OK, found some problems. The /etc/kde4/kdm directory is empty except for
kdm.options, and I can't reinstall kdm from kde 3. I get the same error
message after uninstalling and reinstalling kdm from kde 3, though the
actual error may be different. Also, doing a dpkg --purge kdm-kde4
doesn't remove
Are you sure all the new kde4 packages depend on libungif? Trying to
install it results in a huge list of kde4 (plus misc other) packages to
be removed:

I searched, but couldn't find a bug report. As of now, I can't start X
due to a missing /dev/input/*, I have no sound, since the /dev/snd/*

when kdm fails to load ;) Anyway, running failsafeXServer directly
doesn't load bpx. It starts to load, but then aborts. I included the log
xorg.log from that session as well, just in case you want to look at it.

fact that the MAC address of the old NIC was hard coded in a file,
though I can't remember which one now. Once I removed it from there, I
again had eth0. Sorry, I know that's probably not much help.

OK, I take that back. The problem is that cupsys needs a dependency on
hpijs so it will also get installed. That's the package that contains
libhpip.so.0 and libhpmud.so.0. If these aren't installed, printing to
HP printers fails.

I'm seeing something similar, I think, in gutsy. After recent xorg
updates, I can't login with any user via either GDM or KDM, except the
two failsafe options. I enter the user/pass, and get just the busy
cursor. If I login to the failsafe terminal, I can run kdestart or
whatever and that works.
Again, when, or is, this going to be fixed in Gutsy? The problem is
still occurring there.

So I take back what I said earlier. It doesn't work, even with the
modified asound.conf, nor does it work with no asound.conf/.asoundrc.
With no asound.conf, I get basic functionality for one application. In
other words, basic 2-channel sound works, one app at a time on a card

Binary package hint: evolution
I have selected the option to remember this password for all password
dialogs in Evolution 2.8.0. However, each time evolution needs a
password, the dialog is displayed with remember this password already

I can confirm this. They aren't mouse buttons, but the events do appear
on the mouse event interface. I was able to make this work with udev
rules in 5.10 and below, but in Dapper and above, this fails. I have a
similar bug open for this. See #39509.

Use a LX700 keyboard (MX3100 combo, others may be affected) plugged in via USB.
Boot the system and log in graphically.

On further investigation, pressing any of the multimedia buttons crashes

Well, I spoke too soon. I was able to get in and out of an app twice,
but after a reboot, the system just hard locks again. I'll keep trying
to capture the oops or whatever is happening.

As a test, I upgraded to the 8776 driver last night. The system no
longer locks. There are still other problems, like the new evdev blows
chunks and fails to initialize about half the time, but that's a
separate issue.

Still trying to replicate. So far, X either just hard locks, or using
pci=conf1, X segfaults with the above error. I may see about relocating
this system so I can hook a console cable to it.
