[Bug 1387129] Re: xpdf does not read config file

2017-09-03 Thread Shaggy Blues
Might be related to https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=737628
It seems xpdf was since patched, one year ago (that's what the link above
says), but the version I have on Ubuntu 16 (up to date) still has the bug.
Would it be possible to apply their patch?

Thanks for explaining that.

Anyway, the package finished building without any errors. It installed

I can confirm this bug. I am using Lucid Lynx 10.04 x64 on an Intel

I'm also having the same problem with the version in Jaunty.

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

However when my office was running Hardy, pbzip2 vesrion 1.0.2-0, we had
no issues with large files.

I've grabbed and compiled the 1.0.2-0 version on jaunty with debugging
enabled. On a large 14 GB file the 1.0.2-0 version operates correctly.

The reason that pbzip2 isn't working is related to the off_t variable.
In hardy it's correctly getting set to 8 while in hardy it's 4 after
it's compiled.

I had to read chapter 6.6 of the GNU Make handbook to figure it out, but
the problem is happening then the rules file defines CFLAGS then the
Makefile attempts to modify the variable.

[Bug 392745] Re: rtorrent crashes unexpectedly on hashing

2009-07-16 Thread Shaggy
I also tried removing data in the session directory, but that did not
work. It crashed with the same error. I eventually came up with a
solution. I discovered that my torrent was 99% done and it had hundreds
of files in it. But there were only 3 files that were incomplete. I
deleted those 3 files and then restarted it and it re-hashed and
completed downloading just fine.

[Bug 392745] [NEW] rtorrent crashes unexpectedly on hashing

2009-06-26 Thread Shaggy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rtorrent

I just ran into a really weird problem with rtorrent. I had left my
computer working on a large torrent (5.76 GB in size) for a few days and
I came back and found that it had crashed with the following error
message printed on the terminal:

Caught Bus error, dumping stack:
0 rtorrent [0x4337fb]
1 rtorrent [0x43805a]
2 /lib/libc.so.6 [0x7f463e218040]
3 /lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.8(sha1_block_data_order+0x205) [0x7f463f9b2745]
4 /lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.8(SHA1_Update+0x1ce) [0x7f463f9b379e]
5 /usr/lib/libtorrent.so.9 [0x7f463fd123b5]
6 /usr/lib/libtorrent.so.9 [0x7f463fd125c5]
7 /usr/lib/libtorrent.so.9 [0x7f463fd12ca8]
8 /usr/lib/libtorrent.so.9 [0x7f463fd12f0a]
9 /usr/lib/libtorrent.so.9(_ZN7torrent7performEv+0xad) [0x7f463fcfb07d]

I checked the hard drive space and I have over 75 gigs left on that
particular drive. So I started rtorrent again and it started hashing.
Within 20 minutes it crashed with the same error.

Some details:

Ubuntu jaunty 64-bit 9.04
4 GB RAM/ Intel QuadCore @ 2.43 GHz
rtorrent version: 0.8.2-0ubuntu1

I found some interesting errors in my dmesg, I will post that as an
attachment

[Bug 243393] Re: dmesg is flooded with warnings in kvm/mmu.c

2009-06-21 Thread Tim 'Shaggy' Bielawa
Hey Dustin, Thanks for looking at this bugl

I'm running Hardy LSR version of KVM in an educational department and I
think the number of issues we've experienced with the LSR KVM version
require SRU addressing. I appreciate you working on backporting the more
up to date version of KVM more than a bug comment can express. :-D

At the same time I do not want to see this error message being removed
from /var/log/kern.log as it was instrumental to being able to discern
which virtual host was (we tested) the source of our virtual host
silicon and steel machines becoming unresponsive.

[Bug 243393] Re: dmesg is flooded with warnings in kvm/mmu.c

2009-04-14 Thread Tim 'Shaggy' Bielawa
I know this comment doesn't help much -- but I want to add my $0.02.

We had a virtual machine host which went unresponsive on April 4th (10
days ago). All of the hosted virtual machines were behaving correctly.
Today while diagnosing the unresponsive virtual host I saw 3MB worth of
the error message the OP posted spammed in my /var/log/kern.log. That's
one symptom...

Early last March the same problem (unresponsive, no ssh, no virsh, etc)
was affecting the same virtual machine host. When we went to diagnose
the afflicted virtual machine host we discovered it's primary hard drive
(/dev/sda) had failed. Might just be a correlation.

I'm hope I'm not just adding static to the signal with these comments.

Here's some system specs: virtual machine host: Ubuntu Hardy Heron
(Customized system profile). 4 GB ram. Dual AMD Opteron 2216s.

