[Bug 77374] Re: Crash when launch www.marabu-kreativ.de

2008-09-27 Thread wolfchri
Thank you for reporting this bug.

However, I will change the status in fix released as I can not
reproduce this bug in neither Hardy nor Intrepid, neither on x86 or
AMD64 (Flash 9, 10 RC1).

Check out Ubuntu 8.10, due in 4 weeks. Hope to see you back using
Ubuntu, then.

[Bug 263555] Re: [intrepid] 2.6.27 e1000e kernel places Intel gigE chipsets at risk

2008-09-23 Thread wolfchri
Folks,

I suggest to remove the respective Intrepid AlphaX images from the
mirrors ASAP.

Although testing is testing, and everybody knows that there is a risk (I
remember a similar issue with Mandrake Linux and CD-Rom drives) and you,
as a tester, take a known risk, we also have the responsibility to
minimize impact of this issue.

I think only the latest Alpha6 has this flaw?

[Bug 257403] Re: Update Flash plugin 10 to the new RC

2008-08-29 Thread wolfchri
I added MOTU Release Team to the subscriber list.

@MOTU Release Team:

Pls make sure that we have the latest flashplugin available. Flashplayer
10RC is miles better than Flashplayer 9 in any aspect, and I did not
discover any bugs during daily usage (on i386).

Pls also read Conns comment why it is a risk to stay at the current
beta2 - Adobe might remove the current beta2 and then flashplugin is
broken.

Please approve a feature freeze excpetion for flashplugin-nonfree.

Thank you, folks.

2008-08-19 Thread wolfchri
Benjamin,

on i386, the package installs and runs just fine. Maybe a missing
dependency in the package for the new NSS or cURL requirement, while
already accidentally installed on my system.

I was so free to subscribe the packager of the flashplugin-package in
PPA to this bug, maybe he has time to check this out ;-)

[Bug 256899] [NEW] Logcheck exits with error due to wrong file permissions for /var/lib/logcheck

2008-08-11 Thread wolfchri
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: logcheck

The Logcheck Ubuntu package does not work out of the box in Ubuntu
8.04.1.

After installation of Logcheck, and Postfix as my mailer on one of my
server, I got this email warning:

Logcheck: machine2 2008-08-10 20:02 exiting due to errors

Warning: If you are seeing this message, your log files may not have been
checked!

Details:
Could not run logtail or save output

Check temporary directory: /tmp/logcheck.e11692

Also verify that the logcheck user can read all files referenced in
/etc/logcheck/logcheck.logfiles!

declare -x HOME=”/var/lib/logcheck”
declare -x LOGNAME=”logcheck”
declare -x MAILTO=”root”

declare -x PWD=”/var/lib/logcheck”
declare -x SHELL=”/bin/sh”

To fix the problem, I had to change the owner and group of
/var/lib/logcheck to user and group logcheck:

sudo chown -R logcheck:logcheck /var/lib/logcheck

It seems to be a re-occurring issue:

[Bug 162984] Re: [needs-packaging] Nimbus GTK theme

2008-07-23 Thread wolfchri
A nice person called wiz has started to provide packages via his/her
PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~wiz/+archive

However, his/her packages also suffer from the problem of not really
being customized for Ubuntu - the Application menu icon in the upper
tool bar shows the Opensolaris Community Icon with the arrow pointing up
cause the icon is used in Opensolaris for the lower tool bar etc.

But nevertheless a first step - Nimbus is by far the most beautiful and
professional theme right after Aqua and fits nicely to the Ubuntu colour
scheme except of the brownish colors (which are dead ugly, IMHO). Thanks
whiz.

[Bug 162984] Re: [needs-packaging] Nimbus GTK theme

2008-07-11 Thread wolfchri
Nimbus is extremely professionally designed, wr to usability and beauty.
Together with some other colour scheme than the ugly brownish style (my
personal opinion and opinion of all people I moved over to Ubuntu so
far, no offense intended) this could be a real competitor against Mac
OSX appearance.

I already did some Nimbus packages ad offered them, but simply packaging
is not enough as some versions had some little rough corners that came
from the OpenSolaris desktop layout.

Please, can we have this for Hardy?

[Bug 216990] Re: error in auth.log when switch user -- pam_smbpass.so

2008-05-09 Thread wolfchri
Hello there,

I get flooded with security warning mails from logcheck since upgrading
my servers to Hardy, caused by this bug.

