I am booting ubuntu from an external HD. Not having the software listed
in the software center available for instalation is time consuming and
frustrating for newcomers as me that are testing for business use. If we
expect more users to switch to opensource, it needs to be layer 8
ready.

John, are you testing Lucid or Karmic? I haven't had much issues with
package lists for the Lucid beta, and most of the stability bugs for the
software center seems to be ironed out. We would greatly appreciate
your opinion on the state of the Software Center in Lucid.

After Ubuntu
This bug also affected myself too. A new Ubuntu user installed Ubuntu
remix on an new asus eee pc and couldn't install any programs in the
software center and they brought it to me to fix.
Luckly you can to to synaptic package manager, refresh, then they show
up but a new user (and myself at

I added a karmic task, but I'm not sure this actually is needed. When
the update arrives the first refresh of the package list has happend and
the bug has disappeared.

Could you please tell if that was a networkless install? Or was a
network available/enabled during the install? Please also note that the
problem heals itself after maximum of 24h when the automatic nighly
update runs.

@WeatherGod Yes, it should - its a anacron task, it will be run at other
times if the machine is off in the night.
