Just for the record, I have uploaded a new version of youtube-dl to
Debian unstable.

It would be super nice if people pulled it from there (or from testing,
if the recent phantomjs recommends can't be satisfied/is not desired).

Actually, it would be super nice to have it updated to avoid people
pestering upstream.

I am the maintainer of youtube-dl on the Debian side and my work is mirrored
on Ubuntu, but I would love if my uploads of highly volatile packages were
also reflected on Ubuntu.

Especially a package like youtube-dl.

For one reason or another, I did not receive LocutusOfBorg's messages...
Strange... I only found out about them coming here to the bug log.

Anyway, I grabbed telegram-desktop and the voip library from the next
release and it works fine on my system.

Having it uploaded to zesty would make this work for the potentially
large fraction of telegram users that install from the official
repositories.

As a use case, I can easily install that on both of my parents
computers.

No, I don't have it.

BTW, regarding the assistive technologies messages, I removed the
corresponding packages. I may install them a bit later to test if they
make any difference.

BTW, I am not using any indicator applet at the moment. I may also
test with them, just for test purposes (but I'm not using them on
Debian also).

When I start telegram-desktop, the window never shows up, differently
from the same package in my Debian testing/sid computer.

In both computers I am using MATE as the desktop, but the versions
differ (Debian is using 1.16, IIRC, while ubuntu is using 1.18).

Oh, I see. I read the original bug report and now I see that this is
still being worked on. To the packagers, can we, OTOH, have a version

BTW, Jens, thank you so very much for maintaining shotwell. It is only
photo manager that I know of that is lightweight even when used

I'm really sorry if I'm making any (social) mistake by using a long
habit of reporting wishlist bugs to ubuntu the way that I do it in
Debian. Feel free to point me the correct direction of doing it the
ubuntu-way...

That being said, Ubuntu's zesty version of shotwell is considerably
behind the version that is currently in Debian (testing has upstream
version 0.24.5, disguised as 0.25.4+really0.24.5-0.1) while my up-to-
date zesty system has only 0.22.0+git20160108.r1.f2fb1f7-0ubuntu3.

Would it be possible to get rid of the delta (as far as feasible)
between Debian and Ubuntu?

Hi.

The package python{,3}-selenium uses a hardcoded path of
'/usr/lib/chromium/chromedriver' when instantiating a Chrome webdriver.

That path is correct for Debian (in particular, it was directly
inherited from https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=805733#5), but since Ubuntu uses chromium-browser
instead of Debian's chromium naming. The package chromium-chromedriver
in Ubuntu installs the webdriver at '/usr/lib/chromium-
browser/chromedriver'.

There needs to be a synchronization between the selenium Python module
and the webdriver package.

I just uploaded a new version to Debian's sid that fixes a lot of problems

BTW, the users on older versions of Ubuntu are experiencing problems (I've
been flooded with emails) and this package in particular should be
backported.

I think that I found a way to (at least partially) reproduce the
problem: if I press _ (underscore) after I have selected packages to be
(automatically) uninstalled (so that they are purged instead of just
uninstalled), then I get the segfault that described before.

You can usually grab the newest versions of youtube-dl from Debian
unstable, as that is where I'm doing my job. I think that I can set up
something (say a reminder) to ask Ubuntu to sync from Debian every
time that I upload a new version.

 Second, there is nothing automatic about this. The user must explicitly
 download a new version (and even provide the password). If he does not

In my Debian packages, I don't consider the option of removing the
update, as it is, exactly as you say, a strictly voluntary option of
the user.

I consider this the equivalent of removing the option of the user to
download python packages via pip, perl packages via cpan, node.js
packages via npm, eclipse extensions etc.

So, as long as I maintain youtube-dl in Debian, the Debian package
won't be patched and will be as similar to upstream as possible (and,
in fact, I have avoided patching youtube-dl in Debian and submitted my
changes upstream directly *before* I incorporated them in Debian).

 This just means that youtube-dl gets useless early (or even before) the
 distribution is released as I do not think it qualifies for a SRU. Then
 the users must download the software from upstream defeating the purpose
 of a distribution.

Indeed. This kind of software is a moving target. See my long comments
on Debian's NEWS file regarding the changes in Youtube's provision of
videos with audio and video in separate. The next upload that I do
will have fixes for vimeo, as they have changed things.

In other words, web scrapers consist of a class of packages that don't
really qualify for an long term release. The same thing happens with
browsers, but a big browser is simply a very large program, while the
program that I package is a small one that people can even opt to not
ship in a release.

What do all the big browsers and the web scrapers have in common? They
manipulate changing code provided by 3rd parties.

 I'm using Ubuntu 12.10. And youtube-dl version is youtube-dl
 2012.09.27-1
 
  I saw in youtube-dl package that it will support videos to download
 from dailymotion.com  too. But when i tried to download this lamborghini
 drift video i gave this command in terminal
 
 youtube-dl
 http://www.dailymotion.com/in/relevance/search/lamborghini+drift/1#video=x2rqtd;
 
 But it is showing some warning and at last it shows invalid url as shown
 below.

