[Bug 1754458] Re: nm-applet symbol not displayed on mate (18.04)

2018-05-30 Thread Mike Fairbank
Yes I found this bug too. The bug arose after I did a clean full
install of Mate 18.04LTS, but I re-used my old Mate 16.04 home
partition. So it's probably confused by my old style configuration files
which were imported from Mate16.04 to Mate 18.04.

The workaround of using Mate Tweak to switch the panel style to
something else and then back to Traditional fixed the problem for me.

[Bug 156201] Re: gedit handles opening big files badly

2012-01-24 Thread Mike Fairbank
I have noticed this bug. I have a 5MB document with very long lines.
Each line is approximately a million characters wide.

If you view it with word wrap OFF then the computer becomes very
unresponsive. Scrolling the scrollbars particularly hangs the computer
for a long time.

I'm on gedit 2.30.4. I'm using a 15GB machine so manipulating a 5MB
text file should not be causing it to sweat.

I've attached an example file that causes the problem. Make sure you
view it with text wrap off.

[Bug 529072] Re: it is difficult to edit text in text fields - keyboard is ignored a lot

2011-10-04 Thread Mike Fairbank
Yes I agree. Hover-over fixes this problem for me. So this is not a
bug, it is a feature. Thanks for your help. Sorry I needed help with
something so basic. But on the other hand, this is a very strange 80s
user interface, so much so that not many people in the twenty first
century will figure this usage out!

[Bug 260492] Re: opening a directory using an application change associations incorrectly

2011-04-10 Thread Mike Fairbank
I have just experienced these exact symptoms on my upto date version of
Ubuntu 10.10.

Any folder I opened from the places would immediately cause the entire
contents of that folder to be opened by media player.

I fixed the problem afterwards by editing
.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list as someone above recommended.

However it caused further dodgy problems on my system: The update
manager popped up and thought it was doing a partial upgrade. Update
manager also prompted me to do sudo apt-get install -f and sudo dpkg
--configure -a to clear things up, which worked eventually.

I would recommended that this bug be rated more seriously. It's still
present in ubuntu 10.10.

Leading up to my experience of this bug, I had been trying to open a
corrupted file in both VLC and Media Player, so maybe that was the
cause?

Good luck with fixing it.

[Bug 513482] Re: a java program that causes X windows to hang

2011-02-03 Thread Mike Fairbank
I don't know why this bug has been re-opened. The Xorg-server
developers analysed this bug carefully and diagnosed it as Java
misbehaving. I raised this bug and as far as I'm concerned it's been
passed on to the responsible software owner- which in this case is
Oracle's Java.

Thanks. I've raised these upstream at

I've removed point 2 as you say it's fixed already.

It is a real shame scientific mode is being removed :( More useful
than the financial functions for me.

Thanks.

[Bug 591892] [NEW] ln cosh 99999999 causes program to hang for long time / indefinitely

2010-06-09 Thread Mike Fairbank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcalctool

In scientific display mode, enter ln cosh . This causes the
program to hang for a long time / indefinitely. During this hang, the
calculator is unable to redraw itself and does not respond. I waited 5
minutes but got no response so terminated the application.

I am using gcalctool 5.28.2

Thanks.

[Bug 591896] [NEW] various user interface issues

2010-06-09 Thread Mike Fairbank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcalctool

I am using gcalctool 5.28.2

Here are some user interface suggestions:
1. When in scientific display mode, pressing the lower case L key brings in
an obscure financial function. I think financial function shortcuts should be
disabled in scientific display mode. I was hoping I could just type ln in to
get the ln function.
2. There is no item on the help menu to report a problem.

Less importantly:
3. It would be good if there was an Ans button so you could type Ans+Ans^2
which would act on the previous answer.
4. A go back to last edit line button (like cursor up and down goes through
the history in a bash prompt)
5. It would be good if the equals key was in the bottom right like on most
physical scientific calculators.

Thanks for producing the application. Apologies if this is an
inappropriate bug report.

2010-06-09 Thread Mike Fairbank
Thanks Marcel. Yes it looks like this is a duplicate of the bug you
cite (347089). It's good that it got the right answer in the end!
However it would be better if there was a way to escape to cancel the
long calculation, and the window redrawing did not stall during the
calculation.

There is not much issue now.

The title of this bug is totally wrong - you are right, I didn't realise

The only issue is the message which occurs when you type rhythmbox at

[Bug 512518] Re: Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD hangs X soon after gnome is displayed

2010-04-27 Thread Mike Fairbank
I've enabled apport permanently to generate crash reports.

I've just recovered a crash report saved by apport into /var/crash. The
file is attached.

This crash report was detected directly after an X-freeze, shortly after
the next restart. The X-freeze on this occasion happened while trying
to log on (I was still typing in the password to log on when it froze).

