Audio playback in Audacity fails 95% of the time with the message: Error while opening the sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate. when it does work, it isn't because of anything I have done (ie. kill artsd) The only way to get audacity to work 100% of the time is to disable the KDE sound system. From what I understand, KDE should release the default sound interface 60 seconds after the last system sound, and audacity should only capture the sound interface during recording or playback. I have just reinstalled Feisty (failed to upgrade!); but using the old /home/ directory / configuration. Unfortunately, I still have to disable the KDE sound system before using audacity: System Settings - (General) Sound Systems - Enable the System (disabled) The message is: Error while opening the sound device. I just checked and audacity 1.2.6 in Feisty works just fine with the KDE sound in KDE 3.5.6, so this is either a local problem you are having or an issue that's been fixed for the next release.
