2015-07-30 Thread Peter Hurley
Yep, that bug fix works. I applied it to 2.4.60-2~ubuntu14.04.1, which
is the broken version from trusty-updates, and confirm it fixes the
observed problem in chrome + libdrm-nouveau2.

I pushed the repackage to PPA @ ppa:phurley/libdrm (or just downgrade to
libdrm=2.4.56-1~ubuntu2).

[Bug 1426174] [NEW] Messaging Menu integration causes endless imap refresh at high message counts

2015-02-26 Thread Peter Hurley
Public bug reported:

The Messaging Menu and Unity Launcher integration 1.3.1 extension causes
Thunderbird 31.4.0 to endlessly refresh imap folders as message count nears
10 in a folder.
This is not a regression.

Yesterday and again today, Google throttled my imap access because of
excessive imap requests, which was odd because I only use one machine
(ie., no other devices) for that account's email.

My usage is somewhat outside the norm in that I subscribe to several
high-volume mailings (necessary as a kernel developer) which exceed
2 emails a month. These emails are server-filtered and so appear to
be delivered directly to the subscribed folder. There are 23 folders,
each for a different mailing list, tagged for update checks (via Folder
Properties/General Information/When getting new messages...). These
folders are not marked for offline sync and storage.

As of today, I have 9 emails in a just single folder and that's
after deleting email prior to Oct 1.

Yesterday, after Google had disabled my imap access for 2 hrs, I reduced
the number of cached connections from 5 to 1 (I had occasionally seen
errors about too many imap connections when starting up, at least for
the last 2 mos or so).

For the last several hours, Thunderbird has almost constantly been refreshing
folders.
I stopped and restarted Thunderbird several times but the constant refresh
continued.
So I captured an imap log (122MB within several minutes) and noted what appears
to be redundant fetches. For example,

 I tried to fix this a few months ago but failed. If someone with the right
 skills and time want to have a look at this problem, I'd be happy to give
 away a laptop with this chipset. Shipment cost on me. I can prepare a linux
 installation with sources of the kernel at the regression point. Contact me
 if you are up to the task.

Don't do that.

Read here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection
If you can follow those Ubuntu-specific instructions, that will narrow down the
problem.

If you can't follow those instructions, have you filed a Launchpad bug?
If so, please post the link or bug # (double-check that it's a public
bug or say it's private).

 The problem is already bisected. The commit that introduces the regression
 switches nv50 to use nvc0's disp implementation. The commit is basically
 deleting all the nv50 code and changing a few function pointers to use the
 nvc0 implementation. I tried pin pointing what the problem was (see comment
 34) but I was not able to fix the problem.

I saw Ben Gamari's bisection log (from 3.7-3.8), but I didn't realize
that you had duplicated the bisection; I only saw your bump 4 months
later, on 3.13.

The OP reported this for a Dell Latitude E6400 with G98; are you running
similar hardware?

[Bug 1194649] Re: Regression - Logitech Mouse with Unified Receiver not working

2013-07-24 Thread Peter Hurley
@Ranier,

Thanks for the test run data. I pushed that along to the USB3
maintainers so they can address the underlying bug.

I don't know what their schedule is; native xHCI support is new so there
may be more pressing issues to address. I suspect if there's no movement
in a week or two, the workaround will go back into mainline until the
xHCI bug is resolved.

I would expect the Ubuntu kernel to follow suit.

[Bug 1194649] Re: Regression - Logitech Mouse with Unified Receiver not working

2013-07-18 Thread Peter Hurley
@Ranier,
Thanks for your persistence in resolving these bugs.

I read through the history of in bug #1039143, and I agree with you that
one aspect of this problem is unique to USB3 ports. I forwarded the
discussion regarding this bug on the linux kernel mailing list to one of
the xhci_hcd authors.

