[Bug 991858] Re: volume keys stop working after brightness keys are used

2012-05-03 Thread Richard Bailey
The reason the fn + audio keys don't do anything is that the commands in
~/.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml are lik

   commandamixer -q sset Master 3%+/command
      commandamixer -q sset Master 3%-/command
      commandamixer -q sset Master toggle/command

The problem with this is that amixer can't find anything on my system
with the -c1 option there.

Another problem is taht while toggling master off mutes everything,
toggling it again does not unmute everything.

So, I changed these things in lubuntu-rc.xml to invoke these scripts (I
got some of the ideas from someobody else's post from somewhere else)

volume_up.sh:

#!/bin/bash

CURRENT_STATE=`amixer -c 1 get Master | egrep 'Playback.*?\[o' | egrep
-o '\[o.+\]'`

if [[ $CURRENT_STATE == '[on]' ]]; then
#amixer -q -c 1 set Master mute
cd . # just a noop
else
amixer -q -c 1 set Master unmute
amixer -q -c 1 set Headphone unmute
amixer -q -c 1 set Speaker unmute
fi

amixer -q -c 1 sset Master 3dB+ unmute

volume_down.sh:

#!/bin/bash

CURRENT_STATE=`amixer -c 1 get Master | egrep 'Playback.*?\[o' | egrep
-o '\[o.+\]'`

if [[ $CURRENT_STATE == '[on]' ]]; then
#amixer -q -c 1 set Master mute
cd . # just a noop
else
amixer -q -c 1 set Master unmute
amixer -q -c 1 set Headphone unmute
amixer -q -c 1 set Speaker unmute
fi

amixer -q -c 1 sset Master 3dB- unmute

toggle_mute.sh:

#!/bin/bash

CURRENT_STATE=`amixer -c 1 get Master | egrep 'Playback.*?\[o' | egrep
-o '\[o.+\]'`

if [[ $CURRENT_STATE == '[on]' ]]; then
amixer -c 1 set Master mute
else
amixer -c 1 set Master unmute
amixer -c 1 set Headphone unmute
amixer -c 1 set Speaker unmute
fi

% changes iin volume work too, i just like the progression with +/- 3dB better

[Bug 991858] [NEW] volume keys stop working after brightness keys are used

2012-04-30 Thread Richard Bailey
Public bug reported:

I have this notebook SONY VAIO YB3V1E/S with AMD E-450

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Lubuntu)

When I first login, I can use the fn+ audio keys on the notebook to
adjust the volume and mute/umute the audio.

I get the small visual feedback window and the audio feedback as well.

But if I use the fn + brightness keys to adjust the brightness, then the
fn+ audio keys stop working. The brightness keys continue to work.

If I kill gnome-settings-daemon and start it again, then the fn + audio
keys start working again until I use the brightness keys again.

i guess since killing and restarting gnome-settings-daemon makes it work

[Bug 991970] [NEW] notebook goes back to sleep immediately after being resumed

2012-04-30 Thread Richard Bailey
Public bug reported:

I'm using 12.04 LTS (Lubuntu) on a Sony VAIO YB3V1E/S AMD E-450
notebook.

This didn't happend in 11.10 (I installed 11.10 originally and upgraded
it).

If I have xfce4-power-manger set to suspend on lid close, then when I
open the lid and press a key to resume it, the notebook resumes briefly
and then goes backt to sleep.

My guess is that maybe xfce4-power-manager is getting a spurrious lid
close event after or during the first wakeup.

A second key press resumes it again and then it stays awake like it's
supposed to.

If I disable the use of the lid key for suspsend and do it manually
using the sleep key (fn + F12), then I don't have the problem.

I'm using the fglrx driver from the ubuntu repository.

[Bug 991973] [NEW] backlight comes back on after screen is blaned and powered off

2012-04-30 Thread Richard Bailey
Public bug reported:

I am using 12.04 LTS (Lubuntu) on a Sony VAIO YB3V1E/S with AMD E-450.

If I tell xscreensaver to quick power off the display in blank only
mode, then when the screen is blanked, the backlight stays off only
for a minute or two and then the backlight comes back on.

I am usigng the fglrx driver from the Ubuntu repository.

I think this is an X server bug because if I turn dpms off in the
xorg.conf, and then ssh into the blanked machine and use vbetool to turn
off the backlight, then it doesn't come back on by itself.

I just did a fresh re-install of 12.04 lubuntu.

I checked it with the default opensource radeon driver and with the
fglrx driver from the repos, and it does not happen anymore with either.

So I guess it was probably an artifact of doing the upgrade from 11.10.

[Bug 992248] [NEW] xscreensaver does not turn off lcd when told to do so

Public bug reported:

I did a fresh install of lubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit on my Sony VAIO
YB3V1E/S with AMD E-450.

I cannot make xscreensaver turn off the lcd even when i check quick
power off in blank only mode. I am using blank only mode.

my workaround is to have a perl script that watches the output of

[Bug 992253] [NEW] radeon driver causes notebook fan to run always on at least medium speed

2012-04-30 Thread Richard Bailey
Public bug reported:

I have a Sony VAIO YB3V1E/S with AMD E-450.

I did a fresh install of lubuntu 64bit 12.04 LTS on it, and i noticed
that with the default opensource driver, the fan would never go below
the medium speed (it seems to have three speeds: low, medium, and high).

With the proprietary fglrx driver form the repos, the fan normally stays
on the low speed when doing easy stuff like browsing the web, etc.

I am guessing that the opensource driver probably isn't throttling down
the gpu to save power (and heat).

[Bug 803943] Re: compiz consuming a lot of cpu

2012-01-28 Thread Richard Bailey
Thanks for explaining what compiz really is.

I'm sure it's not an issue for people using real cpus. But for me on
my atom n270 netbook, I just can't spare the cycles.

I've switched to lubuntu desktop. I like it it. I think Unity 3D is
nice, and it was quite usable even on my hardware. But lubuntu is even
better.

[Bug 809060] Re: Windows stretched after setting virtual screen resolution

2012-01-08 Thread Richard Bailey
I'm pretty sure this bug is now (in 11.10) a duplicate of bug 881046

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/881046

I got the source package for xorg-server and removed the patch

219_fedora-pointer-barriers.diff

and built it and installed the xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core
packages I built

I can confirm that zoom and pan with xrandr now work for me as expected.

Before I did this, I also tried zooming (but not panning) with openbox
and it had the same problem.

So I think now the problem is this patch for the X server.

[Bug 803943] Re: compiz consuming a lot of cpu

2012-01-07 Thread Richard Bailey
I have a Dell Mini 10v (atom N270, Intel GMA 950 graphics) running 11.10
and Unity.

I sshed into it from another machine and ran top.

If I have gnome-terminal maximized and sitting at the shell prompt, then
compiz consumes a steady 2% cpu.

If I have firefox maximized (like right now with this page's tab
showing), compiz consumes a steady 3% cpu.

If I play a video in vlc or smplayer, then compiz consumes 17-18% cpu
constantly.

I don't understand why compiz needs to consume even 2 or 3% cpu when
doing nothing (firefox does the same, btw).

And I really don't undserstand why it needs to consume 17 or 18% cpu
when I'm playing a video and not doing any window management.

[Bug 911992] Re: video apps using wrong xv overlay type in Unity 2D

2012-01-05 Thread Richard Bailey
I'm not sure I really understand it as well as I thought.

In Unity 2D, i get really bad video playback unless I can force the app
to use the Video Overlay xv adapter.

And for example, in smplayer, I get blue window when it starts up,
which I guess is from the Video Overlay.

When I switch back to Unity 3D, I get good performance and the blue
background using Video Overlay.

But I also get good performance, and no blue background, (again in
smplayer) using the default xv, or using Textured Video.

So I really have no idea why the performance is worse in Unity 2D.

[Bug 911992] [NEW] video apps using wrong xv overlay type in Unity 2D

2012-01-04 Thread Richard Bailey
Public bug reported:

I have a Dell Mini 10v with Intel GMA 950 graphics. I'm running Ubuntu
11.10.

My package version of xserver-xorg-video-intel is 2:2.15.901-1ubuntu2.1

I changed from Unity 3D to 2D, and the performance of video playback
apps became very bad (adobe flash, vlc, mplayer, smplayer).

