Re: [Bug 675127] Re: Firefox crashes on startup

2014-01-21 Thread Olof Staffans
Dear Christopher M. Penalver,

I cannot find this bug 675127 on launchpad any more. Anyway, it has no
longer been a problem for quite some time now (a year or two). I am
running the newest version of kubuntu.

Olof Staffans, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
 http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

 apport-collect -p linux REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

If reproducible, could you also please test the latest upstream kernel
available (not the daily folder) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream
kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If
this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
 kernel-fixed-upstream
 kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
 example:
 kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc8

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon
next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well,
 please remove the tag:
 needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
 kernel-bug-exists-upstream
 kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
 needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
 understanding.

[Bug 827815] Re: Can't log into KDE, with error: Could not start D-bus, can you call qdbus?

2013-05-02 Thread Olof Staffans
I have recently updated to kubuntu 13.10 in 4 different computers, with
2 different partitions in each computer = 8 partitions. In two
instances out of 8 I encountered this problem. At least one of them was
a 64 bit installation.

The first case was a HP notebook, and a pre-release version of 13.10,
that I installed in early March. The first upgrade from 12.10 went OK,
but then a later update lead to this problem with the qdbus. At that
time I got rid of the problem by installing qt4-dev-tools, if I remember
right.

Today I encountered the same problem the second time in a 64 bit
installation. The distribution upgrade seemed to run normally, but when
I started up the coputer in the new version I got this Could not start
D-Bus. This time I fixed it by running

sudo apt-get install qdbus

in tty1, which resulted in the installation of both qdbus and qtchooser
and the removal of the old qdbus:i386 and qtchooser:i386.

2013-05-02 Thread Olof Staffans
I just cheecked the first of the two installations that I mentioned
above where I first encountered this problem (in the HP-620 notebook).
That one is also a 64 bit installation. However, even after the removal
of the packages qt4-dev-tool it is still working fine.

[Bug 1142213] Re: emacs23/24 GUI does not start when run in Kubuntu 13.04 with oxygen-gtk theme enabled

2013-04-29 Thread Olof Staffans
I've got the same problems (see Bug 1173857).

Sorry for my ignorance, but how do I change the theme from oxygen to
something else?

I just did some testing to se what causes emacs23 to hang:

- If I start emacs from a terminal, then it most of the time does to open a new
window.
- emacs -nw from a terminal works fine (as also noticed above)
- If I start emacs from the kubuntu menu, then it (almost) always starts, and
does not hang immiately. After that there are many things that I can do before
Emacs hangs, such as:

- compose an E-mail message (using M-X mail). It hangs only when I try to send
the mail (using Ctl-C).
- Write some text in the scratch-window, and save it to the disk.
- I can edit some more, and do a recover file to get back what I saved
earlier, and it still works fine.
- Many of the the help menues under Ctl-H work fine. However, Ctl-H r makes it
hang. After that I have to wait some time before it again starts properly.
- The window splitting commands work fine.

However, there are certain commands that always make Emacs hang:

- Find file (Ctl-X Ctl-F)
- Visit File (Ctl-X Ctl-V)
- Dired
- Sending of Mail
- Ctl-H r (Display the Emacs manual in Info mode.)

For me it was enought to switch GTK3 to Emacs. The GTK2 was already
someting else than oxygen-gtk.

Re: [Bug 675127] Re: Firefox crashes on startup

2010-11-14 Thread Olof Staffans
I may have passed judgement too quickly on Firefox. It is not the only
program that makes the computer freeze. This has also happened for some
other graphical programs that use the internet, such as dolphin trying
to open a network folder, and maybe adept downloading packages.

By he way, this happens in three different partitions, one running
Kubuntu 10.04 i386, one running Kubuntu 10.10 i386, and one running
Kubuntu 10.10 amd64. But the problem started alreadybefore I upgraded
two of the partitions to Maverick.

Could this be a problem related to the ethernet driver?

Re: [Bug 584564] Re: Wrong uuid in menu.lst

2010-05-24 Thread Olof Staffans
I have to apologize: Please ignore this error report!

After studying the different menu.lst more carefully I think that I
found the reason for this behavior, and it is basically my own fault:

I found the following (inappropriate) lines in the menu.lst on one of
the partitions that produced the wrong uuid-numbers.

## default kernel options
## default kernel options for automagic boot options
## If you want special options for specific kernels use kopt_x_y_z
## where x.y.z is kernel version. Minor versions can be omitted.
## e.g. kopt=root=/dev/hda1 ro
## kopt_2_6_8=root=/dev/hdc1 ro
## kopt_2_6_8_2_686=root=/dev/hdc2 ro
# kopt=root=UUID=6574fd38-cc2b-4137-89ad-6790234a7328 ro

## default grub root device
## e.g. groot=(hd0,0)
# groot=6339b283-19ff-41fa-b65d-355724881e1e

Apparently, I had at some point copied the file menu.lst from one
partition to another, and this resulted in the wrong options.

