I have lost about a month of my time with this bug!! I thought I was doing something wrong with UUID or GPT vs MBR or ZFS or ... It creamed my live benchmark system that I had spent considerable time installing and customizing. Just today, I stumbled onto this archaic bug report, which remains unfixed after seven years! Since my system has several nvme drives, I can't just unplug them to work around the problem. Public bug reported: I observe two faults in the Ubuntu 14.04LTS system monitor: 1. If a CPU is marked offline, the system monitor does not report any higher-numbered online CPUs. E.g.,: a. Run system monitor - it reports 8 CPUs. b. Mark CPU 3 offline, via: echo 0 | sudo tee /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu3/online c. Restart system monitor: It now reports only 3 CPUS (1,2,3). The system monitor display not change immediately, so I suspect the immediate failure is caused at system monitor initialization, presumably because it assumes that the first offline CPU indicates the end of CPUs for this system. Which is not true, of course. 2. In the system monitor display, CPUs are numbered 1...N, for an N-CPU system. This is incorrect, because CPUs are numbered from 0, not 1. I just installed kubuntu 13.10, and ran into exactly the same failure. I removed ALL texmf files, and reinstalled from scratch. Same failure. Removed and reinstalled with install-tl-ubuntu and get the same failure. One possibility is that the APL385.ttf font entry for diamond is either wrong, or has some subtle problem that causes gnome-terminal to get the scaling wrong. Attached is a screen shot from Open Office. In that, you can see that the diamond character displays correctly at different sizes (i.e., slightly larger than the iota and rho) when using Times New Roman, but displays much smaller when using the fixed-width font. From this example, I see that the problem does not really lie in scaling (because the fixed-width font also scales, as we can see when looking at 12pt and 40pt), BUT the character is being rendered considerably smaller than it should be. I.e., it should fill the line. I tried installing 10.04 from the CD (day of release version, I think) on a system with one SATA drive and one PATA drive. The SATA drive was clean; the PATA drive has an older version of Ubuntu and Win2k installed on it. The install script showed ONLY the SATA drive - it did not give me any opportunity to use the PATA drive. This is the first good news I've heard on this topic in many moons! I'm running Intrepid 8.10, with local kernel mods (PAPI) that I don't want to mess with at present, so upgrading the kernel at this juncture is not something I want to do, at least in the near-term. If someone can give me some assurance that: 1. The new fglrx driver is likely to work with 8.10, and 2. The crash is likely due to the old fglrx driver, rather than to the linux kernel. then, I'll give the new fglrx code a try. Otherwise, it'll have to wait until I finish my current project and benchmarks... Or, if someone can assure me that the kernel/X upgrades are a definite prerequisite for the fix, then I'll at least know where I'm at with this. Thanks. I am using an AMD64, dual-head, with fglrx. It dies on switch users, of course. From what hede says, dual-head is not the problem, and it just seems to be fglrx itself. [I do not understand the implications of abatcher's xinit xterm -- :1 vt8 comment in this regard. Perhaps we can convince the MyLightWorksFine people at AMD that there are virtues to having multiple users signed on at once. It doesn't look like we'll get it fixed, otherwise. 1. I use multiple users for security reasons - I have development accounts that have access to source code, and I try to keep those accounts distinct from my generic email/web account, etc. Part of this has to do with keeping my data out of client areas, and vice versa. It's not security in the secrecy sense, but in the safety of different accounts when my fumblefingers err, just as we avoid running as root. 2. Hede uses multiple users to get full-screen access and access to normal desktop without logging in/out. Very convenient. I would appreciate it if the AMD people responsible for fglrx can give us some statement as to why these are not virtuous activities. I don't particularly care about graphics performance, but definitely DO want
(1) switch-user to work properly (which, at present, crashes my system), and
(2) dual-head support to work properly.
So, I may not need the apparently useless drivers from AMD/ATI, if they are the
root
of the problem, IF I can get the above features to work properly without fglrx.
Someone claimed that someone from ATI/AMD said that nobody uses switch-user,
so we don't have to fix it. This statement is rumor, so I don't want to beat
up on
ATI/AMD (perhaps), but let me assure you that the need to run concurrent users
with different permissions is very critical to my work. If NVIDIA can support
the above two requirements, I would switch to them in an instant, IFF
they work. My past experience with NVIDIA does not give me hope here.

