Re: [Bug 675127] Re: Firefox crashes on startup
Dear Christopher M. Penalver, I cannot find this bug 675127 on launchpad any more. Anyway, it has no longer been a problem for quite some time now (a year or two). I am running the newest version of kubuntu. Olof On 01/20/2014 02:33 AM, Christopher M. Penalver wrote: Olof Staffans, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? [Bug 827815] Re: Can't log into KDE, with error: Could not start D-bus, can you call qdbus?
I have recently updated to kubuntu 13.10 in 4 different computers, with 2 different partitions in each computer = 8 partitions. In two instances out of 8 I encountered this problem. At least one of them was a 64 bit installation. The first case was a HP notebook, and a pre-release version of 13.10, that I installed in early March. The first upgrade from 12.10 went OK, but then a later update lead to this problem with the qdbus. At that time I got rid of the problem by installing qt4-dev-tools, if I remember right. Today I encountered the same problem the second time in a 64 bit installation. The distribution upgrade seemed to run normally, but when I started up the coputer in the new version I got this Could not start D-Bus. This time I fixed it by running sudo apt-get install qdbus in tty1, which resulted in the installation of both qdbus and qtchooser and the removal of the old qdbus:i386 and qtchooser:i386. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/827815 Title: Can't log into KDE, with error: Could not start D-bus, can you call qdbus? I just cheecked the first of the two installations that I mentioned above where I first encountered this problem (in the HP-620 notebook). That one is also a 64 bit installation. [Bug 1142213] Re: emacs23/24 GUI does not start when run in Kubuntu 13.04 with oxygen-gtk theme enabled
I've got the same problems (see Bug 1173857). Sorry for my ignorance, but how do I change the theme from oxygen to something else? I just did some testing to se what causes emacs23 to hang: - If I start emacs from a terminal, then it most of the time does to open a new window. - emacs -nw from a terminal works fine (as also noticed above) - If I start emacs from the kubuntu menu, then it (almost) always starts, and does not hang immiately. After that there are many things that I can do before Emacs hangs, such as: - compose an E-mail message (using M-X mail). It hangs only when I try to send the mail (using Ctl-C). - Write some text in the scratch-window, and save it to the disk. - I can edit some more, and do a recover file to get back what I saved earlier, and it still works fine. - Many of the the help menues under Ctl-H work fine. However, Ctl-H r makes it hang. After that I have to wait some time before it again starts properly. - The window splitting commands work fine. However, there are certain commands that always make Emacs hang: - Find file (Ctl-X Ctl-F) - Visit File (Ctl-X Ctl-V) - Dired - Sending of Mail - Ctl-H r (Display the Emacs manual in Info mode.) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1142213 Title: emacs23/24 GUI does not start when run in Kubuntu 13.04 with oxygen- gtk theme enabled To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/emacs23/+bug/1142213/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 675127] Re: Firefox crashes on startup
I may have passed judgement too quickly on Firefox. It is not the only program that makes the computer freeze. This has also happened for some other graphical programs that use the internet, such as dolphin trying to open a network folder, and maybe adept downloading packages. By he way, this happens in three different partitions, one running Kubuntu 10.04 i386, one running Kubuntu 10.10 i386, and one running Kubuntu 10.10 amd64. After studying the different menu.lst more carefully I think that I found the reason for this behavior, and it is basically my own fault: I found the following (inappropriate) lines in the menu.lst on one of the partitions that produced the wrong uuid-numbers. ## default kernel options ## default kernel options for automagic boot options ## If you want special options for specific kernels use kopt_x_y_z ## where x.y.z is kernel version. I have finally been able to get a booting system. The reason why X-windows did not start up was that the generic vesa driver did not work. The above entry is supposed to boot the amd64 partition on /dev/sda7 (hd0,6), UUID=f21660ca-abf6-4575-b374-1f059f74ea7a (SATA disk) I also have a Windows partition, and a third kubuntu partition on /dev/sdb2 (hd1,1) UUID=6339b283-19ff-41fa-b65d-355724881e1e (ATA disk) If I use the above entry (prouced by the dist-upgrade to 10.04) to try to boot the system on (hd06), then the system hangs, and complains that it cannot mount the root partition. The same thing happened already when I upgraded from Jaunty to Karmik, but I did not report it then. The solution that I have used is to edit menu.lst by hand and replace the third line by kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-22-generic root=UUID=f21660ca- abf6-4575-b374-1f059f74ea7a ro quiet splash If I remember correctly, the strange UUID=6574fd38-cc2b-4137-89ad- 6790234a7328 in the above boot entry used to be the old signature of (hd1,2), before I was forced to reformat that partition after un unsuccessfull attempt to upgrade that partition to a beta version of Lucid. Each oif the above three kubuntu partitions contain a private /boot- directory, and a /boot/grub. When I have upgraded to a new distribution the upgrade procedure has produced a new menu.lst in /boot/grup on the partition in question, and I have then copied the relevant part of that menu.lest to partition (hd1,2), i.e., to the partition to which the master boot record points. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Wrong uuid in menu.lst https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/584564 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