Sorry :)

Here is the output of the blkid that you asked for:

[Bug 569653] Re: Lucid freezes on boot

2010-05-24 Thread Olof Staffans
I have finally been able to get a booting system.

The reason why X-windows did not start up was that the generic vesa
driver did not work. (I was forced to use the vesa driver in the Karmic
distribution, because the default radeon driver regularly froze.)

When I switched to the default radeon video card driver, then I got the
X-windows up and running.

However, now the system instead crashes as soon as I try to change the
screen resolution from the default resolution 1024 x 768 to anything
else using system settings.

[Bug 584564] [NEW] Wrong uuid in menu.lst

2010-05-23 Thread Olof Staffans
Public bug reported:

When I updated to Kubuntu 10.04 I again got incorrect entries in
menu.lst. These entries were of the following type:

title Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-22-generic (on /amd64 dev/sda7)
uuidf21660ca-abf6-4575-b374-1f059f74ea7a
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-22-generic
root=UUID=6574fd38-cc2b-4137-89ad-6790234a7328 ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-22-generic
quiet
savedefault

I have several different active partitions. The grub boot loader that I
use is located on

/dev/sdb3 (hd1,2), UUID=0cc2ef56-2f58-40ec-b2a1-15f446713857 (ATA disk)

That partition now contains a Lucid i386 (10.04).
The above entry is supposed to boot the amd64 partition on

/dev/sda7 (hd0,6), UUID=f21660ca-abf6-4575-b374-1f059f74ea7a (SATA disk)

I also have a Windows partition, and a third kubuntu partition on

/dev/sdb2 (hd1,1) UUID=6339b283-19ff-41fa-b65d-355724881e1e (ATA disk)

If I use the above entry (prouced by the dist-upgrade to 10.04) to try
to boot the system on (hd06), then the system hangs, and complains that
it cannot mount the root partition. The same thing happened already
when I upgraded from Jaunty to Karmik, but I did not report it then.
The solution that I have used is to edit menu.lst by hand and replace
the third line by

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-22-generic root=UUID=f21660ca-
abf6-4575-b374-1f059f74ea7a ro quiet splash

If I remember correctly, the strange UUID=6574fd38-cc2b-4137-89ad-
6790234a7328 in the above boot entry used to be the old signature of
(hd1,2), before I was forced to reformat that partition after un
unsuccessfull attempt to upgrade that partition to a beta version of
Lucid.

Each oif the above three kubuntu partitions contain a private /boot-
directory, and a /boot/grub. When I have upgraded to a new distribution
the upgrade procedure has produced a new menu.lst in /boot/grup on the
partition in question, and I have then copied the relevant part of that
menu.lest to partition (hd1,2), i.e., to the partition to which the
master boot record points.

One small correction: The (on /amd64 dev/sda7) at the end of the first

manually.

[Bug 569653] Re: Lucid freezes on boot

2010-04-25 Thread Olof Staffans
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: packagekit

A couple of weeks ago I sintalled the new prerelease of lucid. The first
installation went OK; but when I later upgraded the packages I could no
longer boot this partition. I have a number of kernels installed
(enclose menu.lst). Out of these kernels the only one that I can use to
log onto the system are the recovery versions of 2.6.27-7 and
2.6.28-18; all the other freeze during the boot. If I start in recovery
mode, and then start up X-windows, then I seem to loose the keyboard and
the mouse, so I have to revert to the on/off button to close the system.
By using one of these old kernels I was yesterday able to update the
system so that it is now supposedly the current version of the LTS
lucid, but I still have the same problem when booting.

- I can get a non-graphic version up and running using the two oldest
- kernels, and I can also access the lucid partition graphically by
- starting up an older karmik kernel.

[Bug 569653] [NEW] Lucid freezes on boot

2010-04-24 Thread Olof Staffans
Public bug reported:

I can get a non-graphic version up and running using the two oldest
kernels, and I can also access the lucid partition graphically by
starting up an older karmik kernel.

Re: [Bug 489712] [NEW] Recent i386 karmic kernels crash, amd64 kernels are OK

2010-01-31 Thread Olof Staffans
I have now traced the problem to the graphics card driver. The reason
why the 64 bit installation did not crash was that it used the vesa
driver instead of the default Radeon driver. I have a Radeon graphics
card installed (the following is a piece of the log produced by the
Radeon driver):

(II) RADEON(0): EDID for output VGA-0
(II) RADEON(0): Manufacturer: VSC Model: f14 Serial#: 16843009
(II) RADEON(0): Year: 2003 Week: 27
(II) RADEON(0): EDID Version: 1.3
(II) RADEON(0): Analog Display Input, Input Voltage Level: 0.700/0.300 V
(II) RADEON(0): Signal levels configurable
(II) RADEON(0): Sync: Separate CompositeSerration on. V.Sync Pulse
req. if CompSync or SyncOnGreen
(II) RADEON(0): Max Image Size [cm]: horiz.: 32 vert.: 24
(II) RADEON(0): Gamma: 2.20
(II) RADEON(0): DPMS capabilities: Off; RGB/Color Display
(II) RADEON(0): First detailed timing is preferred mode
(II) RADEON(0): redX: 0.626 redY: 0.338 greenX: 0.278 greenY: 0.601
(II) RADEON(0): blueX: 0.150 blueY: 0.068 whiteX: 0.096 whiteY: 0.109

I now use it by means of the vesa driver:

(II) LoadModule: vesa
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//vesa_drv.so
(II) Module vesa: vendor=X.Org Foundation
compiled for 1.6.3, module version = 2.2.1
Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 5.0
(II) VESA: driver for VESA chipsets: vesa
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 0...@00:00:0

In other words, I edited xorg.conf and replaced the default

Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
EndSection

by

Section Device
Identifier Generic Video Card
Driver vesa
BusID PCI:1:0:0
EndSection

and everything seems to work fine now.

[Bug 489712] [NEW] Recent i386 karmic kernels crash, amd64 kernels are OK

2009-11-28 Thread Olof Staffans
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Karmic my amd64 partition still works,OK, but my two
i386 partitions crash if I use the most recent kernels.

Typically 2.6.31-15 and 2.6.31-14 become totally irresponsible within a
minute or two. The kernel 2.6.28-15 can work for some time, but
sometimes the graphic is messed up, and I have to switch to one of the
other processes (Alt-Ctl-F1) and back to get back a graphic window. In
this kernel only the X-server crashes, and the keyboard still works, so
that I can switch to a terminal window. Kernel 2.6.27-11 typically does
not crash until I log out.

After upgrading to Karmic the sound stopped to work in kernels 2.6.28-15
and 2.6.27-11. This applies also to the amd_64 version.

But as I said, I do not have these crashes in the 64 bit verson.

[Bug 304896] [NEW] Konqueror 4.1.3 does not find small icons in navigation panel

2008-12-03 Thread Olof Staffans
Public bug reported:

I have upgraded a number of booting partitions on two different
computers (both i386 and amd64) from Hardy to the Intrepid distribution,
with KDE 4.1.3, and Konqueror 4.1.3. Out of the small icons to the far
left on the navigation panel Konqueror is only able to display the icons
for Amarok and Services; the others are replaced by question marks.

I have also installed two copies of Intrepid (i386) on fresh partitions,
and there this problem does not occur.

[Bug 301284] [NEW] Desktop switching commands Ctl-Fn do not work in KDE 4

2008-11-23 Thread Olof Staffans
Public bug reported:

The new KDE 4 in the new intrepid distribution ships with 4 desktops as
a default. I personally use 10. After increasing the number of desktops
to 10 only the first four desktop shifting commands Ctl-Fn work
properly. For n=5,6,7 nothing happens, and for n=8,9,10 something else
happens

To be more precise: After the sudo update-apt-xapian-index I can now

in ADEPT INSTALLER. This is rather confusing: by mistake I start the
adept installer instead of the adept manager, and wonder why I cannot

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 289466 ***

This problem has now been essentially resolved. I downloaded the newest
alternate intrepid i386 image, burned it to a CD-rom, and upgraded the
distribution from the CD-rom. After a restart I was able to access the
internet through eth0.

The word essentially above means the following: There is still
something strange going on in the connection: The first time that the
dhcp negotiation is finished and suppose to be activated the kernel
still resets the connection, and everything has to start all over again.
However, now the second time succeeds. Before it went into an
indefinite loop.

My problem is connected with eth0 and the interplay between the kernel

the eth0 is supposed to be made public, somebody (the kernel?) decides
to shut down the port and start all over again. As a result, I have no
connection to the internet while running intrepid. See the enclosed

My physical connection is the following: The eth0 port is connected to a
Zyxel homepna modem, which is then connected by telehpone wire to the
server in the basement of our 6 story house. It seems like the kernel
reset (that you find in the syslog) causes the Zyxel modem to go off
line, which then starts the process all over again.

Thank you. From the kernel log and ifconfig I see that the Ethernet
device is detected properly, but it wasn't configured (no IP, etc.). I
tentatively assign it to network-manager, but I think I need some
 further information now.

Did you log into this system locally and start a GNOME session, or did
you do something else? (Remote login through ssh, or text mode login,
etc.). Can you please do a clean boot and then attach
 /etc/network/interfaces and /var/log/daemon.log?

I took a closer look at the syslog (and I enclose the relevant bit). The
DHSP negotiation goes well, until the device is supposed to be
activated, and then it every time looses the carrier, like this:

Nov 2 17:44:59 Lady NetworkManager: info Activation (eth0)
successful, device activated.
Nov 2 17:44:59 Lady NetworkManager: info Activation (eth0) Stage 5
of 5 (IP Configure Commit) complete.
Nov 2 17:44:59 Lady NetworkManager: info (eth0): carrier now OFF
(device state 8)
Nov 2 17:44:59 Lady NetworkManager: info (eth0): device state
change: 8 - 2
Nov 2 17:44:59 Lady NetworkManager: info (eth0): deactivating device.