If ATI/AMD would just publish their device (GPU) specifications, we could
do the open-source thing and life would be good. At present, I have NO
good suppliers of GPUs to go to. This is as bad as the mainframe world
of the 1970s, when IBM refused to publish their I/O channel specifications,
in the hope of keeping their monopoly. Perhaps someone should sue
ATI/AMD and NVIDIA to get them to publish their interface specifications.

BTW, these problems, from what I've seen, may not be specific to ATI/AMD or
NVIDIA, because it seems to appear with both GPUs. If so, my apologies to
the appropriate vendor(s). If not, will you people please get off your
butt and fix things?

I just installed today's (2008-11-28) new patches to 8.10 Intrepid, and I still get the crash I noted earlier: Attempting to select another user in the user switcher crashes the system immediately. One possible idea: The /home directory was imported from an earlier release, so perhaps some files are missing, or present when they should be missing, or permissions are wrong on something? I disabled the third-party and proprietary hardware drivers (System/Administration/Hardware Drivers), but the system still crashes on. I think the guest session is not relevant, inasmuch as the system crashes instantly if I attempt to switch users, too. Well, I now agree that the bug is still there: after a recent update, if restricted drivers are enabled (ATI fglrx), the system crashes immediately after System/Logout/Change User or on an attempt to change users with the Fast User Switch applet. If restricted drivers are disabled, the user switching works OK. I am experiencing similar problems with a dual-head AMD-64 SMP box with ATI video card. I have a solid failure, with atomix: the screen does not update properly (see attachment for visual after new game. If I minimize/maximize the window, it refreshes properly. If I move another window over the atomix window, it refreshes properly (when the atomix window reappears). This fails in dual-head mode with fglrx restricted video drivers enabled, and in single-head mode with those drivers disabled. I'll check this again after a reboot with disabled drivers, and see what /var/log/Xorg.0.log has to say about video driver. As with Shoofy, I carried over my home directory from an Intrepid Alpha system. Me, too! I'm running an ATI HD 3450, with Xinerama enabled and apparently working properly. HOWEVER, any attempt to log off, or to change users by either the user switcher or little-green-man menu, result in black screens and hang. Hard reset is the only way out: ctrl-alt-bksp doesn't fix it. After I file this, I'm going to see if restarting gdm from an ssh, started BEFORE the logoff, helps at all. I'm running Xinerama, and ATI accelerated drivers are marked as in-use, but DISABLED, by the System/Admin/Hardware Drivers page. I'm trying to run GNOME, across the board, for all users, but am not sure how to force that. The drivers were installed by envy-gt a few minutes ago. All Ubuntu-based updates are installed, to the best of my knowledge. The various patches described by Ilya, etc., appear to have already been made by Ubuntu system upgrades. The Stefan patch appears to have already been made, too, but I'm not sure about any GDM patches. I am running GDM... This is getting on my nerves, because EVERY TIME I dare to hit the system upgrade button, X goes off the air for days or more. I just replaced my NVIDIA card with an ATI card, in the hope that it would be more house-broken, but instead, it just looks to be also-broken. I am reluctant to do so, because the last several times I've done it, my Nvidia X11 went to bit heaven, and it took a few days of screwing around to get the dual-monitor support working properly again. 2. I enabled /etc/default/apport, but did NOT yet restart the box. I'll do that in a second. This is on two up-to-date Hardy systems, both with Nvidia chipsets on ASUS motherboards, with SATA hard drives. One system absolutely refused to boot after the Hardy upgrade. This did not make me very happy. The other system stalls in the initramfs world about 2 times out of 3 on a power-on or reboot sequence. What did make me happy was a crude workaround (which I do NOT consider a proper fix), of adding all_generic_ide to the boot stanza in /boot/grub/menu.lst: kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-18-generic root=UUID=1e3fbd55-5dfa- 4cee-b9c7-8bc8bd3982ff ro splash all_generic_ide The hang has not happened since then. I'm having similar problems on two ASUS boxes, both with SATA drives attached. One of them, an ASUS V8M-MX/S, refuses to boot AT ALL after the Hardy upgrade. It always drops into the initramfs screen. Adding all_generic_ide fixed it, in the sense that it now boots, but I have no idea if this has resulted in degraded performance, etc. The other box, also an ASUS, but I don't have the MB name handy, is an Opteron-based board. It frequently requires several hard boots (reset button) to boot after power-up, stopping in the same screen as above. Also, reboots from the shutdown menu frequently stall the same way. I have NOT tried all_generic_ide, but will do that and see if it helps. This is irritating, and I'd like to see it fixed. If someone has fault-isolation suggestions (NOT workarounds - I want this fixed properly), I'm happy to try them, within reason. I have the same problem. The system stalls at during reboot at waiting for root file system, and eventually (a minute or two later) drops into initramfs(?). This often happens when the system does a soft reboot. After power-on, I usually have to reboot 2 or 3 times before it takes off. Looks like race condition of some sort. I'm running on a two-core Opteron, with latest Hardy fixes as of 2008-05-04. Still fails as of 2008-04-06, with this day's upgrades.

