Well, I've wondered if it was the nVidia driver, but shouldn't the problem persist after turning off compiz? The nvidia-glx-new driver works perfectly as long as compiz is turned off, and I also had the same problems on Feisty; bug 145112 says that the driver problem didn't exist in Feisty. --

This happens for me under Gutsy when I unlock the computer after suspend to ram. The gnome-screensaver dialog shows up and I can unlock it okay but after that the screen is just black and only the mouse works. Caps lock, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, and SysRq don't work. This is on an X40 with an 855GM
