[Bug 1875475] Re: Unison from Ubuntu 20.04 is incompatible with Unison from Ubuntu 18.04, Windows or Mac OS X

2020-05-22 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
After downgrading and trying the downgraded unison you will only need to
delete the "fs*" files in .unison on your local machine I found out. So
thankfully the sync-state "ar*", was still working well after that.

I didn't actually get a new error though, but the same error. But
thankfully this bug thread helped me by saying there was two steps.

[Bug 480489] Re: [needs-packaging] Opera

2015-09-02 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
We'd be thrilled to be in multiverse. The license was in fact written
in such a way to allow that. E.g. Arch Linux has a opera in their
standard repository (not only AUR, but in the 'community' repo).

[Bug 989396] Re: Package keyboard-configuration post-installation script. Hang on /bin/setupcon --force --save for 10 min then killed

2015-06-19 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
As a workaround, I killed setupcon which was hanging, then it retried at
the end, and I killed it again. Then I went into /usr/bin/setupcon as
root and wrote in exit 0 at the top, so it would exit without doing
its evil work.

Then:

$ sudo dpkg --configure -a

at the end. And things seems fixed.

So in other words, you can do this change to /usr/bin/setupcon (and just miss
whatever changes it does) after you've killed it the first time. Then the last
time it tries, things will succeed. Or you can just fix things after the fact.

[Bug 1460401] [NEW] Upgrade to 15.04 fails because of systemd ureadahead conflict

2015-05-31 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
Public bug reported:

I do have third-party packages, but they do not seem to be related here
(or I might be blind). Anyway, I did install systemd-sysv and ran with
that, when I tried the upgrade earlier it failed. I didn't investigate.
Now I removed systemd-sysv and tried the upgrade, but to no avail.

The brokenness continues. It makes me think there might be something
really broken with the packages here? Or is it something bad I've done?

I guess maybe that I've tried to install ureadahead myself before (just
from apt), and I've also used systemd-sysv might be the special bits
here.

Anyway, would be good to be able to upgrade.

[Bug 1172740] Re: Quantal-Raring: UnicodeDecodeError: in NotEnoughFreeSpaceError

I was also hit by this bug, and didn't find this one, so I made a
duplicate. In that bug, I also said that I had posted a patch to the
Debian upstream so that they could always return Unicode for size_to_str
[0]. It is really the responsibility of the library.

[Bug 1325418] [NEW] UnicodeDecodeError in checkFreeSpace on 13.10=14.04 upgrade

2014-06-01 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
Public bug reported:

Steps:

 1. Use a locale that has an LC_NUMBER with a no-breaking space (or some other
non-ascii character)
 2. Have too little space on one mount (for me it was /boot)
 3. Can't do release upgrade to 14.04 (well, not getting any error message)

I sent a patch upstream[0], but I don't know if it'll be accepted, and
also, this won't really help unless the package is updated on the
versions people upgrade from.

  [0] https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=750120

I suggest instead that you code around it in the trusty upgrade script.
The offending line is the apt_pkg.size_to_str(). Instead of using that
bare, you should prepend a `.decode('utf-8')` to it.

I don't know where the code for that trusty tarball is held, so I don't
have a patch. But I can do that if you tell me where. (should be a
simple fix though).

[Bug 937596] [NEW] Ubuntu should deliver compat package: unison 2.32

2012-02-21 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
Public bug reported:

Unison is a strange program in that in needs to run on all machines.

Ubuntu has shipped unison-2.32 for a long time, alongside unison-2.27.57
practically forever.

In precise (12.04), the package has suddenly changed. However, I've got
many Ubuntu LTS servers and at work I use older Ubuntu desktop, and now
I can't sync my laptop! Which is kinda grave. :-)

The easy fix is to do as you've done before, let people have an upgrade
path. You couldu probably remove unison-2.27.57 now, and rather replace
it with a unison-2.32 compat instead.

Thanks :-)

[Bug 308605] Re: [MASTER]Firefox is already running message

2011-08-02 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
This is a very big issue here. We're moving away from Firefox to Opera
and Chromium because of it.

When someone a) logs in, b) leaves with the Ubuntu computer locked
and then c) someone turns off the computer at the end of the day/week,
the .parentlock and lock reside on the NFS.

So, when they get back, Firefox will NEVER work again. And I have to go
in and delete those two files. It's extremely irritating, and it also
affects Thunderbird.

They're not crash proof.

Bad design.

So yes, it should be a softlock, where you can say I want to start Firefox
ANYWAY.

[Bug 223636] Re: gvfs should unmount remote mounts on network disconnect

Waiting for this.

