[Bug 1621265] Re: lose monitor during boot up if I don't add 'nomodeset' to kernel options

2016-09-23 Thread seeker5528
seems to be something between 4.5-rc7 and 4.5

Been a long time since I compiled a kernel and never used git before.

Could not get the kernel to compile in Yakkety.

After refreshing myself on the use of make-kpkg, compiled 4.5 on my
debian unstable box and installed and booted on my yakkety box with no
issues.

First kernel compiled as part of the bisect process installed fine,
shows the issue on boot up.

Looks like I'm on my way.

Installed mainline linux-image-4.8.0-040800rc5-generic, do not see the
issue with that kernel.

2016-09-07 Thread seeker5528
Christopher, I filed the report and subscribled you.

For others following here.

Did also find out in my case it happens when the monitor is attached
with a VGA cable.

It does not happen if I use a DVI cable to connect the monitor.

Still have to test have to test with monitor connected on HDMI port.

[Bug 1621265] [NEW] lose monitor during boot up if I don't add 'nomodeset' to kernel options

2016-09-07 Thread seeker5528
Public bug reported:

If I connect my monitor to my computer with a VGA cable, I have to stop
at the grub menu and add 'nomodeset' to the kernel options with all the
4.4.0-* kernels.

If I do not add 'nomodeset' to the kernel options, my monitor goes
blank, complains of no video signal, then goes to sleep as soon as the
kernel attempts to enable mode setting.

Turning the monitor off and back on does not help, unplugging the VGA
cable and connecting the DVI cable does not help. I have to hit
'Ctrl'+'Alt'+'Del' and wait for the computer to restart or hit the power
button and wait for the computer to shutdown.

If I connect the monitor to the computer with a DVI cable, I do not have
to add 'nomodeset' to the kernel options, everything works as expected.

I do not have the option for HDMI on the monitor currently attached.
Will see if I can get that tested either with another monitor or DVI to
HDMI adapter.

[Bug 1568429] Re: 1002:68b8 Radeon won't work with KMS enabled

2016-09-05 Thread seeker5528
Symptoms are as reported by others. Whether it's during boot or
attempting to enable after boot up. Screen goes black, reports no video,
then goes to sleep.

When it happens on boot, I can hit 'Ctrl'+'Alt'+'Del' or hit the power
button and the machine will reboot or shut down so things are still
running, just the video output that's dead.

[Bug 1568429] Re: 1002:68b8 Radeon won't work with KMS enabled

2016-09-05 Thread seeker5528
Don't know where mode setting broke, had my box set aside for a while,
so didn't get all my normal updating in.

I'm on Yakkety.

The most recent Ubuntu kernel that I have on my machine that did KMS was
4.3.0-5.16

None of the 4.4 kernels images work without adding nomodeset to the grub
options.

Here is a listing showing the versions of the Ubuntu 4.4 kernel images I
have installed.

  Installed: 4.4.0-37.56
  Installed: 4.4.0-21.37
  Installed: 4.4.0-22.40
  Installed: 4.4.0-9136.55
  Installed: 4.4.0-25.44
  Installed: 4.4.0-33.52
  Installed: 4.4.0-18.34

Currently have these Debian kernel images installed and mode setting
works with both of them.

seeker@ubuntu:~$ apt policy linux-image-4*amd64 | grep Installed -B 1

WARNING: apt does not have a stable CLI interface. Use with caution in
scripts.

--
linux-image-4.5.0-2-amd64:
  Installed: 4.5.5-1

Before installing 4.4.2-1 I tried 4.4.6-1 and it also did mode setting.

I have and AMD FM1 chip on an MSI A55M-P33 Motherboard. Video hardware
is listed this way by lspci.

[Bug 794315] Re: lightdm forgets to source /etc/profile and ~/.profile

2015-03-22 Thread seeker5528
Is it a prerequisite?

It was done in the past so there is a strong argument that is should
continue.

If it is Ubuntu policy that '~/.profile' get sourced by the display
manger, all the display managers should do it and the sample file should
not indicate it is intended for the login shell.

Which indicates to me I should not expect '~/.profile' to get sourced if
a display manager is handling the login or if I am starting one shell
from another shell.

If it is not policy then various places where these things are
documented should give more complete information on when you should
expect it to work.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnvironmentVariables

Gives the expectation it should work...

But right after they link to

http://userbase.kde.org/Session_Environment_Variables/en

Which does not say anything about '/etc/profile' or '~/.profile'.

So should I take it that I should not expect kdm to source these files
or is the sole purpose of the link to give you additional KDE specific
options?

And I don't see on the community documentation page anyting about
'~/.xsessionrc' (Debian) or '~/.xprofile' (Redhat).

Should we expect one or both of these to work and should we expect them
to continue working in the future with Mir and Wayland?

More discussion there than should be had in a bug report for lightdm,
presenting them here so the questions are out there for future thought.

[Bug 1385261] Re: package initramfs-tools 0.103ubuntu8 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2014-12-21 Thread seeker5528
initramfs-tools failed to upgrade for me too. doing

dpkg --configure -a

indicated no space left on /tmp

df -h indicated /tmp mounted on overflow 1m total 0 free.

I logged out, switched to a VT, logged in and did

sudo su
export TMPDIR=/var/tmp
dpkg --configure -a

which allowed the initramfs-tools and kernel upgrades to complete.
Rebooted and everything seems fine for the moment.

Sorry about not keeping up on this, had to give up the system this was
happening as a loaner for a little bit.

I'm attaching the last term.log file where this was failing.

I finally got around it by looking at the installed gconf stuff to come
up with this:

dpkg --purge --force-depends libgconf-2.4 libgconf-2.6-1c2
libgconf2.0-cil libgconf2-4 gconf-service-backend gconf-service gconf-
defaults-service gconf2-common gconf2

: after that I was able to do 'apt-get -f install' and the necessarry
gconf stuff was pulled in and installed correctly.

[Bug 901846] [NEW] linux image failure to install when failing to find ext theme directory

2011-12-08 Thread seeker5528
Public bug reported:

On a multiarch i386 system the kernel image failed to install: linux-
image-3.2.0-3-generic_3.2.0-3.9_amd64.deb

Previously I had installed memtest86+:amd64 package which forced out the
syslinux packages.

While troubleshooting went back to the i386 package of memtest86+,
reinstalled the syslinux packages and related theme packages.

While uninstalling extlinux and attempting to re-install, it also
started having the same complaints.

The first issue was not finding a ´/usr/share/syslinux/themes/debian'.

I created a symlink to the directory for the theme I have installed
´debian - ubuntu-precise´, then attempting to install extlinux and
kernel image twice resulted in failure to find
´/usr/share/syslinux/themes/debian/extlinux´ at which point I created a
directory with that name.

That seemed to make dpkg happy, it indicated the installation of these
packages completed successfully.

[Bug 901859] [NEW] lubuntu-default-settings, multiarch, dependency issue

2011-12-08 Thread seeker5528
Public bug reported:

On an i386 system I installed lxsession:amd64, which caused lubuntu-
default-settings to be removed.

To work around the issue I let Synaptic remove lubuntu-default-settings
while updating packages, then use ´dpkg -i --force-depends´ to force it
back on the system after I have finished with Synaptic.

[Bug 817718] Re: [Oneiric] Wrong dependency in usb-creator 0.2.31

2011-07-29 Thread seeker5528
Why is the dependency wrong? libunity is required so that the
integration works on systems with Unity installed (note, the dependency
is libunity, and not unity). Making it a recommends adds extra run-time
complexity to check if things are installed.

Doesn't it have to do the same run time checks whether the library is
installed or not?

If the library is installed does it not have to check to see if Unity is
installed or not?

Wouldn't it make more sense to make libunity a dependency of the package
(packages?) that provide the launcher/places functionality instead of
the ones that could use it if it's running?

[Bug 739068] Re: Cycling through app windows and apps themselves need improvement

2011-04-06 Thread seeker5528
If I go to 'CCSM -- Utility' and enable 'Scale Addons' , then when I
double click the application icon to view the open windows I can right
click those windows to zoom in/out.

Is there a reason this is not enable by default?

And would the people that have issues with the current behavior accept
this as a reasonable alternative to changing how the icons on the task
bar work?

[Bug 688816] Re: Don't create windows over the panel

2011-01-21 Thread seeker5528
The launcher would set a soft strut that would encourage initial window
placement outside of the strut, but not be a strict enforcement as in
the panel case.

There is a secondary issue. There should be a sticky spot at the edge of
the panel so you can easily drag a window up next to the panel and drop
it to butt against the panel without causing the panel to be hidden, but
also allowing you to continue dragging to the edge of the screen if you
really want the window next to the edge similar to the way you might
have a sticky spot at the edge of the screen so you can easily butt the
window to the edge of the screen, while still allowing you to continue
dragging the window so it is partially off screen if you wish.

