[Bug 1850439] Re: No sound on ASUS UX534FT
Hello again. This is a continuation of comment #185 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1850439/comments/185 where we describe hardware, symptoms, then #186 where we describe the permanent fix we did. ## Other problem: "nasal" sound on speakers only We noticed that some applications have normal sound (e.g. youtube in Firefox), while some others have a kind of "nasal" sound (e.g. VLC playing the same audio). I would describe the effect as similar to a very slight clipping producing high frequencies. It is relatively subtle, just as if the laptop speakers had worse quality. The problem is observed only on machine speakers, and not on analog jack output. ## Investigation We reproduced the problem using mpv. Then we tried to disable pulseaudio and have mpv play directly through alsa, which cured the problem but, well, killed all pulseaudio features. Then we instructed pulseaudio to use 48000 output sample rate, which allowed to cure the problem and allow pulseaudio. ## Local fix: force pulseaudio sample rate The fix we used is like this: In /etc/pulse/daemon.conf ensure there is a line like: default-sample-rate = 48000 Then "pulseaudio -k" to ensure no daemon with old settings exist. You might have to run "pulseaudio &" too, depending on context. Anyway, with this change the "nasal sound" problem is fixed permanently in all applications. ## Global fix Thanks a lot to people working upstream if they can provide a non- regressing global fix without users having to figure out workaround. It might be hard and we thank you. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1850439 Title: No sound on ASUS UX534FT To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1850439/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1850439] Re: No sound on ASUS UX534FT
Hello Ian, I'm not a kernel developer but here is the thing: **Each notebook configuration requires its own set of quirks.** Even within one device model manufacturers often change sound chips, components and their interconnections. Please file a **separate** bug to fix your problem. If you have some experience with Qemu - you can try reversing sound chip commands using comment #158 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1850439/comments/158) and comments #125 - #132 as a reference. But do it on your own risk.
I am having what appears to be a related problem with a dual-boot Alienware desktop aurora-r9, running win 10 on one drive and a fresh install of Kubuntu 20.04/Ubuntustudio on a separate internal SSD. Of course, the fact that it's ubuntustudio complicates it somewhat, I imagine, as jack_sink is my output device. Jack and pulseaudio are patched together by default. I tried the four "hda-verb" commands, but they didn't seem to have an effect. uname -a Linux rifferama-awk-R9 5.4.0-42-lowlatency #46-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT Fri Jul 10 01:43:58 UTC 2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux lspci -v 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 8th Gen Core 8-core Desktop Processor Host Bridge/DRAM Registers [Coffee Lake S] (rev 0d) DeviceName: Onboard - Other Subsystem: Dell 8th Gen Core 8-core Desktop Processor Host Bridge/DRAM Registers [Coffee Lake S] Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0 Capabilities: Kernel driver in use: skl_uncore Kernel modules: ie31200_edac 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v5/E3-1500 v5/6th Gen Core Processor PCIe Controller (x16) (rev 0d) (prog-if 00 [Normal decode]) Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 122 Bus: primary=00, secondary=01, subordinate=01, sec-latency=0 I/O behind bridge: e000-efff [size=4K] Memory behind bridge: eb00-ec0f [size=17M] Prefetchable memory behind bridge: a000-b20f [size=289M] Capabilities: Kernel driver in use: pcieport 00:01.1 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v5/E3-1500 v5/6th Gen Core Processor PCIe Controller (x8) (rev 0d) (prog-if 00 [Normal decode]) Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 123 Bus: primary=00, secondary=02, subordinate=02, sec-latency=0 I/O behind bridge: [disabled] Memory behind bridge: [disabled] Prefetchable memory behind bridge: [disabled] Capabilities: Kernel driver in use: pcieport 00:02.0 Display controller: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics 630 (Desktop 9 Series) (rev 02) DeviceName: Onboard - Video Subsystem: Dell UHD Graphics 630 (Desktop 9 Series) Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 142 Memory at 2ffe00 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M] Memory at 2fa000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M] I/O ports at f000 [size=64] Capabilities: Kernel driver in use: i915 Kernel modules: i915 00:08.0 System peripheral: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v5/v6 / E3-1500 v5 / 6th/7th/8th Gen Core Processor Gaussian Mixture Model DeviceName: Onboard - Other Subsystem: Dell Xeon E3-1200 v5/v6 / E3-1500 v5 / 6th/7th/8th Gen Core Processor Gaussian Mixture Model Flags: fast devsel, IRQ 255 Memory at 2fff027000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [disabled] [size=4K] Capabilities: 