My use case: I started copying some pictures to my server. Seeing that

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=523146

I don't know what happened to this bug, what should a CD burner program
have to do with sftp-connections?

close to being tested. I look forward to the day I can

I'm getting a similar looking error. This is a SDHC 8GB card, I've used

Attached dmesg output. It also shows the register dump and these lines:

long time, just now did I search for a solution though.

[Bug 576972] Re: thinkpad x60s, can't turn off rfkill hard block

The ThinkPad actually has a tiny hard radio-kill button! Not just fn-f5,

[Bug 576381] [NEW] Ubuntu One Rhythmbox signup crashes when I don't want to signup for free storage

2010-05-06 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox-ubuntuone-music-store

I did this:

- found many songs I wanted to download, added to basket
- clicked checkout
- a web page opened in Firefox (in the background! :-( ), I used my launchpad
account to log in
- I clicked cancel on the «I want 2GB free storage», because I don't want
that. I only want to buy the music.
- I was directed to this page:
http://localhost:38291/?nonce=8427280return=https://one.ubuntu.com saying this:

There was an error

The authentication process has not succeeded. This may be a temporary
problem; please try again in a few minutes.

---
And all my basket is now clean, because Rhythmbox also crashed because of this.

I think it should handle this better than crashing hard like that.

** Affects: rhythmbox-ubuntuone-music-store (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

I want to give that machine away, so I shall try to test it this

[Bug 553745] Re: plymouthd crashed with SIGSEGV in ply_event_loop_process_pending_events()

2010-04-11 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
There is just so much crashing with Lucid Lynx :-(((

I get a crash every 1-2 hours. The intel 845-issue.

The boot took LONG time today, so I thought it'd hang and shut it of.
Turns out (I think) that it was doing ureadahead-logging or something.
After that the display didn't work, so I had to SSH in and run dpkg
--configure -a to fix it. (also did dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-generic
plymouth ureadahead, and deleted all the ureadahead-files).

2010-04-01 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
I have also had crashes after a full day of working with no problem.
Next day, crash, crash.

The wall paper was low resolution, the rest was OK. Every alternating
line was wallpaper, and the other was old programs I've closed that
hung around, stuck into the wallpaper!

I changed wallpaper and played with the settings - BAM - crash. No
apport from this. Then after two restarts everything was fine, and I
worked on the computer 4 hours yesterday with no problems... So it's
still quite shaky.

[Bug 550887] [NEW] REGRESSION, doesn't switch to your chosen keyboard layout

2010-03-29 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

This didn't happen in Karmic, neither in Lucid, until this update today.
(I haven't used this computer in 1-2 weeks, worked before that).

When GDM starts, I click my user, and the keyboard shows as «Norwegian
Dvorak». However, the keyboard ISN'T dvorak, it's normal qwerty.

This worked just a little while ago, hence a regression. gdm =

[Bug 174832] Re: ubuntu gnome-terminal - ignores current keyboard layout for shortcuts

2010-01-12 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
All of these solutions are no solutions for me; I'm using my

machintosh-layout, but I need norwegian dvorak. So this bug still
bites.

Ohwell, she doesn't use the terminal all too much, but I've taught her
CTRL+C closes her while true: python programs, so I can't really just
change it to CTRL+I, because that's wrong and won't work on another
computer.

Sorry for the ugly 's, AltGr only works in gnome-terminal (doh!).

We're bitten as well. I've gotten many requests for this here at the

often used). For me using Gmail, I have to do the whole .gvfs-dance in
order to find documents on the network. Not nice.

Actually, that's not a big problem, because my computer can easily read

[Bug 448895] Re: Ubuntu doesn't start

2009-10-30 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
Well, now I started the computer again; still this error. I see that
there's a new kernel update, maybe it'll fix it.

As I said, it has been working with the older kernels, so jaunty worked
fine before. It's no use changing to karmic yet, these are work
computers, and I need to test and run Karmic a good while before I
update the other computers. Right now we're in a mixed environment
between intrepid and jaunty (due to bugs in jaunty) - hopefully we can
migrate everything to karmic.

Anyway, jaunty is broken. I can try to restart after applying the new
kernel update now.

Uname now is 2.6.28-15 #52-Ubuntu

[Bug 448895] [NEW] Ubuntu doesn't start

2009-10-11 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
Public bug reported:

When starting a Jaunty computer at work, it didn't start, just showing
20% - 30% finished but hanging there. I could switch to another VT. When
switching to F8 and hitting CTRL+ALT+DELETE it started moving again, and
I could then go to VT1 (CTRL+ALT+F1).

From there I had to

mount -o remount,rw /
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
/etc/init.d/gdm start

and it all worked swell again.