This is not cosmetic as it makes logcheck useless for me, which is
intended to filter the serious log entries for me. So not only cosmetic
but a security risk as I will possibly not see real serious log entries
even using logcheck if I get a security warning mail every 5 min with
dozens of log lines.

[Bug 205114] Re: B43 driver - severely reduced range

2008-04-29 Thread wolfchri
The bcm43xx-fwcutter package instead the b43-fwcutter will restore the
proprietary firmware for you. bcm43xx-fwcutter is in Universe. No need
to go back to Gutsy:

aptitude purge b43-fwcutter
aptitude install bcm43xx-fwcutter

should give you the Gutsy feeling :-) You can also try a simple
reinstall of b43-fwcutter (purging and installing).

BTW, my problems with the b43 driver are gone - throughput and stability
is the same as with the proprietary Broadcom firmware. Notebook is HP
NX6325.

[Bug 215728] Re: High CPU Consumption

2008-04-23 Thread wolfchri
If Firefox 3.0 b6 does not make it into the final release, I suggest to
roll back to FF 3.0b4 and to skip b5.

I also had to stop using FF b5 on my Hardy systems since it is barely
usable after a few minutes of browsing.

Together with the random scrollkeeper attacks on my HD, CPU and memory
which started to show up again since a few days, this is a rather
unpleasant desktop experience at the last day before release.

I would call this a typical example of Murphy's law. ;-)

Same here on a HP NX6325 notebook with BCM4310 WLAN device.

De facto not working, even if I increase antenna power of my hot spot to

[Bug 208049] Re: Broadcom B43 Wireless Driver will not enable

2008-03-30 Thread wolfchri
I confirm this regression (it worked in 7.10 and Hardy in Alpha6) for
Hardy amd64 on HP Compaq NX6325.

Attached is lspci -v, dmesg looks the same like the others...

I also tried to copy the firmware used in 7.10 (which seems to be the
original Broadcom FW) to /lib/firmware/b43/ucode5.fw but I got something
like a format error. Obviously this ucode5.fw is another firmware (OS?).
It did, however, refuse to work in G-Mode, gives you only 11 MBit /
B-Mode.

Would be really disappointing to lose the out of the box WLAN feature in
Hardy - dont want to got the ndiswrapper way. The NX6325 is a very
popular notebook, would affect quite a few people.

[Bug 208049] Re: Broadcom B43 Wireless Driver will not enable

2008-03-30 Thread wolfchri
Hmm, possibly this problem only affects systems that did the latest
kernel upgrade - jockey seems to think that the installation has been
finished even if the filder /lib/firmware/b43 does not exist.

I finally got jockey to a re-install including download of the firmware
when I blacklisted b43, purged b43-fwcutter, installed bcm43xx-fwcutter
and modprobed bcm43xx, rebooted, blacklisted bcm43xx again and removed
the blacklist entry for b43.

After that, I was able to install the WLAN from jockey, firmware gets
loaded and I can connect via WPA2 to my AP.

Did you guys try a fresh install from the current installation images,
not from beta? I think it will work out of the box from a installation
AFTER the last kernel update.

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2008-03-24 Thread wolfchri
Dan,

does disabling CD drive polling help on your machine?

Do you see any improvement from
sudo hal-disable-polling --device /dev/cdrom ?

(Side effect: does not open Nautilus window for a CD when inserted, turn
it back on by deleting the created file in
/etc/hal/fdi/information/prefrences.fdi )

Make sure that you compare your system while no applications are
running. On my system, the HD kept quiet once the heads were parked;
only disc access lead to new parking and click.

This is, by the way, a hint that powertop gave me. Maybe HAL or a bug in
HAL is waking up the HD s often.

[Bug 205282] Re: Java-Dependency links still to Java6 which is not working on amd64

2008-03-23 Thread wolfchri
This is really an easter egg, folks:

You are right, I did not see bug #203636. And no, there now no reasons
to use java7 instead of openjdk6 as openjdk6 also works on amd64.
However, restricted-extras 12 referred to sun-java6-jre which did not
work in Firefox on amd64. I was unaware of openjdk6, as I have to
confess :-(

However, ubuntu-restricted-extras 14 now fetches icedtea-gcjwebplugin,
which in turn gets the openjdk-6-* stuff you mentioned.

This makes Java working on amd64 on Hardy beta. I just tested it here:

http://www.java.com/de/download/help/testvm.xml

The folks here in the forums will be happy to hear this So pls
apologize the confusion I created but in the end, the result is good.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=580792

Thank you very much! This bug report can be closed as ubuntu-restricted-
extras solves the problem.

