complains
about the fact that the menu bar does not handle window movements.

As a kwin developer I urge you to rethink this patch. This adds
functionality of the window manager to the widget style. It does not
belong there. That's why a window manager is called *manager*. It is for
sure that such changes cause inconsistency between the behaviour of
moving the window decoration and the behaviour of moving the window.
Remember that in case of Ubuntu you have to serve two different window
managers (Compiz+Metacity). Kubuntu and Xubuntu have a different one as
well. It is IMHO impossible to mimic the behaviour of all window
managers and inconsistency in moving can be a serious problem for
handicaped people.

2009-09-03 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Yes I know that there is the option. In fact I think it would be fine to
keep the option but to uncheck the option by default. As it is now
(using Kubuntu with KPackageKit) each time I want to
install/uninstall/update a package I have to uncheck the option
manually.

And many users are just not aware that they have to "opt-out". I'm an
active supporter in the KDE section of the German ubuntuusers forum and
there more than once people asked why they don't have to enter their
password any more.

[Bug 423877] [NEW] Please drop patch kubuntu_10_turn_on_kwin_compositing.diff

2009-09-03 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

The patch dates back to a time when kwin did not have a selftest for
compositing yet. Nowadays it's completely unneeded as:
1. kwin has a self check to test if compositing is working, if not compositing
is automagically disabled
2. kwin has a whitelist for some hardware. If the hardware is listed the self
check is executed. If the hardware is not listed, the compositing self check
can be enforced by the user by enabling it in the desktop effects kcm.
3. The fact that a card (or a driver) works with Compiz does not say anything
about it working in kwin. Unfortunatelly there is still external breakage (this
shouldn't be an issue in stable releases though).
4. If there is an error in kwin's whitelist, the whitelist should be fixed
instead of using a somewhat other whitelist. (Changing the whitelist is rather
simple and we have done it for minor releases)
5. The patch doesn't work anyway: it will only be used for drivers which are
not "intel", "nvidia", "radeon", "fglrx"
Personally I doubt there are anymore vendors which can provide a decent
compositing experience. For SGI & Co. it's better to keep it turned off.

If you get rid of the patch you can as well remove the strange
dependency to compiz-wrapper and you are closer to the upstream package.

If you still think that kwin's whitelist is suboptimal it would be the
better choice to just enable kwin's compositing by default in kubuntu-
default-settings. That way the self-check will be used in each startup
and compositing will be activated for systems where it works. That is
probably more reliable than the current patch. Nevertheless I think the
Upstream default is really the best choice.

[Bug 423834] [NEW] Discussable Implicit Authorizations for some actions

2009-09-03 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

For PackageKit there are some Implizit Authorizations for active console
which I considere as wrong and even dangerous. That are actions where
"Admin Authentication (keep indefinately)" is used. I considere this as
dangerous as if once applied a user at the system and active console
will be able to performe that action. That is I could never allow
someone else to use my computer.

That even is a break with the "normal" sudo concept where the
authentication can easily be revoked and is limited to a very short
timespan.

I think it should use "Admin Authentication". The most important actions where
it should be changed are:
 * org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-sources-con...
 * org.freedesktop.packagekit.package-install
 * org.freedesktop.packagekit.package-remove
 * org.freedesktop.packagekit.system-update

[Bug 390189] Re: Kde shutdown dialog is delayed when compositing enabled

2009-06-28 Thread Martin Gräßlin
To be precise: the fade animation takes exactly two seconds. But it does
not "delay" the shutdown dialog as the title of this bug reports says.
It is just an animation shown when the shutdown dialog is shown.

Making it configurable would be a simple task, but I'm not sure if this
needs a config dialog. As I doubt that users know that the fade during
logout is done by kwin effects I fear they would not find the config
dialog.

[Bug 354583] [NEW] Authorization dialog is borderless

2009-04-03 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

The authorization dialog is displayed borderless. This is a break with
all other applications asking for a password, if it is just kwallet or
kdesudo.

