Same here! In addition, I get the same error when starting X via startx,
not using gdm or any other login manager! I'm using ion as window

I forgot to mention that my xserver crashes mostly when I'm browsing

work-in-progress because of it.
My setup is Ubuntu 8.04 with Compiz. I always have Firefox running (3.0.3 right
now). The two cents I can add at the moment are that twice I have experienced
this problem when I clicked on
I forgot to mention that I do not have gnash installed.

ok, thank you for your suggestion, Bryce !
I've opened bug 224798 and attached all necessary files.

jwinget, can you follow the directions on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingXorg to get a full backtrace on this
issue?
(I suspect your issue might be unrelated to the original bug, but if you
can get a full backtrace, I could investigate it.)

I believe I have the same (or a related) bug, although I don't have gnash
installed.
Running Hardy Heron, with the latest updates.
Seems to happen when there are a lot of things happening on the display, for