[Bug 205282] [NEW] Java-Dependency links still to Java6 which is not working on amd64

2008-03-22 Thread wolfchri
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-restricted-extras

Instead of the GPLed Java7 (Icedtea), ubuntu-restricted-extras still
downloads java6, which is broken on amd64, at least the firefox plugin,
for quite some time now.

This seems to be a low hanging fruit as just the dependency needs to be
changed, in order to also fix this java6 firefox plugin bug

Dependency should be icedtea-java7-plugin, it has dependencies for the
rest.

[Bug 106512] Re: ATA Abnormal status

2008-03-12 Thread wolfchri
Does this problem still occur?

I had the same issue on 7.10, on a HP Evo n600c with a SAMSUNG HM121HC
hard drive but was able to partly solve it by disabling the S=XX
parameter in /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf (commenting it out) and
setting accousting management value to the value hdparm -I recommended.

The HD still locks up sometimes but less frequent and for a much shorter
time. I had the same error messages abnormal status before but now
they are gone, the HD just freezes for maybe 30 sec (before up to 5
min).

[Bug 147250] Re: [Gutsy Alternate CD] Alternate install CD (both x86, AMD64) not booting on HP NX6325

2007-12-28 Thread wolfchri
Hello Leann,

thank you for working on this issue. I just tested the amd64 - Alternate
install CD Hardy Alpha2 two minutes ago, but unfortunately exactly the
same issue - it just stops booting after loading the kernel, screen goes
black, system is still alive (responds to Ctrl-Alt-Del). With my
fb=false workaround, it boots.

The NX6325 comes with a integrated ATI chipset (M200) with an Ati1150
graphics accelerator. Me thinks here is the root for this issue. I will
also google around these days as I have some leisure time.

Let me know if I can help you. Thanks again!

It makes no difference :-(

BTW I registered a blueprint to turn off atime on desktops as this is
completely braindead to have this on by default, as even Linus admits.
It costs up to 15% hard drive performance and has no use on a desktop

[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2007-10-25 Thread wolfchri
@Michael:

Your workaround looks interesting - can you tell us something about the
impact on power consumption? I am currently having the problem that one
of my laptops, the Evo N600c, is grilling and toasting its harddrive
after I set hdparm -B 200. HD Temperature now is constantly at 50
degrees Celsius, lots of fan activity even with no hard drive access.
That leaves me with two impossible options - either I toast my HD or I
break it from the load cycles :-(

So what does smartctl say about your HD temperature?

2007-10-24 Thread wolfchri
WARNING:

Fiddling around with hdparm might stop the unload/load cycles but can
also dramatically increases HD Temp - at least here on my Compaq

- 67387
194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 100 100 000Old_age Always
- 50 (Lifetime Min/Max 16/50)

--we have winter, the laptop is being used as a web server, low load, in a
very cold room (14 degress Celsius!!) The fan is going on constantly to cool
down the HD.
I took the -B 200 value, which works fine for my HP NX6325 - but NOT for this
machine. I have to check if this is connected with laptop-mode - although I am
on cable, it seems to be activated during boot up.

So careful with modifying APM values with hdparm.

I think this bug does not get more importance until Mark Shuttleworth
notebook dies from it :-((

[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2007-10-23 Thread wolfchri
All 3 of my laptops are also affected. The suggested fix with hdparm -B
180 however does not work for all harddrives. On my HITACHI_DK239A-65B
(old Notebook drive in my Thinkpad 600E) for example, it does exactly
the opposite when the laptop was set into laptop mode - it then starts
frequent harddrive access every 10 sec which are otherwise turned off
when in laptop mode. I have to turn OFF S.M.A.R.T with smartctl -s off
/dev/hda and then to start laptop-mode AND in order to stop all
unneccessary HD access.

By the way, this is my reload_cycle number for this 9 yr old harddrive, used as
my webserver:
225 Load_Cycle_Count0x0012 100 100 050Old_age Always
- 1627390049

Lovely :-) What is this numer - billions?

Seriously: I think that marking this severe issue as Wishlist is
inapproprate. Also, not issuing a public warning reminds me to the
behaviour of a software company based in Redmond, USA and is not nice to
to all Ubuntu supporters who trust Canonical and the developers. Ubuntu
is not perfect, but we have nothing to hide, even if a bug like this
could cause bad press.

From the Ubuntu Code of Conduct:

The server install CD is also affected by this bug.

