I could resolve this issue by upgrading the printer firmware to latest version 1.40. [Bug 1850127] [NEW] Unable to print with Brother printer since upgrade to Ubuntu 19.10
Public bug reported: I have recently bought a new color laser printer (Brother HL-L8260CDW), which is connected through wLAN. It works like a charm under Ubuntu 19.04, but refuses to print since the upgrade to stock Ubuntu 19.10. I can reach it via ping and through its HTTP config page from the same computer. During my collection of relevant bug information I discovered the following error messages: 1. Some print filter was unable to grep /etc/cups/ppd/Brother_HL_L8260CDW_series.ppd This file was rw for user "root" and r for group "lp", but not accessible to others. I have made it world readable for testing purposes, but I still can't print. 2. I checked /var/log/syslog for app-armour errors but found none which would be related to cups and/or printing 3. After fixing the permission issue, the new error message is "File \'\' not found" and "Unable to add document to print job.", both of which are too cryptic for me to dig further into this by myself. Attached to this bug report I send the following pieces of information: - output from "/usr/lib/cups/backend/snmp 10.0.0.14" (snmp.txt) - output from "lpinfo -v" (lpinfo.txt) - output from "avahi-browse -a -v -t -r" and "avahi-browse -a -v -c -r" (avahi.txt) ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 19.10 Package: cups 2.2.12-2ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.3.0-19.20-generic 5.3.1 Uname: Linux 5.3.0-19-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia_modeset nvidia ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu8 Architecture: amd64 CupsErrorLog: E [28/Oct/2019:10:40:04 +0100] [Job 112] File \'\' not found E [28/Oct/2019:10:40:12 +0100] [Job 112] Unable to add document to print job. [Bug 1719312] [NEW] qtcreator main menu invisible/inaccessible after ui designer session
Public bug reported: As soon as I edit the ui designer page of qtcreator, the title menu becomes invisible and inaccessible. It does not even reappear after I leave ui designer page, a window resize also doesn't help, restarting qtcreator brings everything back to normal until I enter ui design mode the next time. No obvious error messages are shown if I start and run qtcreator from the command line. The system is fully updated and uses stock version of all relevant binaries, libraries, and config files. The command 'lsb_release -rd' returns: Description:Ubuntu 17.04 Release:17.04 The command 'apt-cache policy qtcreator' returns: qtcreator: Installed: 4.1.0-3ubuntu1 Candidate: 4.1.0-3ubuntu1 Version table: *** 4.1.0-3ubuntu1 500 500 http://at.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu zesty/universe amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status The problem already exists with minimal projects, i.e. I can reproduce it by starting qtcreator, creating a new 'QT Widgets Application', using the default values in all further input fields until the project is created, then double clicking on mainwindow.ui in the file browser on the left hand side. As soon as the ui designer has started, the menu is gone until the next restart of qtcreator. Expected behavior: regardless of UI actions I have a fully populated menu in the title bar which becomes visible as soon as I hover the mouse pointer over the title bar of the qtcreator window. Observed behavior: after performing the actions stated above, I still have a window title bar with window manager decoration, the qtcreator menu, however, is gone. ** Affects: appmenu-qt5 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1719312 Title: qtcreator main menu invisible/inaccessible after ui designer session To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/appmenu-qt5/+bug/1719312/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1584533] Re: Lenovo X220 unable to wlan after resume from sleep
In the mean time, there was a linux kernel upgrade in Ubuntu 16.04, and whatever that kernel changed, I have not had connection failure ever since. I would therefore cautiously mark this issue resolved for now. About the suggested BIOS upgrade: there appears to be something messed up on Lenovo's webpage: while version 1.42 is stated as available, the download links provided on that page will provide version 1.40. [Bug 1584533] Re: Lenovo X220 unable to wlan after resume from sleep