I hope this is relevant / helps.

[Bug 512518] Re: Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD hangs X soon after gnome is displayed

2010-04-26 Thread Mike Fairbank
I've just made a proper install of ubuntu onto a dual boot partition of
my harddrive. This will enable me to apply upgrades more easily.

So I've done that, and then run it (under acpi=off, since that's all I
can do to prevent this problem), and fetched all the latest ubuntu
updates for Karmic. This has brought the kernel version upto 2.6.31-20
(generic), however that does not fix my problem - I still have to run
under acpi=off.

Acpi=off makes the computer work well, and completely prevents this bug,
but it seems to knock out certain functionality such as wireless
internet and sound, so it's not a long-term solution for me.

I would welcome any advice or suggestions.

2010-04-25 Thread Mike Fairbank
We were wondering if this is still an issue?

Thanks. Yes, I'm actively following progress on this bug and still
hoping for a fix.

Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD
images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

Ok I've burnt and tried the latest 32-bit ubunu-10.4 release candidate
but it won't boot at all. You get the animated ubuntu logo, but then
the screen goes black and nothing happens- no error message just a hang
in the boot up process.

I'll try the 10.4 release again when it comes out, and I'll try
following the published advice on X hanging with 10.4.

 apport-collect -p linux 512518

I'll try and do this somehow and will get back to you if I can - it's
difficult to get onto ubuntu at all using any live cd due to this bug.
However I've already given most of the relevant files attached above
haven't I?

test the latest upstream kernel available

I'll try to...

[Bug 529072] Re: it is difficult to edit text in text fields - keyboard is ignored a lot

2010-04-17 Thread Mike Fairbank
I've tested it under KDE and the bug is still there.

This bug is making xfig so difficult to work with that I've switched to
using Inkscape. That is an effective enough work-around for me, and
accept that xfig's user interface is out of date and broken.

[Bug 538673] [NEW] tracker-extract seems to briefly consume 1.5GB memory and slow computer right down

2010-03-14 Thread Mike Fairbank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tracker

In normal operation of computer, very occasionally computer suddenly
slows right down for about 45 seconds - mousepointer is very slow to
respond to movement, and windows are too slow to respond to clicks.

This has been hard to identify the cause because the computer is so slow
to respond it's hard to get system monitor opened to see the offending
process. Anyway I've finally managed to view system-monitor within the
45 seconds, and it seems to be tracker-extract program that is
responsible, that was consuming over 1.5GB of RAM on my machine. It was
hard to see though because the 45 seconds finished almost as soon as I'd
viewed it, so it very quickly disappeared from the top of the process
list when ranked by memory usage.

So is tracker-extract the offending process? Can it be made a little
less hungry of Memory (+ CPU) please?

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic) 64 bit version on a 2.9GB machine.

[Bug 529072] [NEW] it is difficult to edit text in text fields - keyboard is ignored a lot

2010-02-27 Thread Mike Fairbank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfig

A lot of text fields don't easily allow keyboard editing.

For example, if you open a fresh instance of xfig, and choose
file:export then a window appears. 2 editable text fields in this
window are Output file and filename mask. Click in these with the
mouse pointer to give them focus. Start typing into them. Use the
cursor left and right keys and delete keys and space-bar on the keyboard
to edit what you are typing. Use the mouse pointer to click into the
other editable field and do the same there. Keep doing it, and often
you notice immediately after pressing the cursor keys or spacebar you
can immediately no longer type letters, or delete lettors, or cursor
left and right within that editable field.

The bug doesn't happen every time, but for me it does about 50% of the
time I try to edit text fields, so please play around with this to try
to reproduce this error. If I try this enough I can get the bug to
occur every time (I only need to open xfig once, and I only need to open
the file:export window once, but I do need to click and edit between
these two editable fields quite a bit to guarantee reproducing the bug).

This affects many fields in xfig, e.g. the way you edit objects in
your fig means you have a lot of edit fields to use and change. It
makes it really hard to get any work done. I have to try editing
everything 4 or 5 times before it works.

I found this bug was present too on my old version of Ubuntu.

Description:Ubuntu 9.10

[Bug 529072] Re: it is difficult to edit text in text fields - keyboard is ignored a lot

2010-02-27 Thread Mike Fairbank
Note: I've just found this section of the FAQ at
http://xfig.org/userman/frm_faq.html

There it says:

I cannot type anything into the popup dialogs in xfig when I use the
fvwm window manager

POSSIBLE CAUSE AND SOLUTION:
There have been reports of this problem when using the fvwm window manager,
possibly under Cygwin. Try mwm or twm or KDE.

Is this relevant?