I found that xvinfo was listing two video overlay adpaters. The first
was Textured Video and the 2nd was Video Overlay.

I assumed the problem was they were using Textured Video when they
should be using Video Overlay.

I was able to tell smplayer and mplayer to use Video Overlay, and
their performance returned to normal. I was not able to figure out how
to tell adobe flash or vlc which adapter to use.

My theory is that compiz in Unity 3D is acquiring exclusive use of the
Textured Video overlay, so that the apps don't try to use it. But in
Unity 2D metacity isn't using it, so the video playback apps naively use
the first available xv adapter they find.

I think the solution would be to change the driver to report the Video
Overlay adapter first and the Textured Video adapter second.

[Bug 809060] Re: Windows stretched after setting virtual screen resolution

2011-10-18 Thread Richard Bailey
I think I'm seeing the same problem in a different way. I'm trying to
scale instead of pan.

I have a Dell Mini 10V netbook running 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot fianl
release, and I was using this script (worked fine with the old netbook-
launcher-efl) to scale the screen to 1024x768 when some app shows a
dialog box that doesn't fit on the 1024x600 display.

#!/bin/sh

if xrandr | head -n1 | grep -q '1024 x 600'; then
  xrandr --output LVDS1 --scale 1.0x1.28
else
  xrandr --output LVDS1 --scale 1.0x1.0
fi

When I switch to 1024x768 scaled, it draws ok, but I can't move the mouse below
where the virtual Y=600 is on the screen. So I can't get at the OK button or
whatever I'm trying to get at that didn't fit on 1024x600.

BTW, I really like Unity now and wouldn't go back to netbook-launcher-
efl, even if I could.

[Bug 620318] Re: Wireless slow to reconnect after suspend and resume

2011-02-04 Thread Richard Bailey
I have a Dell Inspiron Mini 10V and was having the problem with having
to wait 30 seconds to get reconnected to my wifi AP after resuming.

I'm always suspending and resuming in the same place.

I'm running 10.10 now and had the problem in 10.04 LTS also.

The workaround mentioned above (commenting out the lines in /usr/lib/pm-
utils/sleep.d/55NetworkManager) works for me. Thanks!

[Bug 274405] Re: network manager slow to reconnect after suspend/resume

2011-02-03 Thread Richard Bailey
I have a Dell Inspiron Mini 10V and am using the Broadcom STA wifi
driver and network manager.

When I suspend my computer (aka sleep, aka suspend to ram) and then wake
it up in the same place, I have to wait about 30 seconds for the wifi to
reconnect.

I am running 10.10 now. I had the same problem in 10.04 LTS.

I don't remember if the problem occurred in the 9.x release I was
running briefly before 10.04 LTS came out.

[Bug 212441] Re: Mediatomb Init Script not working : upnp error -117

2009-07-24 Thread Richard Bailey
Unfortunately the workaround proposed in the mediatomb faq no longer
works on Jaunty as detailed by comment #4.

I also tried setting eth0 in the interface file and tried removing network
manager and tried moving mediatomb to start after NetworkManager in rc2 (the
apparent default runlevel) but none of those worked.
I also tried a script with a sleep of 60 seconds then it would restart
mediatomb and that also didn't work.

I wanted to emulate the behaviour of the ntp daemon which seems to start
with the network. On further investigation I found the directories if-
up.d and if-down.d in /etc/network which contain scripts that run when
the network comes up and goes down respectively.

Emulating a line from the ntp script I created two scripts for
mediatomb. The one in if-up.d executes:

invoke-rc.d mediatomb restart

and in if-down.d it executes:

invoke-rc.d mediatomb stop

After I rebooted my machine mediatomb now starts up automatically with
the network.

I'm attaching a tar archive with the two scripts, you can cd to
/etc/network and untar the archive there.

Last thing, the links in the rcX directories are now pointless so I
removed mine by executing:

sudo update-rc.d -f mediatomb remove

And finally, you can always check /var/log/mediatomb.log for details on
if mediatomb is running.