Thanks for your reply, before I followed your recommended steps I did a system upgrade as recommended by ubuntu update manager. Since this also updated systemd which is AFAIK pretty basic to the system, I tested both after the upgrade AND after the switch to this mainline kernel you recommended. Behavior became much stranger with the regular system update, and in both cases (i.e. ubuntu kernel and mainline kernel) the system behaved more or less the same, as far as wlan is concerned: - After a reboot everything looks normal, wlan comes on even before login, and stays intact after login. network manager applet in top bar shows wlan networks plus the one I am connected to. - After a sleep/wakeup, network manager shows loss of wlan connection. No existing wlan networks are shown in wireless network list. Opening "connect to hidden network" menu lists all networks I ever connected to, but will not allow me to hit connect with any of them in the list, connect button is grayed out. - Now here comes the freaky part: in SOME of these instances I am actually connected to my home wlan! This is not shown directly in network manager, only after opening connection information window one can see that there is a virbr0 device, and an active wlan0 device. After many reboots and sleep/wakeup cycles with both kernels (ubuntu and mainline), I can state that there is about a 50% likelyhood that wlan becomes active, and that if wlan is active after one sleep/wakeup cycle, chances are high that it will work in consecutive sleep/wakeup cycles. In two cases (one for each kernel) I could create a special case: wlan active after reboot, active again after sleep/wakeup, then inactive after next sleep/wakeup. Since these cases yield a very compact dmesg file, I post both of them here. I hope this helps pinning down the issue, please let me know if you need further data or tests. Cheers, Rudi ** Attachment added: "dmesg file created with regular ubuntu kernel: reboot, sleep/wakeup + working wlan, sleep/wakeup + broken wlan" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1584533/+attachment/4669692/+files/dmesg-flaky-ubuntu -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1584533 Title: Lenovo X220 unable to wlan after resume from sleep To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1584533/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 918377] Re: UpgradeStatus: in bug-reports wrong
I can confirm, that this bug is still present in Ubuntu 15.10: Upon system start, a crash of 'mediascanner-service-2.0' was reported, and the crash dialog claimed that mediascanner package was never upgraded since Ubuntu 11.04, which was the Ubuntu version originally installed when I got my laptop. Obviously I did all the upgrades all the way up to 15.10 in the meantime, and synaptic confirmed that the 15.10 version of mediascanner-2.0 is installed. The file /usr/bin/mediascanner- service-2.0 is shown in the contents of mediascanner-2.0 package, and the actual file shows a change date of September 2015, so it obviously didn't come with Ubuntu 11.04. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/918377 Title: UpgradeStatus: in bug-reports wrong To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/+bug/918377/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1442840] Re: Erase disk fails with error " wipefs: error: /dev/sdb1: probing initialization failed: No such file or directory"
I think I read somewhere, that manually invoking the failed command allows the user to proceed. In the case of the original problem report this would be the following command: wipefs -a /dev/sdb1 Make sure you pass the correct partition to this command, or you will lose data on whatever device you wiped instead!!! The correct device is the first partition on whatever device is supposed to become a bootable device, usually the device reported in the error message. You need to invoke it with sudo if you aren't already root. The work around worked for me at least. Since the underlying problem appears to be a race condition, a few retries may help here it it doesn't work right away. [Bug 1404900] Re: qtcreator hangs when copying to and pasting from clipboard
Short update: my initial optimism was unfortunately unfounded, the bug exists as it has for a long time now. Helgefan's description seems to be accurate: the problem arises when one presses Ctrl and then hovers over a symbol. Ctrl+click on that symbol immediately proceeds to the declaration of this symbol, but hovering with the mouse cursor causes the symbol text to change color to blue and underlined, and the system will hang with 100% CPU load for dozens of seconds. It would be very helpful if I could learn whether Ctrl+mouse hover should trigger some action, what this action is supposed to be, and whether this trigger can be configured out of my system somehow. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1404900 Title: qtcreator hangs when copying to and pasting from clipboard To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qtcreator/+bug/1404900/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Just wanted to report that this problem is still present in the qtcreator version provided by KUbuntu 15.04, but it shows up in a less annoying way now: Copy, and many similar operations no longer produce the hang, but holding down Ctrl and hovering the mouse over some code parts still causes minute long hangs (with 100% CPU load on one core).
