I have now tested the latest upstream kernel (see comment #6) and also
the patched kernel from Luis (comment #12). So far I could not reproduce
the error. However, as mentioned earlier and as FlamM (comment
I just installed your fixed kernel (i386).
However I will have difficulties to confirm that it fixes the issue since it is
quite random (I didn't identify a reproducible scenario).
But if in 10 or 20 days this bug doesn't show up again, then it will be a good
indication that it indeed fixes it.

Thank you for testing. If the kernel doesn't fix the issue, please
report back. The fix is already queued for a future kernel release.
For the moment, I'll tag this bug as a duplicate of bug #1052933.

I suspect this is a duplicate of bug #1052933. I've built a test kernel
that contains a fix for that bug and I would like you to test to make
sure it also fixes your problem. You can download it here:
http://people.canonical.com/~henrix/lp1052933/v1/amd64/
Note that this is the amd64 kernel.
Ok, I've just uploaded the i386 test kernel build here:
http://people.canonical.com/~henrix/lp1052933/v1/i386/
Please let me know if this kernel solves the problem (or, for people
running 64bits systems, the kernel linked in previous comment) so that
we can tag this bug as duplicate of bug
I had the same bug than the one described by Dom, I have tried your fix (i386
test kernel).
It solve the problem : same image always cause the crash with kernel 3.2.0-30
or 3.2.0-31, does not cause crash anymore with test kernel.

Hey, thanks for your feedback.
@Joseph(comment #6): I have not yet had the chance to test the latest
upstream kernel.
@Joseph(comment #7): This issue started happening only very recently - a
few days ago. My kern.log mentions this error message already on Sep 14
14:29:45 with the same kernel as

I have the very same bug, same Ubuntu Version, same kernel version, almost same
hardware (Thinkpad T60 - 2007 49G).
For me, however this causes the system to crash right after the desktop is
shown, maybe because of a jpg wallpaper.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.6 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both
the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.
Once you've tested the
Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
kernel version where you were not having this particular problem? This
will help determine if the problem you are seeing is the result of the
introduction of a regression, and when this regression was introduced.

For me, this bug occurs (always) after bootup since updating to kernel 3.2.0-30.
However, it occured before when using eog, but only seldom, when viewing large
pictures.
Thats why I cannot exactly say with which kernel version it occured for the
first time.
It never occured with 10.04 though.
Ok, I've done some further testing:
I have to correct myself on the eog crash. In this case not the whole system
crashes, but only the gnome session (user will get back to login screen). Only
error message I can find is this one:
gnome-session[2219]: Gdk-WARNING: gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11
Changed to confirmed, as I think all the relevant information is there.
Please let me know if this is not correct.
