It just happened again, but this time I tried Dmitry V Shurupov's workaround. It didn't work (I'm not using a PS/2 mouse), but what did work was removing and re-inserting the driver for my wireless keyboard/mouse (hid_logitech). I only had to do it once and sure enough everything was back to
