[Bug 1158181] [NEW] Kubuntu uses two virtual desktops as a default
Public bug reported: Kubuntu Raring uses two virtual desktops as a default. This is a derivation from upstream which has only one virtual desktop as default. I don't want to discuss pro and cons of one vs. two virtual desktops by default, but the current derivation has some severe usability issues. For example there is no pager, so a user has no hint that there are virtual desktops at all. Scrolling on the desktop background switches the desktop. This is extremely annoying for an experienced user such as me, because my windows just went away without any feedback. If I would imagine that I'm a normal user having no clue about virtual desktop I would have been completely lost. The unwanted desktop switch happened several times to me, due to the usage of a touchpad. My recommendation would be to remove the derivation in the defaults and go for one virtual desktop. Upstream has configured the defaults to make it most easy for "normal" users who are not familiar with virtual desktops. But at the same time it is prepared for experienced users by having this switch on desktop by wheel on desktop as a default. Another option would be to re-add the pager. ** Affects: kde-workspace (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1158181 Title: Kubuntu uses two virtual desktops as a default To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kde-workspace/+bug/1158181/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 532421] Re: New Lucid theme has merged menubar and metacity. Makes it difficult to grab the right area to move windows
I just want to mention, that the kwin quick tiling feature is enabled by default in KDE SC 4.4 (Kubuntu Lucid) both on update and fresh install. This change in the GTK Style will cause differences between the behaviour of the application and the window manager. Please note that in kwin there is a drag distance respecting the KDE wide drag settings. Those settings are not and will not be honoured by the change in the GTK Style. Please also note that KDE shipps merged title and menu bars since 4.0 (Intrepid in case of Ubuntu) and there are basically no complains about the fact that the menu bar does not handle window movements. As a kwin developer I urge you to rethink this patch. This adds functionality of the window manager to the widget style. It does not belong there. That's why a window manager is called *manager*. It is for sure that such changes cause inconsistency between the behaviour of moving the window decoration and the behaviour of moving the window. Remember that in case of Ubuntu you have to serve two different window managers (Compiz+Metacity). Kubuntu and Xubuntu have a different one as well. It is IMHO impossible to mimic the behaviour of all window managers and inconsistency in moving can be a serious problem for handicaped people. -- New Lucid theme has merged menubar and metacity. [Bug 423877] [NEW] Please drop patch kubuntu_10_turn_on_kwin_compositing.diff
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace The patch dates back to a time when kwin did not have a selftest for compositing yet. Nowadays it's completely unneeded as: 1. kwin has a self check to test if compositing is working, if not compositing is automagically disabled 2. kwin has a whitelist for some hardware. If the hardware is listed the self check is executed. If the hardware is not listed, the compositing self check can be enforced by the user by enabling it in the desktop effects kcm. 3. The fact that a card (or a driver) works with Compiz does not say anything about it working in kwin. Unfortunatelly there is still external breakage (this shouldn't be an issue in stable releases though). 4. If there is an error in kwin's whitelist, the whitelist should be fixed instead of using a somewhat other whitelist. (Changing the whitelist is rather simple and we have done it for minor releases) 5. The patch doesn't work anyway: it will only be used for drivers which are not "intel", "nvidia", "radeon", "fglrx" Personally I doubt there are anymore vendors which can provide a decent compositing experience. For SGI & Co. it's better to keep it turned off. If you get rid of the patch you can as well remove the strange dependency to compiz-wrapper and you are closer to the upstream package. If you still think that kwin's whitelist is suboptimal it would be the better choice to just enable kwin's compositing by default in kubuntu- default-settings. That way the self-check will be used in each startup and compositing will be activated for systems where it works. That is probably more reliable than the current patch. Nevertheless I think the Upstream default is really the best choice. ** Affects: kdebase-workspace (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Please drop patch kubuntu_10_turn_on_kwin_compositing.diff https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/423877 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdebase-workspace in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 281634] [NEW] [Intrepid] Adept: Reboot notification is displayed before all packages are installed
Public bug reported: I don't think it is a real big issue, but I just updated a bunch of packages including a new kernel image with adept updater. Of course I received the "reboot system required". It appeared in the moment when the kernel image got installed. In this case it was when about 50 % of the packages were installed and installing continued for about 1 to 2 minutes. I don't know what it would mean for the user, if he receives the message and does what he would have done in the "other" os: reboot the computer immediately. He would have cancelled the update of the remaining packages, in the worst case in a state requiring to go to the console and do a "sudo dpkg --configure -a". That would be a very bad user experience. My suggestion is that the reboot notification is shown after all packages are installed not during installing the packages. That is in the moment adept updater shows the finished message. ** Affects: adept (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [Intrepid] Adept: Reboot notification is displayed before all packages are installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/281634 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to adept in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

Shader files are not binary - they are text only. Actually Kubuntu includes already some shader files. Take a look at /usr/share/kde4/apps/kwin/. Each .vert and .frag file is a shader. [Bug 278105] Re: [Intrepid] Cube cap image is missing
Well I thought about it and decided: no. In the effect I need it as a GLTexture. Converting pngs or jpegs to textures is quite easy. Converting svgs would be much more complicated. As the texture is generated when the cube is opened for the first time I feared that generating a texture from svg would take too much time resulting in just a black, not responding screen. [Bug 224307] [NEW] Firefox does not load encrypted page if the certificate is not trusted
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox-3.0 Firefox has a very strange behaviour if you visit a https site which uses self-signed or untrusted certificates. Here the error: "Secure Connection Failed mail.martin-graesslin.com uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is not trusted. The certificate is not valid for any server names. (Error code: sec_error_untrusted_issuer) * This could be a problem with the server's configuration, or it could be someone trying to impersonate the server. * If you have connected to this server successfully in the past, the error may be temporary, and you can try again later." IMHO this behaviour is wrong. Firefox should load the page nevertheless. Authentification is not the most important feature of TLS, but encryption. Many university pages are encrypted with not "trusted" certificates. And this is quite OK. Why should a university spend money for a "real" certificate. Personally I trust my university more than for example Verisign. For a user who does not know about how TLS encryption works the page is completely wrong. He will not know and understand that the webpage uses an "untrusted" certificate, but will think that there is some real problem. Please change the behaviour. I do not have any problem with a warning as it used to be in Firefox 2, but not loading at all is just - well let's say stupid. ** Affects: firefox-3.0 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Firefox does not load encrypted page if the certificate is not trusted https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/224307 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

When I try to change locale in systemsettings, "Updating system configuration" quits after about 15 % without any error message. ** Affects: kdebase-kde4 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- localization in KDE 4 does not work any more https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/184379 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 183800] Re: cannot lock KDE 4 desktop
Google solved the problem. You have to install the package kdm-kde4 to have the greeter plugin configured. I installed this package and now I can lock the screen. As this is some issue, perhaps add a dependency in kdebase-workspace to kdm-kde4? -- cannot lock KDE 4 desktop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/183800 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 183800] Re: cannot lock KDE 4 desktop
Actually I have installed the named one. But problem existed before I installed this package. I used RC2 and RC1 before. Perhaps some relict from there? If you know the file which configures the greeter plugin I will take a look at it ;-) -- cannot lock KDE 4 desktop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/183800 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 183800] cannot lock KDE 4 desktop
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kdebase-kde4 If I try to lock the desktop in Plasma (KDE 4 packages from PPA, amd64) I receive an error message telling me something like there is no appropriate greeter plugin configured and that unlocking would be impossible and because of that the desktop will not be locked. For me this is a no-go bug for switching to KDE 4. ** Affects: kdebase-kde4 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- cannot lock KDE 4 desktop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/183800 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 182215] Re: kde4 Kopete - Jabber SSL Error
I can confirm this bug. It is not only in kopete, but also konqueror is missing SSL/TLS support. It seems to me that the packages were compiled without openssl support. [Bug 72850] Re: CPU does not reduce speed since update to Edgy
It's a long time ago. As far as I remember the problem was solved with a kernel update. But I do not remember how long it took until the problem was solved or which version solved the problem. It seems to me that I used an own compiled kernel at that time and I don't know when I switched back to the standard ubuntu kernel. [Bug 149283] Re: Kubuntu KDE splash artwork doesn't get updated
I can confirm this bug. The Background.png symlink in /usr/share/apps/ksplash/Themes/ points to the new wallpaper. But Preview.png is the old one and the description in Theme.rc is still "Kubuntu Edgy Splash". It looks quite strange having the new wallpaper in KDM login and then the old one.