I'm installing Feisty on my work laptop and this confused me. Also,
answers on ubuntuforums.org were not convincing and went both ways as to

Too bad it's still not adjusted since Dapper but I think changing to

For large disks/partitions fdisk cannot work with the entire available

change the partition table type to GPT instead of MSDOS. I don't know

[Bug 102973] Re: dmraid looking for raid45 when kernel uses raid456

2007-04-09 Thread Richard Bailey
Hi Chad, I'm sorry to say that this most likely wont be fixed in time
for Feisty's release. In order to have a proper and stable release
different parts of Ubuntu have to be frozen at different times, and the
kernel was frozen back on April 5th:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FeistyReleaseSchedule

Since this bug depends on a module being in the kernel, either raid45,
dm-raid45 or raid456, this means this bug wont be fixed in time for
Feisty. However, don't drop interest in the bug, we have to make sure it
gets into Feisty +1 due in October.

Because of this I'm unassigning myself from the bug and subscribing to
both this and the one you indicated at

[Bug 93810] Re: dmraid not starting on system boot

2007-04-05 Thread Richard Bailey
I do not have access to a feisty installation at hand but can someone
check what order dmraid is run relative to udev? You can check this is
/etc/rcS. dmraid should be initialised *after* udev for this same
reason. There was a bug about this in debian that was fixed, I opened a
bug here but that was dismissed since this issue was no longer occurring
at that time. If it has re-emerged a simple fix would be to move dmraid
to initialize after udev in rcS.

[Bug 98846] Re: dmraid starts before udev in rcS.d

2007-04-02 Thread Richard Bailey
I did it this way because debian has both udev and dmraid at different
points in rcS, dmraid's point (what I'm trying to set to 11) is
dependent on ubuntu's place in rcS.d. This way, when dmraid needs to be
sync'd/merged again from debian, it will still remove a non S11 link if
it exists.

The update-rc.d -f remove is in preparation to run:
dh_installinit -p dmraid -- start 11 S . start 51 0 6 .
later on in the rules.
It used to be:
dh_installinit -p dmraid -- start 04 S . start 51 0 6 .

Without that dmraid gets two entries in rcS.d... I've tested it

I'm a green packager so I'll take any advice you give, but I was
working on the premise that the call to dh_installinit always exists in
the rules so in subsequent upgrades the update-rc.d -f remove will get
called and dh_installinit will put back the file.

[Bug 93810] Re: dmraid not starting on system boot

2007-03-26 Thread Richard Bailey
I just checked and yes, dmraid is initializing before udev in rcS.d.
What this means is that dmraid sets up the devices in /dev/mapper, then
udev is run and it completely rebuilds /dev, throwing out what dmraid
did. Currently udev is initialized at S10 and dmraid at S04, it should
be changed to S11.

Can someone who is currently experiencing this error test with this new deb?
It's the same upstream version, the only difference is that dmraid is
initialised at S11 instead of S04, i.e. after udev.
I appended my username to the end of the file in case others want to try to
build a deb and attached it to this bug we wont get confused.

[Bug 65809] Re: Delete imported images from the camera doesn't

2007-03-22 Thread Richard Bailey
I got that impression from reading my camera's manual. It did not
explicitly say that you can't delete over PTP, but it did say to use PTP
only for printing (PictBridge) and use USB for PC. And since I got this
error it just fit to me. In the USB mode things work as expected.

I also used gThumb on a Dakota Digital Single Use camera that gThumb
supports in PTP mode, but there also it does not delete.

However, according to this blog post by a gphoto2 contributor it seems that
deleting over PTP is possible, but not in all cameras:
http://www.advogato.org/person/Marcus/diary.html?start=105

I'm aware that you're also a gphoto2 contributor. Hopefully gThumb will
detect the delete-ability of cameras and enable/disable this option as
needed.

[Bug 65809] Re: Delete imported images from the camera doesn't

2007-03-21 Thread Richard Bailey
Hi, it's been quite some time since I experienced this bug, however
since then I realised that this option only applies when the camera is
in USB Mass Storage Mode and not PTP Mode, which is what I was in when I
got this error.

From my limited understanding of how things are supposed to work I
believe that in PTP Mode the memory is read-only. In this case the
option to Delete imported images from the camera should not even be
selectable since it will never happen.

iriverter depends on java-gcj-compat or sun-java5-bin, but if sun-
java5-bin is installed iriverter does not work. It should not depend on
sun-java5-bin at all.

** Affects: iriverter (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
