[Bug 308445] [NEW] OpenOffice Presentation 3.0 (build:9358) crashes at certain slides containing graphics

2008-12-15 Thread spandanj
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Hi,

After an upgrade to Openoffice 3.0 recently, the presentation crashes
everytime I reach slide 14 in this powerpoint [attachment] in normal
mode. Also, it happens in all my powerpoints which contain a slide like
slide 14 in this file. It doesn't crash in 'notes' mode or in full-
screen presentation.

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

--Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must undergo the
fatigue of supporting it.--

the problem with using obscure quotes is that they are, well, obscure.
It shows your erudition, but does not really make your point, which
is??

--John Botscharow

Dear John,

did you take a moment to think about how the quote aptly describes the
Linux softare philosophy and its application. If you had, it would be
very clear to you that blessings of freedom in linux is the diversity in
software and ideas, while the fatigue of supporting it would be the
endless task of integrating the various softwares and ideas, keeping up
with new versions/updates without ever breaking the system.

That would probably the most direct meaning that you should have been
able to deduct from the quote as it applies to the linux world. Of
course, it runs much deeper than that. But, I can't expect you to any
deeper because for you the quote is just obscure and erudite.

I will not make an assumption that you are either pretentious or
unintelligent. Hopefully, you were just too lazy to give it a thought.
Now you know the quote is neither obscure nor erudite, but only fitting.
I hope you agree.

you are right, kylea...heh

no point in fighting. but they are are all true (the quotes).

I looked into fedora 10reading up on what I need to take care in
terms of proper installation and function of hardware. Man, after taking
a peek fedora 10 and how difficult they make things for users, I am
happy I am with Ubuntu.

However, they are the true linux users because they only run on open-
source software. Kudos to them.

But, in real world, only open source software doesn't cut it. atleast
not yet. Ubuntu makes it easy, and doesn't make the user learn the CLI.
Kudos to ubuntu.

Free software is intrinsically a better way to build software, I
believe. But we should not plan to be judged on our morals, we should
expect to be judged on our software. We have to deliver something that
LOOKS and FEELS better, then we can expect people to embrace it fully.
And once people realise they can have something that is better AND
sustainable AND comes with many freedoms, the world will be a
fundamentally different place. That is our goal.

[Bug 240230] Re: does not support pulseaudio

2008-12-10 Thread spandanj
Audacity doesn't work with pulse audio. I have the perfectsetup for
pulse audio using the guide on perfect setup.

There is no other audio editor for linux that I Know of. If you know any
that works with pulse, please add as an comment. thank you.

This is Beyond Annoying that a basic function of providing sound/audio
of an operating system is not met by Ubuntu. And, I mean a WORKING audio
that doesn't require a user to fix to make it work.

I believe this opinion is worth mentioning here as a way to convey some
common sense to the developers: Make basic things work-out-of-box! like
system-wide sound. Until you do, Bug +1 shouldn't be about microsoft;
instead, it should be make basic things work-out-of-box. Until then,
you are playing catch-up to microsoft, apple, no matter what your
opinion is.

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2008-12-10 Thread spandanj
In my opinion bug #1 should be:

Catch up to functionality/user-friendliness of Microsoft or Mac

that is if I am correct in understanding that you mean you want to gain
market share when you report microsoft hold on market as bug #1

Are developers really that oblivious to the simple fact that the only
thing that matters in gaining market share is 1) Make things work out-
of-box--hardware, common softwares, 2) User-friendliness-- looks and
functionality, 3) better features,

Ubuntu seriously lacks in user-friendliness/functionality that is found
in Microsoft and apple. Few examples from my own experience of using
Ubuntu for a year are: 1) Audio setup problem--alsa, pulse, etc is still
not solved and that a 'proper' sound system doesn't work out of box like
in win xp I had. I don't know what the problem is but it doesn't work
Out-of-the-box. 2) featureless file browser compared to Finder in mac.
3) no control panel. 4) video player doesn't work out-of-box. etc. 5)
Having to deal with terminal. I could go on for a few more.

These drawbacks of holding back Ubuntu to let users utilize and enjoy
the advanced features that it offers--compiz is the only one that
comes to my mind. Again, remember that if the user has to hassle around
just to make an advanced feature work on OS, you can't call that an
advanced feature! ie. an advanced feature that lacks an easy access by a
regular (non-terminal user) user, it's basically non-functional. Do
developers agree with me here?

The only praise I can give to Ubuntu is it's ideology of open and free
software. Although the ideology provides greater freedom, unfortunately,
it hasn't proven to be better than closed source in terms of making
human-computer interface and experience easier, which is all that
matters at the end of the day.

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2008-12-10 Thread spandanj
Please take a look at the following article:

http://www.informationweek.com/news/software/linux/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=212100714

where it presents causes and solutions to fixing linux. The causes can
be summed up as too many choices lead to fragmentation before it leads
to or along with innovation. You can't bring innovation if different
software/components won't work with each other in the first place.
Although open source sounds much better than closed source
philosophically, it's implementation to provide user-friendly computer
experience is not achieved--IMO, mainly due fragmentation of software.
The greatest advantage of open-source philosophy ie. to allow freedom of
choice to design as per a particular individual or a group's preference
and inspiring innovation, is also it's greatest weakness because it
leads to fragmentation at many levels which eventually leads to sub-par
user experience. Obviously, in theory, by allowing anyone to contribute
in bringing change to the linux software universe, it should bring
faster innovation than in a closed-source enviroment where an authority
holds power over what changes are allowed. However, open source software
(OSS) fails because the changes and innovation are not co-ordinated --
a direct result of a lack of supreme authority. very good example that I
know of is the Audio API -- alsa, pulse, etc. Very annoying. In fact,
such fragmentation hinders innovation. Consider the fact that there
isn't an audio editor that works under ubuntu 8.04 that supports pulse.
Compare that to a universe of audio editors available for windows
platform! Software developers working with windows are fully aware and
clear about specifications for design because there's only one
specification--windows. That is much easier than fitting to not only
many but also ever-changing specifications found in linux universe!

