[Bug 1303438] Re: Reveal after enabling Auto-hide Launcher does not work.

2014-04-07 Thread danrgmc
This affects me too. I also noticed that the sensitivity setting when in
'autohide mode' with 'menu bar' selected is uniformly very low. Moving the
slider from one side to the other has almost no effect-rendering this action
too annoying to use.

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-15 Thread danrgmc
Just a suggestion: I'm now going to uncheck 'xorg-edgers' in Synaptic

possible problems with future updates from this 'bleeding edge' repo.

[Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

2012-08-14 Thread danrgmc
I think we finally have this solved! I installed Nvidia driver 304.37 using
this: http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu not wanting to take a
chance on a manual install with my kernel upgrade. (3.4) Kudos to the Nvidia
team for staying with this.
I spent maybe 1 1/2 hours watching Youtube videos-mostly from the Slingshot
Channel which I enjoy greatly and are available in full (1080) HD. No
logouts-no problems so far. Details @ post #60.

Ubuntu 12.04-x86_64 with Firefox 14 Nvidia GeForce 9800GT graphics.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-08-13 Thread danrgmc
@martin: Thank you! Even though my problem wasn't the same as yours, it seems
to be working fine for me. I had been experiencing crashes every time I tried
to watch a Youtube in 'HD mode'. The video would play for maybe 1 or 2 minutes
then I would usually get a complete lockdown-no keyboard or mouse response.
Sometimes I could reboot using 'reisub', but only if I attempted this
immediately.I just finished watching about 15 mins. of the 'Slingshot Channel'
without any problem.
  My system: Asus P7P55d-E mainboard
   Intel I5-750 cpu
   8gb. dual channel ram
Western Digital 'Caviar' 1tb. sata hard drive.
   Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT gpu
   Seasonic X-650 (i think) psu

dual boot Ubuntu 12.04-x86_64 and Windows 7 Professional
 Firefox 14.0.1
 Nvidia driver: 302.17
I need to emphasize that this only seemed to happen when I was watching Youtube
videos. Other sources of HD videos weren't affected.

2012-07-21 Thread danrgmc
I@disorder: I don't think you share what most of us are experiencing. This must
be related by something in the Nvidia drivers since many of us are affected
simply by watching videos; not necessarily streaming or downloading. If I don't
use accelerated graphics or '3
d' mode or if I use the Nouveau driver I never have this problem.

2012-06-16 Thread danrgmc
Looks like we finally got a fix. I just installed Nvidia driver 302.17, watched
a 55 min. Hulu video using Unity 3d without crashing. Prior version 302.11
worked fine in 2d mode only, crashed to login in 3d. I also observed that temp
didn't rise while watching movie. Nvidia settings showed 60-61c. with ambient
29.5c.

I would like to be added as a subscriber to this bug. This finally lists people
with the same type crashes/logouts I have been getting ever since I installed
12.04-x86_amd64. I also receive the same error messages. I can watch videos in
2d mode without problems-when I switch to 3d I start getting random restarts. I
have tried Nvidia drivers 295.40, 295.49, 295.53, 302.07, finally 302.11.
@reason just to let yu know the 30*.** drivers are in the repos.
(ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa). Just last night I upgraded to Ubuntu mainstream kernel
v. 3.4. No problems-with the difference that now I can watch a video for 30-45
minutes without crashing instead of 2-5 mins. Instead of reverting to the
version 290.** some of you did I'm just going to stay with 2d until this gets
fixed.

[Bug 996277] Re: firefox freeze

2012-05-08 Thread danrgmc
I just finished watching an hour long streaming video. At the end of
this program I encountered the exact same problem as when I filed for
this bug. In addition, I now have a system monitoring program in place.
Checking this, while attempting to quit Firefox I found (after
terminating the video) that my cpu usage remained at 26-28%; memory
usage @ 1.5 gb. Normally when watching FF video I can expect cpu @
13-15% and memory useage @ 600-800mb. I hope this helps.

I just want to add that this only seems to affect 3D versions. could
this have anything to do with Compiz? I'm able to watch videos without
logouts using Gnome classic or Ubuntu 2D. I've tried this with Nvidia
drivers: 280.13 (in 11.10-x86_amd64) without any issues, 295.40 both in
12.04-x86_64 and 11.10-x86_64 having 3D logouts, also 295.49
302.07-beta with logouts.

Guys, need to try again. On a positive note, my GPU temp per: Nvidia-settings
lowered to 52 deg. C. Never before been lower than 56.