00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 200 Series/Z370 Chipset Family USB 3.0 xHCI Controller (prog-if 30 [XHCI]) DeviceName: Onboard - Other Subsystem: Dell 200 Series/Z370 Chipset Family USB 3.0 xHCI Controller Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 129 Memory at 2fff01 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K] Capabilities: Kernel driver in use: xhci_hcd 00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 200 Series PCH CSME HECI #1 DeviceName: Onboard - Other Subsystem: Dell 200 Series PCH CSME HECI Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 151 Memory at 2fff026000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K] Capabilities: Kernel driver in use: mei_me Kernel modules: mei_me 00:17.0 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 200 Series PCH SATA controller [AHCI mode] (prog-if 01 [AHCI 1.0]) DeviceName: Onboard - SATA Subsystem: Dell 200 Series PCH SATA controller [AHCI mode] Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 140 Memory at ea104000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=8K] Memory at ea107000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256] I/O ports at f090 [size=8] I/O ports at f080 [size=4] I/O ports at f060 [size=32] Memory at ea106000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=2K] Capabilities: Kernel driver in use: ahci Kernel modules: ahci 00:1b.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 200 Series PCH PCI Express Root Port #17 (rev f0) (prog-if 00 [Normal decode]) Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 124 Bus: primary=00, secondary=03, subordinate=03, sec-latency=0 I/O behind bridge: [disabled] Memory behind bridge: ec60-ec6f [size=1M] Prefetchable memory behind bridge: [disabled] Capabilities: Kernel driver in use: pcieport 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 200 Series PCH PCI Express Root Port #2 (rev f0) (prog-if 00 [Normal d

Else I can figure out some and share, > e.g. from > https://askubuntu.com/questions/919054/how-do-i-run-a-single-command-at-startup-using-systemd Hi all, This fix works on our machine, where lshw says "ZenBook UX534FAC_UX533FAC" or simply "UX534FAC". What we did is start from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ASUS_Zenbook_UX534 and adjust for our machine: Create `/etc/systemd/system/audio-fix.service` with this content: [Unit] Description=Fix internal audio on ASUS Zenbook UX533/534 # The following options are needed to prevent the service from executing before the sound card is activated and thus failing Requires=sys-devices-pci:00-:00:1f.3-sound-card0.device # replace with the result of the previous command After=sys-devices-pci:00-:00:1f.3-sound-card0.device # same [Service] Type=oneshot ExecStart=hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x500 0xf ; hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x400 0x7774 ; hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x500 0x45 ; hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x400 0x5289 [Install] # Make it part of the sound initialization routine WantedBy=sound.target Then issue this commands: systemctl start audio-fix systemctl enable audio-fix You can now reboot to check if the fix works. On our machine, sound works on speakers and audio jack output, sound is good and we could not find any trace of the bug. Thanks in advance to all kernel hackers that can propagate towards upstream a proper fix (without regression for other users). :-) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1850439 Title: No sound on ASUS UX534FT To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1850439/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1850439] Re: No sound on ASUS UX534FT
@Taha Soomro (suryaya) - I assume you have UX533FTC laptop (and not UX534* laptop). 1. Disable all commands that are performed on boot. 2. Reboot laptop - sound is not working 3. Apply only these manually: hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x500 0xf hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x477 0x74 4. Listen to some audio and realize if sound sounds OK or if some frequencies are distorted. 5. Reboot 6. Apply only these manually: hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x500 0x1b hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x477 0x4a4b hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x500 0xf hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x20 0x477 0x74 7. Listen to some audio and realize if sound is any different when compared to 2 commands only. My point is - on UX533FTC you don't need 4 commands. 2 are enough, because to me audio sounds exactly identical. The remaining issue is microphone on this particular model. @Sergey - I already tried attaching IOMMU group, but without success. I got error code 10 (or 11 - don't remember) in Windows for unknown reason when enabling/using the audio device. I used VM in legacy mode. The overall process is pretty complex to get it working correctly, and I don't have any experience with in the first place. [Bug 1850439] Re: No sound on ASUS UX534FT