To the user it looks like the dialog is set on top of all other
applications and that he has to enter the password, now. But that's just
not true. The window is managed and has not grabbed the Keyboard. So
it's still possible to change the window and it's still possible that
the focus is stolen, which is given the way the window looks like a real
danger.

Please remove the inconsitency to other password dialogs and add the window
border.
Or do it probably: hide it from task applet, set keep above, grab the keyboard,

I'm not totally sure, but I think you have to set the number of desktops

[Bug 350225] [NEW] [Jaunty] Revert patch which adds polkit-kde-manager to dimscreen for administration mode

2009-03-28 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

Please revert the patch which adds polkit-kde-manager to the dimscreen

is a known upstream bug and has been fixed for 4.3, but can't be
backported to 4.2 (see http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=183046)

The patch added the following line to
kdebase/workspace/kwin/effects/dimscreen.cpp:

[Bug 283100] Re: powertop shows kwin generating lots of wakeups (intrepid, kde4)

2009-01-05 Thread Martin Gräßlin
The problem of too many wakeups is solved in KDE 4.2 being released this
month. KWin will be idle and don't wake up if nothing has to be painted.
I just did the test and KWin is at about 8 wakeups per second when being
idle.

Nevertheless my nvidia binary blob is still responsible for 60 wakeups
per second when compositing is enabled. I have no idea if this can be
improved (I guess no) and I don't know if this is the same for other
drivers.

Please note that the fps effect will destroy performance tests as kwin
can't idle if fps effect is activated.

[Bug 310228] [NEW] patch 107_fedora_dont_backfill_bg_none.patch causes video garbage in KDE 4

2008-12-21 Thread Martin Gräßlin
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 254468 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/254468

Public bug reported:

As discovered in KDE bug 170462
(http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=170462) the patch
107_fedora_dont_backfill_bg_none.patch to xserver is the cause for the
video garbage in KDE 4. As written in comment #44 building xserver
without this patch solves the problem of video garbage. The video
garbage does only occur on distributions using this patch. That is
Fedora und Ubuntu. Other distributions like Debian and openSuSE are not
affected.

Please note that this bug is a hughe problem for Upstream KDE. It has
many votes and the bug is destroying a lot of the KDE experience. Please
provide an update without this patch to provide a good KDE experience to
all KDE users.

[Bug 298307] Re: windows automatically maximize and lack decoration when minimized

2008-11-15 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Are you sure that you are not running by chance Compiz? I have never
seen the problem of missing window decorations in KWin but it is a
problem I know from Compiz. At least my experience is that if KWin does
not show the decorations then KWin crashed and you are not able to
change focus, etc. With Compiz it is still possible to change focus if
there are no decorations.

[Bug 295534] [NEW] Please provide cmake 2.6.2 in intrepid backports

Starting from next monday (10th of November 2008) cmake 2.6.2 is
required to build KDE trunk, but not yet available for Intrepid. There's
a package available for Jaunty. So could you please provide the package

[Bug 291532] [NEW] Cover- and Boxswitch effect enabled by default

2008-10-31 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-window-manager

I installed Kubuntu 8.10 on a new system yesterday and noticed that
cover- and boxswitch are enabled by default and it looks a little bit
weird. It adds transparency to all windows except the front window and
that does not look nice as well as boxswitch is painted on top of the
front window.

As KDE default is boxswitch I guess that you want to have coverswitch as the
default window switcher. In that case you have to set in
kwin/effects/boxswitch.desktop
X-KDE-PluginInfo-EnabledByDefault=false

And you should remove in kwin/kcmkwin/compositing/main.cpp in method
KWinCompositingConfig::loadGeneralTab() and
KWinCompositingConfig::saveGeneralTab() the default loading of boxswitch
for "Improved window management" or replace it by coverswitch.

[Bug 281634] [NEW] [Intrepid] Adept: Reboot notification is displayed before all packages are installed

2008-10-11 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

I don't think it is a real big issue, but I just updated a bunch of
packages including a new kernel image with adept updater. Of course I
received the "reboot system required". It appeared in the moment when
the kernel image got installed. In this case it was when about 50 % of
the packages were installed and installing continued for about 1 to 2
minutes.

