I think your problem is nothing to do with this BIOS bug.
Youn are giving a boot priority to the internal drive before the optic drive.
You should override the boot order by pressing a certain key such as F2, F8 and
F9 just after the booting.
Refer the manual of your machine to find out this boot

Is this the cause of my problem?
I have noticed that since upgrading to Ubuntu 9.04, when running Boinc,
my CPUs are running about 14 degrees C hotter (at about 52C to 56C,
compared with roughly 38C to 43C before). When not running Boinc and
not using other apps, temperatures look much as they
I've discovered that the behaviour of the CPU frequency settings has
changed. The monitor applet offers 4 settings: conservative,
ondemand, performance, and powersave.
Previously, the ondemand setting only pushed cpu frequency up to 100%
when I invoked a foreground process, like indexing a lot

installation, plus one or two kde programs, like konsole, klipper,
knotify, and kaddressbook.
Killing the process seemed to be OK. I don't know if it recurs after a

Can group memberships not be sorted out as part of the installation?

I have a thought:
maybe the installer is not using absolute pathnames and it was confused
by an old version in /usr/local/bin ? That ought not to happen though.

I did that, but it didn't solve anything. The machine was indeed left

OK. But is this because 0.5.4-6 is incompatible with evince (i.e.
evince doesn't work with it) or is it just that something in the
packaging system is checking for 0.5.4-0ubuntu8 specifically?
If it's the latter I would consider that a bug.

But that presumably means I can't use Claws-mail, which is a fork of and
is superior to the Ubuntu-provided Sylpheed.
Or is there a way of getting Claws to sit happily with everything else?