Indeed, that's the URL of a page with results of a search, not the page of a
particular video.

 Please help me

Please, try with a page of a video and see if that works.

1 - They have some important features there (e.g., bob deinterlacing, a lot
of work fixing subtitles etc).

*and*

2 - It would make packaging significantly easier, as they are churning out
new patches to third-party libraries that we already have in Debian (but
not necessarity in patched form), and it would take coordination with
maintainers of other packages, so that we all have compatible stuff.

From handbrake's point of view, it is certainly the faster route to continue
the development patching the libraries that they need (and bundle such
libraries), but it is a major burden for distributions that want to have
handbrake available in their repositories.

More frequent releases from their part would be so much appreciated.

Any kind of help is mostly appreciated, especially when talking to upstream
and:

* pushing the lots of patches that they have accumulated to other projects.
* getting newer snapshots of handbrake to be packaged.

This is not a package that is so trivial to make available on a distribution
and I have spent many weeks trying to get it to a point where it was able to
be included in Debian.

Debian opinion != FSF opinion

Furthermore, vrms works by looking at the section of the package to
base its decisions on. If it reports something incorrectly, then there
are two possibilities (which not exclude one from another):

1. there is a bug in vrms
2. there is a bug in the packaging, where an incorrect section of the
package is declared.

AFAIK, usbmount was never part of any default system and it would have
to be deliberately installed by the user.

Again: usbmount is just a simple package. It has nothing to do with
the automatic mounting of usb drives that most desktop environments
provide.

The new version of usbmount has a very unabashed description that it
is not for regular users.

Can you provide me with some example URL?

I am the maintainer of youtube-dl and I, personally, grab all my videos
with the -t option and never had any issue like this that you mentioned.

It is funny that this would happen, as the filter on characters are set
up to only allow what python returns as `string.digits` or
`string.ascii_letters`. There may be, though, some corner case with the
escaping of unicode characters, but I'm yet to see that.

Hi, Rolf.

Just for the record, now that I read things more closely, this is an
expected behavior: -t downgrades everything to ASCII characters or
digits. If you want to preserve diacritics, then, please, use the -l
option instead of -t.

Ah, ok...

The title of the video is empty and -t concatenates the empty string
with an hyphen and then the video id... This works fine with new
upstream versions... I will package one and upload to my ppa.

I didn't use any browser. Just used youtube-dl. And I guess that my browser
*can* show Hebrew letters.

But this, of course, explains why the title appeared as an empty string: the
-t option only cares about ASCII characters. And this is by design.

If you want to get any other characters, you have to use -l.

 I get an error even if I not using -t, and even with Video's with English 
 title.
 (E.G. youtube-dl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIMO0eglEJA)

Just for the record, I am using a pure Debian sid system (updated twice
per day) and the font package version
0.71.2-0ubuntu7+phasedbeta7+mono+condensed.

I get this problem of an italic bold with plain xterm (having just
installed the font package). OTOH, rxvt-unicode doesn't have this
problem, but the font looks a little bit strange with a pure

urxvt -fn 'xft:UbuntuBeta Mono'

because the bold text with an urxvt with the command above doesn't seem
to be using bold fonts (this may be due to me not configuring things
correctly yet).

And JFTR#2, in my systems I use all terminals with black backround and
white colors (contrary to, say, gnome-terminal defaults).

Just for the record, what version of usbmount are you people using?

Or are you having problems with mounting USB devices (which is a
completely different issue from having the *package* usbmount failing to
recognize devices)?

usbmount relies on the kernel/udev to do its job and, generally,
problems with usbmount are not really directly usbmount problems.

Just for the record #2, in a general, vanilla {K,X,L,}Ubuntu system, you
wouldn't have usbmount installed unless you install it explicitly, as
usbmount is a lower level program meant for
minimalistic/embedded/headless systems.

I am afraid that I can't do anything with this situation. The package
has not even been installed and a userspace program like rtorrent
generally can't cause a reboot by itself.

The line

libtorrent11 0.12.6-2 failed to install/upgrade: error writing to
'standard output': Success

in particular tells me that probably libtorrent wasn't correctly
unpacked. Can you purge both libtorrent11 and rtorrent, clean your
package cache, and tell again what happens if you reinstall rtorrent?

Just for the record, here is a Me too reply here.

I get *very* serious visual corruptions here (and, yes, I do have a 865G
also).

First, the Live CD tries to boot with Unity and it falls back to the
classic mode. Unfortunately, there are still some compositing features
enabled and I have to try hard to get to a terminal so that I can
replace whatever window manager is running at that time with metacity
with compositing disabled (just for the record, I used: metacity
--replace --no-composite).

It seems that we have some bad interaction among xserver-xorg-video-
intel  libdrm  mesa.

I am attaching a screenshot to show something that I see. I assure you
that this is one of the most readable screenshots that I could take.