[Bug 1499717] [NEW] Session switching broken
Public bug reported: After I switch between sessions (switch to new user session via Kstart->leave->switch_user, but also when switching to text console via Ctrl+Alt+F1), and after I try to go back to the original session, the screen is completely garbled, i.e. the screen is filled with blinking black triangles of all shapes and sizes, sometimes there is a functional mouse cursor. Here are the things I tried in order to narrow down the issue: - In system settings (Display and Monitor ---> Compositor ---> Rendering Backend) I switched from OpenGL 3.1 to OpenGL 2.0 - I changed display drivers from nvidia-346 to nvidia-346-updates - I disabled screen lock - I disabled virtual desktops Neither of the above actions improved matters. Here are the things which I also noticed: - Restarting sddm (sudo service sddm stop) restores a functioning login screen - Typing Ctrl+Alt+F1 on the login screen, and then Alt+F7 to go back gives me a working login screen - Killing kwin_x11 kills the window decorations, but restores a working screen image. - I frequently saw kwin running at 100% system load, which I vaguely remember to be an old issue with kwin, it may be unrelated to my current woes - nothing of value shows up in dmesg The above points tell me, that this is not a graphics driver issue, but one in kwin, but obviously I may be wrong. If so, please let me know. I am more than willing to test debug versions of kwin, self compiled if necessary, or whatever it takes to track down the root issue. [Bug 1497404] [NEW] Virtual desktop pager configuration confusing
Public bug reported: When I upgraded to Kubuntu Vivid Vervet, for some reason no virtual desktops were configured. My first take was an attempt to install the virtual desktop pager into the KDE control panel. Whenever I added a desktop pager widget to the panel, I saw a brief jerk in the panel, after which it returned to its original state, i.e… without desktop pager. Since I tried to trace debug logs and other, I did this several time. Once I found the correct way to configure virtual desktops, I configured 6 virtual desktops on my screen, and all of a sudden a whole barrage of dektop pager widgets appeared in my KDE panel. While this is no crash, I would call it highly confusing and irritating to anyone who is not fluent in KDE configuration. The behaviour described above is fully repeatable. Use the System Settings ---> Desktop Behaviour menu to configure just one virtual desktop, watch the desktop pager disappear from KDE panel. Assume (like I did) "oh, I need a desktop pager" and add a desktop pager widget to your KDE panel. Since this has no effect, do this a few times. Then go back and configure more than one virtual desktops and watch your KDE panel. Not nice. >From a pure software view, I can fully understand how this came about: if there are no virtual desktops, there it no point in wasting space for a desktop pager. At the same time the KDE panel configuration should allow to add as many panels as one wants, so no fault there. From a usability standpoint it's still awful that way, though! Here is my suggestion how to solve this: - change the virtual desktop pager widget such that it shows a tiny icon even if there are no virtual desktops. If people don't want to dedicate space to this widget, it's easy to remove from the panel anyway. - another advantage of this 'always on' pager widget would be that one could start with one desktop and use that widget to add more virtual desktops. Right now this is not possible because there is no widget for one desktop. - a more elegant version would be to add a "add virtual desktop" button into that KDE panel menu which holds the less frequently needed buttons (looks like an arrow head pointing up in my panel). Such a button would have saved me quite some time searching for the virtual desktop pager. This would also alleviate some confusion if one plays with "remove virtual desktop" until all but one are gone - and the pager disappears, rendering the user unable to go back. - if all this is deemed impossible, then please preconfigure at least two virtual desktops, such that novice users don't assume "oh, the new KDE doesn't yet support virtual desktops, bummer!". Just wanted to provide some further info in case it makes tracking down the issue easier: * The issue is still present on my desktop PC * I work on the same qtcreator projects on a Thinkpad X220 with Intel graphics and Gnome and this issue does not happen there. * The hang also happens when I hit Ctrl+S to save a file, therefore I thinks it's rather related to Ctrl-key than clipboard action. [Bug 1404900] [NEW] qtcreator hangs when copying to and pasting from clipboard
Public bug reported: Very frequently, but not every time, I get a multi second long busy hang, when I copy code snippets to or from the clip board. SO farI have observed this behavior only when I use Ctrl+C, Ctrl-X and Ctrl-V, but not when I used the right click menu to perform the exact same action. The hang leaves one CPU running at 100%, during that time qtcreator is completely unresponsive, it does, nevertheless, remember actions (both keyboard and mouse) done during that hang period and catches up when the hang is over. This bug does not happen with other applications (I also tested it with kate which is as similar as it gets). I would welcome hints how to support the debugging of this issue and can, if needed, compile and run test versions of qtcreator or required software. dmesg and ~/.xsession_erros show nothing related to this issue. I would like to retract my previous comment, I have the system working now with the driver supplied by the source forge e1000 driver project. As the problem was completely unrelated to the driver, chances are this also works with the stock driver supplied by Ubuntu. [Bug 509302] Re: hibernate hangs, when firewire disk is plugged in