That is the fallacy of choice. Due to this fallacy, the potential for
open source innovation is not realized and leads to a chaotic user
experience.

What I would like to know is the steps taken to overcome this fallacy.
Please list them here. Is FOSS one of them? Open standards?

[Bug 307050] [NEW] Update ubuntu repositories to OpenOffice 3.0

2008-12-10 Thread spandanj
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Please,

update openoffice to 3.0 in default ubuntu repository.

What happened to providing a linux user the latest and greatest open
source has to offer. It's been two months since 3.0's release. Would I
be waiting for Office 2008 ONCE it was released to install it in a
windows OS? No.

I would install 3.0 myself if I weren't afraid of breaking some software
in doing so. Also, I don't want to deal with terminal. where's the
double click .deb so that i can replace OOo 2.4 to 3.0. OR UPDATE the

[Bug 179042] Re: Videos tear and blink when enabling compiz [AMD Feature #7647]

2008-10-31 Thread spandanj
I have a few questions to clear up my understanding of this problem. It
would be great if You can answer them.

1) Does VLC or WMP in windows use opengl to playback video?
2) Does windows have the capability to use opengl in more than one software? or
mac? Meaning, Is the problem that OpenGL cannot be used simultaneously (eg.
compiz and google-earth) smoothly the major problem in ubuntu?
3) does x11 as a playback device for Mplayer show video with less quality than
OpenGL?
4) What's the issue with DRI2? I have complete lack of understanding of DRI,
what it is, etc. So, in better words, when can I expect a complete and true
solution to this problem (OpenGL used by 1 soft. at a time? --right?)

[Bug 283555] [NEW] OOO-Impress crashes upon viewing notes master

2008-10-14 Thread spandanj
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-impress

1) I open a .ppt presentation from my school website
2) ppt is made by professor, most probably in microsoft
3) when I switch to notes view, the slide is squeezed vertically
4) I try to repair this by:

view--master--notes master

When I click on notes master it crashes. I can recover the ppt file when
i restart Impress. This does not happen on new impress documents.
However, all the ppts I download from my school site have note pages
with the slide SQUEEZED, so I have to resize them. Until now, I did this
for every .ppt, but now trying to access the notes master crashes
Impress.

This only began to happen after I upgraded to latest kernel to .24-21

I have OOO 2.4.1 installed on Ubuntu 8.04.

[Bug 179042] Re: Videos tear and blink when enabling compiz

2008-10-05 Thread spandanj
Solution by Omega does not work

for HD 720p movies

I use x11 in smplayer. when i run a 720p movie, it drops frames a
Lot=unwatchable. when I select opengl instead, the video is smooth, but
there's blinking and tearing.

I have no complains with x11 with normal resolution movies. but, i can't
watch 720p movies with x11. it's too laggy. What should I do?

[Bug 179042] Re: Videos tear and blink when enabling compiz

2008-10-05 Thread spandanj
the 720p movie i was trying to watch was TMNT. it was in .mkv format. If
the problem is not in x11 in smplayer, it either is 1) corrupt file, 2)
too high bitrate in the action scenes. I am encoding a lower resolution
one.

However, can a developer assigned to this bug please send out an email to all
the subscribers of this email what the status is on this bug. When
(realistically) should we expect a proper (final) solution to this bug. Can a
developer just do thattell us in an email. I just want to know if I should
move back to xp if the solution will take long to come, something to do with
DRI2. Just need a summary in simple language from a developer.

thanks.

better support, less bugs.

after the kernel update to '-18', and still having VBox ose module that

sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-source /
sudo module-assistant update /
sudo module-assistant prepare /
sudo module-assistant a-i virtualbox-ose /
sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv restart /

It works...BUT somehow the audio doesn't work...

SCRATCH that. It didn't work with the ALSA that i was using previously.
after the 5 steps here i had the change the audio from ALSA to Pulse.
does this mean anything? bad?

ALSO, once the virtualbox-ose-modules-generic 2.6.24-18' is updated in
the ubunty repositories, can i simply update it normally. ie. will these
5 steps that i conducted affect or even not allow me to update to the

[Bug 231519] [NEW] pixeleted video playback upon fullscreen

2008-05-17 Thread spandanj
Public bug reported:

I have Ubuntu 8.04 installed on a dell inspiron 6400 dual core, with ATI
mobility radeon x1400.

Compiz works fine. However, video playback of any video when run full
screen is Pixelated in vlc. normal playback in a window at 1X zoom is
fine. If you would like more information about my configuration, please
let me know, and how. all packages used are from ubuntu repos. and ati
driver is from restricted modules. I have xserver-xorg xgl uninstalled.

I expect the playback to be SMOOTH and clear like in windows. Atleast in
gutsy it was not pixelated, though it was choppy with sync problems and
screen tearing.

** Affects: ubuntu
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
