[Bug 2072772] Re: The package is built without malcontent

2024-09-04 Thread Treviño
** Summary changed:

- The package is build without malcontent
+ The package is built without malcontent

** Description changed:

  * Impact

  The package is currently built with malcontent disabled because the
  package was in universe.

  The corresponding MIR is now approved, including for Noble (lp:
  #1892456). The package got promoted in Oracular already.

  The malcontent library is needed to provide parental control integration
  with something OEM partners need (new regulations make the feature
  mandatory to sell new devices in France starting this summer, other
  countries are following)

  * Test case

  - log as an admin user
  - install malcontent-gui (we don't plan to install it by default due to
depends issues but oem will)
  - create another non admin user (if there isn't already one existing)
  - start gnome-control-center
- - switcht to the users panel
+ - switch to the users panel
  - select the other users in the right pane

  -> a 'parental control' entry should be displayed

  * Regression potential

  The option is just display an entry to start the malcontent-gui
  interface. A problem would only impact the users panel, if the patch was
  wrong it could be impact on the layout of that page or showing that item
  when it shouldn't

  * Other information

  We will need to promote the malcontent source and libmalcontent-0-0
  binary. Since we can't promote things in release it means we will need
  to coordinate with an archive admin to copy the package in noble-updates
  and promote it there

[Bug 2077576] Re: SSH client doesn't handle properly non-ASCII chars

2024-09-04 Thread Treviño
Mh, yeah looks like the terminal filtering is something we should do in
openssh anyways, at various levels though.

Fact is that if a server is malicious, nothing prevents to do the same
through a simpler sshd banner or command, that is still able to act on
remote terminal.

It's true that PAM modules are sneakier than that, as they may be
checked less than the pure openssh server configuration, but still it's
all server duty, and if compromised (intentionally or not), it can be
still a driver for such issues in the current state.

ASCII based solutions for qr code are acceptable, they can just quite
big though. Being a problem if you use them from a tty. However that's
another possibility we were considering already.

Regarding upstream diversion, I totally agree (and I would have loved to
avoid it)... Ideally we had a plan, and the fix was proposed way earlier
upstream than downstream. So we were just waiting...

  Enable PAM and keyboard interactive authentication in a ssh server:

  Add a configuration file such as:
   /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/test-ssh-pam.conf

  Containing:

  UsePAM yes
  KbdInteractiveAuthentication yes
+ # This was working already; here to check potential regressions

+
+ It's also suggested to check for regressions using a `Banner` option in

  Restart the server:

    sudo systemctl restart ssh.service

  Edit the sshd PAM configuration file, adding as first line:

-   authrequisite pam_echo.so Hello SSHD! We love 🍕!
+   authrequisite pam_echo.so Hello SSHD \ We love 🍕!

  Can be done with the command:
-   sudo sed '1 i\authrequisite pam_echo.so Hello SSHD! We love 🍕!' -i
/etc/pam.d/sshd
+   sudo sed '1 iauthrequisite pam_echo.so Hello SSHD! \\ We love 🍕!' \
+-i /etc/pam.d/sshd

  ## Client test

  In the same host:

   ssh -o PubkeyAuthentication=no \
   -o PasswordAuthentication=no \
   -o PreferredAuthentications=keyboard-interactive \
   $USER@localhost

  The client should show:

- Hello SSHD-dev in devel schroot! Want some 🍕?
+ Hello SSHD \ We love 🍕!
  ($USER@localhost) Password:
+ ...
+ Hello from SSHD \ We also love 🍕!

  Retry the same with another host and without keyboard authentication
  enabled in the server side.

  ## Cleanup

  Revert the changes done in the cleanup phase, after test is done

  sudo sed '/pam_echo\.so/d' -i /etc/pam.d/sshd
  sudo rm /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/test-ssh-pam.conf

  [ Regression potential ]

[Bug 2077576] Re: SSH client doesn't handle properly non-ASCII chars

2024-09-04 Thread Treviño
> This seems like quite an invasive change. It has not yet been accepted
upstream.

Nope, but reviewed and approved by at least one upstream developer both
upstream and downstream (Tobias), while we're using it in noble for few
months already with no issue reported so far.

> It touches PAM, and it looks to me like it might affect behaviour
before authentication is complete. It affects escaping. Injection of
malicious data into a stream to be parsed by the terminal has security
implications. There is no security analysis or opinion of the security
team presented.

It doesn't touch PAM authentication by default, it's triggered by (some)
PAM authentications.

However, we can definitely get the security team in the loop here.

> What are we looking at here? Just the ability to include emoji in
messages that, according to the SRU documentation provided, won't even
be seen by the user?

I can clarify this in the description, but showing emoji that's clearly
not the root cause, it's just the simplest and easier reproducer for
this issue.

Indeed, the reason for this is that in authd we are presenting a qrcode
to perform weblogin and that doesn't work.

We are basically affected by the same issue of
https://github.com/ubuntu/authd/issues/497

The test case for it, in a such complex setup isn't as easy to test as
the minimal reproducer that it's enough to cover the fix and to ensure
there are no regressions in the normal behavior.

We're going to handle that in the openssh server too (starting from
noble), but still we should be able to support this capability in the
right way in ubuntu.

> That sounds like a feature to me, and therefore doesn't seem appropriate to
> change a stable release for given that no justification has been provided.

Well, all the bug fixes can be features, if you are strict enough. But
this is not the case IMHO, the client is clearly broken at handling some
particular text, we're fixing it.

There are no changes in behavior, and other major SSH clients (putty)
handle this case already as the proposed change does for years.

>> > SSH info messages are not shown by the client.
> This seems to be contradicted by the provided Test Plan, which runs the
> client and checks for the message. Please explain.

PAM info messsages are exposed as generic SSH messages, they're the only
ones of this kind AFAIK, but I wanted to be generic enough so that
normal ssh usage should be checked too.

>> These kind of messages are normally shown only when PAM is enabled in the
>> server side, so it should not affect the normal behavior.
> PAM is enabled by default on openssh on Ubuntu, no?

PAM it is, but keyboard interactive authentication (which is the only
case that triggers these messages) is not, so the change doesn't affect
PAM behavior of ssh per se, only if the server has enabled keyboard
interactive authentication, which PAM modules can trigger.

But again, this is not default.

We do use `vpx` in fact it gets loaded if you use `GST_DEBUG=5` (see
https://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/documentation/tutorials/basic/debugging-
tools.html?gi-language=c), but one is loaded on top of other I think, so
the problem.

In the past without codecalpha being loaded we were getting just dark
backgrounds, but now we've another class of issues it seems.

[Bug 2071463] Re: Duplicate unread message notifications between dash and dock

2024-08-27 Thread Treviño
Sadly the issue is of the applications: They are in charge of removing
the notifications they added if these are invalid.

We can't do anything about, the only thing you can do at system level is
disabling the counting of the pending notifications per app.

[Bug 2071463] Re: Duplicate unread message notifications between dash and dock

2024-08-27 Thread Treviño
That's an expected feature, since you have unread notifications, they
will show up in the settings.

You can change this though, just run:
 $ gnome-extensions prefs ubuntu-d...@ubuntu.com

Then from the dialog you can tune this behavior from the Application
Icons tab, where you can define whether to sum the values or to hide the
notifications at all.

Note this can be controlled from the shell too, by enabling the do-not-
disturb mode.

[Bug 2077576] Re: SSH client doesn't handle properly non-ASCII chars

2024-08-21 Thread Treviño
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

  Non-ascii visible chars are not properly rendered by clients, showing
  their octal visualization.

  Such as:

  Hello SSHD! We love \360\237\215\225!

  [ Test case ]

  ## Server preparation

  Enable PAM and keyboard interactive authentication in a ssh server:

  Add a configuration file such as:
-  /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/test-ssh-pam.conf
+  /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/test-ssh-pam.conf

  Containing:

  UsePAM yes
  KbdInteractiveAuthentication yes

-
  Restart the server:

-   sudo systemctl restart ssh.service
+   sudo systemctl restart ssh.service

  Edit the sshd PAM configuration file, adding as first line:

- authrequisite pam_echo.so Hello SSHD! We love 🍕!
+   authrequisite pam_echo.so Hello SSHD! We love 🍕!

