Sound broke in my pc when I upgraded from kernel 2.6.24-11 to 2.6.24-12.
And the problem exists in both -generic and -i386. I have an onboard
soundcard (It's a nforce2 motherboard and it uses the ac97 sound
module). I have seen that I can't load now the module soundcore, it
existed in 2.6.24-11

I'm a little worried that months have gone by and this still isn't
fixed, or even seeing any recent activity. Sound is STILL not working
properly on a system that should be among the easiest to support. (Dell

At least the problem is no longer rooted in the kernel, since
Apparently there was a bug where the linux sound system would put the
card in a very BAD state... I could not get my sound back even by
reinstalling.
The fix, believe it or not, was to boot into Windows which reset the
sound card on boot -- then sound worked fine.

I'm not sure, but I'm using a Dell Vostro 1400 with no customization,
and was using 5stack as described in Bug #197394. Sound worked for me
with 5stack in Gutsy. I don't know if it's just coincidence, but it may
be useful information after all.

Got the same problem, my system is a Dell Vostro 1400 with a HDA Intel
Sound card and the 2.6.24-11-386 kernel.
The problem fixes by imputing alsa reload after killing all the
programs that are using sound.

I talked to the contributor that has committed the next release,
1.0.16r2 , to the upstream.
He said that he is aware of the issue and that the new release package
should fix this problem. The new package has been built and is
currently being pushed to the repository mirrors.

When I was running 2.4.24-4 fresh from the Alpha4 install CD things were
working fine. After the update things worked until I restarted (2nd
time) after installing 2.4.24-8.
I've tried installing PulseAudio... no good...
Confirmed. I've now lost sound on all kernels, including 2.6.24-3.
Seems there are now multiple severe bugs.

Ok, I upgraded alsa with yesterday's update release and sound is gone
again. While the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base is unchanged, I'll try
rebuilding the alsa-modules next.

module assistant and then I added the line options snd-hda-intel

Note that this problem seems to be in the kernel, not alsa-driver,
unless that package is somehow included in the kernel. Sound still
works fine in 2.6.24-3. Setting back to confirmed, unless someone can
explain why this issue is not fixed by a standard apt-get upgrade. I

I'm not sure what Daniel meant and i'm not sure which package actually
has the driver for hda-intel. Is that provided by alsa-source because I
was under the impression that was just for building it yourself but I
was able to get it working finally but just compiling the new 1.0.16
drivers from

Bugs,
I found a work-around... While playing a video (I used a Youtube Clip),
suspend the computer. Once fully suspended, wake the computer and Vola!
Sound! Sucks, but it works for me.
By the way, any idea when a fix is coming to Hard? Thanks!

it just requires a sync.
Sadly enough, the -5 revision didn't include it. Now the the 2.6.24
kernel is officially out, I hope we'll soon have a stable package and be

Yes it is. I checked the changelog, the faulty patch is still listed in
the upstream changes. It should have been reverted.
And now I don't have the -3 kernel anymore, I can't listen to music. :-(