Later, Seeker

[Bug 695831] [NEW] libgtk3.0-0 should supply libgtk-x11-3.0.so.0 but doesn't

isn't.

[Bug 612751] Re: Alsa-oss compatibility modules should be recommends not depends

2010-10-18 Thread seeker5528
Removed Festival so I could update some of the other related stuff
without having to pull in the alsa-oss compatibility modules.

Upon doing so had to remove plasma-widget-translatoid because it depends
on Festival.

[Bug 640449] Re: package samba 2:3.5.4~dfsg-1ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: il sottoprocesso vecchio script di post-installation ha restituito lo stato di errore 1

2010-09-16 Thread seeker5528
I see something like this as well in my Maverick install. Samba
installation just stops during the post install.

Looks to me like the set up part of the post install happens correctly
and somewhere in the restarting samba and exiting the post install
script phase it fails.

Installing from the command line I was able to hit the 'Ctrl'+'C' at the
point where it just stops during the post install and it proceeded with
the rest of the stuff normally and I am able to go to 'Places --
Network' and access my Windows shares.

[Bug 628087] Re: Maverick ubiquity lacks option to change computer name

2010-09-01 Thread seeker5528
For the typical home use situation, having the user name as the host
name doesn't really seem like much of a security risk, in a corporate
situation I would be more inclined to think about the security
implications.

Duplicate hostnames on the network seems like a much bigger issue.

The best solution to me would be to have a single page where as you type
in your desired user name in the username box, also have an editable
hostname box that has a random segment that gets generated when the page
comes up and a username segment that is filled as the user types their
desired username so you end up with a 'username-' type hostname
by default.

If the user doesn't care about or is happy with the default hostname
they could then just hit next, if they want to change it they click on
or tab to the hostname box, put in their desired hostname and hit next.
No muss, no fuss.

[Bug 607463] [NEW] Custom session: panel applet non-functional

2010-07-19 Thread seeker5528
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-appmenu

If I start the normal Ubuntu Gnome session the panel app seems to work.

If I use a custom session by creating a .desktop file in
'/usr/share/xsessions/' with the contents:

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Default Xsession
Comment=This runs ~/.xsession
Exec=/etc/X11/Xsession

: and a '~/.xsession' file with the contents:

exec /usr/bin/gnome-session

Then choose 'Default Xsession' at login, the only thing the only thing
the appindicator applet ever shows is the text 'Desktop' and when you
click on that the text 'Desktop Menus will go here'.

[Bug 588940] Re: Xorg freeze drm radeon 'Faild to schedule IB'

2010-06-12 Thread seeker5528
Had enough running time now to consider the issue closed, my best guess
is that it must have been some kind of firmware issue that was fixed by
the newer linux-firmware package, since I seem to be the only one that
was affected, changing the status of the bug.

[Bug 588940] Re: Xorg freeze drm radeon 'Faild to schedule IB'

2010-06-07 Thread seeker5528
I'm a little hesitant to say this is fixed until I get more running
time, but since the framebuffer and linux-firmware packages were updated
I switched X back to using the radeon driver, ran for a while with no
lock ups, took the 'nomodeset' option out of the boot up and am
currently running Gnome with Mutter as the window manager.

I do get an error about an invalid frame buffer ID now.

[Bug 591031] [NEW] With LXDM as display manager '~/.xprofile' not parsed.

2010-06-07 Thread seeker5528
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lxdm

If I create a .xprofile file in my home directory and for example add
the line:

[Bug 588940] Re: Xorg freeze drm radeon 'Faild to schedule IB'

2010-06-03 Thread seeker5528
Have you tried booting with pci=nomsi ?

Nothing in /proc/interupts made it look like msi was being used, but I
tried the 'pci=nomsi' thing anyway, no difference.

There is a difference with the 'nomodeset' in there, in that it takes
longer for there to be a problem, less likely to be hard locked, the
status key on the keyboard changes when I press numlock and 'Sys
Rq'+'B' reboots the system.

But also on the down side when 'nomodeset' is in there and X becomes
unresponsive, it always seems to be that 'Ctl'+'Alt'+'F1' and 'Sys
Rq'+'K' have no effect so there is no switching to VT 1 or killing
everything in VT 7 and there doesn't seem to be any clues left behind in
syslog, Xorg.log or .xsession-errors that really seem like an indicator
pointing towards a possible cause.

