No I didnt try maverick, nor is there any point, simply because the xbmc is barely now supporting lucid, I dont think dismissing lucid altogether, without fixing it there is a solution, not that t matters, since I doubt a fix will ever appear. This problem will exist for a long long time the proof of this as they say is in the pudding, priority low... (jokes) other ancient bugs still exist since forever up until even Lucid. 1st ALL ION platforms will and do exibit this error regardless of distro. 2nd Thers a lack of Linux drivers for a monitoring chipset which would very likely solve this. 3rd laxing kernel fixes this but borks all sorts. -- [ubuntu-boot-experience] nForce2_smbus conflicts with ACPI region SM00 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/440470 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 440470] Re: [ubuntu-boot-experience] nForce2_smbus conflicts with ACPI region SM00
I have experienced same issue with all karmic kernels acpi laxing is not a real fix even if it suppresses the error, in some way the must be some IO probing being done by acpi and sensors banging IO ports which I understand can be harmful for hw. The asrock ION family has a hw monitoring/control chip with no drivers available in the wild from either Asrock or Linux communities. Asrock first line support say W83677HG-I (the chip in question) has linux drivers yet nowhere are they to be found. I believe that this chip is also part of solving this issue properly lm- sensors project have a request for such driver but nothing so far is up. Also noticed issues with kernels up to -18 karmic flavours have issues with supporting modules like coretemp for instance where the coretemp.ko must be compiled in order to work. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/485234 This is all related IMO. -- [ubuntu-boot-experience] nForce2_smbus conflicts with ACPI region SM00 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/440470 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

its worth mentioning that Im using a minimal install on a Asrock ION 330 HT and theres many issues with that system and karmic minimal install. as I install Karmic minimal Im greeted straight away with conflict with ic2 smbus conflicts before I get terminal prompt to log in. Maybe this is platform specific which would make things worst but facts are what I have reported is real. pls find attached the file requested neither files work. on a side note I have also found way too many bugs associated with minimal installs so many that I don't have time to document and report them all. ** Attachment added: both coretemp files which promote same error http://launchpadlibrarian.net/36831191/coretemp.rar -- linux-image https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/485234 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 485234] Re: linux-image
well honestly like I said karmic was such a nightmare that it is practically impossible to run on this machine I mentioned the coretemp.ko since I cannot run karmic and its too much of a headache to even try fixing it. as for the size discrepancy, one is plain vanilla as it comes with install which doesnt support my hardware the other is a specific version which supports more hardware in this case my machine. The -orig is the original file of course 19kb and the other is 95kb. No idea why the files would report different strings or why they do. they both should load just fine on the karmic kernel when I compiled the 2.6.32 from kernel from scratch these files as they are both load no issues (all systems go) as for the 2.6.31 kernel like I said no way in hell will it load neither file nor will it resolve other issues with the system like the ic2-smbus conflicts... Really unless I create a custom minimal install disk with the 2.6.32 kernel and install that I see no other solution until this kernel is official and a proper minimal install can be used installing the .32 kernel instead of the offending ones which are now whats on offer labelled stable. -- linux-image https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/485234 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Well if I said Karmic then it was karmic, like I said the documentation does point to that. On another note could you be a gentleman and ping someone to get some ball rolling on other bug report since it will either be addressed properly with the introduction of a decently working kernel on the 2.6.32 family. Im not using Karmic as a minimal install anymore for various reason mainly the kernel bugs. which reminds me when I have the time to report other bugs with the minimal .isos Karmic seems to me to have been rammed out the door. -- apport ValueError('need more than 1 value to unpack',) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/485238 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 485238] Re: apport ValueError('need more than 1 value to unpack', )
###Also, the error you got shows that it was actually reading the .apport file and stumbled over an invalidly formatted line. If there ###were problems with recognizing the command line arguments, it would have looked completely different. Well in this case some bug does exist in the minimal install flavour which it is quite beyond me since you dont see the same, however that may be the erro was as described and whaever caused it did it to more than one file. Pehaps the Karmic documentation on this should be revised and the root of why this has happened on a minimal install spits out that error when like you say it should have outputed that -c is invalid to start with. regards. -- apport ValueError('need more than 1 value to unpack',) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/485238 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 485234] Re: linux-image