[Bug 122281] Re: eject not available in the initrd

2009-03-20 Thread Tim 'Shaggy' Bielawa
Martin,

Thanks for your notice in this bug. I've looked for eject in these
folders:

/bin
/usr/bin
/usr/sbin
/target/bin/
/target/usr/bin
/target/usr/sbin

After the installation process happens for a period of time the actual
'eject' command gets installed into /target/usr/bin, no eject-udeb is
getting installed.

Once I picked up eject's presence I attempted to use it to eject the CD-
ROM containing the initrd. Here's what happened:

/target/usr/bin/eject: unable to find or open device for: `cdrom`

Running 'eject' with no options does not produce a working solution,
appending the command with the full path to the cdrom device however
works correctly.

That is, /target/usr/bin/eject /dev/scd0, successfully ejects the CD-
ROM.

I'm going to add that to out late-command and make sure the solution
still works. I'm optimistic and will post a follow up response to this
ticket with the results.

Adding the eject statement as described above to the late-command in the
preseed file provided the results we were looking for.

I'm unable currently to check if udeb-eject has been added to the
initrd. Can some one else confirm this?

[Bug 333820] Re: prioritize drivers in xorg.conf instead of fixing one

2009-03-05 Thread shaggy
Okay, usually users set up a proprietary driver with the graphical tool
for proprietary drivers.

This tool sets up the nvidia proprietary driver in xorg.conf. The users
instead, doesnt know about technical details like xorg.conf at all.

I noticed very often in our linux user group that there are problems with
kernel updates and no proprietary nvidia module can be loaded. The Ubuntu
distribution improved a lot in handling the proprietary drivers so this
shouldnt happen, and i dont blame Ubuntu for situations where it happens anyhow.
Users that have to build kernel or graphic driver from sources will meet the
problem all the time, that they have to deal with failsafe xorg.

So, what i'd like to see is that xorg should smoothly initialize with
the nv driver at the correct solution if proprietary driver is not
available. This would be better than running into the complicated
failsafe xorg which is not even localized, i found that users are very
frustrated with it.

[Bug 333820] [NEW] prioritize drivers in xorg.conf instead of fixing one

2009-02-24 Thread shaggy
Public bug reported:

If one chooses a proprietary driver like nvidia xorg.conf is set up to
use only this one, no matter what happens.

Is it possible to not exclusively set up nvidia as a driver, but include
it into the xorg's autodetection with high priority? Or is it possible
to choose it as the one driver, but still have a fallback to the
autodetection mode in case using nvidia fails - which would then choose
nv or vesa.

More a question than a bug.

[Bug 176705] Re: launch wine applications with links in html mail

2008-11-19 Thread shaggy
test with this in a mail:
a href=file:///usr/bin/gnome-calculatorgnome-calc/a
a href=file:///home/user/.wine_b/drive_c/some.exesome.exe/a
a href=file:///usr/share/doc/bittorrent/index.htmlhtml/a

The receiver can launch the gnome-calculator.
... can launch the exe file, which will launch with wine
... can open html file in firefox

Is it possible to attach options with the application launch?

After working with this further, and after the ubuntuforums came back up

would work fine. I guess this is a duplicate bug of the wireless card
sticking to high output setting even when far from router. This bug can

[Bug 292955] [NEW] [needs-packaging] func

2008-11-02 Thread Tim 'Shaggy' Bielawa
Public bug reported:

Homepage: https://fedorahosted.org/func/
License: GPL

Stolen Description: A lot of programs, systems, and tools need some way
to communicate. Func provides a two-way authenticated system for
generically doing these sort of things. You can build your own
applications on top of it, and easily expand func by adding in
additional modules, whether you want these to work through the func
command line or by means of some other application. If you just want to
use the func command line, that's great. If you want to build apps on
the func tools, that's great too.

Basically this is a great system administration tool.

[Bug 292490] [NEW] RTL8187B device does not connect in Ibex

2008-11-01 Thread Shaggy
Public bug reported:

I have a friend with a Toshiba Satellite A215-S7422 laptop. When he
heard that Ibex uses the 2.6.27 kernel with inherent support for his
rtl8187b wireless card he decided to agree to install Ibex. It installed
great and it sees his wireless card. We are also able to see wireless
networks in the area. However it fails to properly connect every time.
With the initial kernel included on the CD it would actually connect to
a network (WPA/Hidden SSID) however we cannot even ping the router
eventhough it says it's connected and it has grabbed a valid IP address
from the routers' DHCP server!

I have a mirror of the repositories and knew there was an immediate
update to the kernel so we installed the update and now it won't even
connect! It keeps going back to asking us for our password. I ran dmesg
and found some interesting messages complaining about no ipv6 routers in
the log which I am including.

