[Bug 347453] Re: [upstream] Calc Input bar error looses last character of pasted content

2011-06-02 Thread davidpbrown
Yes. This is obvious a very old bug now and exiting the cell that
additional space is properly removed but perhaps it shouldn't be
introduced.

It seems the added whitespace isn't actually there but just the
appearance of it. So, if you now press backspace to delete that
whitespace, it is the last character of the content that's removed.

Example, pasting test content value from another cell, you see what appears
to be a space suffix, but deleting that space deletes the last character
non-obviously. You see test as expected in the input bar with the suffix
space removed but in the cell you see the reality tes. That truncated result
then is the stored value when you exit the cell.

[Bug 617964] [NEW] Nautilus crashes on seeing SVG file first time and then on the thumbnails

2010-08-14 Thread davidpbrown
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Nautilus crashes as it enters the folder containing the attached SVG and
others.

Having navigated to the folder once, it seems to be happy to return,
suggesting it's maybe the creation of the thumbnail that's an issue?

Then it will crash again with either left or right click on the
thumbnail and before any option has been selected.

(Apparently others have seen this.. Bug #598503 Invalid for lack of

!! bug caused wrong file to upload .. ignore the .kmz file (I'd delete

So, I tried to upload again from a folder that contained only that one
file and Firefox crashed. I guess that's bound to it's using Nautilus in
some way.

Will try to post the SVG as text instead..

[Bug 598647] [NEW] Firefox crashes following link into iTunes

2010-06-25 Thread davidpbrown
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Firefox 3.6.3 crashes promptly as it follows a link from
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eH4oGJcCzdM through to iTunes.

Restarting, Firefox then falls over each time until the resume for that
page is unticked.

I thought it might be something the page's html code but I used instead
wget and threw it into Firefox, which shows the page ok but for an error
~'invalid parameters' above the main body content. I wonder it's a
header issue then before it reads the html.

[Bug 570336] [NEW] Plain text files through sshfs opening as executables when they're not

2010-04-26 Thread davidpbrown
Public bug reported:

Lucid 10.4 up to date at 26th March 2010
sshfs-fuse Version 2.2-1build1

Despite not have executable set on the permissions, text files through
sshfs are opening as if they are executables.

Obviously, the executable permission should be acknowledged.

It's not clear how many file types this affects but seems to be at least text
files without extension, .txt, .html
However files .odt are fine and an ods file without extension did open
correctly but it's not clear how that happens.

[Bug 292140] Re: [Intrepid] Screensaver activates during full-screen gameplay

2009-05-14 Thread davidpbrown
this is a bug about the lack of a compatible xscreensaver-command
--poke

So the screensaver is ignorant and relies on other programs to poke it
and keep it suppressed rather than behaving in an intelligent way?!

Surely seeing the keyboard or mouse is in frequent use should be
sufficient?? Having one program dependent on others seems contrary to an
object independent approach I'd understood was key behind open source..
you're more expert so defer to your judgment, it just seems odd..

[Bug 370855] Re: Pasting with Middle Mouse Button into Gnome Terminal Delivers Multiple Copies

2009-05-04 Thread davidpbrown
Rethinking the above.. the pasting occurs only if the terminal is
already open. Opening one after copying doesn't work but that might be a
normal function in Ubuntu?..

So, back one step.. it's reproducible, happening in new users as well;
in terminal, gedit, terminator. It just seems the mouse is acting overly
sensitive.

Trying now to alter slightly the timing of the single click gives mostly
two, occasionally three pastes. Holding it down can spawn endless pastes
but only it seems after some slight pause. I don't know if that is
designed in and the first paste it still the issue or if I just need a
new mouse?? Maybe it is just me with this?

2009-05-04 Thread davidpbrown
Yes - reproducible.

Stupidly, I'd not thought to try outside terminal but yes it's happening
in gedit too.

One new thing.. again every time.. copying within the terminal or within
gedit the middle mouse doesn't paste. It's seems to be only from input
the like of firefox, or email text that's doing this. That difference
might be some polymorphic issue??.. that is, it seems copying plain text
only is not pasting anything.

Not sure how a dud mouse would cause this.. and hadn't noticed it in
8.10.

[Bug 347453] [NEW] Openoffice Calc Input bar error looses last character of pasted content

2009-03-23 Thread davidpbrown
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

If one cell contains a formula =test and that cell is then copied and
the content pasted into the 'input line' bar, so that the value only is
pasted, there is then a white space apparent in the 'input line' bar.

That whitespace doesn't disappear on exit+reentry to the cell and when
it's deleted, rather than remove whitespace, results in the last
character from the real cell's content being removed rather than any
whitespace that the input bar suggests is there. This isn't obvious
until you exit+reenter the cell and find the content truncated.

