[Bug 938544] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGABRT in raise()

2012-02-22 Thread mniess
The bug linked to, does not exist. This is an incompatibility between nautilus
and the current version of the nautilus-dropbox plugin. When dropbox is
running, nautilus won't start and gives this error:
GLib (gthread-posix.c): Unexpected error from C library during 'Invalid
argument': pthread_cond_timedwait. Aborting.
Aborted

Preventing the plugin from loading (by removing rights) at least brings
nautilus back.

[Bug 923644] Re: Totem running in background causes menu of foreground application (like Opera) to open

2012-02-02 Thread mniess
Okay. So there are two problems to this. #1 Totem incorrectly uses xtest
to send ALT every 30s even though other APIs (dbus) are available to
prevent screensaver-activation. #2 totem does this, when not in focus.

Upstream insists on using xtest as a fallback if no APIs (xscreensaver
or dbus) are available. Totem 3.0.1 has two bugs that seem to be fixed
in 3.2. #1 xtest should only be a fallback and not be used if dbus is
there (in Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04 both are used) and #2 totem in
background shouldn't try to disable the screensaver ([1]).

Precise will not ship the fixed version of totem because of the new
clutter dependencies, so this needs to be fixed in Ubuntu if HUD is
going to be shipped.

[Bug 923644] Re: Totem running in background causes menu of foreground application (like Opera) to open

2012-02-02 Thread mniess
According to Gordon Allott, this bug also causes big problems for Unitys
new HUD since HUD also uses ALT. So if HUD lands in precise it will
render totem unusable. So if this is not resolved in upstream, we
definately need a patch in Ubuntu! The patch proposed in the upstream
bug, seems to do the trick.

[Bug 873545] Re: No GTK theme applied on login / theme lost after gnome-settings-daemon error.

2011-12-04 Thread mniess
Comment #40 explains and fixes the problem. The clipboard manager
integrated in gnome-settings-daemon doesn't work correctly. When an
application (like Opera or Skype) closes, it tries to get the clipboard
content of those applications and crashes. Knowing this I could
reproduce the crash any time.

Open Skype, copy something, close Skype, crash.

Disabling g-s-d's integrated clipboard-manager stops the crashes. If you
need a clipboard manager you can try popular options like Parcellite or
Diodon.

I'll update title and description with this information.

Reading through the comments on the Opera blog this bug seems to be
caused by Flash. So I tried blocking Flash and haven't experienced any

that and report back.

[Bug 880853] Re: nouveau/nv don't work with NVidia 9400GT

2011-10-25 Thread mniess
Dear bugbot. There are two seperate bugs. The one I was reporting is
that the xserver-xorg autodetection choses nouveau for all nvidia cards
(which leads to a non-functioning Ubuntu after install).

The bug in xserver-xorg-video-nouveau is a different one. It is that not
all models of 9400 GT work with nouveau. The first bug (i.e. this bug)
is rather easy to fix (see
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=480393#c1). The second bug
requires a bit more knowledge.

So should I change the affected package back to xserver-xorg?

[Bug 880853] [NEW] nouveau/nv don't work with NVidia 9400GT

2011-10-24 Thread mniess
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 11.10
Release:11.10

lspci -nn | grep VGA
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation G96 [GeForce 9400
GT] [10de:0641] (rev a1)

When booting Ubuntu after a fresh install for the first time, the screen
just goes to black after GRUB. According to a bugreport at redhat
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=480393) this is because of
x-orgs auto-detection. When nvidias vendor-code is seen, xorg will
default to nv/nouveau. Neither work on my machine.

My workaround was booting from a live-cd, chrooting into the ubuntu-
install and installing nvidia-current(-updates) from there.

[Bug 879129] [NEW] Ubiquity forces ecryptfs-encryption by default

2011-10-20 Thread mniess
Public bug reported:

Under certain conditions ubiquity forces the user to encrypt his home.
The option is selected by default and greyed out, so that it cannot be
changed.