  Can be done with the command:
-   sudo sed '1 i\authrequisite pam_echo.so Hello SSHD! We love 🍕!' -i
/etc/pam.d/sshd
-
+   sudo sed '1 i\authrequisite pam_echo.so Hello SSHD! We love 🍕!' -i
/etc/pam.d/sshd

  ## Client test

  In the same host:

-  ssh -o PubkeyAuthentication=no \
-  -o PasswordAuthentication=no \
-  -o PreferredAuthentications=keyboard-interactive \
-  $USER@localhost
+  ssh -o PubkeyAuthentication=no \
+  -o PasswordAuthentication=no \
+  -o PreferredAuthentications=keyboard-interactive \
+  $USER@localhost

  The client should show:

  Hello SSHD-dev in devel schroot! Want some 🍕?
  ($USER@localhost) Password:

+ Retry the same with another host and without keyboard authentication
+ enabled in the server side.

[Bug 2077576] [NEW] SSH client doesn't handle properly non-ASCII chars

2024-08-21 Thread Treviño
Public bug reported:

[ Impact ]

Non-ascii visible chars are not properly rendered by clients, showing
their octal visualization.

Such as:

Hello SSHD! We love \360\237\215\225!

[ Test case ]

## Server preparation

Enable PAM and keyboard interactive authentication in a ssh server:

Add a configuration file such as:
 /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/test-ssh-pam.conf

Containing:

UsePAM yes
KbdInteractiveAuthentication yes

Restart the server:

  sudo systemctl restart ssh.service

Edit the sshd PAM configuration file, adding as first line:

  authrequisite pam_echo.so Hello SSHD! We love 🍕!

Can be done with the command:
  sudo sed '1 i\authrequisite pam_echo.so Hello SSHD! We love 🍕!' -i
/etc/pam.d/sshd

## Client test

In the same host:

 ssh -o PubkeyAuthentication=no \
 -o PasswordAuthentication=no \
 -o PreferredAuthentications=keyboard-interactive \
 $USER@localhost

The client should show:

Hello SSHD-dev in devel schroot! Want some 🍕?
($USER@localhost) Password:

## Cleanup

Revert the changes done in the cleanup phase, after test is done

sudo sed '/pam_echo\.so/d' -i /etc/pam.d/sshd
sudo rm /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/test-ssh-pam.conf

[ Regression potential ]

SSH info messages are not shown by the client

[Bug 2076189] Re: Ubuntu Pro page design is not consistent with the rest of the application

2024-08-12 Thread Treviño
** Description changed:

+ [ Impact ]
+
  The Ubuntu Pro page uses a design that isn't consistent with the
  libadwaita design of the app.

  The text is not centered or using cards as expected, making it less
  appealing or looking as "professional" as ubuntu pro should.

  See also LP: #2062971
+
+
+ [ Test case ]
+
+ Ensure that ubuntu pro is detached, if not, use `pro detach` command.
+
+ Run:
+  rm ~/.config/gnome-initial-setup-done
+  /usr/libexec/gnome-initial-setup --existing-user
+
+ 1. Ubuntu Pro page should show after initial pages
+ - Pro should be suggested
+ - Navigating to next page or skipping the request should both work
+- Note that using Alt+$KEY accelerators should work too
+
+ 2. Attach page:
+ - Attaching a machine with a known token should work
+ - Attaching a machine with an external browser request should work
+ - Trying to attach with a wrong token should result in an error
+ - Going back to the offer page and back to the attach one should work,
+generating a new magic token if required (time has expired).
+
+ 3. Summary page:
+ - It should be shown only on success of the previous stage.
+ - An HiDPI scalable green check-mark should be shown to confirm the success.
+ - It should contain a bullet list of the activated services and a bullet list
+of the available ones.
+
+
+ 4. Generic:
+ - In all the pages, the ubuntu pro logo should be centered, as well as the
page
+title.
+ - The page actions or highlights should be inside libadwaita-styled cards.
+
+
+ Running:
+
+  env GTK_DEBUG=invert-text-dir /usr/libexec/gnome-initial-setup
+ --existing-user
+
+ Should show all the list elements using the inverted (RTL) text direction,
including:
+  - Pro benefits
+ - Pro enabled and disabled features
+ - Actions and their descriptions
+
+
+ [ Regression potential ]
+
+ All the pro features in gnome-initial-setup may fail, so:
+  - Attaching a machine from token
+ - Attaching a machine from magic token (logging in from URI)
+ - Using a wrong token (should be refused)
+ - Going back and forth the pages
+ - The summary page should contain all the expected elements
+
+ Note that this change implies some strings changes (not their contents,
+ but the way they're arranged), but this is not a problem for
+ translations because due to bug #2068639 we had no translations enabled
+ anyways.
+
+ Also note that this follows the indications of the design team:

[Bug 2076662] [NEW] 46.3 stable update

2024-08-12 Thread Treviño
Public bug reported:

* Impact

The update is a stable GNOME update including bugfixes and translations
updates

https://mirror.accum.se/pub/GNOME/sources/gnome-initial-setup/46/gnome-
initial-setup-46.3.news

Bugs fixed:

- gnome-initial-setup-copy-worker, which runs after Initial Setup has created
  the first user on the system, is now ordered before GNOME Keyring, assuming
  both Initial Setup and GNOME Keyring have been configured with systemd
  support. This avoids a race between gnome-initial-setup-copy-worker copying
  the login keyring that was created during Initial Setup, and GNOME Keyring
  creating a login keyring if none exists on disk.

- Keyboard navigation now works better on the Wi-Fi page.

Other improvements:

- The CONTRIBUTING file has been updated with more development tips.

Translation updates:

https://mirror.accum.se/pub/GNOME/sources/gnome-initial-setup/46/gnome-
initial-setup-46.3.news

Translation updates

* Test Case

As part of the GNOME MRE the update will be tested by applying the
standard testplan

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/TestPlans/GnomeInitialSetup

* Regression potential

We should focus on testing the features impacted by the fixes, which is
in this case is Ubuntu pro pages and that those are now translatable.

[Bug 2076189] [NEW] Ubuntu Pro page design is not consistent with the rest of the application

2024-08-06 Thread Treviño

The Ubuntu Pro page uses a design that isn't consistent with the
libadwaita design of the app.

The text is not centered or using cards as expected, making it less
appealing or looking as "professional" as ubuntu pro should.

[Bug 2075549] [NEW] Running gtk applications in compositor supporting only shared memory buffers does not work with zink

2024-08-01 Thread Treviño
Public bug reported:

[ Impact ]

An application is not draw if using GL and running in a wayland
compositor that doesn't support dmabuf (e.g. just shared memory).

This is happening with amd graphics, but I've read of reports with
intel.

See: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/11613
Fixed by: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/merge_requests/30479

[ Test case ]

 1. Install weston compositor
 2. Install mesa-utils and gtk-4-examples
 3. In a terminal run:

  weston --renderer=pixman

 4. In the weston terminal run:
 gtk4-demo
 4a. The application should start and show

 5. In the weston terminal run:
 eglgears_wayland
 5a. The application should start and the gears spinning

[ Regression potential ]

swrast driver is used to render when proper hardware acceleration can be
used instead.

[Bug 2072703] Re: Update to GNOME Shell release 46.3.1

2024-07-24 Thread Treviño
As Daniel said, it's not fully clear to me why this applied to GNOME
shell too since it wasn't the one introducing new features, but .1 was a
pure bug-fix release and so next ones.

However, even if that didn't apply (in fact I didn't mention it in the
bug), all the new micro-release rules seems to apply.

Also it states
 > it is also acceptable to upload new microreleases with many bug fixes without
 > individual Launchpad bugs for each of them

And given that the majority of the main bugs fixed by the new versions
were not referenced by no ubuntu bug so far, it looked to me just better
to use this bug as the unique point of contact where potential
regressions could be reported.

[Bug 2072718] [NEW] Switching authentication mode with authd may leave old messages or fields around

2024-07-10 Thread Treviño
Public bug reported:

[ Impact ]

When switching from an auth mode to another, unneeded entries could be
left around or old information messages.

[ Test case ]

1. Install and configure authd and a broker
   https://github.com/ubuntu/authd/wiki
2. From the bottom-right authentication-modes selector icon choose a method
3. Switching to an entry-less method (such as fido or phone auth) the entries
should be hidden
4. After an error/info message has been shown, switching authentication method
should hide such message

[ Regression potential ]

Info messages are hidden when they should not.

Note that authd is not yet available in noble, thus wrong behaviors when
logging in with it can't be considered really "regressions".

[Bug 2072716] [NEW] Key navigation in auth propmt choice list does not fully work

2024-07-10 Thread Treviño
Public bug reported:

[ Impact ]

When auth prompt choice list widget is shown (such as in authd
authentication or in gdm-smartcard authentication, when multiple
certificates are present in a card), it's not possible to navigate
through its items until the user has focused one via the mouse.

[ Test case ]

We're testing the authd case since it's easier to trigger

1. Install and configure authd and a broker
   https://github.com/ubuntu/authd/wiki
2. When the broker or the authentication mode to use are requested, the choice
list widget is visible
3. Moving around with the arrows or hitting Enter or Escape should lead to the
expected action

[ Regression potential ]

Keyboard navigation in other widgets of the authentication prompt
(lockscreen or login view) is broken.

[Bug 2072714] [NEW] Qrcode authentication dialog should show the login code as separate item

2024-07-10 Thread Treviño
Public bug reported:

[ Impact ]

When logging in with gnome-shell using an authd-based broker that
supports qrcode (web) based authentication, the login code should be
shown clearly and not as the text label only

[ Test case ]

1. Install and configure authd and a broker
   https://github.com/ubuntu/authd/wiki
2. Start web-based authentication with a broker
3. The login code should be shown as a clear separate label

[ Regression potential ]

No login code is shown at all (neither in the main label or as a
standalone label)

Note that authd is not yet available in noble, thus wrong behaviors when
logging in with it can't be considered really "regressions".

[Bug 2072710] [NEW] Qrcode-based authentication requires manual ack

2024-07-10 Thread Treviño
Public bug reported:

[ Impact ]

When logging in with gnome-shell using an authd-based broker that
supports qrcode (web) based authentication, the user needs to press
"Done" once the qrcode has been scanned and the login code sent via the
related web page

[ Test case ]

1. Install and configure authd and a broker
   https://github.com/ubuntu/authd/wiki
2. Start web-based authentication with a broker
3. Scan the qrcode and input the login code
4. Once the login code has been sent the dialog should be hidden automatically
and the login to continue

[ Regression potential ]

Qrcode dialog may be hidden even if not required or flash (hide and show
quickly).

Note that authd is not yet available in noble, thus wrong behaviors when
logging in with it can't be considered really "regressions".

to generate a new login code.

[ Test case ]

1. Install and configure authd and a broker

[Bug 2067610] Re: GNOME Shell qrcode generator may create invalid QR code images

2024-07-10 Thread Treviño
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

  When creating QR Code images for long(er) URIs we may end up creating qr
  codes whose size isn't matching the expected one and this may lead to a
  wrongly generated texture (and potential memory access errors).

  An example: https://i.imgur.com/x3P4dzQ.png

  [ Test case ]

  In order to test this from GNOME shell, many components have to be set
  up that are harder to check so this can be easily simulated using a
  simple test program that replicates what the shell does to generate the
  image: https://www.pastery.net/uyzeca/

+ 0. Install mutter compositor (prerequisite, remove it afterwards):
+$ sudo apt install mutter
  1. Download and run the test script:
-$ wget -O /tmp/shell-qrcode-tester.py https://www.pastery.net/uyzeca/raw
+    $ wget -O /tmp/shell-qrcode-tester.py https://www.pastery.net/uyzeca/raw
  2. Run it with:
-$ python3 /tmp/shell-qrcode-tester.py
+    $ python3 /tmp/shell-qrcode-tester.py
  3. The qrcode should open in a new window and display correctly as
-https://imgur.com/dddTL6u.png (pointing to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell)
+    https://imgur.com/dddTL6u.png (pointing to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell)

  [ Regression potential ]

  QrCodes are used only during web authentication that is not something
  that is generally exposed to users, but this may potentially lead to
  wrong or missing qr codes textures.