She would like to obtain usbmon log to confirm if this is related to a
known bug in the xhci_hcd driver. I realize you've provided several of
these already but it would be helpful if you could perform the usbmon
capture on 3.10 mainline (not stable) which is here:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.10-saucy/

Regards,
Peter Hurley

[Bug 1033533] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT: exaMemcpyBox with src=0x0 on nouveau with SW rendering

2013-04-16 Thread Peter Hurley
For me, this bug is easily reproducible (happens within 1 min. of user
session start) on xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1.0.2

My user X session is compiz + classic + upstream gnome-panel + Radiance
theme on NV84.

The stack trace is nearly identical to the original reporter's (I do get
'Failed to idle' or 'Unexpected page flip' at other times but those seem
unrelated to this bug). This bug has been low-priority for me because it
doesn't seem to affect stability.

This bug is _not_ reproducible with ppa:mlankhorst/ppa xserver-xorg-
video-nouveau 1.0.6+spam~quantal2. Let me know if bisect is required.

[Bug 975563] Re: System Menu disappears when using HighContrast themes

2012-12-29 Thread Peter Hurley
This commit
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~indicator-applet-developers/indicator-session/trunk.12.10/revision/358
broke the gtk does fallbacking dropping the -extra ... which goes down to
system. Specifically;

  if (gtk_icon_theme_has_icon (indicator-icon_theme, icon) == FALSE)
icon = gtk-missing-image;

gtk_icon_theme_has_icon() does not provide the 'fallback' behavior
expected (for obvious reasons).

[Bug 1093140] Re: Allow user to specify text colors in /etc/default/grub

2012-12-27 Thread Peter Hurley
Dave, Good point about the grub info file. I'll see about adding
something there.

Regarding a default entry in /etc/default/grub: the 05_debian_theme
patch already has a number of fallback cases to specifically handle
default behavior if certain settings are absent (eg, this is how it
pulls the plymouth theme colors). I don't want to get involved in that
policy mess.

[Bug 1094061] [NEW] trivial build products should not be in source package

2012-12-27 Thread Peter Hurley
Public bug reported:

Packaging trivial build products such as shell/cc-shell-marshal.{c,h}
unnecessarily complicates building from source, __especially__ since
debian/patches/60_ubuntu_nav_bar.patch renders the originals invalid
anyway.

Consider the typical approach for shadowing the package with additional patches:
$ apt-get source gnome-control-center
$ cd gnome-control-center-3.4.2
$ git init
$ git add .
$ git commit -m Base package
$ dpkg-buildpackage -b -rfakeroot -us -uc
. everything builds fine, now cleanup and rebuild .
$ git reset --hard HEAD
$ git clean -xdf
$ dpkg-buildpackage -b -rfakeroot -us -uc
. build fails because trivial build products have current datetime so won't
be rebuilt :(

[Bug 1093938] Re: gnome-panel should not have hard dependency to gnome-icon-theme-symbolic

2012-12-27 Thread Peter Hurley
Hi Jeremy,

Firstly, I think you didn't look closely at the code snippet that I
included. As packaged, gnome-panel does not render the icons for the
user menu, so it doesn't really matter if the icons are found or not
(that is, no functionality is broken by not having gnome-icon-theme-
symbolic installed).

Secondly, I think the purpose of symbolic icons has wandered from its original
mission. Excerpted from the README of gnome-icon-theme-symbolic:
Icons follow the naming specification, but have a -symbolic suffix, so only
applications specifically looking up these symbolic icons will render them. If
a -symbolic icon is missing, the app will fall back to the regular name.

If you'd prefer, I could change this bug (and similarly for g-c-c and
totem) to package should use g_themed_icon_new_from_names() for
symbolic icons.

[Bug 1093938] [NEW] gnome-panel should not have hard dependency to gnome-icon-theme-symbolic

2012-12-26 Thread Peter Hurley
Public bug reported:

1. An icon theme file should not be a hard dependency. How would a different
icon theme provide alternate icons?
2. The 4 symbolic icons referred to are part of the now-defunct User menu,
which no longer draws the icons anyway:

[Bug 1093292] [NEW] vm won't start if host cpus are different steppings

2012-12-23 Thread Peter Hurley
Public bug reported:

On a machine with multiple processors, different steppings may have
different cpu features. So when the 'host cpu configuration' is copied,
required cpu features may not be supported on the other cpu's cores.

On the test machine, dual Intel Xeon E5420s have steppings 6 and 10.
Stepping 6 does not support 'xsave' (/proc/cpuinfo attached).

Perhaps the host cpu configuration should be per-physical id and vcpus
pinned to their respective host?

Unity definitely does something wrong wrt background wiping. With the

Mostly likely, the visual difference is because the proprietary drivers

[Bug 874241] Re: Wrong resolutions in lightdm login screen when using external monitor connected to laptop

2012-04-12 Thread Peter Hurley
Although an xrandr script could work, if the dual monitor configuration
is intended to be permanent then a better solution is to supply a valid
xorg.conf.

I just had to do this when switching from the nvidia proprietary drivers
to nouveau (just experimenting). Jockey blows away the xorg.conf (for
good reason) but no suitable dual monitor configured xorg.conf is
supplied. This makes the lightdm + greeter revert to default behavior
which is to match lowest resolutions on both monitors.

If you scan your /var/log/Xorg.0.log, right at the beginning you'll get
the same log as the original bug reporter:

[ 8.567] Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,
(++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.

[ 8.579] (==) No monitor specified for screen Default Screen Section.
Using a default monitor configuration.

I do not recommend editing your xorg.conf unless you know what your
doing and can recover if the X server won't start.

The key requirements in a dual-monitor xorg.conf are:
1) a ServerLayout section that identifies the screen
2) the desired virtual size in Section Screen/Subsection Display
3) indicating which monitors are connected to which outputs

I've attached my xorg.conf *which is specific to my setup*. Do NOT copy
it your setup! I have provided here only to aid in understanding, in
conjunction with the xorg.conf man page and looking at your own
/var/log/Xorg.0.log

[Bug 980492] [NEW] Default background (solid purple) shows first

2012-04-12 Thread Peter Hurley
Public bug reported:

The default background (solid purple = 2c001e) is shown first. It's not until
the background receives another size_allocate that the actual configured

[Bug 970024] Re: lightDM has purple backgroundcolor before the background image is loaded

2012-04-12 Thread Peter Hurley
As Michael Coupet points out, the bug here is that the default background is

the background that the user-configured gsettings background is drawn. Here's
a clip from the attached greeter log which shows a span of 0.25 seconds between
the MainWindow being shown and the correct, user-specified background being

[Bug 978342] Re: Kernel panic on 3.2.0-22-generic

2012-04-10 Thread Peter Hurley
I think I've been running 3.2.0-22-generic since I 'clean installed'
from the alternate iso CD 20120404 (installed same day).

For certain, I've been running 3.2.0-22-generic since at least April 6,
8am (that's the earliest datetime in syslog.1 with any kernel version
string).

I typically run precise for varying lengths of time (longest, approx 3~4
hours). I have a separate oneiric install which I use for email and
development. I go back and forth between the two installs several times
a day.

I did update today (no new kernel) - didn't notice what else it pulled.

I've never had a crash like this but I don't typically run unity.

This crash repeated while editing in emacs (firefox was running at the
time).

I'm trying to get a debug console up and running so I can capture the
panic. I don't think kdump/crashkernel works with hard lockups.

[Bug 962479] Re: Crash report cannot be processed due to outdated debug packages on daily-live

2012-04-09 Thread Peter Hurley
Hi Martin,

This isn't from updating but rather installing from *that day's daily-
live iso*.

Daily CDs grow old *so quickly* that downloading that day's Live iso and
installing immediately is not fast enough to have matching debug symbols
because some packages have already changed.

I've done this on 3 separate occasions hoping to catch this crashing
ubiquity/parted-server bug in action (bug# 962455, bug# 965719, bug#
973450).

Is there an archive of all packages associated with latest daily-live?
If so, maybe apport retracing should search against that too.

