The patch was also applied in the 4.0 branch, so the fix should be in

I've had the same problem and I have to use a fix like Yuriy's to get
back a usable system. The first two times, it got so much memory that
there was no swap available and I had to do a hard reset because the
system was so unresponsive. Another time, I was away with the KDE4
session still running
This doesn't happen with desktop effects turned off. I'm using the
nvidia driver.

Using the intel driver... I suppose I can turn off desktop effects...

I don't know if this is the same bug, but I've had kwin leaking memory since
the upgrade to KDE 4.0.4. It makes they system unusable after a few hours
until I can restart kwin:
kwin --replace if I can get to a konsole, or
killall kwin
DISPLAY=:0 kwin
if I can only get to a TTY. This will start