I don't know what it would mean for the user, if he receives the message
and does what he would have done in the "other" os: reboot the computer
immediately. He would have cancelled the update of the remaining
packages, in the worst case in a state requiring to go to the console
and do a "sudo dpkg --configure -a". That would be a very bad user
experience.

My suggestion is that the reboot notification is shown after all
packages are installed not during installing the packages. That is in
the moment adept updater shows the finished message.

Please include the taskbar thumbnail effect in KWin compositing again.
It has been removed from CMakeList some days before branching KDE 4.1

[Bug 278102] Re: [Intrepid] Shaders for cylinder and sphere effects are not installed

2008-10-05 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Shader files are not binary - they are text only.

Actually Kubuntu includes already some shader files. Take a look at
/usr/share/kde4/apps/kwin/. Each .vert and .frag file is a shader. You
just have to look where these files come from and include the named
files above in the same package. Or do I see it in a too simple way?

[Bug 278105] Re: [Intrepid] Cube cap image is missing

2008-10-04 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Well I thought about it and decided: no. In the effect I need it as a
GLTexture. Converting pngs or jpegs to textures is quite easy.
Converting svgs would be much more complicated. As the texture is
generated when the cube is opened for the first time I feared that
generating a texture from svg would take too much time resulting in just
a black, not responding screen. The advantages of svg is not so
important in that case as you never know the exact sice of the caps (you
can zoom the cube).

[Bug 278068] [NEW] [Intrepid] KCM compositing offers empty dropdown to select effect for desktop switching

2008-10-04 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

The KCM module to configure the desktop effects contains a dropdown
"Effect for desktop switching", but the dropdown box contains only "No
effect".

This dropdown box is backported from trunk and should contain effects
"Cube" and "Slide". These effects are not backported that's why the
dropdown is empty. Btw no effect is also wrong, as the 4.1 desktop grid
effect is included which does not allow to deactivate the effect on
change of desktops.

I have attached a screenshot of the KCM module

Easiest solution: remove the dropdown.

[Bug 224307] [NEW] Firefox does not load encrypted page if the certificate is not trusted

2008-04-29 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Firefox has a very strange behaviour if you visit a https site which
uses self-signed or untrusted certificates.

Here the error:
"Secure Connection Failed
mail.martin-graesslin.com uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is not trusted.
The certificate is not valid for any server names.
(Error code: sec_error_untrusted_issuer)
* This could be a problem with the server's configuration, or it could be
someone trying to impersonate the server.
* If you have connected to this server successfully in the past, the error
may be temporary, and you can try again later."

IMHO this behaviour is wrong. Firefox should load the page nevertheless.
Authentification is not the most important feature of TLS, but
encryption.

Many university pages are encrypted with not "trusted" certificates. And
this is quite OK. Why should a university spend money for a "real"
certificate. Personally I trust my university more than for example
Verisign.

For a user who does not know about how TLS encryption works the page is
completely wrong. He will not know and understand that the webpage uses
an "untrusted" certificate, but will think that there is some real
problem.

Please change the behaviour. I do not have any problem with a warning as
it used to be in Firefox 2, but not loading at all is just - well let's
say stupid.

[Bug 224300] [NEW] Warranty voids if I do changes in about:config in Firefox?

"This might void your warranty!

Does this really represent the opinion of Canonical/Ubuntu? It sound

I have a problem with cryptsetup since kernel update to
2.6.24-14-generic.

First I have to describe my setup:
I have a completely encrypted filesystem with cryptsetup. And there is a script
wich mounts my usb key and reads the passphrase for the / partition from a file
on the usb key.

Since the upgrade to 2.6.24-14-generic I have the problem that the
script cannot mount the usb key so cryptsetup fails and I can't start
the system. But I can see that the script is executed. So during
creation of the initial ramdisk everything seems to work fine. With
2.6.24-12-generic I have no problems. Script is working correctly.

Do you have any idea what could be the problem? Is it possible that the
/dev/sd* changed with this update? Or is perhaps a module renamed which
I need to access the usb key?

If you need any more information, pls ask. I kindly attach all the
config files, scripts which are used in this setup.