I agree that what you proposed is a working solution. Though that
doesn't seem like the best way to implement the functionality. I don't

[Bug 203217] Re: fast-user-switch heavy cpu usage

2008-09-26 Thread Tim 'Shaggy' Bielawa
For those interested in a work around I was able to get fantastic
results with the following:

gconftool-2 --direct --config-source
xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type list --list-type
string --set /apps/panel/global/disabled_applets
['OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet']

If you've got any custom packages you deploy in your infrastructure
you'll be able to put it in a .postinst like I am

[Bug 261702] [NEW] RFE: ubuntu-vm-builder should provide option to specify MAC address of new guest

2008-08-26 Thread Tim 'Shaggy' Bielawa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-vm-builder

I feel that u-v-b should provide an option to specify the MAC address of
guest machines it builds.

Example usage:

$ sudo ubuntu-vm-builder --mac-address C0:FF:EE:BA:BE:00 --hostname
myCoolVM

and once the build process is complete 'myCoolVM' would have the MAC:
C0:FF:EE:BA:BE:00

I've implemented a solution in my work place that provides this functionality
in hardy through use of simple external scripts but I think it's an essential
enough feature to be included in mainstream Ubuntu as well.

[Bug 254839] [NEW] [needs-packaging] LucidLife

2008-08-04 Thread Tim 'Shaggy' Bielawa
Public bug reported:

LucidLife is a program for investigating and playing with Conway's
Life, a famous cellular automaton. Aimed at users of the GNOME desktop
environment, LucidLife should also be portable to other platforms.
LucidLife is based on GtkLife.

Homepage: http://www.icculus.org/~jcspray/LucidLife/
License: GPL
Notes: LucidLife is a useful program to mathematicians, and on top of that, is
a fun game to play with!
At present a package similar to LucidLife exists in the repositories, titled
xlife. However, the inclusion of LucidLife would still be beneficial if it were
included in the Ubuntu and Debian repositories. LucidLife uses GTK and provides
a greater level of usability and functionality than present in xlife.

[Bug 253306] Re: [sync request] Sync from debian testing 5.5-4 version

2008-07-30 Thread Tim 'Shaggy' Bielawa
AVRDUDE is a full featured FreeBSD Unix program for programming
Atmel's AVR CPU's. It can program the Flash and EEPROM, and where
supported by the serial programming protocol, it can program fuse and
lock bits. AVRDUDE also supplies a direct instruction mode allowing one
to issue any programming instruction to the AVR chip regardless of
whether AVRDUDE implements that specific feature of a particular chip.

AVRDUDE can be used effectively via the command line to read or write
all chip memory types (eeprom, flash, fuse bits, lock bits, signature
bytes) or via an interactive (terminal) mode. Using AVRDUDE from the
command line works well for programming the entire memory of the chip
from the contents of a file, while interactive mode is useful for
exploring memory contents, modifing individual bytes of eeprom,
programming fuse/lock bits, etc.

Sounds useful to me.

[Bug 252214] [NEW] dbus init script lacks the 'status' action

2008-07-26 Thread Tim 'Shaggy' Bielawa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dbus

dbus init script lacks the 'status' action. It would be useful to be able to
determine if the status daemon is running or not by querying:
 * /etc/init.d/dbus status

A concerted effort is being made to add status actions to many Ubuntu services'
init scripts:
 * https://wiki.ubuntu.com/InitScriptStatusActions

[Bug 252214] Re: dbus init script lacks the 'status' action

2008-07-26 Thread Tim 'Shaggy' Bielawa
Patch is uploaded now. Just needs some one in universe-main to approve
it. Built perfectly in an intrepid pbuilder.

I'm going to file a debian bug now and see if I can push it back to them
as well.

[Bug 22930] Re: Newly-sensitive button ignores clicks until cursor re-enters it

2008-07-24 Thread shaggy
I have rebuild hardy's gtk-2.0 package with the patch at:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=56070#c153

It fixes the bug, but needs more testing.

[Bug 250849] [NEW] Wrong values in burn dialog

2008-07-22 Thread shaggy
Public bug reported:

There are two problems here using the gnome burn tools.

1. The burn dialog offers wrong speeds. I allready reported that problem
~2 years ago: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal/+bug/67034 ,
the bug still exists in intrepid (up to date development version).

2. When there are two burning devices, a cd and a dvd device i can
select one in the burn dialogs device selection box. In the speed
selection box below that should be a list of speeds the device offers.
But for me, if i choose the DVD-burner, there a speeds available that
match the CD-Burner. And vice versa.

I can confirm this bug for ubuntu hardy and intrepid pre-release.