[Bug 962479] Re: Crash report cannot be processed due to outdated debug packages on daily-live

2012-04-09 Thread Peter Hurley
Hi Martin,

Wait -- this situation makes no sense.

Look at the debug symbol packages it's complaining about: they're not
old by 1 version, but instead really old. Since the dbgsyms are on your
side, how can upgrading to the latest binary packages impact the dbgsym
archive??

For example, here's what apport retracing had to say regarding bug #
973450:

  Thank you for your report!

  However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
  developers failed (it does not generate a useful symbolic stack trace). This
  might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on your system
  at the time of the report:

  outdated debug symbol package for dmidecode: package version 2.11-4 dbgsym
version 2.9-1.2build1
  outdated debug symbol package for cryptsetup: package version
2:1.4.1-2ubuntu2 dbgsym version 2:1.1.3-4ubuntu2

Look carefully; dmidecode is still at 2.11-4 !!

What -dbgsym packages can I install locally to get a valid stack

FYI - The outdated debug symbol packages I've reported on a separate

it's due to outdated binary packages but that doesn't make sense --
dmidecode is still at 2.11-4 !!

[Bug 972723] Re: linux 3.2.0-18 - 22 kernel panic on boot, Alienware m17x, Dell xps 1340

2012-04-09 Thread Peter Hurley
Hi Leann,

I'm not sure you saw my comment #5; this bug is a race condition that
exists in the ite-cir driver (from driver's introduction last year to
current mainline). The driver installs an ISR before properly
initializing. If an IRQ occurs after the driver has installed the ISR
(via request_irq) but before it has initialized its internal call
tables, the ite_cir_isr() function will panic (by accessing vma 0).
Incidentally, that's not the only problem with initialization order in
this driver: it hasn't initialized hardware either before installing
the ISR.

Although initially I believed this bug's easy reproducibility was due to
CONFIG_IRQ_REMAP being on, I realize now that's not the case (or, at
least, not exclusively).

After more extensive static analysis, the most likely possibility is genirq:
Handle pending irqs in irq_startup() which was introduced in stable v.3.2.9.
This retriggers pending edge-type interrupts when installing an ISR:
   request_irq  = request_threaded_irq = __setup_irq = irq_startup =
check_irq_resend = irq_retrigger

The only way to be certain would be with git bisect. Of course,
understanding the easy reproducibility is mostly academic as the actual
bug is a race condition that has always existed (at least since the
driver's introduction).

[Bug 973450] Re: parted_server crashed with SIGSEGV in __libc_start_main()

2012-04-09 Thread Peter Hurley
Ok, here's the situation:

There is no stack backtrace because there is no debug symbol package for
parted_server (which is a binary produced from ubiquity source package
in d-i/source/partman-base/parted_server.c)

Despite that, simply loading parted_server in gdb and disassembling at the
fault address was sufficient to uncover the faulting code. In
parted_server.c::command_get_file_system(), the following line will fault if
fs_type == NULL:
if (0 == strncmp(part-fs_type-name, linux-swap, 10))

Although this should be fixed, there is a larger problem that is
contributing to this: the scripts feeding the parted_server are
mistaking /dev/mapper partitions as devices.

Here's the output from parted_devices on my machine:
peter@thor:~/src/packages/ubiquity/ubiquity-2.10.8/d-i/source/partman-base$
sudo ./parted_devices
[sudo] password for peter:

see that parted_server is being fed the /dev/mapper/_Raid0p2, for
example, as a device. This is *way wrong* -- look at the crazy partition

This mishandling of fakeraid partitions should be easily reproducible on
any fakeraid machine.

FYI - the outdated debug symbol packages bug is a red herring. No
stack trace is possible because there are no debug symbol packages for
parted_server.

[Bug 962479] Re: Crash report cannot be processed due to outdated debug packages on daily-live

2012-04-09 Thread Peter Hurley
After debugging the original problem myself, it turns out the the apport
retracing message is just a red herring.

