I had this problem with Gutsy and still have it with Hardy. My graphics
card in an nVida GeForce Go 7400. On the advice of the nVidia forums, I
edited my modprobe options file to set the graphics card at maximum
frequency (i.e. disable throttling). This has reduced locks up from
every couple of
i can confirm this issue on two laptops
one is intl gma965 and the other one an intel X3100

the screen freezes and i can only move my cursor.
the only keys working are the sysrq keys
plz tell me what i should test to
Yes, I can reproduce this, and I am running Hardy (latests updates as of
April 9th), and I have an Intel 945GM video chipset on an Acer Aspire
5630.
To define what this is:
If and only if I am running compiz, and leave the machine on over night,
then use it the next morning, in the first few
Can anyone not using nvidia reproduce this with hardy?

are started by setting Visual Effects to 'Normal'? Thanks.

I'm having the same problem with Visual Effects on 'Normal' in
Appearance settings after waking up from a suspend to RAM. Video card
description from lspci is as follows: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller:
Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller
(rev 03). And
I have a Dell XPS M1210 laptop with an nVidia Geforce Go 7400 GPU
running the restricted drivers on Gutsy.
I have been running Gutsy for a couple months now, and have been
experiencing freezes about every 2 hour during heavy usage. After
significant experimentation with different applications
With the latest upgrade of Compiz all my problems are resolved (Ubuntu
gutsy, Airis 930n with Intel 915G)

Well, I've wondered if it was the nVidia driver, but shouldn't the
problem persist after turning off compiz? The nvidia-glx-new driver
works perfectly as long as compiz is turned off, and I also had the same
problems on Feisty; bug 145112 says that the driver problem didn't exist
in Feisty.
--
I also have a freezing problem with compiz. The only difference for me
is that it usually (but not always) recovers in about 15 seconds. I
don't have any problems if I turn off compiz by running metacity
--replace.
Here's my hardware:
HP Pavilion dv9428nr laptop
nVidia 6150 graphics
AMD X2 TL-64
I have an Airis 930n with intel 915GM and a clean installation of Gutsy
and only when I have Compiz enabled I have displays freezes every 5
minutes whatever I were doing, the only thing responding is the mouse
cursor.

system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion
I used to have the freeze when gnome-screensaver was running (not only
after suspend). I thought it was a problem with gnome-screensaver or
xserver-xorg-video-intel (reported as Bug #160309). This morning I
updated compiz, and now the system freezes each time it is idle for a
few minutes
I have the same problem, except the mouse freezes as well ... and I'm
sure it is not X as audio files, videos, etc continue to play on a
freeze, similar to bug #138094.
I'm using a fresh install of Gutsy on a Thinkpad T40 using the open
source at driver on a Radeon 7500 Mobility.

Ok
I had 3 freeze in a row for less than 10 mins
In the first one , every programs I had to run were open (amarok , gaim , skype
, firefox , wingide , zend studio , acrobat reader )
The second and 3rd , only the gaim with compiz
I observed in some incoming messages from gaim , I have the freeze
ok,it has occured several times, but when I turn off the expo effect, it
doesn't occur (supposedly at all). Still,compiz crashes(only compiz, I
can still reload it etc.) when I close a window using rightclick on a
window's icon in awn.

system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion
Ok
I've reached to a safe zone now
I must say kernel noapic nolapic acpi=off apm=power_off pci=assign-busses
didn't help
I have a fresh installed gutsy , and I managed to download these
packages from feisty release :
x11-common_7.2-0ubuntu11_i386.deb
xorg-dev_7.2-0ubuntu11_all.deb
I can confirm this issue with the following hardware:
Gutsy 64 bit
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200
Asus M2N-E
2 Gigs DDR
nVidia GeForce 7300 SE
I tried several different version of the nvidia drivers but still had
lockups. When this happens CPU usage hits 100%, sometimes the mouse
cursor can be moved,
Okay, forget what I said. Xorg froze up again. I was able to use the
system all day without a problem. When it finally froze up again I had
just clicked a link in Firefox. The page didn't start to load, X froze,
mouse cursor still moved.
Through a serial console I was able to see Xorg running
The nvidia issue is separate; you're seeing bug #145112

Ok
I went to sleep , and came back , omg , everything in stable mood!
just one thing:
Everytime the freeze occurred a sound like what I set to incoming message for
gaim is heard , right the time the freeze.
so the only thing I haven't run was gaim
now for next 24 hours I will test that
Including
I forgot
the kernel is : 2.6.22-14-386

I have this issue as well. Acer Aspire 5570z -- I ran beryl in feisty
perfectly fine, but since upgrading I have this issue several times per
day, with nothing to speak of in the logs. I can ssh in from another
machine and kill off X, gdm, compiz, etc. but I cannot get the actual
display to
well' it happens for me during normal runtime,no suspending, etc.
There were few times, when even the cursor wouldn't move.. and the Fn+F7 or
Fn+Arrowup work.

This happens for me under Gutsy when I unlock the computer after suspend
to ram. The gnome-screensaver dialog shows up and I can unlock it okay
but after that the screen is just black and only the mouse works. Caps
lock, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, and SysRq don't work. This is on an X40 with
an 855GM
