Fast path to recovery was power down, popping out the nvidia card and installing an ancient AMD card which automatically restored nouveau allowing purge of broken packages using synaptic pkg manager . The system boots without issue and I enter credentials to login. After clicking the button to login (or hitting Enter), the system immediately suspends. Hitting any key on the keyboard resumes, to a blank (black) screen. The system then hangs entirely unresponsive.
