[Bug 1721903] Re: nvidia-384 driver causes immediate suspension upon login & subsequent system hang with blank screen

2018-06-04 Thread Erv Bendiks
GeForce GTX 750 Ti

apt log:
Start-Date: 2018-06-04 09:07:16
Commandline: aptdaemon role='role-commit-packages' sender=':1.85'
Install: libcuda1-384:amd64 (384.130-0ubuntu0.16.04.1, automatic),
nvidia-opencl-icd-384:amd64 (384.130-0ubuntu0.16.04.1, automatic),
nvidia-384:amd64 (384.130-0ubuntu0.16.04.1)
Error: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
End-Date: 2018-06-04 09:07:24

During install observed lz error during unpacking files.

bug manifests as fail during logon which flips back to the signon
screen.

Fast path to recovery was power down, popping out the nvidia card and
installing an ancient AMD card which automatically restored nouveau
allowing purge of broken packages using synaptic pkg manager .

Reverting back to the nvidia-340 pack restored function after
repopulating the nvidia card.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1721903/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1721903] Re: nvidia-384 driver causes immediate suspension upon login & subsequent system hang with blank screen

2017-10-06 Thread Dan Bright
Removing the above nvidia package immediately resolves the issue and I
am able to login to a graphic session as normal.

** Description changed:

- Description: Ubuntu Artful Aardvark (development branch)
- Release: 17.10
+ OS: Ubuntu Artful Aardvark (development branch), Release: 17.10
+
  Package: nvidia-384

- Expected: To be able to login
+ Laptop model: Lenovo Z50

- Actual:
+ Graphics: Gforce 840M
+
+ Expected behaviour: To be able to login.
+
+ Actual behaviour:

After installing the Nvidia 384.90 driver from the nvidia-384 package
and rebooting, I am unable to login to a graphical session.

The system boots without issue and I enter credentials to login. After
clicking the button to login (or hitting Enter), the system immediately
  suspends.

Hitting any key on the keyboard resumes, to a blank (black) screen. The
system then hangs entirely unresponsive. I am unable even to drop to
  terminal.