[Bug 211331] [NEW] [Hardy] error when importing a style in kopete-kde4

2008-04-03 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kopete-kde4

I tried to install a new style in kopete-kde4. I received an error message
saying something like "folder does not exist".
I manually created the folder "~/.kde4/share/apps/kopete/styles", after that
importing the style succeeded. But I had to restart kopete to see the new style
listed.

[Bug 208724] [NEW] Colored oxygen window decoration

2008-03-29 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kwin-kde4

This bug report is related to KDE bug 152030
(http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=152030)
Actually the oxygen window decoration cannot be colored so it is hardly
possible to differentiate between active and inactive windows. Lubos Lunak
wrote a patch (http://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=23991&action=view) to
change this, but it has not made it into svn yet and so it is not included in
KDE 4.0.3.

Personally I think the patch is a good idea and should also be included
in the Kubuntu packages (in comment #62 it is stated that the patch will
make it into the next openSuSE packages).

So please include the patch in your 4.0.3 packages if possible and if
you think this would increase the usability.

[Bug 204558] [NEW] No "install new language" button in language kcm module

2008-03-21 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: systemsettings-kde4

In the KDE 3 version of systemsettings there was a button "install new
language" in the kcm module language which started "qt-language-selector
--mode install" (see "kcmshelll language"). This button is missing in
the KDE 4 version of the same kcm module (see "kcmshell4 language").

So there is no easy way to install another language in KDE 4. So please
either add the button or add an entry to K-Menu for starting qt-
language-selector (as it used to be in previous versions).

[Bug 203905] [NEW] [Hardy] old display kcm modulue after upgrade from gutsy

2008-03-19 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: systemsettings-kde4

I installed a fresh Hardy on my laptop and did an upgrade on my desktop
system. I noticed that there seems to be a new display kcm module on the
fresh install. But on the system I upgraded there is still the old
display module shown in systemsettings. I think it is only the "size and
orientation" part.

[Bug 203334] Re: KDE4 is somehow "slow" after upgrade to hardy

2008-03-18 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Yes it seems that removing scim-bridge-agent, scim-bridge-agent-qt and
scim-bridge-agent-qt4 solved the problem. Apps are starting fast again
and the error messages in the comment above are not shown again.

A friend of mine had the same problem and on his system removing those
packages solved the problem, too.

[Bug 203334] Re: KDE4 is somehow "slow" after upgrade to hardy

2008-03-18 Thread Martin Gräßlin
I just tested around a little bit:
If I start a KDE 4 application from a konsole I see the following error
messages:
Cannot establish the socket connection...
Failed to initialize scim
Failed to allocate the agent. Exitting...
Cannot establish the socket connection...
Failed to initialize scim
Failed to allocate the agent. Exitting...
Failed to invoking the agent: No such file or directory
Cannot launch the agent
The messenger is now down

I also noticed that a programm called scim-bridge appears in top as soon
as I start an application and that the application does not do anything
(the "slow" thing) as long as scim-bridge is running. I don't know what
scim-bridge does and I don't know if this is really related, but somehow
I guess so ;-)

I'll try to remove scim-bridge to see if this solves the problem.

After the upgrade to hardy today my KDE 4 is much slower. This only
happens if something is loaded, which has not been loaded yet. E.g.

I had no problems with this when I used gutsy and KDE 4.

[Bug 196627] [NEW] ksudoku is not placed into any games submenu

2008-02-28 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ksudoku-kde4

The game ksudoku appears directly in the games menu while all other
kdegames are sorted into a submenu. The .desktop file of ksudoku tells
that it is a "LogicGame". AFAIK there is no other LogicGame in kdegames.
There is no .directory for kde-games-logic in /usr/lib/kde4/share
/desktop-directories

So please change the category for ksudoku or add the logic games
directory as it is quite strange that only one game is not sorted into
any category.

sorry for forgetting these important facts:

Just to note: My Xorg configs are correct. At the moment I'm running
compositing effects with build from trunk ;-)

[Bug 189501] [NEW] KWin compositing not working in 4.0.1

2008-02-06 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kwin-kde4

After update to 4.0.1 compositing is not working in kwin. Each time I
try to enable compositing kwin crashes. It used to work in 4.0.0 and it
works with my own compiled version from svn trunk.