I've observed the following:
1. Some upgrades disable the nvidia graphics driver, dropping me back into
680x480 land.
The way I fixed these was to use the command-line apt-get to reinstall the
nvidia drivers
again, then do (I think...) nvidia-install again, then configure them.
2. The system doesn't properly sense Samsung SyncMaster 191T settings, although
it is claimed to be Plug'n'Play. I'm confused at the moment about the LG
226WA,
but I think it does better.
At any rate, some updates seem to lose either monitor characteristics, or
nvidia driver,
or both.
3. Built-in table for above monitors don't seem to exist. I have to pick generic
TFT size setting, but that looks to work ok, despite being a nuisance.
[The following is probably unrelated bug, but just in case it's
relevant...]:
4. After soft reboot (from shutdown menu), and sometimes on system power-on,
the system never completes booting. It drops into initramfs(?) after
thinking
over the root file system stuff during bootup.
It says ata_id[4091] main: HDIO_GET_ID... {can't read my handwriting...}
failed for
/dev/.tmp/8-16.
Hard reboot via reset button has fixed this boot failure, thus far.

Hmm. This is a few minutes after the above post. I just connected a laptop running a 7.04 version of Ubuntu to the same network, and it quite happily prints the PDF file from evince on the laptop to the Lexmark printer. AND, after that print job completed, I was able to print OK from the desktop connected directly to the Lexmark. I just upgraded CUPS on two 7.10 systems yesterday, then tried to network the Lexmark Optra E310 and an Epson Stylus Photo 800, one on each system. The Epson box's system Gives the problem connecting to the CUPS server error message when I open the System-Administration-Printing window. The other box appears to have several faults, which may or may not be related: The Lexmark box merely evaporates any output directed at it from evince. However, I CAN print a test OK from the System-Administration-Printing window. Also, printing via lpr works OK. I tried converting the PDF file I wanted to print into PostScript using evince output to file, but that results in a PostScript file that kills the printer with blinky yellow error lights. [Bug 110804] Re: Lexmark Optra E310 not work in edgy, feisty
I'm running, or trying to run, an Optra E310 in 7.10 (I think). I had selected the Optra E310 driver. No go: dies with the inode permission bug. I tried stopping apparmor, with no better luck. I then tried generic PostScript foomatic driver: no go. I then tried generic PostScript (non-foomatic) driver. This sort of works, but a fair number of documents make the printer light blink for a few seconds, then the yellow printer error light blanks, then the rest is silence. The job is then marked as completed. I would guess this means the generic PS driver is buggy. On one of the above, dmesg gets: [17972.993541] lp0: ECP mode messages. Not sure if that's good or bad. Suggestions/recommendations welcome.