[Bug 292140] [NEW] [Intrepid] Screensaver activates during full-screen gameplay

2008-11-01 Thread davidpbrown
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

If the screensaver is set to activate when computer is idle and idle
time is set, the screensaver activates even if the computer is very
active in the middle of a game, with key presses and mouse movement.

Whether this is because the game (Nexuiz) is in full screen mode, I
don't know but it locks up and is very slow to respond, maybe because
the screensaver is graphic based too.

Coming out of the password lock the system becomes very unresponsive,
black screen, sometime the cursor moves other times not. Even the Ctrl-
Alt-Backspace is unresponsive for a good 10-20 secs, eventually it does
reset itself back to login for a new session but obvious a nuisance.

My guess is the test for idle is failing somehow to see key press and
mouse movement within the full-screen game.

[Bug 231078] [NEW] Firefox right click menu has a mind of its own

2008-05-16 Thread davidpbrown
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

This is hard to reliably reproduce but frequent enough to be a real
nuisance.

When Firefox isn't busy right-click apparently works fine.

When Firefox is working on another tab/window and the user tries to
right-click a link, it sometimes doesn't display the menu but instead
just randomly auto-selects one of the options.

I've seen this enough now to know it's not just me being daft an rolling
the mouse over the selection etc. This is a single unmoved right click
doing this.

It's usually when I'm opening multiple links to load in the background..
a reddit.com list of links for example.

Trying to reproduce this by opening multiple links in other tabs one
after another the closest I'm getting is an occasional slow-down of the
display menu, so I wonder it might be an extension of that when a page
displaying is taking more effort??

Obviously, a fraction of the time I get the result I want but the odds
as against me and I often get the bookmark or save-as instead.

[Bug 227055] Re: VLC seems to cause Firefox-3.0 to crash repeatedly

2008-05-06 Thread davidpbrown
I reread the https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs #Crashes
there is no dbg package created yet for Firefox3 beta users and use
firefox-3.0-dbgsym and xulrunner-1.9-dbgsym was as I did last night.

The second point there could be clearer about having to actually start
gdb by typing gdb to terminal rather than expecting it as the outcome of
the firefox line.

Anyhow using gdb [run ; bt full ; thread apply all backtrace full ;
quit] gave no result suggesting No stack. No registers.

The second part [Obtain a backtrace from an apport crash report (using
gdb)] which I hadn't tried previously then contains elementary errors
like /usr/lib/firefox/firefox-bin: No such file or directory.

So I'm thinking having no dbg package atm is going to prevent us getting
a good backtrace??

$ TMPDIR=$(mktemp -d)
$ apport-unpack /var/crash/_usr_lib_firefox_firefox-bin.1000.crash $TMPDIR
[Errno 2] No such file or directory:
'/var/crash/_usr_lib_firefox_firefox-bin.1000.crash'
$ gdb -nx /usr/lib/firefox/firefox-bin -core $TMPDIR/CoreDump -ex 'backtrace

I don't know if Richard can get a backtrace from this and suggest if
that one's not enough suggest to me how.

[Bug 227055] [NEW] Firefox 3 crash - repeatable example

2008-05-05 Thread davidpbrown
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I've seen a lot of comments of FF3 crashing randomly. I think I have a
consistent example.

Goto
http://dual-n-back.com/nback.html
let the page load then press refresh.

I found this because the auditory sound wasn't working, I don't expect
that's related.

FF3 falls over, I've not got FF2 to try.

Yes it's reproducable. Visiting that website and refreshing.. every time
it seems.

Which flash package do you have installed?
Looking at Tools::Add-ons::Plugins suggests Shockwave Flash 9.0 r124 among
other Plugins

Which Java package do you have installed?
Java's not enabled in Firefox - not sure if the Firefox element you're talking
of is the same but I have sun-java6-bin, sun-java6-jre and icedtea-java7-plugin
+ misc libs

Which firefox extensions do you have installed?
DownThemAll! 1.0.1
NoScript 1.3.2
SQLite Manager 0.2.37
StumbleUpon 3.18
Ubuntu Firefox Modifications 0.5
 and an inactive
Mouse Gestures 1.5.2, legacy from my upgrade from Gutsy.

[Bug 217926] [NEW] Hardy upgrade on Dell Insipiron 530 fails badly

2008-04-15 Thread davidpbrown
Public bug reported:

!! Upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy on Dell Inspiron 530 just failed badly.
Apparently stopping at some ata related error.