Here the backtrace:

[Bug 189500] [NEW] erorr in /etc/init.d/kdm-kde4

2008-02-06 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdm-kde4

Just switched to kde-kde4 in 4.0.1. When trying to start /etc/init.d
/kdm-kde4 I receive the error that genkdmconf-kde4 does not exists. And
there is no such file in /usr/bin but there is a genkdmconf in
/usr/lib/kde4/bin

I changed my /etc/init.d/kdm-kde4 to have /usr/lib/kde4/bin in the PATH
and use genkdmconf instead of genkdmconf-kde4. But I think it would be
better to have the wrapper script in /usr/bin...

I don't understand it, but I could not switch back to kdm 3.5. I tried
dpkg-reconfigure kdm and dpkg-reconfigure kdm-kde4. I selected kdm in
both, but every time I tried to use /etc/init.d/kdm restart I received a
"kdm is not the default display manager". Really strange.

[Bug 184491] Re: Cannot get admin privileges in KDE4.0 System settings (Date/Time, Login Manager)

2008-01-20 Thread Martin Gräßlin
I can confirm this bug. Same situation for me. Running "kdesu
systemsettings" opens the KDE 3 version of systemsettings. So no chance
to configure there. Only chance is to run
"/usr/lib/kde4/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu /usr/lib/kde4/bin/systemsettings"
which opens the new systemsettings with root priviledges. So it is
possible to change "Date/Time" or "Login Manager".

[Bug 184544] apt kio-slave missing in konqueror-kde4

The "apt:/" kio-slave is missing in konqueror-kde4. If I try to use it I

[Bug 184379] localization in KDE 4 does not work any more

2008-01-19 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-kde4

Localization in complete KDE 4 does not work any more. It used to work
till today. I updated the packages in PPA repository (amd64) and
installed kdm-kde4 today. Localization stored in the .desktop files is
still working. But none of the LC_MESSAGES seems to work. I tried to
reinstall kde-l10n-de but did not help.

When I try to change locale in systemsettings, "Updating system
configuration" quits after about 15 % without any error message.

[Bug 183800] Re: cannot lock KDE 4 desktop

2008-01-19 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Google solved the problem. You have to install the package kdm-kde4 to
have the greeter plugin configured. I installed this package and now I
can lock the screen.

As this is some issue, perhaps add a dependency in kdebase-workspace to
kdm-kde4?

Actually I have installed the named one. But problem existed before I
installed this package. I used RC2 and RC1 before. Perhaps some relict
from there?

If you know the file which configures the greeter plugin I will take a
look at it ;-)

[Bug 183800] cannot lock KDE 4 desktop

2008-01-17 Thread Martin Gräßlin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-kde4

If I try to lock the desktop in Plasma (KDE 4 packages from PPA, amd64)
I receive an error message telling me something like there is no

[Bug 72850] Re: CPU does not reduce speed since update to Edgy

It's a long time ago. As far as I remember the problem was solved with a
kernel update. But I do not remember how long it took until the problem
was solved or which version solved the problem. It seems to me that I
used an own compiled kernel at that time and I don't know when I
switched back to the standard ubuntu kernel. But I think I switched
back before feisty was released.

[Bug 151865] Re: Qt Designer Plugin contained in the libqtjambi-dev package does not work

2007-10-23 Thread Martin Gräßlin
I confirm that this problem exists. But somehow I got it running - nevertheless
error messages appeared, but I could edit jui files.
I used the following environment variables:
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/jni/
export CLASSPATH=/usr/share/java/qtjambi.jar
export JAVADIR=/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-icedtea/
export QT_PLUGIN_PATH=/usr/lib/qt4/plugins/qtjambi/

and I started /usr/bin/designer-qt4

The following error message appeared in this scenario:
CustomWidgetManager: plugin path doesn't exist:

If I remove the /qtjambi/ from QT_PLUGIN_PATH, I receive the following stack
