In these days I had used nouveau. Today, as suggested, I enabled the
proposed update, refreshed the packages, and tried to enable the nvidia
drivers again. It worked!
I now disabled the proposed updated, since by now the driver is
installed, thanks to everybody.

In the past I had sound (crackling, but working). After some editing of
the alsa configuration I managed to get the correct sound. Then, when
updating to version 18 uf Ubuntu LTS, it disappeared, and all my
attempts to mess with configuration files to restore it failed.
Ok, I found the cause: I had the meta package linux-image-generic
installed, but not the metapackage linux-generic. For that reason, when
kernel was upgraded the package with the kernel headers wasn't upgraded,
and that caused the issue (that of course disappeared reverting to the
previous kernel