As I supposed, it is obviously a problem with the framebuffer device

Use the boot parameter fb=false (F6 on boot screen of the CD) in order

[Bug 147250] [Gutsy Alternate CD] Alternate install CD (both x86, AMD64) not booting on HP NX6325

2007-09-30 Thread wolfchri
Public bug reported:

The x86 as well as the AMD64 alternate installation CD is stops booting
immediately after the kernel is being loaded (when switching the
screen). So if I remove quiet from the kernel parameters, I see all the
kernel messages, but immediately after that the screen goes black, and
system can only be restarted (Ctrl-Alt-Del works).

I tried several kernel paramters but that did not help.

The problem exists for the Beta CD set as well the following daily
builds. I had no problem with the daily builds before Septembre 24,
2007. Installed systems seem also still to work, also the LiveCD does
boot (well at least until Gnome gets started, but this is another bug).

I guess it might be related to a problem with the initrd and/or the
framebuffer. Media are ok as I testet them on a different system
without this problem.

Funny thing is: When I ask for the CD being tested, that seems to work,
there is some HD/CD-activity. However, the screen also remains black.

[Bug 99810] Re: mozilla-plugin-vlc: symlinks for Firefox are in the wrong place

2007-09-27 Thread wolfchri
The suggested fix works, I confirm this for 7.10 on AMD64.

The bug should be considered high profile as in Germany, the state TV
has expanded its online offerings to Open Source users, using VLC for
non-Windows-Users, responding to respective demands from Linux users.

Ubuntu however is the only OS/Linux distro where people can still NOT
access the online broadcasts and therefore is damaging Ubuntu
reputqation here in Germany badly. In short: This bug really sucks and
needs urgently to be fixed for Gutsy release. Otherwise, we risk Gutsy
being ripped apart in German computer magazine tests in Oktober/November
as it fails this test.

[Bug 82674] Re: Let post-install create and pre-uninstall remove the PDF queue

2007-02-02 Thread wolfchri
I *think* the person who added this to the feature request means that
there should be a printer device / printer queue automatically selected
and installed after having installed cups-pdf and removed when un-
installing the package.

Currently, as far as I know (have not checked feisty yet), you first
have to install cups-pdf and then you need to go to the printer setup
and select the printer-device from the list etc.

In order to have a PDF printing functionality as default, this last step
(selecting and activating the PDF printer device) needs to be scripted.
The perfect solution would be IMHO to check first if there is another
printer device already installed. If no, make PDF printer the default
printer; if yes, just install it but keep the existing printer as the
default printer.

Read here how complicated it is to use the PDF printing functionality
the first time. I think that still fails the grandmother test :-)

[Bug 70718] Re: gnome-obex-send cannot find devices

2007-01-13 Thread wolfchri
In order to work around this problem, you therefore can add the
hciconfig command that Marcel mentioned to /etc/rc.local, between the
comments and the exit command.

See the atached example.

Re: [Bug 68275] Re: Optical Microsoft USB Mouse not recognized in installed Edgy

2006-10-27 Thread wolfchri
Hello Vassilis,

yesterday, it happened again once after rebooting. Absolutely strange,
because I rebooted several times before and after that without problems into
Edgy. So there is still a problem with the Microsoft Optical USB Mouse, but
I can not reproduce it reliably.

My guess is that is is less a kernel module problem but more a problem with
upstart/udev/udev/xorg. It did not occur during the early testing stage of
Edgy.

Since it occurs not often, it is not severe, but I do not like such problems
that can not really reproduced but do exist

Best regards,

Christian

[Bug 57881] grub kernel parameter missing the path to root partition

2006-08-27 Thread wolfchri
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.17-6-686

with the update from kernel-image-2.6.17-5 to -6, the grub config has
obviously changed.

menu.lst now misses the root=/dev/sdaX parameter does is needed at least
on my system (SataI, more details below) to make the kernel know where
he finds the root partition.

Result: grub is booting the kernel, then nothing happens since the
kernel is searching for the root partition.

Since the parameters for the -5 kernel are also replaced with this new
paramters, the system is unbootable (doh).

This is menu.lst before:

title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.17-5-686
root(hd0,7)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-5-686 root=/dev/sda8 ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-5-686
quiet
savedefault
boot

and after the latest update:

title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.17-6-686
root(hd0,7)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-6-686
root=UUID=6943-4775-4afd-837d-a96fea8f ro single
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-6-686
boot

(I changed the UUID numbers a little bit, dunno if they need to be kept
a secret :-)

Here are my system specs:
