OK, on further investigation - it does seem to be something to do with thumbnails/previews. Turning off the "browse removable media when inserted" option in the volume management settings fixes it. I can insert the drive, it is automatically mounted, and i can then eject straight away. Manually opening a file browser window by double clicking the drive icon on the desktop makes the problem come back again. Are there any other tests I can do to provide more info?