This can be reproduced by having a manually partitioned system (with
seperate partitions for /boot, /, /home and swap). At the point of the
installationprocess, where you select the type of installation choose
"Something else" (i.e. manual), pick the partitions you want to use and
set all of them to be formatted except /home.

If there are any pre-existing user dirs and ANY of them contains a
.Private (or .ecryptfs), ubiquity will force encryption on the new main-
user for the new installation. I'm not sure if this is desired.

Okay. So actually this bug IS invalid for gnome-keyring. All components
of gnome-keyring ensure a password change will change the keyring-pw,
too IF you use passwd.

But USERS use gnome-about-me or users-admin to change passwords. Neither
of those change the password for gnome-keyring (or ecryptfs).

[Bug 647064] [NEW] Screensaver activates while video is playing

2010-09-24 Thread mniess
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Ubuntu 10.10 maverick
totem: Installed: 2.31.90-0ubuntu1

On a fully updated vanilla install of maverick (and a fresh user
account) the screensaver activates while playing a video with totem. I
tried VLC and it doesn't happen there, so I assume the bug is either
with totem or with gstreamer.

What happens: After the set activation time (for the screensaver) the
screen starts fading to black. When it is fully faded to black the
screensaver doesn't activate but you see the video again until the next
screensaver-activation-period.

I tried getting some info by running totem from a terminal with
"LANG=POSIX totem file.avi". I used LANG=POSIX to get english output to
post here. I didn't get any output on the terminal but something else
strange happended. The screensaver didn't activate. I ran totem again
without LANG=POSIX and surely the screensaver activated. Setting LANG to
en_US.utf8 also got the screensaver activated. Only POSIX prevents
activating the screensaver. I don't know what this information means,
but I thought it might help.

[Bug 560771] [NEW] include libimobiledevice 1.0 in lucid

2010-04-11 Thread mniess
Public bug reported:

A lot of people use iDevices and the inclusion of the 1.0 release will insure
that the LTS release has full support for all current (incl. iPad) iDevices.
The 1.0 release is feature complete, so that people can do everything in Ubuntu
they could do with iTunes.
- do backups
- install apps
- rearrange springboard icons
- sync pretty much everything

With the currently included version 0.9.7 only the sync'ing of music
will be possible. As full support of iDevices is a major argument for
lucid, please consider upgrading this.

Okay. I figured out, it has nothing to do with the screensaver
activating, but only with the kind of videos you play. Totem
reproducably hangs at the end of 50% of my AVIs. I'll try to make a

those files is wrong, but that shouldn't crash Totem.

With todays karmic I get the exact same errors (and same log content). I
tried it with a password-less private key AND with a password protected
private key, so that can't be the issue.

The information I gave NetworkManager was:
gateway, certificates and key, LZO-compression, port. In the IPv4 settings I
edited the routes and checked the option to only use the connection for the
network I'm connecting to (otherwise the internet-connection would also be
routed through openvpn).

This used to work in jaunty but stopped working in karmic.

BTW: there are ALOT of duplicates of this bug.

[Bug 284212] Re: VPN connection fails: "unable to find valid VPN secrets" (auth dialog crash when secrets exist)

2009-10-22 Thread mniess
In can confirm this doesn't work in karmic with the exact same settings
I used in jaunty (where it worked). I also get "no VPN secrets" when
connecting to an OpenVPN. cmdline client works fine.

If I use a connection with certificates and password, it works. If my
certificates are not password-protected, it doesn't.

[Bug 446359] [NEW] totem hangs at end of video when screensaver activates

2009-10-08 Thread mniess
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Here is how I can reproduce this in the karmic beta (totem
2.28.1-0ubuntu1):

Watch a video in fullscreen until it ends. Totem will stay in
fullscreen. If you don't exit the fullscreen-mode but wait until the
screensaver activates, totem will crash and you won't be able to exit it
(or do anything else). I have to kill totem from a TTY.

