Hi, tried the same and found the following:
After opening the document there is no document-language set (-none- is
displayed in the indicator field at the bottom, right). You have to select the
complete text and select English instead of (non-proofing) from the
language list in the Tools -
Well, this appears to be related to the specific document. Using another
document which I created previoulsy, spell checking worked as expected.
Using /usr/share/abiword-2.6/readme.abw spell checking fails to check
the document. This can be reproduced using the document in

working properly for me.