[Bug 933245] Re: 12.04 desktop artifacts

2012-05-02 Thread danrgmc
@nathanwill: thank you for responding. Right now, I have no accessable screens.
I didn't have any problems with Nouveau, I just wanted the better response I
get from the proprietary drivers. I found that Nvidia had an update: 302.07; I
manually installed it with worse results than I got from the default: 295.40.
Playing a flash video for about 10 secs. caused it to logout. I rebooted-no
screens. I'm not sure how that happened-I've done this quite a few times in the
past without issues.
I have a homebuilt desktop:
Asus P7P55D-E motherboard
Intel I5-750 quad core CPU
Ripjaws ram-8gb
Nvidia 9800GT GPU
Western Digital 1 tb hdd-Windows 7 Professional Ubuntu 11.10 x86_amd64
Western Digital 160 gb ide hdd-I use this for Ubuntu 12.04 x86_amd64
Seasonic 650w 'gold' PSU
I started with the default Nvidia 295.40, logout problems began right away.
Changed to Nouveau, no problems, switched to Nvidia 302.07 and worse logout
problems, rebooted and now no screen. console access only. I hope this helps.
Thank You!

[Bug 992795] Re: random logouts especially while watching flash videos

2012-05-02 Thread danrgmc
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 982710 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/982710

@raymund84: Yes, I agree with you completely. Your symptoms are exactly
the same as mine and I can't see any reason for calling this a duplicate
of #982710. I now have tried 295.40, (default) 295.33, and now the
latest 302.07. None of them work with Ubuntu 3D, but the last works fine
in 2D. (I didn't try 2D with the others) Nouveau runs without problems.
I feel this might be a bug in xorg?

Try adding:

options snd-hda-intel model=auto
or
options snd-hda-intel model=generic

to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

reboot to test in between. Also you may want to run:

alsamixer

and ensure all levels are cranked and unmuted.

Is there any solution to this bug.
Are there any fixes for this bug?

Will upgrading to 10.10 help ? or do I need to do a clean Install of
 10.10

I can say that upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 (clean install) didn't
completely solve the problem. I don't get keyboard instability nearly
as often, however.

[Bug 664912] [NEW] xsane won't load except cli

2010-10-21 Thread danrgmc
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xsane

I've been using xsane with my Canon 8800f flatbed scanner for about 2 wks in
Ubuntu 10.10 amd_X64. after a few scans the program stopped loading. I would
load the program and and only the prefs window appears, the scan window flashes
briefly then disappears to the left of screen. When applying scan, 'scanning'
and 'receiving rgb data' appear but nothing else happens. I can then shut down
program normally-no errors, no freezes or crashes. The only thing I did before
this action started was to make adjustments to some of the parameters. Finally,

Installing the backport as stated in the first answer, i.e. linux-
backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic, then reboot, then I had to
configure the sound service properly (using the GUI, when you clic on
the speaker, usually on the top right of the desktop - Settings,
because the input was disabled by the software, i.e. PulseAudio had the
 mic disabled by default).

All this steps solved the issue for me.

 Best regards,

Hi Yannick, Thank you very much for your response. I finally got my
sound input working by following the steps you outlined here. Have you
had any other issues with your Mobo? I rma'd mine once due to losing my
ethernet link between the mobo modem. This happens very
infrequently-maybe once a month. The only way I've found to correct this
is to shutdown the computer, then remove power for about 1 minute,
reapply power then restart computer. A simple reboot won't work. Asus
tech support can't help-they suggested a possible bad solder point. That
might seem reasonable once, but twice? I also got a new modem from
Qwest. (my internet provider) Another issue I've had is the irqbalance
causing loss of keyboard/mouse control. I've seen from several posts
that this type of mobo seems to be re-occuring. Thanks again for your
help. Dan

Thomas-I can only echo what Clif had to say-exactly the same results. I
followed your instructions and only resulted in losing all audio. I then
reversed the process, now I'm back where I started. I think this mobo
has a different sound card that linux drivers just aren't available yet.
I think I just might RMA this board: Asus P7P55D-E and get something by
Gigabyte instead. I understand they support Linux pretty well; I've got
to do some more research. I'm really disappointed in Asus-their tech
support sure doesn't meet the standards I was led to expect. I feel they
no longer care to support Linux- during 1 contact I made the guy I
talked to actually said I had psu. He obviously just didn't to deal with
my issue. (the built-in network card lost all contact with my isp
[qwest] and after spending 1 1/2 hrs. with them I came to realize I had
a hardware problem. The only way I was able to re-connect was to
completely remove all power to my machine! Just shutting down the normal
way didn't work. This has happened twice.)
Thanks for letting me sound off and trying to help me with this
issue. I'm passing on this info in case somebody else with the same or
similar board might benefit.