[Bug 588940] Re: Xorg freeze drm radeon 'Faild to schedule IB'

2010-06-02 Thread seeker5528
For other who might run into this even going into failsafe mode I had to
hit the 'E' key to edit the boot entry and add 'nomodeset' to the boot
options, then choose the 'root console' option off the failsafe menu,
then create the generic xorg.conf to specify vesa as the driver to use:

# Generic xorg.conf

Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
Driver vesa
EndSection

Section Monitor
Identifier Configured Monitor
EndSection

Section Screen
Identifier Default Screen
Monitor Configured Monitor
Device Configured Video Device
EndSection

#End of xorg.conf

: Then edit /etc/default/grub to add 'nomodeset' to the options:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nomodeset

: then issue the command:

update-grub

: to update the relavant grub configurations.

[Bug 270762] [NEW] wireless fails when configured in interfaces while networkmanager is installed

2008-09-15 Thread seeker5528
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Ubuntu Intrepid

Networkmanager Version: 0.7~~svn20080908t183521+eni0-0ubuntu2
WPA Supplicant version: 0.6.4-2
wireless card: 00:0c.0 Network controller: RaLink
RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI
wireless driver:rt61pci

I configure my wireless in the interfaces with.

iface wlan0 inet static
address 192.168.1.10
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1
dns-nameservers 68.87.85.98 68.87.69.146
wireless-essid [my ssid]
wireless-key [my WEP key]

it fails while networkmanager is installed, work after I
purge network manager.

If I ifdown/ifup the interface it looks like everything gets configured,
address, netmask, etc but something fails while authenticating so it
disassociates from the access point.

My next thought was maybe if fails because networkmanager wants to use
the wpa-supplicant, but I did not supply wpa options or that WEP fails
with wpa-supplicant with my card/driver combination, with some research
I found this configuration works..

iface wlan0 inet static
address 192.168.1.10
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1
dns-nameservers 68.87.85.98 68.87.69.146
wpa-ssid [my ssid]
wpa-key_mgmt NONE
wpa-wep_key0 [my WEP key]

.So wpa-supplicant can do WEP with my combination of card
and driver.

With the above working configuration that uses the wpa-* options I fired
up synaptic and selected network-manager-kde for installation, letting
it pull in the rest of the networkmanger packages and rebooted the
system.

After rebooting I opened a terminal and ran ifconfig which displayed not
configuration for wlan0 and iwconfig shows encryption being disabled.
After doing ifdown, then ifup, then ifconfig shows address, gateway,
etc... attempting to ping the router fails, iwconfig shows encryption is
still disabled.

I copied /var/log/syslog to my home directory for inclusion with this
bug report, attachment follows. Then purged the networkmanager packages
and rebooted and the wirless works again.

[Bug 264165] [NEW] Intrepid: resolvconf interface cleanup fails during boot.

2008-09-02 Thread seeker5528
Public bug reported:

On intrepid using resolvconf 1.42ubuntu1. Early in the boot process I
see a message that resolvconf failed to delete
/etc/resolvconf/run/interface/wlan0.int. Or whatever interfaces have
been active when last booted and have dns-nameservers entries in the
/etc/network/interfaces file.

The reason given for the failure is because the filesystem is read only.

[Bug 208905] [NEW] Apt-listchanges issue with libdb4.6 created db

2008-03-29 Thread seeker5528
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apt-listchanges

The Debian maintainer is indicating this is a result of python
downgrading the database stuff to only work with db stuff earlier than
4.6, so I don't know if this currently is an issue when upgrading since
it's been a known problem there in the lenny/sid stuff.

In Hardy I was getting a message indicating the listchanges.db was
corrupt.

This is the part that bugs me.

Tried deleting the file so the db gets rebuilt, same thing.
Tried purging apt-listchanges and re-installing same thing.

Using synaptic and selecting libdb4.6 for removal so I would only have
earlier versions installed results in a message that other packages will
be removed, so I cancelled the operation.

The only solution that worked was to install db4.6-util and db4.5-util
then from the command line do:

sudo db4.6_dump -f listchanges.db.dump /var/lib/apt/listchanges.db
sudo mv /var/lib/apt/listchanges.db /var/lib/apt/listchanges.db.backup
sudo db4.5_load -f listchanges.db.dump /var/lib/apt/listchanges.db