(this a reply to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1850439/comments/153) Eugene, Looks like your device has a different audio hardware (??!!) and even a separate bass speaker. If, of course, it's not just ALSA behaving different on Arch and Ubuntu with different kernel versions. Here is my alsa-info output for comparison: http://alsa- project.org/db/?f=de23539e56920af428008882c75fdb912728f30e. There is no bass speaker on my machine. And also you have other hda connections, driver pin configs and some other stuff. Basically you need to: 1) install Windows 10 in the Qemu virtual machine: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/QEMU/Windows_guest 2) list you IOMMU groups, add all devices from IOMMU group to the vfio driver: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PCI_passthrough_via_OVMF#Enabling_IOMMU Here is the example for my machine and my devices, replace the corresponding string in /etc/default/grub with your devices: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text vfio- pci.ids=8086:02a3,8086:02c8,8086:0284,8086:7270 iommu=pt intel_iommu=on" 4) upgrade-grub 5) reboot 6) start windows virtual machine with the audio card forwarded, example: https://gist.github.com/s-kostyuk/b8940413cc4334092a6fcc58661e0278 7) install the Realtek driver from here: https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/ASUS-ZenBook-15-UX534FTC/HelpDesk_Download/ IMPORTANT: Search for appropriate drivers for YOUR notebook if it's not UX534FTC. 8) in device manager - manually change the driver for your audio device to the "Realtek High Definition Audio Version 6.0.8794.1" (or similar) 9) ensure that everything is working in windows (mic, speakers, headphones, etc) 10) disable the device in device manager 11) stop windows VM 12) attach Ubuntu 20.04 Live CD (or other) with the audio still forwarded 13) ensure that the sound is working in VM 14) enable dump_coef, run alsa-info.sh and try to find the differences with vanilla state -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1850439 Title: No sound on ASUS UX534FT To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1850439/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1850439] Re: No sound on ASUS UX534FT
Thank you so much Sergey, Erikas and everyone involved in this thread! Thanks to your efforts I confirm that the four hda-verb commands work flawlessly to restore internal sound on UX534FA-A8093T (internally recognized as UX534FAC) with Intel Core i5-10210U on Solus OS. I just had to install alsa-tools and enter the four aforementioned commands. What works: - internal speakers (with good sound quality) - headphones: both plugging in and unplugging while sound is working work as expected with sound being shifted to one or the other output flawlessly - internal mic also seems to work (if I believe the sound meter in Sound settings) but it was already working before too I believe. Do you think it's time to send an email to the kernel mailing list to try to get this fixed upstream? Before this fix I had tried without success another suggestion of patching kernel source file /sound/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c, so as to enable a preexisting quirk for our models. I got the idea from https://forum.manjaro.org/t/alc294 -analog-audio-card-detected-but-no-sound-internaly-or-headphones/54089, it didn't work but surely as this is quite a common thing with Asus laptops, somebody up there in kernel land will be able to merge the proper fix? If someone is already used to posting to LKML then please go ahead, otherwise I'll try to set up my email client so as not to trip off Majordomo ;-) Thanks a lot again for the debugging work @Sergey & Erikas. ** Patch added: "Non-working patch adding a quirk for ASUS UX534FA in HDA Realtek kernel file" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1850439/+attachment/5379830/+files/asus-realtek.patch -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1850439 Title: No sound on ASUS UX534FT To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1850439/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

For me (Asus UX533FTC) sound works fine when I execute those 2 commands after boot. However, when I was testing all those commands, sound did not always worked. Change "Built in audio" from "Off" to "Analog Stereo Duplex". 4. Sound starts to work (if required commands were already executed). [Bug 1850439] Re: No sound on ASUS UX534FT
Also affected by this bug, Zenbook 15 UX534FAC_UX534FA on a freshly installed Ubuntu 20.04 in dual boot with Windows 10: no sound on internal speakers in Ubuntu but USB audio speakers work. Same sound card as others etc. I know it is a bit far fetched, but would it be possible that the required switch of SATA mode in the BIOS between Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) (required for booting Windows) and AHCI mode (required to have any Linux distribution detect the NVMe drive) have something to do with this? Last year I helped someone set up Ubuntu on a Zenbook UX333FA, and when faced with the same situation (no sound/crackling in Ubuntu only), we used the workaround of shutting down Windows completely instead of rebooting, then coming from a cold boot the sound was working with the appropriate kernel (4.19 IIRC).
