OK, on further investigation - it does seem to be something to do with
thumbnails/previews.
Turning off the "browse removable media when inserted" option in the volume
management settings fixes it. I can insert the drive, it is automatically
mounted, and i can then eject straight away. Manually
Sorry, should have mentioned I'm getting an "eject failed - Failed to eject
"1.0GB Filesystem"" dialog box plus a bubble/notification saying "writing data
to device".
lsof shows tumblerd is accessing a .flv file in the root of my usb pen drive.

Hi, this bug is affecting me too, however I am on Xubuntu 12.04 LTS and
don't have notify-osd installed (and never have).
My xfce4-notifyd is version 0.2.2-1
xfdesktop4 is version 4.8.3-2ubuntu7