[Bug 2068080] Re: Updating password from authd does not work

2024-07-10 Thread Treviño
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

  If an authd broker requires updating the password on login, GNOME shell
  doesn't handle the request properly, even though it exposes such feature
  as supported to brokers.

  [ Test case ]

  - Install authd (https://github.com/ubuntu/authd) with the example broker

[Bug 2072703] [NEW] Update to GNOME Shell release 46.3.1

2024-07-10 Thread Treviño
Public bug reported:

[ Impact ]

Release GNOME Shell 46.3.1 to Oracular and eventually SRU to Noble.

It's a new bugfix release in the stable 46 series.

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/blob/46.3.1/NEWS

[ Test Plan ]

Complete all the non-optional test cases at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/TestPlans/GNOMEShell

[ Where problems could occur ]

GNOME Shell is the heart of the Ubuntu desktop experience.

A severe enough bug could mean that people are unable to use their
desktop version of Ubuntu.

Smaller bugs could interrupt people's workflows.

GNOME Shell is included in the GNOME micro release exception

[Bug 2016013] Re: New windows (like gnome-initial-setup) don't get centered if Desktop Icons NG is loaded

2024-06-24 Thread Treviño
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

  New windows don't get centered if Desktop Icons NG is loaded.

  With vanilla GNOME, if an app window is too large for tiling (larger
  than a quarter of the screen) then it will be centered by default. But
  this doesn't happen when DING is loaded, probably because DING is
  incorrectly treated as an app window.

  The scope of this bug has now been reduced to only cover gnome-initial-
  setup.

  [ Test Plan ]

  1. Log into a Wayland session.
  2. Run: sudo apt install gnome-initial-setup
- 3. Run: /usr/libexec/gnome-initial-setup
+ 3. Run: /usr/libexec/gnome-initial-setup --existing-user
  4. Verify: The window is centered.

  [ Where problems could occur ]

  Anywhere in window placement when a new window opens.

  [ Other Info ]

[Bug 2051574] Re: gnome-shell-portal-helper crashed with SIGTRAP in waitUntilSyncedOrDie() from WebKit::XDGDBusProxy::launch() ["Failed to fully launch dbus-proxy: Child process exited with code 1"]

2024-06-18 Thread Treviño
I've asked to Michael Catanzaro that maintains webkit gtk and here's his
analysis:

```
Jan 29 08:56:29 hostname org.gnome.Shell.PortalHelper[2906]: bwrap: Creating
new namespace failed: Permission denied
Jan 29 08:56:29 hostname gnome-shell-por[2712]: Failed to fully launch
dbus-proxy: Child process exited with code 1
```

xdg-dbus-proxy gets run under bubblewrap because we need to put the
.flatpak-info file into the filesystem namespace of the xdg-dbus-proxy

It looks like bubblewrap doesn't have permission to create a new user
namespace. That's probably an apparmor problem?

Maybe it only happens in a non-default apparmor configuration?

Maybe a problem with https://ubuntu.com/blog/ubuntu-23-10-restricted-
unprivileged-user-namespaces ?

[Bug 2068912] Re: Authd based authentication fields cannot be translated

[Bug 2068080] Re: Updating password from authd does not work

2024-06-13 Thread Treviño
** Description changed:

+ [ Impact ]
+
  If an authd broker requires updating the password on login, GNOME shell
  doesn't handle the request properly, even though it exposes such feature
  as supported to brokers.
+
+ [ Test case ]
+
+ - Install authd (https://github.com/ubuntu/authd) with the example broker
+ - Start authd authentication
+ - Login with the user-needs-reset user
+ - You are requested to change password and you are required to change
+   the password
+ - Once the password is changed, login can proceed
+
+ [ Regression potential ]
+
+ Authd authentication doesn't work anymore, user is requested to change
+ the password even if not required.