Well I have supplied the apport file and all the information I found pertinent. I realise that whoever is dealing with this cant jump at any 1 report, I get it ppl have all sorts of things in live to do. My comment regarding the no one cares part, really came from the OLDER bug I linked to on my post where it was reported fixed and indeed its not if you check down that original bug report to a way older Ubuntu Distro. I understand also that have two instances probing the same bus can break things potentially damage hardware and that from 2.6.29 has sorta changed in regards to that so this does not happen. However it does not explain why a older kernel fixes it like the 2.6.32rc7. Nor does it explain why froa very long time this was reported on the other report and no official reply was given. I apologise if it sounded ungrateful at sme stage, I hope this gets looked at and the necessary patches applied so that everything works as expected. This has forced me to stop doinbg Karmic based custom minimal installs for the issues posted even before adding any sensors monitoring sw it already presents conflicts with SMbus access. I can only blame it on testers not reporting it properly though in this instace its a silent on boot comment which is apparently not logged. Heres hoping I can get Karmic posted on my plentifull requests for custom systems atm Im no longer running Karmic besides on VM. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed -- linux-image https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/485234 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Actually no the switch is ubuntu-bug -c /tmp/linux-image.apport if the -c is redundant then the documentation is wrong. ** Description changed: - This HAPPENS WITH ANY KARMIC KERNEL EVEN 2.6.31.1 + This HAPPENS WITH ANY KARMIC KERNEL EVEN 2.6.31.14 ProblemType: Bug Well this is really silly from a stable supposedly release that has been tested for months. AND has been reported FIXED on Bug #296478 I'm here to tell you its not fixed, does not work, period. uname -r is 2.6.31-15-generic KARMIC KOALA 9.10 I have tried this with default files as system is installed with minimal karmic install I get error FATAL: Error inserting coretemp (/lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/drivers/hwmon/coretemp.ko): Invalid module format and I have tried it with the description below. FATAL ERRORS EXIST. dmesg outputs this [ 4563.803572] coretemp: no symbol version for module_layout WTH?? I have this issue and further more on jaunty kernel 2.6.28-16 modprobe coretemp worked perfectly after I replaced sensors-detect in /usr/sbin/ with this file http://www.lm-sensors.org/svn/lm-sensors/trunk/prog/detect/sensors-detect chmod 755 this file and added a pre-patched coretemp.ko from http://mabene.icomedias.com/coretemp.ko and place it in its path which varies on kernel name but is in my instance /lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/drivers/hwmon/ obviously I renamed the existing files by doing e.g. filename.extension-orig. JUST FOR TESTING PURPOSES. This is my sensors-detect output The modules load during that so it has to work but in no obvious way. http://pastebin.com/f2ae9c41b LM-SENSORS is Version: 1:3.1.1-4~ppa0 sensors -s outputs No sensors found! Make sure you loaded all the kernel drivers you need. This worked fine in Jaunty kernels with no issues in EITHER CASE and all my CPU temps were posted when doing # sensors Doing sensors-detect is able to see/load modules which are coretemp, ic2-nforce2, ic2-dev I cannot load any of them using modprobe ic2-nforce2, ic2-dev it says FATAL: Module ic2_dev not found. makes anyone wonder if bug reports are addressed or even read in some cases. silly bugs are allowed to travel down for years without being fixed in some cases. ok I get it its all free and ppl do it in their spare time they have families/jobs/live like most of us do well I do anywho... just dont get it why this is reported and not fixed. or when ppl just add it as a duplicate of e.g. Bug #296478 and so sometimes even having dozens of 'duplicate' bugs that when u read have nothing in relation in the majority of cases. [Bug 260001] Re: ubiquity crashed with InstallStepError in configure_bootloader()
Here is how I resolved this issue. I am runnig a triple boot environment on one HDD I have XP PRO/Vista Ultimate SP1 with a modivied BCD (vista boot loader alomost like grub really) Vista want to take control and Ubuntu wants to take control... its a battle. Ubuntu resides on the secondary slave drive with it s own swap space. Previously with no issues I altered the Vista BCD to include XP/Vista/Ubuntu hardy and when I slected hardy i was passed to the grub loader. all was fine. enter IBEX Upgrading in my case failed miserably CD had no errors and all was fine, fresh install failked as well with this error so determined I decided to win I had to let UBUNTU grub do the job I also had a sata drive which I unplugged for some reason IDE/sata mix during install for me is a no no. I proceeded to formats the slave HDD completley and then install with a completly pre formated HDD, result no errors, Except now I have to boot Linux by default and loog at that ugly grub menu (regardless of what you do its still ugly and clumbsy) now I boot all 3 but made the slave drive be the first bootable device in bios, had I not done that, selecting UBUNTU form the vista bcd load the grub for dos with anerro and shows a grub Never got that why... I got mine working at last though disapointed since openoffice is stil 2.4 not 3.0 and TBH besides a few fixes I rather have staid with 8.4.0.1LTS and you really dont have that much else going for it nothing looks inovative Sorry for the offtopic bit. -- ubiquity crashed with InstallStepError in configure_bootloader() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/260001 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 260001] Re: ubiquity crashed with InstallStepError in configure_bootloader()
Yes I found exact same issue further more upgrade from LTS also failed with dozens of errors. So when I finally decided to do a clean install Grub failed to install and resulting in the reported error. Also worth mentioning that installing from live session will never go past the loading partition utility and result in more errors. 8.10 is definitely worst now then it was when on Beta 2... In fact I would have thought this was at all not ready for release. On a personal observation I could never while using beta 2 to a triple boot like I did with Hardy, I dont know what the devs did though theire hard work I feel sorry to report it needs more polishing. -- ubiquity crashed with InstallStepError in configure_bootloader() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/260001 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