The inability to get a stack backtrace for the original bug has nothing
to do with outdated debug symbol packages. It's because parted_server
(a binary from the ubiquity package) does not have debug symbols or a
debug symbol package.

[Bug 975198] [NEW] alternate iso appears to hang at location selection

2012-04-06 Thread Peter Hurley
Public bug reported:

With amd64 alternate iso 20120406, the installer appears to 'hang' at
location selection.  Hard restart necessary.

However this is actually due to the wireless keyboard being non-responsive.
This is because the hid-logitech-dj driver (for Logitech Unifying Receiver
devices) is not present.

[Bug 972723] Re: linux 3.2.0-18 - 21 kernel panic on boot, Alienware m17x

2012-04-04 Thread Peter Hurley
Hi Brad,

This bug exists in all kernels up to and including mainline (which as of
today was 3.4-rc1).

The ite_probe() function in the ite-cir driver (drivers/media/rc/ite-
cir.c) installs an interrupt service routine via request_irq() before
properly initializing both the hardware and crucial function tables the
ISR uses. As the documentation for request_irq() specifies, all
initialization required for an ISR to function properly must before
performed before calling request_irq(), as an interrupt may be
dispatched even before request_irq() returns.

Normally, this bug would be difficult to trigger and reproduce. However,
now that CONFIG_IRQ_REMAPPING is on, the interrupt is being immediately
triggered for remapping purposes.

Since the function table has not yet been initialized by the ite_probe()
function, the ISR, ite_cir_isr(), tries to call through the function
table which immediately panics (since it tries to jump to vma 0).

As the hardware does not perform a critical function, perhaps the best
temporary solution is to blacklist it.

http://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/freetype-devel/2012-04/msg1.html
I agree that strictly speaking reverting the commit to get a dense monospace
font appearance is not the right way.

In the case of this bug (bug# 966654), the use of integer scaling (as
opposed to fractional scaling) is controlled by a single Flags bit in
the header. When I get a moment, I'll put up a utility here to patch
the font header.

Before I report this upstream, is there a reason why you believe this is
an upstream bug and not related to any of the *over 6000 lines* of

[Bug 968769] [NEW] Symbolic power icons look out-of-place with non-symbolic theme

The power plug-in preferentially selects '*-symbolic' icons first (in

[Bug 968772] [NEW] gnome-power-manager icons should be part of theme

2012-03-29 Thread Peter Hurley
Public bug reported:

Now that gnome-power-manager is no longer part of the
notification/indicator subsystem, it's status icon set should be moved
into the 'gnome' icon theme.

The absence of appropriate icons is forcing devs to economize with poor
substitutions. For example, the power plug-in of gnome-settings-daemon
uses 'battery-*-symbolic' icon names preferentially now, which looks
terrible. See attached screenshot.

[Bug 965487] Re: [power]: gnome-settings-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV in engine_update_composite_device()

2012-03-27 Thread Peter Hurley
@RedSingularity,

As I expected and noted, this bug is *not* a duplicate of bug# 962458,
as confirmed by the completed i386 stack backtrace. This bug dies in
engine_update_composite_device, whereas the amd64 stack backtrace for
bug# 962458 indicates that crash @ engine_get_icon_priv.

In the future, please don't assume that two bugs are related because
they crash in the same binary.

[Bug 966654] [NEW] Monospace fonts have too much space between glyphs

2012-03-27 Thread Peter Hurley
Public bug reported:

Monospace fonts in Ubuntu have traditionally had tight spacing between
glyphs due to using fractional pixel sizes (through Pango).

Commit b0962ac3 in freetype upstream has introduced extra spacing
between monospace glyphs by forcing integer scaling of text metrics.

[Bug 966697] [NEW] Transparent panel has themed widgets

2012-03-27 Thread Peter Hurley
Public bug reported:

GTK+ 3.4 has introduced a bug with transparent panels. Specifically,
upstream gtk+ commit 7603e6e4 breaks setting the background-image
style property to a cairo pattern. This is the method that gnome-panel
uses to simulate transparent backgrounds.