[Bug 2019776] Re: If gnome-shell is started directly (instead of through gnome-session), it might deadlock with no output to the screen

2024-06-13 Thread Treviño
** Description changed:

+ [ Impact ]
+
  If gnome-shell is launched directly instead of launched through gnome-
  session, the process spawning `ibus-daemon` might cause deadlock and
  unable to start the graphics.

  Since `ibusManager.js` checks whether service
  `org.freedesktop.IBus.session.GNOME.service` exists. In our case with
  Ubuntu ubiquity, we've turned off `gnome-session.service` so that the
  check failed and gnome-shell spawns `ibus-daemon` after the check.
+
+ [ Test case ]
+
+  - In a terminal launch
+  - env XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/tmp/nested-runtime \
+dbus-run-session gnome-shell --nested --wayland
+ - The shell should start without hanging
+ - Repeat this multiple times and ensure it works reliably
+
+ [ Regression potential ]
+
+ - Shell (and or its extensions) may not be able to spawn child processes
+ - Applications launched by the shell may inherit the rlimits of mutter
+
+ ---

  I tried using gdb to gnome-shell and discovered it's hanging in a child
  process spawning `ibus-daemon`, but is still in child_setup of
  `Glib.spawn_async` function:

  ```
  root@dell-desktop:/home/oem# cat /tmp/log
  == Stack trace for context 0x5584da793180 ==
  #0   5584dbd2d478 i   resource:///org/gnome/shell/misc/ibusManager.js:119
(2776aa47bfb0 @ 12)
  #1   5584dbd2d3a8 i   resource:///org/gnome/shell/misc/ibusManager.js:114
(2776aa47bf60 @ 426)
  #2   5584dbd2d308 i   resource:///org/gnome/shell/misc/ibusManager.js:90
(2776aa47bec0 @ 162)
  #3   5584dbd2d268 i   self-hosted:689 (34e3dc212650 @ 15)
  ```

  which is, in ibusManager.js:

  ```
- const [success_, pid] = GLib.spawn_async(
- null, cmdLine, env,
- GLib.SpawnFlags.SEARCH_PATH |
GLib.SpawnFlags.DO_NOT_REAP_CHILD,
- () => {
- try {
- global.context.restore_rlimit_nofile(); # <- here
- } catch (err) {
- }
- }
- );
+ const [success_, pid] = GLib.spawn_async(
+ null, cmdLine, env,
+ GLib.SpawnFlags.SEARCH_PATH |
GLib.SpawnFlags.DO_NOT_REAP_CHILD,
+ () => {
+ try {
+ global.context.restore_rlimit_nofile(); # <- here
+ } catch (err) {
+ }
+ }
+ );
  ```

  Further code tracing found out that the deadlock is not during the
  execution of the function (`restore_rlimit_nofile`) but the access to
  the GObject (probably `global.context`).

  Currently my propose to work around this issue is to add a 5 second
  `setTimeout` to the caller of `_spawn` function in `ibusManager.js`.

  I've lost debugging information but I can try reproducing the issue and
  give the backtrace from gdb if needed.

[Bug 2069381] [NEW] GNOME Shell doesn't try to start ibus-daemon on startup

2024-06-13 Thread Treviño

Ibus daemon is not launched when launching the shell nested

[ Test case ]

[Bug 2012388] Re: X11 window (usually AnyDesk) at top-right of the screen is invisible and steals mouse clicks

2024-06-13 Thread Treviño
** Description changed:

+ [ Impact ]
+
+ In X11, some tray icons are covering areas they don't own, preventing
+ events to reach to the windows under the cursor
+
+ [ Test case ]
+
+ - Launch Ubuntu in Xorg session
+ - Download anydesk client for Ubuntu from
+   https://anydesk.com/it/downloads/linux
+ WARNING: Installing software from any untrusted deb (such as the
+ closed sources ones) is at your own risk!
+ - Optionally install hexchat from ubuntu repository
+ It triggers the same bug but is harder to reproduce
+ - Launch the test applications
+ - Clicking in the icons should make the application actions to be

+
+ [ Regression potential ]
+
+ - Tray icons are not shown
+ - Tray icons size is not matching the expected ones
+
+ There's a behavior change that is actually a bug fix (it wasn't ever
