This is a known problem. It is possible to configure dual head with xrandr (http://intellinuxgraphics.org/dualhead.html) but atm not with the GUI tools. Since clone mode works out of the box I guess this bug report is the wrong place for this wishlist bug. Please search or open a new bug

Ok, I just upgraded to xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.2.1-1ubuntu4 and linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic 2.6.24-12.22, and rebooted my computer and now it works ! The output on gnome-display-properties is exactely the same except timestamps. Using the fn key and clone mode, the external monitor

Btw. please use the tool System - Preferences - Screen resolution for testing. Xrandr shows both displays in your log so it should work. Just plug both monitors before start and they should be enabled in clone mode. If you want to extend your desktop you will find more information under
