Complete removal.
pkill tangerine after removal to complete process, as removal itself
does not stop processes still running

When i boot-up for the first time there is no login sound and no sound
system-wide. If i click on a music file to test i can see it playing and
vizualization indicating the motion of sound waves - but no sound.

having set gnugo --mode gtp --quiet in preferences as per quarry's
manual's instructions and set to play computer, when i clicked 'play'
the screen went blank. Presumably it crashed. Tried again and found that
the preferences were not saved and
quarry crashed after i set prefernces to gnugo --mode gtp --quiet
and clicked 'play'

sorry, I meant that you have to start gdb with command:
gdb qgo 21 | tee gdb-qgo.txt
then type:
run
and qgo should start.
and when the crash happens:
