I have this issue in Rhythmbox 0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu4.2 (updated Intrepid)
As in the attached screenshot, the progress bar doesn't move but the counter

Hello,
I'm also affected by this shutdown issue and I also hear no sound.
I tried the changes suggested by Daniel. Nothing changed.
In : System Preferences Sound, when I hit thetTest button while ALI
5451 ALI 5451 (Alsa) is selected I have this error :

I'm running Intrepid beta. Sometimes I have to cancel gksu, switch keyboard
layout, restart gksu.. That's annoying...