I'm not sure if this is a bug with totem or gnome-screensaver. If you
can't reproduce this, let me know what I have to do to help.

[Bug 123064] Re: Upgrade to Eclipse 3.5.0

2009-08-21 Thread mniess
As the description states 3.5.0 is out and SHOULD be tested in karmic to
make it run great in the next LTS release. Ubuntu already is the distro
of choice for most developers. It is sad that they have to get Eclipse
from somewhere else than the Ubuntu repos. So I vote for exchanging 3.4

[Bug 399286] [NEW] Volume control does not behave consistently using mouse-wheel

2009-07-14 Thread mniess
Public bug reported:

gnome-media volume control applet 2.26.1

When you move the mouse on the applet and scroll up and down, everything
works as expected. Scrolling up increases the volume, scrolling down
decreases it. But when you open it (left click) and move the mouse above
the slider the behaviour is inverted.

[Bug 216598] Re: openvpn does not work because of missing dependency

2009-05-13 Thread mniess
Sry for the late reply. I can confirm this works in intrepid and jaunty
without installing nscd. Since I have no more older releases available
for testing I don't have the information you need (in case you still
want to fix this for older releases).

I remember reading something like "nscd: command not found" in the
logs.. that is what got me to install it in the first place (and get
OpenVPN working with NetworkManager).

[Bug 256131] Re: failed to upgrade : "update-xmlcatalog: error: entity already registered"

2008-10-13 Thread mniess
I had the same problem. As soon as the upgrade reached the configuration
of rarian-compat it stopped with an error. All further errors were
because of dependencies to scrollkeeper, which is provided by rarian-
compat.

As others I installed scrollkeeper, finished the dist-upgrade and then
installed ubuntu-desktop (thus removing scrollkeeper and reinstalling
rarian-compat).

I had this problem with a clean install of hardy and another computer
which had the netbook-remix repo enabled. I read through the logs in
/var/log/dist-upgrade but the only information I could get from them was
that it stopped at rarian-compat.

[Bug 216598] [NEW] openvpn does not work because of missing dependency

2008-04-12 Thread mniess
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-openvpn

I'm using X.509 certificates without pw-protection to establish the
OpenVPN connection. It works fine using the openvpn client and a regular
openvpn-config-file. It doesn't work at all using the NetworkManager
plugin.

Looking at /var/log/syslog while connecting, I figured out
NetworkManager makes use of nscd. In no scenario and server/client-
configuration I tried, I was able to get a working VPN-connection
without nscd being installed. Installing it completely fixes the
problem.

So I'd vote for nscd to be a required dependency of network-manager-
openvpn.

If required I can supply you with examples of the server configuration.
I'm using pretty much the default settings, though.

The OpenVPN-Server runs on 6.06 and the clients (needing nscd) are 7.10
and 8.04.

[Bug 137538] Re: [gutsy] notebook instantly powered off while loading ubuntu

2008-01-20 Thread mniess
Just a quick update. I found out that Toshiba finally released a BIOS
update for my notebook (Satellite M30X). For me that fixed everything.
Battery-Monitor works again and the notebook doesn't shut down anymore.
Other people might not be that lucky (to get a BIOS update) so I think
we should still figure out what change causes laptops with broken DSDTs
to shut down. The way I see it Ubuntu "thinks" the battery is empty and
thus shuts the computer down.

So it should determine whether the battery-status information is of any
value, before using it.

[Bug 137538] Re: [gutsy] notebook instantly powered off while loading ubuntu

2007-10-13 Thread mniess
Hi,

got the same problem. I reported #149033. As I reported, there, I could work
around this bug by blacklisting the battery kernel module, so it definiately
must have something to do with the changes made there. The one time I was able
to completely log in, the difference I saw was the following: Previously
(feisty and predecessors) because of the laptops broken DSDT the battery was
just reported as not present. What I saw when I logged in was that it reported
no power cable present but instead an empty battery. Unfortunately I don't know
enough about fixing DSDTs. I tried to fix mine (using common sense) but only
got kernel panics.
Please tell me. if you want me to assemble the above mentioned information,
too. I could also post the DSDT if that helps.

One other thing: all the ACPI stuff worked perfectly under breezy on
that laptop.

[Bug 149033] [gutsy beta] laptop immediately shuts down when reaching gdm

2007-10-04 Thread mniess
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

Problem: The Laptop turns power off when reaching GDM. Sometimes it is
possible to log in, but then it shuts down (unclean) during the start of
Gnome.

Reproduce: Happens on a laptop with a messed up DSDT (i.e. no correct
battery detection). Previously (feisty) Ubuntu assumed that there was no
battery present and the laptop was an power cord. Now it assumes it is
on battery on the battery is on 0%.

Temporary fix (for me): boot laptop with acpi=off and blacklist
battery.ko.

There are alot of laptops with broken DSDTs (and no fixes for them) so
if someone with a similar setup as mine (Toshiba M30X-122) does an
upgrade, they are stuck with a broken system. I think this is unwanted
behavior. For further information please advise me, what you need.

[Bug 22460] Re: Should be warned of upcoming forced fsck

As far as I can see from the corresponding scripts
/etc/init.d/checkfs.sh and /etc/init.d/checkroot.sh a check if the
system is running on battery is already done.

Also these scripts could be easily modified to give the user something like a
10 second delay to cancel the check, and start it otherwise. Is similar
modification was proposed in the German Wiki:

The text is German but the script I'm talking about is commented in English.

[Bug 106741] Re: no crypto filesystem support

2007-05-14 Thread mniess
I do not know if i should report a seperate bug for this, but I think you
should have the option to encrypt filesystems from the beginning on.
USECASE:
Mary wants to install Ubuntu on her work-laptop. During partitioning she picks
an option to put /home on a seperate encrypted partition, so that company data
will be safe if the laptop is stolen.

Having something like this in ubiquity would make Ubuntu even more
appealing for companies, I think.

[Bug 90784] Re: quicksynergy crash on boot

2007-04-22 Thread mniess
When I experienced the above crash my synergy.conf looked like this:

section: screens
   desktop:
   laptop:
end
section: links
   desktop:
   left = laptop
tinyone:
   right = desktop
end

Again, this works fine with syngery started from cmd line, it is just
QuickSymergy that crashes. Looking at the error messages (see attachment
above) it looks like a locales problem, doesn't it?

[Bug 90784] Re: quicksynergy crash on boot

2007-04-21 Thread mniess
Same problem here (in feisty):
quicksynergy 0.5-0ubuntu1
synergy 1.3.1-2ubuntu1

Client mode works finde, but if I want to start the server quicksynergy
terminates (and synergys is not started). I attached the dump from
running it in the terminal.

[Bug 96504] Re: Updated nexuiz depends on unavailable package of data

2007-04-11 Thread mniess
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 95002 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/95002

I can confirm this. On a clean install of edgy it is not possible to
install nexuiz at all. When I want to install it it tells me it depends
on nexuiz-date. So I installed that first and get:

nexuiz:
  Depends: »nexuiz-data (>=2.2.3-1)«, but »2.2.3-1~edgy1« is installed.

So obviously the dependencies of the package nexuiz are a little bit
off.

[Bug 61463] Re: Script that are using bash could be broken with the new symlink

2007-04-10 Thread mniess
I just stumbled upon this bug report and have to leave my opinion.
Especially on the server-side I havily rely on other peoples scripts
working correctly. I really appreciate dash on the desktop, but on the
server? I was thinking about moving my servers from Debian sarge to
Ubuntu 6.06 LTS since some mission-critical software now directly
supports it. But one just can't afford to use an OS on mission-critical
servers whose developers make decisions like these. Break stuff to make
a point. How can you not see that this drives Ubuntu away again from
professional environments. BTW: I am aware that LTS still uses bash as a
default.
