Thank you for your bug report, using firefox is not a bug but a choice
though, it allow to have the correct applications to be listed in the
preferred capplet where your change would make a custom command being
displayed there rather than showing what webbrowser is actually set,
closing the bug
Huh? This is a bug, and you are forcing your choice of firefox on
everyone.
If firefox isn't installed, then this shows the incorrect application,
breaks gnome support for http urls and requires the user to dig through
to find this setting and fix it.
It'd be better to use gnome-www-browser
gnome-www-browser is a debian specific hack and as described before it's
not ideal, uninstalling firefox should fallback correctly to an another
browser right, there is bug #217296 already open about that though

ffm: No, gnome-www-browser uses the debian alternatives system. It has
nothing to do with gnome.
seb128: There's nothing wrong with using deb specific solutions, you're derived
from Debian.
What's not ideal is that it's system rather than user specific, and not
integrated with gnome.
This bug
You're assuming that everyone is using ubuntu-desktop. That's not a good
assumption, and not one that gnome-vfs can make.

I'm not making any assumption, the GNOME defaults in ubuntu are
optimized for the ubuntu desktop, that's not ideal but that's better
than having broken defaults on ubuntu. Nobody denies there is a bug
there, but the issue is not the default selection, it's that the current
mechanism has no
The correct way to handle this then is to have the safe default in
gnome-vfs and override in ubuntu-artwork (or something).
This would keep things working for Ubuntu, while removing one item from
the list of things derivatives need to debug and change.

To get your fix included in Ubuntu, it would help if you tried
transforming it into a debdiff
(http://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide/Recipes/Debdiff) and submit it
for review (http://wiki.ubuntu.com/SponsorshipProcess). If you prefer
somebody else to do that, that's fine - please just indicate if
The fix is
sed -i 's/firefox/gnome-www-browser/'
./debian/libgnomevfs2-common.gconf-defaults
I don't really have the time right now to mess around with debdiffs.

This package is installed by ubuntu-desktop and provides the default
application for a gnome web browser, so it doesn't look too demphasized
to me.