I agree totally that Microsoft leads the OS market simply because unfortunatly of 3 main and very importatnt facts! 1) Hardware support 2) Great sofware that though commercial is not developed for Linux and this should be. Interopeability 3) Rubbish email support Cant import Windows live mail account .iaf format into Linux. setting up email is a pita in linux sloppy really. Overall I have to agree its not just a case of building machines with hardware that UBUNTU supports is a question of widespread development of drivers that support the state of the art hardware like SLI mostly in laptops and for those that are gamers well thge development of games that can be just installed in linux like thy would in windows, teh same for sofware like Photoshop, Autocad, Revit, Microstation, 3dsMAX, SAP, EPOS and on to other industry standards software... That were this to happen I tell you that the marriage inbetween Open source free OS and paid/commercial sofware professionals use would be more appealing for companies to make a switch because either way you look at it your saving a huge amount of money in licensing. no retraining on similar packages and instant more organised productivity and efficiency. The Future of Linux OR UBUNTU in this case is to embrace the standard industry standards that professionals are used too in other ares and maybe then gradually they would give the opensource replacements a try and learn as they go suggesting to companies a use it cause its free its not allways the most appealing approach. Though it makes a great case. People moan about Microsoft rubbish, resource hogging OS that really in the end ends up winning because widespread hardware support on every main stream machine is extremely important I cant use a web cam in linuc x or a scanner at home without using WINE eh nice as that is it still looks sloppy or similar ,messengers are not Video Orientaded like 1 messenger to rule them all Pidgin fo e.g. where it to support a multi Video Chat via the MSN network or its own free protocols man oh man. I praize Linux and the values the ideals of the people that put so much effort into making UBUNTU stand well out and be the most viable distro. I also agree that too many distros that really each try to offer something diffrerent and then people moan about the 50 flavours of Vista eh! Though some education in differences that exist in between Linux and windows I have to say that personally I live with triple boot platforms because each has a unique feature that I like and prefer over the other. but fix these 3 issue and Microsoft will be Broke in no time... And I would switch my whole network to Linux and my works network and many other companies would follow suit. So heres the question how to get commercial developers to develop drivers and sofware for Linux instead. more so that the few that already do... And all with a nice GUI not everyone is a linux Buff people are afraid of a dos prompt never mind being afraid of so much more powerfull Linux Console. Openoffice support on IRC is a joke... jst thought I throw that in. -- Microsoft has a majority market share https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 284238] [NEW] triple booting IBEX
Public bug reported: I have 4 HDD's on my PC first I have to unplug the SATA drives and leave the IDE ones on. Otherwise I never get a bootable HARDY or IBEX but that not the main problem. I have then two IDE Drives one master 500 GB partitioned and XP pro on one and Vista Ultimate on the other. On the second slave IDE HDD 80GB I have a 5GB SWAP and the rest is for Linux hell why not. I tehn modify the Vista BCD to include a pointer to Linux and I get a nive menu with all the OS's and if I picked UBUNTU HARDY I got the boot menu with the generic kernel, repair memetest and Vista longhorn and other OS's That How I wanted my Machine to boot and it worked like a charm. Enter IBEX no longer able to boot into IBEX even having modified pointers to same place I installed the GRUB to (not) MBR I get to boot to IBEX if I make the salve drive the first drive to boot from in Bios. But otherwise forget it. Now someone is gonna say but you can USE GRUB to do the JOB E ugly not N00b friendly if Im trying to convince my friends to double triple boot and I dont wanna be sorting it out for them. Grub editors In Linux are not that great either so GUI orientated on this is not a viable workable solution, Using easyBCD dont work either... ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- triple booting IBEX https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/284238 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 284245] Re: Laptop support XPS M1730 IBEX 8.10
Sorry I should have been more specific Im using 32bit OS, In Hardy wast really supported either even on different laptop well recognised but unable to make a conection so I guess pretty much the same the wifi card is the intel 4965AGN GFX Drivers were opensource at first I installed the nvidia management console and I was using Ibex 8.10 beta I did try the proprietary gfx version 177 or whatnot but made no differnce whatsoever though those drivers are suppose to support SLI on windows environment is Vista 32 bit the latest drivers are 175.32beta dont know if there is a corrrelation with those and Linux or if linux has a dif version numbering. the resolution went to 1920x1200 as it was supposed to but no SLI. After a long while the laptop kept getting hotter and hoter though fans are supposedly trigger by bios I never heard anything going from my point of view IBEX beta was interfering with something either to prevent it breaking or just not to let it work this laptops as dual fans on gfx cards and a fan for CPU, hope that clears something up. -- Laptop support XPS M1730 IBEX 8.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/284245 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 32357] Re: Installer doesn't recognise SATA disks as primary.
Right after I downloaded and started installing the Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS on a mixed sata/ide drive environment I experienced similar issues when placing the MBR onto the IDE drive that I had partinoned and hadson partition 1 XP Pro and on Partions 2 Ubuntu and on partition 3 linux swap the other sata drives just contain data and I thought not much of this untiol I repeatedly experienced error 21 no matter where I placed the ubuntu mbr... Work around is to unplug the sata drives do the install and then when all is fine plug them back up and all is well Solution? well just do what I said... -- Installer doesn't recognise SATA disks as primary. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/32357 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