The first time I tried this, I also had to get an IP-address (dhclient
eth0) and mount my home dirs (mount /home).

As you can see, there is a bug in the linux kernel (dmesg told me so). I
haven't had problems with this computer before.

A nice fellow on ubuntuforums found the culprit.

Remove --manage-gids in /etc/default/nfs-kernel-server

I guess this problem will just surface more and more as people replace
the older Ubuntu server with newer systems. So I would look out for this
bug, maybe fix it before you get a ton of broken systems... :-)

[Bug 322052] Re: [upstream] [3.1] odt to doc with document using tables doesn' work correctly

2009-08-20 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
@Chris, thank you, but the link doesn't work. Can't download a DEB of
2.4. It doesn't exist more. I found a tgz another place, hope it's good.

By the way, 3.1.0 has NOT fixed the problem. The problem is fixed in
3.1.1. It should be released 27th og august. How fast will it get picked
up by the OOo PPA? (If I can't install the tgz that is)

So. How can we downgrade to OpenOffice 2.4 for those that have upgraded

[Bug 409366] [NEW] Secondary groups not working with NFS

2009-08-05 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
Public bug reported:

I´m using LDAP for groups and NFS for home dirs. My problem is as
follows:

I only have a few groups, so it's not the problem everyone else had.
When I've mounted a disk over NFS, I need to have my primary group in
order to read in the groups I'm a member of. Secondary groups is not
working.

Code:

r...@machine:/home/user# smbldap-groupshow secret
...
gidNumber: 1504
displayName: secret
memberUid: user,anotheruser

r...@machine:/home/user# su - user

u...@machine:~$ groups
users secret

u...@machine:~$ ls -ald ../secret/
drwxr-x--- 12 anotheruser secret 4096 2009-07-27 15:39 ../secret/

u...@machine:~$ cd ../secret/
bash: cd: ../secret/: Permission denied

u...@machine:~$ ls ../secret/
ls: cannot open directory ../secret/: Permission denied

But it works if I change the group to primary by hand with newgrp:

Code:

u...@machine:~$ newgrp secret
u...@machine:~$ cd ../secret/
u...@machine:/home/secret$ ls
Nice secrets.txt

But my users cannot be expected to do this!

The server where the real files are held (the NFS server) do not know
anything about users. And it shouldn´t, it´s only job is to export files
via NFS and do backups.

Description:Ubuntu karmic (development branch)
Release:9.10

I'm truly brushed off my feet, I didn't know our server ran karmic
(!!!), I don't know what the other sysadmin was thinking. Anyway, it may
very well be related to that.

[Bug 322827] Re: libpam-gnome-keyring: keyring password should be updated or cleared when a new system password is used

2009-06-11 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
I've tried every password I've ever thought about, but I still can't
make Evolution function as I don't know how that keyring came into
being.

My user was never created on this machine, as they are created on the
server where no fancy-pants keyrings exist. So I guess Ubuntu just made
one the first time I logged in and used NULL as password or something,
because it's impossible to unlock it.

[Bug 346912] Re: Tracker index corruption (was Tracker does not stop indexing)

2009-05-08 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal

[Bug 222003] Re: Can't contact LDAP server

2008-10-27 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
Well, no of course. I think it a bit far fetched to not be able to use a
self-signedd cert as *I'M* the one setting up the clients, and I should
be perfectly aware which certificate is mine. I don't think that it is a
good user friendly (or admin friendly) way to require to fork out
useless money for something we don't need :-)

I'm rather surprised that you REQUIRE CA signed certificates.

Anyway, as I said, the config worked when I used ldap_example on the
clients. And everything is working perfectly fine here now, a mixed
Windows/Ubuntu environment with Debian server using self-signed
certificates and all.

Ah, but I actually think I don't have any TLS enabled at all, seemed
overkill and I didn't want to set it up. :-)

[Bug 222003] Re: Can't contact LDAP server

2008-10-23 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
Actually I fixed it by using

 auth-client-config -a -p ldap_example

and thus using Ubuntu's provided ldap pam-configuration and *not* the
one used in that big often-followed tutorial[1]. Sorry for the noise.
Although I don't know the difference, why the provided ldap_example
works and the one in the tutorial doesn't.

2008-10-15 Thread Odin Hørthe Omdal
I've followed the same guide (but only for clients, my server is running
Debian with openldap). The Ubuntu client that I'm using is Intrepid
(although it seems this is a rather common error no matter
distribution).

I've tried every combination of settings on the client, and it seems to
work as

finger ldapuser

returns nice information. ldapsearch -x also returns the user
database... So it's only PAM that can't connect:
