[Bug 923644] Re: Totem running in background causes menu of foreground application (like Opera) to open
Okay. So there are two problems to this. #1 Totem incorrectly uses xtest to send ALT every 30s even though other APIs (dbus) are available to prevent screensaver-activation. #2 totem does this, when not in focus. Upstream insists on using xtest as a fallback if no APIs (xscreensaver or dbus) are available. Totem 3.0.1 has two bugs that seem to be fixed in 3.2. #1 xtest should only be a fallback and not be used if dbus is there (in Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04 both are used) and #2 totem in background shouldn't try to disable the screensaver ([1]). Precise will not ship the fixed version of totem because of the new clutter dependencies, so this needs to be fixed in Ubuntu if HUD is going to be shipped. [Bug 923644] Re: Totem running in background causes menu of foreground application (like Opera) to open
According to Gordon Allott, this bug also causes big problems for Unitys new HUD since HUD also uses ALT. So if HUD lands in precise it will render totem unusable. Comment #40 explains and fixes the problem. The clipboard manager integrated in gnome-settings-daemon doesn't work correctly. When an application (like Opera or Skype) closes, it tries to get the clipboard content of those applications and crashes. Knowing this I could reproduce the crash any time. [Bug 880853] Re: nouveau/nv don't work with NVidia 9400GT
Dear bugbot. There are two seperate bugs. The one I was reporting is that the xserver-xorg autodetection choses nouveau for all nvidia cards (which leads to a non-functioning Ubuntu after install). The bug in xserver-xorg-video-nouveau is a different one. It is that not all models of 9400 GT work with nouveau. The first bug (i.e. this bug) is rather easy to fix (see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=480393#c1). The second bug requires a bit more knowledge. [Bug 647064] [NEW] Screensaver activates while video is playing
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem Ubuntu 10.10 maverick totem: Installed: 2.31.90-0ubuntu1 On a fully updated vanilla install of maverick (and a fresh user account) the screensaver activates while playing a video with totem. I tried VLC and it doesn't happen there, so I assume the bug is either with totem or with gstreamer. What happens: After the set activation time (for the screensaver) the screen starts fading to black. When it is fully faded to black the screensaver doesn't activate but you see the video again until the next screensaver-activation-period. I tried getting some info by running totem from a terminal with "LANG=POSIX totem file.avi". I used LANG=POSIX to get english output to post here. I didn't get any output on the terminal but something else strange happended. The screensaver didn't activate. I ran totem again without LANG=POSIX and surely the screensaver activated. [Bug 216598] [NEW] openvpn does not work because of missing dependency
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: network-manager-openvpn I'm using X.509 certificates without pw-protection to establish the OpenVPN connection. It works fine using the openvpn client and a regular openvpn-config-file. It doesn't work at all using the NetworkManager plugin. Looking at /var/log/syslog while connecting, I figured out NetworkManager makes use of nscd. In no scenario and server/client- configuration I tried, I was able to get a working VPN-connection without nscd being installed. Installing it completely fixes the problem. So I'd vote for nscd to be a required dependency of network-manager- openvpn. If required I can supply you with examples of the server configuration. I'm using pretty much the default settings, though. [Bug 199234] [NEW] [Hardy] Integration produces nonsense results
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: qtiplot The qtiplot version included in hardy universe (0.9.3~rc2-2) has serious bugs with the integration over a specified set of data. Since integration can be considered core functionality of the program, the lack of it makes it useless in everyday usage. [Bug 137538] Re: [gutsy] notebook instantly powered off while loading ubuntu
Just a quick update. I found out that Toshiba finally released a BIOS update for my notebook (Satellite M30X). For me that fixed everything. Battery-Monitor works again and the notebook doesn't shut down anymore. Other people might not be that lucky (to get a BIOS update) so I think we should still figure out what change causes laptops with broken DSDTs to shut down. The way I see it Ubuntu "thinks" the battery is empty and thus shuts the computer down. [Bug 137538] Re: [gutsy] notebook instantly powered off while loading ubuntu
Hi, got the same problem. I reported #149033. As I reported, there, I could work around this bug by blacklisting the battery kernel module, so it definiately must have something to do with the changes made there. The one time I was able to completely log in, the difference I saw was the following: Previously (feisty and predecessors) because of the laptops broken DSDT the battery was just reported as not present. What I saw when I logged in was that it reported no power cable present but instead an empty battery. Unfortunately I don't know enough about fixing DSDTs. I tried to fix mine (using common sense) but only got kernel panics. Please tell me. if you want me to assemble the above mentioned information, too. I could also post the DSDT if that helps. One other thing: all the ACPI stuff worked perfectly under breezy on that laptop. -- [gutsy] notebook instantly powered off while loading ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/137538 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 149033] [gutsy beta] laptop immediately shuts down when reaching gdm
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22 Problem: The Laptop turns power off when reaching GDM. Sometimes it is possible to log in, but then it shuts down (unclean) during the start of Gnome. Reproduce: Happens on a laptop with a messed up DSDT (i.e. no correct battery detection). Previously (feisty) Ubuntu assumed that there was no battery present and the laptop was an power cord. Now it assumes it is on battery on the battery is on 0%. Temporary fix (for me): boot laptop with acpi=off and blacklist battery.ko. There are alot of laptops with broken DSDTs (and no fixes for them) so if someone with a similar setup as mine (Toshiba M30X-122) does an upgrade, they are stuck with a broken system. I think this is unwanted behavior. [Bug 61463] Re: Script that are using bash could be broken with the new symlink
I just stumbled upon this bug report and have to leave my opinion. Especially on the server-side I havily rely on other peoples scripts working correctly. I really appreciate dash on the desktop, but on the server? I was thinking about moving my servers from Debian sarge to Ubuntu 6.06 LTS since some mission-critical software now directly supports it. But one just can't afford to use an OS on mission-critical servers whose developers make decisions like these. Break stuff to make a point.