[Bug 513482] Re: a java program that causes X windows to hang

2010-02-21 Thread Mike Fairbank
This bug is reproducible on a Linux distro called crux
(http://www.crux.nu) with a lightweight window manager named IceWM.

So this bug is nothing to do with Ubuntu or Gnome.

Please can it be pushed upstream to X11 or/and java.

[Bug 513482] Re: a java program that causes X windows to hang

2010-02-20 Thread Mike Fairbank
Please can the this importance of this bug be raised to severe,
because that what a reproducible x-windows total crash is?

Please can it then be pushed upstream to x-windows? Whether it is java
that is causing X-windows to crash or not, X-windows should handle the
error more gracefully than this, so there is at least an enhancement
that could be done to X-windows here, and possibly to java too.

My system occasionally crashes with symptoms like this (definitely not
while using the java debugger, but I might have had some java
applications running in the background, I'm not sure), so I hope fixing
this bug will make my linux experience generally more robust.

[Bug 513482] Re: a java program that causes X windows to hang

2010-02-01 Thread Mike Fairbank
Attached is a smaller version of the java code that causes the crash.
Hopefully that will make it easier to analyse. I don't think there's
much point in going any smaller, since the cause of the bug is probably
in X11/Gnome/Java and the size of the code is insignificant to those
packages, but I can shrink it further if someone asks me.

It is the same instructions to cause the bug, i.e. put the breakpoint on
line src.MainClass:45 and run it in gdb as before.

After the crash, alt+ctrl+f1 works, if that helps with system recovery.

[Bug 512518] Re: Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD hangs X soon after gnome is displayed

2010-01-28 Thread Mike Fairbank
Ok thanks. I've tried those. Here are the results:

noapic: no difference (still hangs)
acpi=off:  it works!
noalpic: was worse (mouse pointer doesn't even move)

Thanks for that suggestion.

So I can no access the computer + OS fully using acpi=off. Do you
want me to generate more attachments? e.g. via the command ubuntu-bug
-p linux. However that would create an entirely new bug report. So
how do I get those attachments to go onto this bug report?

And what should I do next?

[Bug 513998] [NEW] system test: do you see color bars and static? fails.

2010-01-28 Thread Mike Fairbank

I am running the system test do you see color bars and static? on the

definitely is no coloured bar image.

I am running the Live CD with option acpi=off (that's the only way I can
get ubuntu to run on this hardware without crashing - which I've raised
separately in bug 512518).

[Bug 513482] [NEW] a java program that causes X windows to hang

2010-01-27 Thread Mike Fairbank
Public bug reported:

I have a simple java program that causes X windows / Gnome to hang with
my hardware if you perform a few simple steps.

I'm using 64 bit ubuntu, Linux Kernel 2.6.31-17-generic, with java version
1.6.0_16
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_16-b01)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.2-b01, mixed mode). I've had the
bug happening on older versions of java too (back to 1.6.0_12).

If you want me to submit this bug report to java then let me know, but
this bug doesn't happen on other operating systems with java, so I think
it's possibly a linux/gnome bug.

Here are the steps to reproduce the problem. You need a recent version of java
1.6 installed.
1. unzip the attached folder and cd into it.
2. run the java debugger by typing jdb
3. in the java debugger, type stop at src.MainClass:45
4. in the java debugger, type run src.MainClass

A window should open that displays a drop down item. Change the drop-
down item from A to B. This causes X windows/Gnome to hang. The mouse
pointer still moves but you can't click on anything (i.e. nothing
responds to mouse-clicks).

The java code attached is the minimal code I could create that causes
the problem. It took hours of crashing my OS and rebooting to get it
that far, but it probably can go smaller.

[Bug 512518] Re: Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD hangs X soon after gnome is displayed

2010-01-26 Thread Mike Fairbank
Please note that this bug is about version 9.10 32 bit live CD. The
diagnostic files were all taken from version 9.04 live CD, since this is
the only way I can access that hardware. So the only relevant
information files (out of the 4 attachments above) are those that give
information about the hardware - ignore those attachments that say I am
using ubuntu 9.04.

Summary: Ubuntu 9.04 works fine on this hardware, but ubuntu 9.10 is
broken.

[Bug 512518] [NEW] Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD hangs X soon after gnome is displayed

2010-01-25 Thread Mike Fairbank
Public bug reported:

I've just burnt a Live CD from the Ubuntu.com website today for 32 bit Ubuntu.
I've tried to install it on Live Mode on an Asus Notebook PC (Intel Celeron
Processor, 1.40Ghz, 500MB Ram).

It goes through the boot processes okay, Displays Gnome, and then
crashes almost immediately after trying to open any window. The mouse
pointer still moves, but you can't click on anything (i.e. nothing
responds to mouse-clicks). Ctrl+alt+f1 does nothing.

I've tried installing it in safe graphics mode, but then the boot
sequence doesn't ever finish - it just hangs with a black screen (and no
keyboard response).

Sorry there's so little information here, I can't work out how get into
Ubuntu properly or a terminal to type the commands to generate the usual
attachments for the full bug report.

Thanks.

[Bug 499109] Re: Since upgrading to Karmic, I have to open Rhythmbox twice to get it started

2010-01-23 Thread Mike Fairbank
Ok here's my second attempt at the back trace. This one is much longer.

Hope that helps.

[Bug 499109] Re: Since upgrading to Karmic, I have to open Rhythmbox twice to get it started

2010-01-21 Thread Mike Fairbank
Ok, I've figured out how to get the backtrace. It's attached. I've
partially edited the http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash to
make it clearer on the points I got stuck, but please could you edit it
further to explain how you check if there is a package with a -dbg
suffix in the main Ubuntu repositories.

[Bug 499109] Re: Since upgrading to Karmic, I have to open Rhythmbox twice to get it started

2010-01-20 Thread Mike Fairbank
I'd like to try to help you more but I cannot understand the page
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash.

Here are the problems:
1. It says First, check if there is a package with a -dbg suffix in the main
Ubuntu repositories. These are the debug symbol packages, and are equivalent to
'-dbgsym' described below. You can safely use either one, but not both at
once.

How do I do this? Please will you edit the Wiki to make it clearer.
Aren't the contents of the Ubuntu repositories determined by Ubuntu?

2. It asks me to create a file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ddebs.list, with
5 lines in it. I did this using gedit. So the first line of the file
created starts with echo. Then when I run sudo apt-get update I
get the error message:

E: Type ‘echo’ is not known on line 1 in source list
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/ddebs.list

Thanks. Please will you edit the Wiki to make this clearer so it's easier for
the next person too.

Mike.

[Bug 499109] [NEW] Since upgrading to Karmic, I have to open Rhythmbox twice to get it started

2009-12-21 Thread Mike Fairbank
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Version: Rhythmbox 0.12.5
Ubuntu 9.10 Release:9.10

I have to click on the icon twice to get rythmbox to start. The first
time I click, the mousepointer changes to the animation that shows it is
busy. So it looks just like it's loading. But then nothing opens.

The second time I click on the icon, Rhythmbox opens instantly (no
loading time needed) - as if it's just maximising the window, not
actually loading it from scratch. It then works normally, but is
somethimes then hard to close (it carries on playing music indefinitely
even after closing the window).

This only started happening after upgrading from Ubuntu Jaunty to Ubuntu
Karmic.

Incidentally, if I type rhythmbox from a terminal command line, I get
the following error messages:

rhythmbox

** (rhythmbox:6966): CRITICAL **: atk_object_set_name: assertion `name
!= NULL' failed

[Bug 499109] Re: Since upgrading to Karmic, I have to open Rhythmbox twice to get it started

2009-12-21 Thread Mike Fairbank
Thanks for the reply.

1. Typing rhytmbox from the command line for the first time causes the
error message plus a hang. But then opening via clicking on the icon
opens rhythmbox immediately (but again without any delay).

2. Opening via the icon for the first time does cause rhtyhmbox to appear in
the process list, i.e.
ps aux gives output
mike 2546 2.3 1.5 505340 45952 ?Sl 17:30 0:01 rhythmbox
However if you then type rythmbox at the command line then no error message
appears, and it opens rhythmbox without a hang at the command line.

Hope that helps more...

[Bug 499109] Re: Since upgrading to Karmic, I have to open Rhythmbox twice to get it started

2009-12-21 Thread Mike Fairbank
Okay, I realise this may be a deliberate feature now (apart from the
error message I get from the command line).

1. Clicking on rhytmbox once in the panel at the top of my desktop
causes a second rhthmbox icon to appear on the right of that panel.
Clicking on that second rhythmbox icon opens rhythmbox as I'd expect to
see it. Closing the main rhythmbox window just minimises it onto the
second icon. To close it properly i've found the quit option on the
second rhythmbox icon.

Sorry for wasting your time here. It's changed it's behaviour since
Jaunty so that confused me.

You might still be interested in the error message and hang I get from
typing rythmbox once from the command line though.

Thanks for looking at this. Sorry if I've wasted your time.

Mike.

Re: [Bug 303423] Re: Calculator crashes when you edit number in specific order

2008-11-30 Thread Mike Fairbank
Dear Xavier,
Thanks for the feedback and thanks for looking into it.

I'll raise anything else odd I notice, as an aim to contribute to making
Gnome and Ubuntu better.

Thanks for you own work on the Gnome / Ubuntu product - it is a great
collaborative work.

Best wishes,

Mike Fairbank.

3. Move the editing cursor to the position after the 7