One small correction: The (on /amd64 dev/sda7) at the end of the first line is not produced automatically, but I have added this comment myself manually. -- Wrong uuid in menu.lst https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/584564 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 569653] Re: Lucid freezes on boot
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Binary package hint: packagekit A couple of weeks ago I sintalled the new prerelease of lucid. The first installation went OK; but when I later upgraded the packages I could no longer boot this partition. I have a number of kernels installed (enclose menu.lst). Out of these kernels the only one that I can use to log onto the system are the recovery versions of 2.6.27-7 and 2.6.28-18; all the other freeze during the boot. If I start in recovery mode, and then start up X-windows, then I seem to loose the keyboard and the mouse, so I have to revert to the on/off button to close the system. By using one of these old kernels I was yesterday able to update the system so that it is now supposedly the current version of the LTS lucid, but I still have the same problem when booting. - I can get a non-graphic version up and running using the two oldest - kernels, and I can also access the lucid partition graphically by - starting up an older karmik kernel. + I can get a non-graphic version up and running using the two oldest kernels, and I can also access the lucid partition graphically by starting up an older karmik kernel. + --- + AlsaDevices: + total 0 + drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 60 2010-04-25 08:49 by-id + drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 80 2010-04-25 08:49 by-path + AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.18rc3. + AplayDevices: aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found... + Architecture: i386 + ArecordDevices: arecord: device_list:223: no soundcards found... + AudioDevicesInUse: Error: command ['fuser', '-v', '/dev/dsp', '/dev/dsp1', '/dev/snd/by-path', '/dev/snd/by-id', '/dev/sequencer2', '/dev/sequencer', '/dev/seq'] failed with exit code 1: + CRDA: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory + CurrentDmesg: + [ 30.656010] eth0: no IPv6 routers present + [ 87.016018] Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = -117240025 ns) + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 + HibernationDevice: RESUME=/dev/sdb5 + IwConfig: + lono wireless extensions. + + eth0 no wireless extensions. + MachineType: To Be Filled By O.E.M. Re: [Bug 489712] Re: Recent i386 karmic kernels crash, amd64 kernels are OK
For some reason this message did not seem to go through, so I resend it. Olof Staffans wrote: Dear Jeremy, Indeed, the problem still exists to some extend. I stopped using the default Radeon video card driver, since it did not work, and changed to the vesa driver. At the moment the amd64 installation on my primary computer works more or less OK. [Bug 569653] [NEW] Lucid freezes on boot
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: packagekit A couple of weeks ago I sintalled the new prerelease of lucid. I can get a non-graphic version up and running using the two oldest kernels, and I can also access the lucid partition graphically by starting up an older karmik kernel. ** Affects: packagekit (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Lucid freezes on boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/569653 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 489712] [NEW] Recent i386 karmic kernels crash, amd64 kernels are OK
I have now traced the problem to the graphics card driver. The reason why the 64 bit installation did not crash was that it used the vesa driver instead of the default Radeon driver. [Bug 489712] [NEW] Recent i386 karmic kernels crash, amd64 kernels are OK
Public bug reported: After upgrading to Karmic my amd64 partition still works,OK, but my two i386 partitions crash if I use the most recent kernels. Typically 2.6.31-15 and 2.6.31-14 become totally irresponsible within a minute or two. The kernel 2.6.28-15 can work for some time, but sometimes the graphic is messed up, and I have to switch to one of the other processes (Alt-Ctl-F1) and back to get back a graphic window. In this kernel only the X-server crashes, and the keyboard still works, so that I can switch to a terminal window. Kernel 2.6.27-11 typically does not crash until I log out. After upgrading to Karmic the sound stopped to work in kernels 2.6.28-15 and 2.6.27-11. This applies also to the amd_64 version. But as I said, I do not have these crashes in the 64 bit verson. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Recent i386 karmic kernels crash, amd64 kernels are OK https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/489712 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I tried, but it does NOT help. Olof Jem wrote: I too had this problem for several weeks. It has now gone away. When it happened to me I would: sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart This would enable networking until next reboot. Dear Martin, I enclose the data that you requested as two attachments.