After the first reboot the system stalls, Alt-F1, shows only
[ 88.206802]ata1.00 revalidation failed(errno=-5)

Having no success forcing reboot again, I tried to fall back to previous
kernel but NVidia drivers were not engaged and the hardware drivers
panel falls over silently so the resolution is very badly off/unusable.

Trying recovery mode on the new kernal doesn't work but provides a little
more.. the ata related ones start
qc timeout(cmd 0x27)
failed to recover some devices
failed to read native max address err_mask=0x4

argh.. I'm going to have to reinstall Gutsy and stick with it from fear
of this happening again.

2008-03-10 Thread davidpbrown
Sorry, I should have been clearer, this was regarding the database software not
the spreadsheet.
I wonder that I've used the 'Report a bug' function from the help menu and
surprised it's only noted openoffice and not more specific.

This was [day, month, year] sorted by month, day became sorted by day,
month.

I've tried to recreate the problem just now, since this was from
November, but it seems to have been resolved.

Closing..

[Bug 163664] spreadsheet query multiple-sort corrupts on edit

2007-11-18 Thread davidpbrown
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

A spreadsheet query with a multiple sort, doesn't remember the sort if
it's edited and instead replaces with a simple sort, confusing the
original presentation.

For instance, display columns [day, month, year] but sort by month then
day.

That original sort works correctly if there is a forth duplicate column
day (day1) right of the month sort. However saving and editing then
shows instead the sort now is day then month, with the fourth column
showing unsorted.

[Bug 150296] Importing data to Base

2007-10-07 Thread davidpbrown
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Base's lack of import via paste and export functions, from spreadsheet data or
any other, is either seriously lacking or not obvious. Database's are massively
useful for transforming data but user needs to be able to get the data in to
tables easily and out easily!
Very disappointing it's not apparently possible to simply paste data to a table
in the way Access would do.

I've no reason to think it is.. I've only seen it with Firefox recently past

[Bug 117853] Bad case matching on message filters

2007-05-30 Thread davidpbrown
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Message filters for sender field, and likely all email address fields,
appear to be exactly matching case.

Unlike URL's where case can matter on some servers, a email address'
case is not important. That is an email [EMAIL PROTECTED] is identical to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and should be recognised as such but isn't filtered
unless exact match is requested.

Because of this user can't setup filters with any confidence that mail
will be caught, so is limited to blacklisting rather than effective
whitelisting.

I wonder case matching is redundant in all field filters for most
purposes?

jinxed.. doh

From force of habit I used Firefox again and it crashed leaving grub

That Ubuntu's grub reinstall isn't simple meant I just had to completely

reinstalled all packages and settings so am back to where I was.

I thought that would kill it but the bug remains!

So having determined it's not the Mozilla profile and not the Ubuntu

[Bug 117078] Re: firefox crashed

2007-05-27 Thread davidpbrown
Thanks Hilario

There is no crash report in /var/crash and I have only NoScript as an
addon.

However, trying again, I have reproduced this now three times today but
as before with a slight inconsistency.

It seems to occur when a page change is requested from a partly
downloaded page.

Reproduced here by going to Google search Ubuntu themes + choose the
Wallpapers from the list
http://www.gnome-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=170x171x172x173x174

then either before that page has fully loaded switch to Most downloads
or click another tab and then change tab before half way through the
page load. Mouse cursor will still move but unresponsive.. moving off
the Firefox browser doesn't fall back to another window, as above,
keyboard unresponsive to shutdown quits etc.

I had to clear cache to reproduce the third time..

If there is a about:command or other firefox diagnostic and logs that
might help, let me know.

[Bug 117078] Firefox freezing Ubuntu forcing reboot

2007-05-26 Thread davidpbrown
Public bug reported:

I've just had Firefox freezing Ubuntu x10 in a row! The whole system
locks up and is unresponsive.. mouse cursor is frozen and keyboard
unresponsive.. I guess the windows manager crashes.

I've seen other more specific bug reports but I can't relate to them.
The only unique thing I have here is AMD64 and maybe that I click links
before pages are fully loaded.

There's no obvious consistency is the cause or timing.. though it's
always just as a link is clicked. Twice was at gnome-look.org
wallpapers, resorting by most downloaded but this has happened often on
other sites.. rebooting and returning in the same way to the same page
doesn't freeze up. This last hour the most frequently by far. Last time
was clicking the registration link from the email from this site..
almost put me off.

I'm new to Linux so don't know the best way to capture useful data on
this. Java not running, Javascript is enabled and certainly the sites it
happens on are the type to use it and the links that cause it may well
be javascripted (guess).

Serious bug.. I'll look for another browser till it's fixed..