I can confirm now that the problem persists with the newest release candidate kernels distributed through http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel- ppa/mainline/?C=M;O=D I tried version v2.6.34-rc2-karmic/ and saw the exact same behavior that I saw with previous kernels (I disabled my /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d hack that I posted previously for the test). My conclusion is that this problem is not fixed yet. Given that this kernel is the same as the one eventually going into lucid lynx, I suggest that the problem will also show up there. As requested, I ran apport-collect -p linux 509302, the results should have been uploaded already. ** Tags removed: apport-collected needs-upstream-testing -- hibernate hangs, when firewire disk is plugged in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/509302 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 509302] Re: hibernate hangs, when firewire disk is plugged in
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? I have found and posted a work around for this issue therefore I had no pressing need to pursue this issue for now. Since I run a RAID 0 configuration on my computer (or for whatever other reason), every crash means a _manual_ file system check :( so I tried to avoid running too many experiments (hate to lose my data). Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/. I just started a download and will try to find a way to run this beta before the final 10.04 release is due. If this can be tried by just running the distro off the CDROM, I should be able to do this quickly. If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p linux 509302 Sounds easy. Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. Am I correct that this would require a full install of Ubuntu 10.04 RC on my computer ? -- hibernate hangs, when firewire disk is plugged in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/509302 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 509302] Re: hibernate hangs, when firewire disk is plugged in
The driver sbp2 may be the culprit, yet I created a work around for my problem. In /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d I added a file which does the following when hibernate state is entered: - find all partitions on fire wire disks - terminate all processes accessing these partitions - unmount these partition The file is called 65FirewireDisks and looks like this (without the == markers, of course): = #!/bin/sh unmount_fwdisks() { DEVICELIST=`hwinfo --disk |grep -A 3 -e 'Driver Modules:.*sbp2' |grep 'Device File:' |awk '{print $3}' |sort |uniq` for DEVICE in $DEVICELIST ; do PARTITIONS=`mount |grep $DEVICE | awk '{print $1}'|sort|uniq` for FS in $PARTITIONS ; do fuser -m -k $FS umount $FS done done return 0 } mount_fwdisks() { return 0 } case $1 in hibernate|suspend) unmount_fwdisks ;; thaw|resume) mount_fwdisks ;; *) exit $NA ;; esac After creating this file and making it executable, I had to create one more file which tells the system to unload the sbp2 module before attempting to hibernate. For this I created the file named 01suspend_modules in the directory /etc/pm/config.d with the following content: SUSPEND_MODULES=sbp2 Done. My system goes into hibernate state now, the only problem is that I can not leave processes alive which actually access files on the fire wire disk while I enter hibernate. Needless to say it is not a good idea to use this fix if essential system services access the fire wire disks! I hope this work around helps some folks with the same problem. -- hibernate hangs, when firewire disk is plugged in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/509302 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I also discovered that after unmounting the disk and rmmod-ing sbp2 hibernate works fine! Public bug reported: Binary package hint: digikam In all the major display windows I get changing and mostly incorrect zoom factor indicators. As an example, as I look at the main screen of digikam right now, I have an image loaded with 4077x5000 Pixels, the image is displayed in its entirety plus the frame from digikam itself on a 1920x1080 monitor, yet the zoom indicator (that slider in the right bottom of the frame which lets me change how large the image is shown) tells me I'm at 87%. [Bug 509302] [NEW] hibernate hangs, when firewire disk is plugged in
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pm-utils I have a drobo, which is basically some smart disk array which can be attached via USB or via Firewire 800. However, when this device is plugged in through its firewire port, hibernate will hang forever and never poweres down my computer. It may be interesting to note that I can still switch between virtual consoles with Alt+F1-4 (so keyboard seems to work), but I can not even enter a user name at the consoles (characters never show up). If the device is connected through its USB port, hibernate works perfectly fine on my computer. In case this has not been autosubmitted by the ubuntu-bug application: I use a properly patched Ubuntu Karmic Koala for ia64 on an Intel Core 2 Quad system. lspci outputs: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31/P35/P31 Express DRAM Controller (rev 02) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31/P35/P31 Express PCI Express Root Port (rev 02) 00:1a.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 (rev 02) 00:1a.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #5 (rev 02) 00:1a.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #6 (rev 02) 00:1a.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #2 (rev 02) 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) PCI Express Port 1 (rev 02) 00:1c.4 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) PCI Express Port 5 (rev 02) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 02) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 02) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 02) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #1 (rev 02) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev 92) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801IR (ICH9R) LPC Interface Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 82801IR/IO/IH (ICH9R/DO/DH) 6 port SATA AHCI Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) SMBus Controller (rev 02) 01:00.0 PCI bridge: Texas Instruments XIO2000(A)/XIO2200(A) PCI Express-to-PCI Bridge (rev 03) 02:02.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments TSB82AA2 IEEE-1394b Link Layer Controller (rev 01) 03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G84 [GeForce 8600 GT] (rev a1) 04:00.0 SATA controller: JMicron Technology Corp.
